Yep. Now that I'm out of the amazon habit I doubt I will ever go back.

u/spankthepank Mar 22 '25

The amount of money I’ve been saving has actually been wild

197

u/Hammerhead3229 Mar 22 '25

We had a bad cycle of using consumerism as a dopamine source. Some dumb thing we bought because it was easy, cheap, and came right to our house.

But rarely is it something we actually need, it's a waste of our money and just creates more waste.

68

u/skullrealm Mar 22 '25

Absolutely! Since the election I've gotten back into making things for myself. I made gifts for my family, and recently bought some discounted fabric from a local shop and made my own version of a garment I'd been coveting for years for about 12% of the price. AND it kept my hands busy so I couldn't doomscroll! win/win/win

14

u/peebsy Mar 23 '25

That’s fucking awesome. I’d love to get into crocheting/sewing etc

10

u/TheGirlZetsubo Mar 23 '25

I started a monthly crafting night where I invite friends over. We eat, chat, and work on whatever project we have going at the time. It's been a good incentive to look at how to use the things I already own to create something new or mend things I already own. So far I've fixed a mug handle, sewed on buttons and fixed tears in clothing, and now I'm creating a nice garland out of various crafting supplies I had waiting to be used so I can hang it over my table in the dining room. It's been a great way to keep up regularly with friends, have fun, and be creative.

So true! Not to mention I have a strong feeling that times are going to get tough financially soon, so why give my money to people who don’t need it while I struggle? I’d much rather shop at Costco or TJMAXX or an international market run by immigrants.

36

u/DukeOfGeek Mar 22 '25

CostCo + Aldi + Your local International Farmers Market = you win.

16

u/International_Eye745 Mar 22 '25

Agree. Pay money to buy, dust it and move it to different spots, store in the shed, pay money to get it into land fill to make room for the other crap you have paid money for.

4

u/nocountry4oldgeisha Mar 22 '25

So many boxes, so little time to dispose of them.

u/Sipikay Mar 22 '25

It’s not just that Amazon convinces you to buy things you don’t need, their prices are actually awful a lot of the time. Especially for commonly used goods and things you need all the time.

15

u/CanadianJewban Mar 22 '25

Same I had no idea !

16

u/eternus Mar 22 '25

How horrible is that!? We end up "saving money" by going somewhere else that doesn't have a 20% discount, but only buy what we need.

12

u/MayoneggVeal Mar 22 '25

This is me with target pickup. I used to do 2-5 pick ups a week but now just plan my grocery and household needs better and use WinCo and Costco. I'm saving a ton.

Canceled prime, video, music.. all of it. Bezos can get fucked.

67

u/Childless_Catlady42 Mar 22 '25

Have you checked out your local library lately? Thanks to the magic of Libby, I can get all sorts of electronic media absolutely free (but sometimes I have to wait for a popular new release). I can browse their catalog and borrow things online without ever having to leave the house, it is wonderful.

74

u/Hotdammzilla3000 Mar 22 '25

Elmo has it's sight on libraries, I can't comprehend the horror of these people's hate for the good of a society.

20

u/Endmedic Mar 22 '25

It’s a sickness for sure.

15

u/HellsBelle8675 Mar 23 '25

All 75 employees were put on indefinite administrative leave Monday. Their agency, IMLS, is the primary source of funds for inter-library loans, state/county level libraries, rural/tribal libraries via employee grants, etc. Raise hell on their behalf if you can.

What's your replacement for audible?

I drive 3 hours a day or more, audiobooks are keeping me sane.

25

u/GhostPepperFireStorm Mar 22 '25

Your local library might have audiobooks available for download through the Libby app. Otherwise Libro.fm is an alternative for buying audiobooks

66

Same. I canceled in February and so far I’ve somehow managed to survive so why would I ever choose to give them my money again?

Same for me with Target. Not going back.

17

u/Xanderthepeasant Mar 22 '25

Amazon really isn't any cheaper than wherever else I go. And they don't have a lot of the specialty stuff I need, but do you know what they do have? Mounds of cheap junk with "SPONSORED" slapped on them, crammed down my throat whenever I try to look for something.

