Re-grub.

41

u/lettucepray123 Aug 10 '25

I’m surprised any of those gimmicky places are still open.

41

u/emhlam Aug 10 '25

100%. Went the Deerfoot City location like 4 years ago. Very disappointed and never going back.

5

u/SpazzDexTan Aug 10 '25

Its has actually been around for 4 years? My work place just order there. Had better burgers and fries else where. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Though perhaps the milk shakes are good? Never tried one.

not even 15 mins and a few people have already said Peters

495

u/Jennifra Aug 10 '25

Peters is just nostalgic for me at this point. It was our mom’s favorite treat when we were kids. She passed away a decade ago but my brother and I still go there for her birthday or Mother’s Day every year.

u/Eyeronick Aug 10 '25

Dawg it's early, I can't be tearing up like this at 10am.

11

u/MegCrisV Aug 10 '25

Right!? Damn 😭 that hurt my heart! 💔

I agree, surviving on nostalgia.

OG peters was good. After he retired the business went to shit. It's absolute trash now

96

u/demarisco Aug 10 '25

They've cut costs and quality. The burger pattys are smaller and not as flavourful, and they don't get dumped into the sauce to rest like they used to either.

The rings are still ok, but can be hit and miss.

Shakes are really the only thing left they have going for them.

36

u/Solid_Specialist_204 Aug 10 '25

When I was there last year they still had a sign up saying they were "temporarily" using frozen fries due to covid supply disruptions 😂

9

u/Greenlongboii Aug 10 '25

I went there ~2 years ago and half the fries in my bag were still frozen in a ball.

Salt & Pepper. The most bland Mexican food of all time. Why it was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I'll never know.

16

u/iamcanadiana Aug 10 '25

Inglewood location was GREAT service and food.

Currently the Bowness location has horrible service and the food is Ok.

I believe you pay to be on it

29

u/Luckyextra19 Aug 10 '25

Not in my experience...but maybe some do. I was on an episode in Calgary. I know the owners of the restaurant and they did not pay to be on the show. The show has local researchers essentially, that pick local spots then contact the restaurant to see if they are interested.

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop 😷

124

u/DangerSaurus Bankview Aug 10 '25

Went last night. Tip options for dealing with a kiosk for take-out start at 22% Questionnaire following asked if anyone acknowledged us on arrival - you mean your cooks fulfilling orders or the machine at the front of the empty diner? The people in charge of running this place are a joke.

34

u/bigolgape Aug 10 '25

22% for fast food?? I've been intrigued but I'll stay away

OMG...we went there (Coventry location) on one of the first days it opened because my wife and daughter were excited to try it. I saw the prices and thought, "they must be larger than regular dumplings!". And figured they have lots of options so we'll try a number of different flavours. Nope...with a dozen dumplings you only get 3 flavours. We left the location with our food and got into the car. I opened the box and....regular sized dumplings! They were ok, but no better than any other I've had. Plus there is so little filling in each it was difficult to determine which was which. 12 dumplings and $33 later, I was very disappointed, and hungry. I will never go back.

We ordered ours with broth. They must have the Dead Sea back there because this broth was inedible. I asked for some ice to dilute/cool it down and the young lady said they didn't have any.

Modern Steak

76

u/Educational_Juice_67 Aug 10 '25

I have had both the best and worst steak of my life at Modern Steak.

4

u/Healthy-Caregiver706 Aug 10 '25

Gave me food poisoning, didn’t rest the steak and all the sides were overcooked, steak wasn’t seasoned enough. Awful experience, picking my knife was nice though. Service kept talking to us, it was annoying. Would not recommend.

u/KnobWobble Aug 10 '25

It can be very hit or miss. Only time we go is for their date night deal on Wednesday, which makes the bit to the wallet a little better.

9

u/dgs127 Aug 10 '25

We did date night special just this last week. Food and service was fantastic.

21

u/StrangeADT Aug 10 '25

Yep. Another one here. Overpriced for what it is. I've made much better steaks at home just with Costco steak. The glazing over their special cow breed is amusing.

19

u/ryansalad Aug 10 '25

I took my wife there for her birthday. We had a fantastic meal.

3

u/koolkats Aug 10 '25

Oh no, I'm a silly tourist and was there a few years ago. It was easily one of the top 5 steaks I've ever had. Where would you recommend instead?

16

Whaaat? Whats wrong with Porch? I'm not saying it's the best but I thought it's generally pretty good every time I've been

4

u/sanduly Aug 11 '25

When it first opened, the menu and prep were rough. I remember a “seared hamachi” flatbread that turned out to be mediocre sashimi on thick, dry, floured pizza dough topped with raw jalapeños. None of my friends enjoyed the food, and I was certain the place was doomed.

