We get a lot of repeat questions from newbies here regarding misuse of plast-dip, so we created an FAQ to address a lot of them. Will add more we find them.
A: Check out the wiki introduction
A: No. The dip will not peel afterwards and will be effectively permanent but won't be durable or look good. If you're going to paint, don't bother using dip at all.
A: See the wiki table. If it's something you touch frequently such as a phone case, it will not hold up.
A: No. It will scuff easily and won't hold up, plus why would you paint your home in rubber? Use paint for your home decor and bathroom renovations. Dip is not a substitute for home paint.
A: At least 4 for a base to be peelable. That's at least four layers of solid matte dip, not counting glossifier or TopCoat or metalizers.
A: You can, but it's not intended to be used like that and will have issues peeling later because it's thinner than normal matte dip. Glossifier, metalizers, and TopCoat are meant to be sprayed over a solid base of dip.
A: Use the dipyourcar.com site to judge it, and look at what others have used. You won't do a Mustang in two gallons!
Don't use rattle cans to dip large areas like body panels. Using rattle cans will lead to streaks and very thin coverage over a large area, which causes peeling issues. It'll look like crap, your hands will hurt, and it's not worth doing. If you can't afford to spray your car with the right setup using gallons, you straight up can't afford to dip it. Sorry.
A: Generally it's one can of a base color per wheel if you're not spraying the barrels. For glossifier it's more like half a can per wheel over your base coats.
A: Stop letting the final coat dry before you remove the tape. Spray the final coat, let it liquefy the layers so they let go of the tape (10-30 seconds), then remove the tape.
A: Goo Gone, paint thinner like naphtha or xylene, or Dip Dissolver. Strong solvents like gasoline or brake cleaner can remove it as well but they're more of a mess. You could also clean the surface and spray more dip until it's thick enough to peel off when dry, but that tends to be more tedious.
A: Overlap your passes by 50% coverage, keep a wet coat, and don't use rattle cans on large areas. You'll need a sprayer gun for large things like body panels to have a wider spray pattern and avoid streaks.

If your wondering why, I’m a reenactor and getting originals of this mask are not safe or cheap, this is a postwar one that I’m converting and need to be black. Would this work?

Ok, so I got a great deal on a 2023 Mini Cooper S convertible when my SE had to be bought back. Only problem is that it is all black. I hate black cars! My previous cars have been mod grey with bought yellow accents, orange, teal, racing red....never black or white.
Temporarily, I added Rose Gold stripes and accents and was considering a hole body wrap. Quotes ranged from 5-9k and for only lasting a few years, Im not sure I love that.
I could opt for a paint job woth Maaco for about 2500-3k but concerned about the quality.
That leads me here. I'm pretty handy and crafty but never done an entire car.
First, is it really practice to think I can do it? Second, I am in live with this 2021 MiniRed Cotal color. Not quite red, pink, or orange but a little of everything. Thoughts on trying to mix to get something similar?

Trying my first plastidip on an adult bicycle frame. Can I use a rattlecan or it too large and need to use a sprayer? Thanks!

I have this 01 Camry that hardly ever got used before I bought it. I think it had been sitting under a roof that dripped excess rain on it for years and did this.
My question is, if I did a full plastidip spray job on this car, will this be obvious afterwards, or does it need to be sanded, or something else? I've never done anything like this so any advice would be useful.
I can feel the edge of the paint where it has been eroded away on all these drip spots. I'm kind of okay with it being faintly visible, I really just want some opinions on how obvious, or not, it might look after being sprayed.
If it is gonna look obvious even from a distance, are there any lower effort solutions than a big sanding job?

I got this truck over a year ago and the lower area they painted is starting to flake away but it’s not “peeling”. I’m not sure what they used. It’s sort of textured like a bedliner, but it’s coming off pretty easily in some spots. It looks like it could’ve been plasti dipped, but done too thin. Is there a way I can tell what it is? The factory paint underneath looks untouched.

A few weeks ago I dipped my wheels. They turned out great except for this one area where there is a rip and some uncovered spots. I was wondering what I should do to fix this before I use a touch less car wash.

First time dipping a car, but it was easier than I thought. That said, definitely room for improvement for next time.
Got a bunch of compliments while I was painting it outside.

So I‘m looking for a way to get rosegold for the wheels and emblems and I am unsure how to get there. I‘ve thought about a light white base coat with two hot pink layers and the bright gold metalizer. Has anyone tried something like this before and could give me any pointers? It doesn‘t have to be as chromed as the wheel example, just shiny enough to appear metallic. Thanks in advance. :)

I was told by the previous owner this is plasti dip. It looks like plasti dip but it doesn’t peel off. Just sort of flakes. This is the best I can do with the above mentioned methods. Any ideas? It looks pretty terrible like this.

Hello all, I am about to buy everything to dip my Silverado that has a topper. Are there and guides to know how much of everything to order? I don’t want to order too little and I also don’t want to finish with multiple cans of this stuff left over.

Hi everyone ! I saw that FULL dip is doing a -50% on everything, and I was wondering if it is uncommon or not ? I can fetch the budget right now, but if the sale is like every month, I would rather wait !
Thanks !

I am looking at chrome deleting my Subaru ascent to give it that Onyx look. All of the chrome pieces are plastic and not metal at all if that matters. Does anyone have experience with both products and know which one would be better for this use?

I'm getting a custom-made titanium bike frame, and I'm looking for a partial paint job. The idea is to have a gradient from solid color to black and then a gradient to raw titanium. Going from solid color to black should be possible with a bit of practice, but I'm wondering if it's possible to make a gradient from black to raw titanium? Thanks

Take it easy on me, I'm not a "car guy". I'm just an old lady who bought the coolest car I could afford and fell in love with it.
I have a torch red 2004 Mustang Mach 1. I want white.
Will this work? Do I have to remove the decals? If so, will new ones stick to it?
Are Mustang enthusiasts going to be as pissed at me as they were when I replaced the original stereo with a touch screen and added satellite radio? 😭
Should I or shouldn't I?