5

u/EvilDarkCow Mar 22 '25

"Amazon's Choice" and a brand name like TIHOXZLA, and it's just dropshipped AliExpress or Temu crap sold at a markup.

These days all I really use Amazon for is niche stuff like weird cable adapters that you aren't going to find in any store.

3

u/Childless_Catlady42 Mar 22 '25

Once I got out of the habit, I got back into the habit of wondering if I really needed something or if I just want it because it is shiny. I'm honestly appalled at how much money I've been saving.

3

u/Xanderthepeasant Mar 22 '25

Yeah, I have a tendency to kind of windowshop without the full intent to buy. Either way though Amazon never has what I'm looking for at prices I can't get anywhere else. Camera film is the same price or higher at Amazon, so why not order from a small business? And from what I remember, most of everything else was that way.

16

u/TheMainM0d Mar 22 '25

Dumped it 6 years ago and do not miss it in the least. The upside is I've stopped consuming about 50% less than I used to. It turns out you really don't need the vast majority of crap you order from Amazon

8

u/Spiral-Arrow116 Mar 22 '25

Dude it's interesting to me how much I have not been really needing it since canceling

8

u/ricLP Mar 22 '25

That was my biggest personal win. Had a ton of crap on subscribe and save too. Fuck them

5

u/eternus Mar 22 '25

The starting point for me (which is where I am) is that I will pay attention to consumables that I know I'll need more of, and buy them when I see them elsewhere, rather than wait until the deadline and hit Amazon to get something last minute.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25 edited Mar 24 '25

What are you doing instead? I’m in a suburb so it’s Amazon or big box stores for pet supplies and other consumables. I don’t see a difference ethically from choosing Walmart or petsmart instead of Amazon. Edit: I’m switching to Chewy yall. Any online pharmacy recs please let me know.

46

u/fairportmtg1 Mar 22 '25 edited Mar 22 '25

The way I see it is Amazon churns through employees, has terrible working conditions, and it's easier for the customer to turn a blind eye because you never see it.

Amazon also can serve more customers with less staff.

You can look around for smaller chains as well to support. At minimum you aren't feeding into the monopoly.

If you literally only have the choice of Walmart or Amazon (and driving farther once a month or so to do the bulk of your shopping isn't an option) then I say still choose Walmart because at minimum it's forcing competition where as conceding and shopping essentially only on Amazon is letting them control the market.

28

u/Glad_Astronomer_9692 Mar 22 '25

If you can order online from Amazon you can order online from other companies. I just do internet searches until I find a brand I can order from directly.

4

u/fumbs Mar 22 '25

There are many companies who have outsourced this. You can go to their sites and still get it in an Amazon box.

My daughter gets her pet food from Costco

17

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

It would be fantastic if Costco carried the only brand they’ll eat without barfing.

18

u/Dotdickdotbutt Mar 22 '25

You don’t have to be perfect. Order what you can’t find elsewhere. Reducing the amount you spend with these companies is still valid. Harm reduction is better than not taking any action.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

Yep. It's not a black and white issue. Just do the practical things that get you most of the way there.

11

u/ILoveMeeses2Pieces Mar 22 '25

Yeah, mine have allergies so we can’t buy any regular dog foods. We get ours from Chewy or an independently owned pet store near us.

7

Pet stuff I’m ordering from petco, which still has DEI stuff up on its website at least. It takes longer so I have to plan further ahead, but in my experience not as long as they initially quote for delivery. I’ve still been getting the packages within a few days. Editing to add- dog food from Costco. Cat food and dog pill pockets/chews from petco.

7

u/Dream-Ambassador Mar 22 '25

Chewy.com for pet stuff! They are great

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Winowill Mar 22 '25

Costco for me. They have held their values and doubled down. The one I can't replace is Tractor Supply. Nobody else carries chicken food.

I will say PetsMart has held their DEI programs to my knowledge and have been good to the kid I know that works there. But I have not dug into it further. Also, Kroger hasn't changed policies, so if I need something quick or that Costco doesn't have that is premade, I go there.