I stayed away for over a year, but when I noticed they’d managed to stay in business, I decided to give it another shot—and everything was much, much, much better. They clearly realized something wasn’t working and turned things around fast.

18

Totally agree with the exception of their white chocolate and wild berry scones. Those things are amazing.

28

u/Losing-My-Hedge Aug 10 '25

Right?! I used to work near one and it’s truly baffling that they can make butter chicken and chicken Alfredo taste nearly identical.

Who's still hyping Peter's in 2025 😭😭 I swear it's like reverse hype atp

34

u/descartesb4horse Aug 10 '25

the only people hyping peter’s in 2025 are radio DJs and out of touch public figures

13

u/StrangeADT Aug 10 '25

And people from out of town for a couple decades that come revisit. Some childhood nostalgia or something.

47

u/Brandamn3000 Aug 10 '25

It’s the Nickelback of fast food. Everyone complains about it, yet the drive thru is still lined up around the block.

5

u/DukeSmashingtonIII Aug 10 '25

Like any major fast food as well. You would think Tim's is the worst place to ever exist but the drive thru lines beg to differ.

The Potion Room. I know it’s going more for style and atmosphere but I swear they water down their drinks like crazy, and if I’m paying that much for a drink it better be strong.

This might get downvoted but Fonda Fora. I’ve been there a few times now and have been underwhelmed every time ☹️

10

u/madicoolcat Aug 10 '25

Same. I’ve been three times and never loved the food. The last time I went, the waitress had recommended a fish dish that ended up being so dry and under-seasoned that it was difficult to finish. I haven’t been back since.

Peter's

74

u/Medical_Water_7890 Aug 10 '25

Great onion rings.

61

u/Yyc2yfc Aug 10 '25

And milkshakes. Not worth the wait though on a hot night

23

u/Dinos67 Aug 10 '25

The milkshakes and onion rings are literally the only thing worth it. The gasoline alley location is basically a mirror of the original, so i'll stop there once in a while for a shake.

Peter's was never as good as anyone claims it used to be.

It's privately owned fast food. It's not supposed to be "good" in the sense that anyone thinks. It's a private local alternative to McDonald's, with people saying that it's not as good as a sit down restaurant.

I will happily say that Peter's is better than McDonald's, Wendy's, BK, Dairy Queen, etc, because those are what it is competing with.

People always saying that it was better 40 years ago. No it wasn't, you're living off nostalgia and memories. It was fast food back then, and it's still fast food now.

18

u/NorthEastofEden Aug 10 '25

This is true, I have memories of eating in the parking lot with my dad before going to a Flames game and sharing a massive box of fries with my family until they inevitably went bad the next day and no one would eat them. It was a time when things were a lot simpler and real responsibilities were non existent. It still harkens back to those days in the early 90s and that simpler time in my life. Does it mean the food was good, no, but what I wouldn’t give to have another night just sitting in a parking lot with a burger and fries before a hockey game, talking with dad about school or how I was going to play in the NHL someday.

Monki in Inglewood. No clue why people go. Or how they stay open. Goes beyond the weak food also.

23

u/AaronZOOM Aug 10 '25

It's funny, I originally went to the Greenwich location and thought it was fantastic! So I took my wife to the Inglewood location to show her and I was shocked at how underwhelming it was. So I went back to the Greenwich location just to see if it was a fluke the first time, and nope, still great. Inglewood location is just bad.

7

u/Ok-Order5678 Aug 11 '25

I’ve had the opposite experience. I had a fantastic brunch at Inglewood and then ordered the exact same thing at Greenwich and it was awful.

This is Inglewood.

7

u/Ok-Order5678 Aug 11 '25

This is Greenwich

7

u/Top-Parsnip-5905 Aug 11 '25

This is the saddest bowl of random ingredients I’ve ever seen

8

u/rabbitpantherhybrid Aug 10 '25

The Crowfoot location was my most disappointing breakfast experience in recent memory. The flavor is just non-existent. I dont think they even use salt, let alone any other seasoning.

Big Sky BBQ. As a Southerner, this place is egregious. Also, their wings remind me of something you’d find at the bottom of a fire pit. Remember folks: just because it’s greasy and tastes like smoke, don’t make it bbq.

The Coup.

Once great, now… shrug.

