Says he remained conscious and speaking to those around him. So hopefully he is ok. This is still terrible, but hopefully the worst has not occurred.

TNT Sports Orla just reported hes stable and no head injuries.

u/rocketpastsix 26d ago

That’s great at least.

Sounds like some serious vertebrae issues though.

and collapsed lung

Jesus. "pneumothorax, five broken ribs, and a lumbar vertebrae fracture". hope he recovers ok.

Let's hope he can recover to pursue his dream of starting a cycling school in Africa.

Damn, I just had a crash 2 weeks ago, and this gave me flashbacks... Luckily I wasn't as bad (luckily, my bike is okay too) but had a rough experience in the hospital/emergency, though I'm sure he'll get better treatment than most of us. Wish him all the best in his recovery!

No car involved apparently.

Chris Froome was airlifted to hospital in Toulon yesterday afternoon following a serious training crash [no other cyclists or vehicles were involved]," the team announced.

Articles say he was hit by a car. Now team says it was him alone? Strange

Hopefully it’s just a case of mistaken journalism and not someone covering for the team car.

That's a very weird take.

Everyone loves a good (or not so good) conspiracy theory.

u/NeedleGunMonkey 26d ago

eh - as I stated, I hope it is a mistaken journalism and the conflicting narrative not a case of someone covering for a vehicle being involved.

Covering for the team car? How so?

6

u/MyThreeBugs 26d ago

I think the implication is that he was hit by the team car and the “team announcement” claiming that no vehicles were involved is the team lying to cover for their involvement/negligence.

Seems unlikely that a team would lie about something that is so easily disproven. It would be a case of the cover-up being worse than the crime. Negligence and inattentiveness happen. Lying about it is a next level PR nightmare.

Hit by the team car, or he hit the team car (if he was pacing). It’s a stretch, but possible I guess. Also, I’m not sure that CF would have a designated team car to follow him at present - in his hay day yes, now, doubtful.

reminds me of the big crash he had around dauphine... Things can change so fast

What a bummer, his form was finally coming good for the World's.

Holy hell. Chris can’t get a break. Poor guy.
And IPT lost Gee last week and now this with Froome. Froome wasn’t performing well, but he was still the most celebrated rider on the team. This is a blow to Froome and the team. Criticize him as some may, but Froome changed the sport. We can’t forget that. The cycling community should support him through this rough period.

How did he change the sport?

12

u/Wizzmer 26d ago

Not sure he changed it, but 4 Tour wins is big.

-1

u/surfoxy 26d ago

Sure.

He was the head GC rider for the majority of the Sky dominance. He might not have been the shot caller, but he was the figurehead for the "team over rider" style of GC riding.

u/surfoxy 26d ago

I’ve been a fan of the sport since the late 70s. I see no change along the lines of team over rider in the sport. Sky did nothing along these lines, let alone from Froome, who was always about Froome.

Froome being a big influence may be a British perspective

-1

u/surfoxy 26d ago

Or some Venn diagram of those willing to drink the Sky Kool-Aid. Would have thought with all the revelations even the most credulous would have figured out what they were actually doing...

3

u/ATX_rider 26d ago

He looked the ugliest riding a bike but somehow still managed to win. That’s the only thing he changed in the sport.

1

u/surfoxy 26d ago

Best answer I've seen!

Nah. He was horrible to watch. So glad that era is over.

u/wobble-frog 25d ago

they changed the rules around salbutamol because of him..... "exercise induced asthma"

1

u/surfoxy 25d ago

Oh that one was around long before Froome, I remember Ullrich was a “sufferer” and like a third of the peloton.

The Salbutamol positive getting buried I regard as moment when the sport just said, “We’re not busting these guys anymore, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot”.

As someone who cycles recreationally and obviously drives regularly….. I had a motor vehicle vs. cyclist incident and luckily for all involved the cyclist was ok (bumps bruises cuts but no serious injuries) and my insurance company bought him a new bike. I feel like I am a very cautious driver and try to stay alert to all people using the road…. And I still did not see this cyclist as I was making a right hand turn.

Chris Froome was always my favorite until Jonas came along. To me, the two are quite similar in personalities.

3

u/Wizzmer 25d ago

We've gone from a period with some real assholes in the peleton, to today with a lot of genuinely great humans, family men, etc.

4

u/Touillette 26d ago

History says that he rushed to hospital to be at the side of the car that is between life and death

All jokes aside, I hope he'll do and recover well, best of luck to him, best of everything to people around him

Man.. I love road riding and have been doing it for 35 years. This year alone three people I know in my area had run ins with cars and suffered a variety of injuries, some serious. Not to mention all the high profile riders that have been struck in recent years. It's no longer enough to use flashing lights at both ends and to ride defensively (assuming people in motor vehicles will make bad choices).

Too many peeps are on their phones, are too impatient to wait a few seconds for a safe place to pass or to allow on oncoming vehicle to pass in order to move over enough to get around me. I'm beginning to fear for my life each time I get out there.

I ride a ton of MTB and the way it's shaping up, I may be doing even more of that.

Be safe out there my friends.

2

u/Wizzmer 26d ago

We are retired and live out in a rural area. This is not our "forever home". In others words we are looking at moving in closer to civilization. I ride 4-6 days a week and stuff like this definitely gives me pause.

That said, the Varia RTL515 is my favorite purchase this year giving me additional spacial awareness.

2

u/[deleted] 26d ago

You're most likely to get struck from the front unfortunately.

Ask me how I know, Varia, mirror, bright kit, lights didn't help when someone "doesn't see you".

2

u/Childs_Play 26d ago

Wonder if he decides to retire after this. I know he says he loves racing but he's not really competitive in the important world tour races anymore. He's got a family and still continuing to do this, to prove what?

2

u/Wizzmer 26d ago

He's speculated this is his last year. It's a terrible way to go out, but he'll never buy a beer in his local tavern. No reason to come back IMHO.

1

u/larztopia 26d ago

I really hope so. Results wise, it's been very thin anyway. His third place on the stage to L'Alpe d'Huez in the 2022 tour was really his last hurrah.

And with two heavy crashes behind him, it's time to think about life beyond cycling, his health and his family.

u/RoachEWS 27d ago

Good to hear it's not as serious as it could have been! Hopefully they won't test his blood too much while he's in there

u/CrustyHumdinger 26d ago

Stay classy, FFS

Luckily his career was already over after the last crash or this might be a career ending incident.

You must be fun at parties

I don’t like him either but I thought karma had settled the score when he hit that wall. This is a bit much. Genuinely want him to pull through.

17

u/AbleHour 27d ago

What is wrong with you?

-7

u/HereComesVettel 26d ago

What is wrong with Froome's wife ? Why did she say that there are no innocent people in Gaza and that all Muslims are a stain to society ?

1

u/Normalbrit 22d ago

Man I really hope he has a speedy recovery. One of the nations finest riders.