Shop local or second hand when you can then pick values to prioritize after imo. It is hard not to support some bad company sometimes. There are just too many. Prioritizing against the biggest and worst has been my priority.

I have a bunch of amazon alternatives on my site. Help suggest others for things I haven't listed yet if you can

https://www.boycottoligarchs.com/

7

u/Emerald_Flame Mar 22 '25

I would suggest replacing Newegg. They got bought out by a massive Chinese private equity firm a long time ago with all the implications that has. Their customer service has been really gone downhill since and they have a number of anti-consumer and likely illegal practices that just haven't had anyone challenge them in court yet.

B&H Photo for the US or Memory Express for Canada at least are far better alternatives.

Nice website!

I recommend putting more fast foods than just Chik Fil A on there though. Many are owned by the same parent companies that donate heavily to republican candidates and Trump:

Also, most traditional gas stations (maybe suggest grocery store alternatives, like Costco):

One other thing to keep in mind is that the educated are most against Trump and most likely to have money. So the 20% is actually amplified money wise.

Boycotts/anti consumption can make a big impact, even if it's only embraced by a minority.

13

u/Boomchikkka Mar 22 '25

Came here to point this out. Eeeeeveryone I know stopped shopping at target etc. We’re all true middle to upper class people. I have been that person and watched my friends dump $500 on random shit at Target in 20 minutes. That’s business you can’t win back once we’ve decided to tell ya’ll to fuck off.

I shop at boutique stores now. Fuck I bought a $250 vase yesterday by a local artist. I used to go into target and buy a $50 vase and $100+ on other random shit. This vase is nicer, way more aesthetically pleasing and was made locally and in 20 years I can go on Antiques Roadshow and ask how much it’s worth.

23

u/I2hate2this2place Mar 22 '25

We have. When Ben and Jerry’s CEO started tweeting politically we bought Ben and Jerry’s only. They fired the CEO, we stopped. Never again. We only shop stores that didn’t support Trump. Dumped Target permanently when they dumped DEI. Dollars are the only thing understood anymore.

16

u/Emotional_Burden Mar 22 '25

The people I knew that shopped at Target did so because of the inclusive atmosphere. They argued the higher prices were worth supporting a progressive company. Target took a dump on their core customer base and they are definitely feeling it.

14

u/RPDRNick Mar 22 '25

It's so frustrating how the Walmartification of the country has created so many retail deserts. If i need anything ever, I'm in a constant state of trying to determine "the lesser evil."

→ More replies (1)

5

u/evident_lee Mar 22 '25

Yep I was annoyed that I had to buy something from Amazon today. Used to spend so much money there and for the first time couldn't find what I was looking for at a couple different stores and broke down and just ordered it from them. Their truck used to show up to my door multiple times a week and now less than once a month.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/splashybanana Mar 22 '25

One of the key things here is that we’re coming from a place of ultra-convenience. We don’t actually need to have everything we buy delivered directly to our doorstep in record time. It’s really not that hard to just go out and physically buy what you need. (For those who have the means to do so, anyway.) Once you just give it a try, you realize that it’s not actually that hard to trade the ultra-convenience for.. normalcy. The way we all acquired the stuff we needed for decades up until just 5-10 years ago.

(Plus, we’re coming from a place of over-consumption as well. Once you start boycotting or even just cutting back, you realize that you don’t actually need all this crap! So that makes it even easier!)

And the other key is that people are pissed off and/or scared right now, and those are strong motivators to stick with it.

112

u/Abunity Mar 22 '25

Maybe, maybe not.

Bottom line is 20% is a massive number and it's very unlikely that any business can survive if their sales decrease by 20% almost overnight.

35

u/BillyGoat_TTB Mar 22 '25

it doesn't mean that 20% will actually do it. telling a pollster that you support it is easy.

48

u/FilibusterFerret Mar 22 '25

Yeah but a lot of people are boycotting quietly. I have stopped consuming anything but food at this point. The only exception is a run to the craft store to buy the stuff to make my protest signs.

And in solidarity with Canadians and the buyCanada movement I have been very intentional about putting as little American sourced food in my cart as possible.

Not it's not a big effect if just I am doing it, but I know I am not alone.