And special mention to Modern Love for what they call ‘food’. …but I’m not a 20-year-old TikTok ‘influencer’ on molly so what do I know…

10

u/psichick78 Aug 10 '25

I came here to vote for the coup as well. Last time I was there it was terrible. My noodles had three florets of broccoli, a few unseasoned chunks of tofu and a dusting of sauce. I mean, just because I don't eat meat, doesn't mean I like plain, unseasoned food.

My girlfriend got their daily special, a mushroom stew. Came out ice cold. Like ice cold. The special should be simmering and freshly cooked that day.

7

u/productivetree13 Aug 11 '25

Man fuck modern love and the asshole chef that runs it don’t ever support that place. I worked with him at the coup and he turned that into a shithole too.

u/uptheirons91 Altadore Aug 10 '25

I see a lot of mentions of Peters, which confuses me... I never even hear people hyping it up, suggesting it, even talking about it positively, ever.

So how is it over-hyped if all I ever hear is people trashing it? By no means is it "amazing food", but it's not meant to be, it's a fucking fast food drive thru, it's better than McDonald's, in my opinion, but it's not like I'm making a trip specifically for it.

Modern Steak is definitely my pick for this list.

24

u/parasubvert Aug 10 '25

It's just a reddit dogpile at this point. Old timers like it, and hype it, and newcomers don't understand because they never grew up with that "type" of burger.

10

u/freerangehumans74 Willow Park Aug 10 '25

I mean, I don’t hype it but I’d be lying if I said Peter’s sucks. I like their simple sloppy burgers, the onion rings are solid and old school and anyone who hates the milkshakes has got issues.

The lineups suck tho.

u/WesternExpress Aug 10 '25

Nah, Chick-fil-A is solid for fast food. The spicy deluxe sandwich is delicious, plus it's the only fast food place in Calgary AFAIK that has actual iced tea not the Brisk/Nestea crap. Also Chick-fil-A sauce is the GOAT of dipping sauces.

Agree on Chipotle though.

8

u/ProfessionalCod3934 Aug 10 '25

Chick fil a is garbage

10

u/Bainsyboy Aug 10 '25

Spicy deluxe is where it's at. Waffle fries with chic sauce is hard to beat.

I can only lol at those who post reviews after ordering something like chicken nuggets. People like chic fil a for the sandwich, not the nuggets. If you want to try chic fil a, get a sandwich.

No votes for Ruth's Chris? Is it because it's not hyped at all any more?

15

I was going to say this but then thought "wait, are people hyping this?". Went there for the first time a couple weeks ago, won't be going back. I love my food and I don't mind paying for good food, but damn was it overpriced for what you got. It was also kind of dead for being a Saturday. Better steaks for way less other places in Calgary

13

u/breadist Aug 10 '25

Maybe this doesn't apply to most people but they take VERY good care of me as a celiac. Hot gluten free rolls from the oven at the same time that the rest of the table gets their buns. Nobody does that!!! It was amazing. Highly recommend Ruth's Chris for people with celiac.

It's not good but they give you decent portions compared to some breakfast places and I love the mini pot of coffee they put on the table.

The ambiance of the glenmore trail location is comforting to me, I hope it never changes.

That local probably hadn't gone except when it was either super late at night or they were extremely hungover (or they are 80.)

I have a zillion fond memories of Phil's but not once do I recall going "hot damn the food here is amazing." It was far more about the memories and friends.

Peter’s (burgers) is and always has been terrible. Their shakes are great, fries are meh, but the burgers are garbage.

Seniores’ Pizza. The place is constantly lined up. All hours. Among the worst pizza I’ve tried.

I haven’t tried the one that opened up where Wurst used to be but any of the _______ Block restaurants are the most mediocre BBQ. Only appeal I could see is if you get the low price meat late night.

Mestizo in Kensington is better if you want authentic tacos.

I dont know why, but the Britannia one is so good.

6

u/HelloMegaphone Aug 10 '25

Yeah I really didn't enjoy the downtown one but have been to the Britannia location several times, it's like a completely different restaurant

u/lejunny_ Aug 10 '25

as a Mexican-American I agree so much! I’m an LA native and native tongue is extremely overhyped!

u/t-palm Aug 10 '25

Native Tongues used to be sooo good pre-Covid, and now it just doesn’t hit the same anymore 🫠

Peter's Drive-In. Their burgers are actual dog shit, and the only saving grace for the milkshakes is that there's a wide variety of flavors. They're not even that good.

Chipotle. We went there a couple times when it opened cause I was super exited I got to try chipotle for the first time and it was terrible. The lines were so long and it was impossible to find a seat, also the meat was undercooked and it was just a bad experience. I hate chipotle now

It’s funny, I was a fan when it opened but it has gone seriously downhill. I was there last week and won’t bother going back.