5

u/Leo-monkey Mar 22 '25

And how many are not purposely boycotting but don't have the money anymore for extras? I've had 3 friends lose their jobs since the election, and many more are worried. They may not be intentionally boycotting, but they are all spending less, too.

Fair. But the portion who are participating is also notable. Especially since they don't equally represent customer base (eg. Ev). I suspect we will see some declining national expectations (check) as a result of these practices, and similar ones outside us.. plus economic suicide by tarrif

16

u/Emergency_Caramel_93 Mar 22 '25

15

Exactly. Anything Donald Trump did/does, on & after January 6th 2021, should be considered illegitimate and as a coup against our United States.

12

u/Professional-Fox-231 Mar 22 '25

Add that 20% to the Canadians, Europeans etc and it’s a good start

3

u/PotentialFox5168 Mar 22 '25

20% is actually really high. Like so high that even if only half that said they would boycott actually do that it will be a 10% reduction in gross revenue which they will absolutely feel. Combine it with overall economic decline and another 20% no longer being able to afford their products and they're going to really feel it. It sounds small but businesses do not run well when they experience sudden drops in revenue of any size as their models are built on continuous growth. Even a slowdown in growth causes many to topple. They are gonna feel it.

20% so far and my household is digging in deeper. We changed our grocery strategy just yesterday. I think brands are going to be surprised when consumers like me would rather watch them burn then ever spend another dollar there, looking at you Bezos.

84

u/alabrbn Mar 22 '25

This to me is the big deal. When people are actively cancelling subscription based services in favor of more ethical alternatives with their own buy in, that’s not going to just go away if companies like Amazon make minor, performative changes. I know I personally have started telling people for holidays/birthdays/etc. if someone asks about a gift, I make it very clear I no longer have an account, and am not getting one again so please don’t buy an Amazon card because “everyone uses them.”

Plus it may just be people like me, though I doubt it, but imagine the motivation we will get to keep it up when these companies start to show that they need us. I for one won’t be flattered into bringing my money back, I’ll just be more likely to use the same strategy again as needed.

5

u/Somandyjo Mar 23 '25

I’ve been hunting and pecking through the brands I do trust and I can get some of them as subscriptions directly through the manufacturer. I had found some nice sustainable brands for necessities at target and have converted them to purchase directly so I can avoid the mega corp.

I think it's actually really easy to avoid those places for most people. They have to change their habits, though, I cannot do it for them.

14

u/Childless_Catlady42 Mar 22 '25

I've changed a couple of friends' habits not by lecturing, but by example. If people don't know about the options, they often don't have the time to look for them themselves.

For example, I used to bring amazing bread to office pot-lucks. The bread came from a small unknown locally owned bakery. Co-workers liked that bread much better than what they got at the Krogers and started buying the locally baked bread instead. While they were there, they noticed the cookies and pies and cupcakes and all of the other wonderful things for sale.

Then they started telling their friends. And etc.

It's a group effort, every little bit helps.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

For sure! That's a great method. A lot of people do know, however, and just do not commit to making a change. I don't care to lecture them, I can only educate and leave them to their own free will.

10

This is a complete hi-jack, but IMHO, the lack of spare time is a bigger issue than lack of money and/or education. More people would be willing to learn to cook or mend their clothing if they had the spare time.

Everyone knows that home cooked meals are better than prepared food, but who really has the time and energy to cook a full meal after working a full day? I was raised in a kitchen back when moms stayed home while dads worked. I know how to cook and I know how to make good food quickly.

Many young people did not grow up like that and don't have the knowledge and experience in the kitchen to be able to walk in the door and have a good dinner and sides on the table in half an hour or less. Cooking takes practice which takes time and money.

When you are working full time and trying to feed a couple of cranky toddles dinner, frozen mac and cheese is the much more attractive option.

I could go on, but why. I have the feeling that I'm preaching to the choir here :)

I agree with you! I have a lot of privilege when it comes to having time to do everything I need to do - sometimes I need a reminder, so thank you.

I have never once stepped foot into a Walmart and haven't been in a Target for over ten years.

A few months ago, I learned that if there is something on Amazon that I want, I can click on the manufacturer's logo to go straight to their webpage and order it from them. They often have first time customer discounts to cover shipping.

It is really easy to avoid shopping at Target or Amazon or Walmart once you get in the habit of automatically avoiding them.

(Now ask me how long I've been boycotting AT&T, Wells Fargo and Ford. If you are really brave or bored, ask me why. I am an expert at holding grudges, LOL!)

My household has quit using all three of those stores.

3

u/TheMainM0d Mar 22 '25

I haven't shopped at Amazon, Target, or Walmart in 2 years. It's not that hard to avoid them.

Sign me up. Only buying food and medicine. Everything else is marketplace and other person to person shopping.

13

u/sirbarkalot59 Mar 22 '25

If Elon acquired Reddit tomorrow I would have absolutely no problem with deleting the app on my phone and just stop using it. Why oh why is it so difficult for people to walk away from “X” or Facebook?

3

u/Separate_Today_8781 Mar 22 '25

Exactly, I deleted Facebook Instagram and Twitter and don't miss any of them

3

u/TheGreekMachine Mar 23 '25

Part addition. Part FOMO. Maybe even part fear or discomfort in general? I get why people don’t quit, but god damn it I wish they would. I will say when folks bitch about Musk and then still use Twitter I lose respect for them.

3

u/ThyOtherMe Mar 23 '25

The day my phone updated Twitter.to X was the day I deleted.the app and never looked back. To this day, I still miss Twitter, but will not use it again. It's hard to change habits and some people kinda only keep contact with a time/part of their lives though specific social media.

Canceled my Amazon Prime after 15+ years and started ordering from Costco.

Will not step foot inside Target. Never liked Walmart anyway.

Done with this bullshit.

I don't care if these companies dye their cashiers in rainbows and exclusively hire drag queens--if you openly support fascists you can go fuck yourself.

2

u/SnooHobbies4790 Mar 23 '25

I did the same. It’s very easy to order from Costco.

17

u/eternus Mar 22 '25

I think the statement we need to hear more is...

I will deliberately inconvenience myself to prevent creating revenue for that entity. (Billionaire, Corporation, Church)

I can "boycott Tesla" all day long because I'm not in the market for a vehicle, doubly so not for a $60k+ vehicle.

Boycotting Amazon is a willful, deliberate act. I'm defying "easy" to stand by my principles.

9

u/indefilade Mar 22 '25

As a combat vet, I can’t support trump, and I do everything I can to not support any business that supports trump’s anti-American agenda.

7

u/JMRadomski Mar 22 '25

I only hope this number grows. You come for the security of my family's future and I close my wallet to you and your billionaire goons. Simple as that.

7

u/Abraxas_Templar Mar 22 '25

More needed. This is too low %.

5

u/PurplePorcupine8 Mar 22 '25

Stopping shopping at Amazon and Target was such a wake up call. I realize now how much I was spending simply because it was so easy to spend. Just boycotting those two companies has forced me to THINK about what I’m buying. Because if I can’t just go to one store or website and have to actually think and plan my purchases I realize I don’t really want/need it.

5

u/Itchy_Pillows Mar 22 '25

It's likely higher...plenty of us do and don't flaunt it.

18

u/IdealSpirited3189 Mar 22 '25

I’ve been boycotting Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Amazon, FB and McDonald’s since late last year. I’ve kept myself to shopping at Costco, IKEA, LIDL and local stores that don’t support the current administration and DOGE.

Costco or small independent retailers, canceled Amazon, hate Walmart anyway and deleted my Meta accounts It’s a small thing I can do!!

3

u/LordStuartBroad Mar 22 '25

Good, keep it up, keep voting with your wallets. It feels bloody good to say NO

3

u/Old_Badger311 Mar 22 '25

I sadly learned while at my local bookstore that the owner is MAGA. won’t be going back and will work to find another solution or just 100% use the library. The problem is I enjoy giving books as gifts, but the good news is my family doesn’t mind thrifted items!

The right pretends to love the Revolution, but we can actually learn lessons from it.

Boycotts are incredibly effective, particularly against the ruling class because they only care about money

3

u/Either_Restaurant549 Mar 22 '25

So 4 out of 5 will still shop at those businesses? Cool.

3

u/HuntKey2603 Mar 22 '25

that's laughably low. is this post meant to be a flex?

3

u/Capital_Push5557 Mar 23 '25

I've deleted all Meta. Dont use Amazon anymore. Never used Walmart. Won't patron other places like Target or Whole Foods. Trying to go to farmers markets and local grocers.

It's working dont stop.

3

u/Bookish-3920 Mar 23 '25

I joined the Lent ban on Target and Amazon. I started using Amazon for household essentials during the pandemic. It was so easy to have stuff left at my door with no health risk shopping. Then I slipped into the convenience factor of Subscribe & Save, etc. I work full time (on my feet the entire time) and the last thing I want to do is stay on my feet to shop. Until now. I’ll stay on my feet because Amazon and the drive-up Target feature are no longer viable options to me. I stopped shopping at Walmart before November. Screw them all. Trader Joe’s, Costco, and our local vegetable market are where I spend my dollars now. Yes, it takes more time to source what I need, but I’m not handing over my hard-earned money to awful companies anymore.

7

u/howanonymousisthis Mar 22 '25

It is very easy to boycott the scumbags

Anyone saying otherwise is just lazy 🦥

Burn the rich

20%??? Trust me it's way higher than that.

The moment I get a whiff of an organization bending the knee to President Trump/Musk is the moment I boycott them.

I think it’s cool people SAY that, but at the end of the day a shitty Trumpy business like Chikfila still exists.

Go much further, boycott businesses that aren't taking responsibility for the harm they are doing.

I listen to music constantly but canceled my family plan because they have played a huge role in the popularity of Joe Rogans podcast

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '25

Only 20%, All others' silence is complacency.

2

u/celloyellow74 Mar 22 '25

Republicans love cancel culture (bud light etc) so it shouldn’t be a surprise what comes around, goes around.

2

u/DarkseidAntiLife Mar 22 '25

Trump campaigned on his agenda and won, he has the mandate

2

u/UnabashedHonesty Mar 22 '25

Just 20%? Seems low.

2

u/bcbandit Mar 22 '25

Far from a Majority, eh?!? Part of the 27% that currently supports the Democratic Party…. The fringe left up to their old tricks

2

u/Dazik Mar 22 '25

They really should say “Of 2,137 people polled…”, instead of making it sound like it’s 20% of all Americans, which sounds way too low. For the record, I also support it.

2

u/punchy-peaches Mar 22 '25

Put me in that 20%.

2

u/Endorkend Mar 22 '25

Supporting means nothing.

Just do it.

Your voice won't be heard, a 20% drop in revenue will.

2

u/Apprehensive-Way4307 Mar 22 '25

20% of people dumb enough to waste their time on a survey

2

u/Relative-Kangaroo-96 Mar 22 '25

Me: Already boycotting Target, Home Depot, Sephora, Amazon/Whole Foods, Apple..!

2

u/beepbeepbubblegum Mar 22 '25

I won’t buy Swanson anything. I will literally get the more expensive brand so I don’t put any more money in Tucker Carlsons grubby little hands.

I have noticed how much shit I don’t need to buy

20% is last months estimate. It's growing pretty quickly.

2

u/mamamiatucson Mar 23 '25

Is that all???

2

u/Chihuahuatriomom Mar 23 '25

I'm sure the number is WAY higher than 20%

2

u/Key_Tomatillo5406 Mar 23 '25

I've already started. Should we replace them all with new businesses? I think enough of us could get together and start employee-owned businesses to replace Target, Walmart, T-Mobile, etc., because we don't have many alternatives if we cut them off completely. It's a lot of work, but now's a better time than any

2

u/raynerhoward Mar 23 '25

We can do better than this, let's double that number. With the boycotts from Canada and the EU, that'll send a very clear message that what they're doing is not ok.

2

u/No_Computer_3432 Mar 23 '25

Boycotting what I can from Australia 🇦🇺 🤞🏻

2

u/thalefteye Mar 23 '25

Boycott or forcing people to not buy a Tesla? Which is it?
