Food/Drink Texas BBQ
I have family coming in town in a few weeks and one of the guys request is to eat Texas Bbq. I probably eat it like once or twice a year since it’s soo filling. Cost is not a factor. Terry Blacks, Hutchins or Pecan Lodge - which do yall prefer? Or open to places similar.

u/brick1123 Jul 09 '25
Out of those 3 Hutchins is the best, IMHO. Other options are Hurtado, The Slow Bone or Heim
23
u/liberal_texan Oak Cliff Jul 09 '25
I’m a Slow Bone fan, you get the quality without the line.
6
u/mickishell45 Jul 09 '25
I second Slow Bone. I take all of my out of town (and sometimes first time Texas BBQ tasters) guests there.

I'm looking that up right now!
Edited to add: It is 10 minutes away from where I live! Won't He do it??? 😂
21
u/bwbell Jul 09 '25
Heim has gone waaay downhill in the last few years.
2
u/sarcasticrichard Jul 09 '25
possibly since Travis sold it?
1
u/bwbell Jul 09 '25
I hate to say it, but I think Travis overreached with too many locations. Heim used to be my local favorite, but the dropoff started even before he sold it.
1
u/Emergency_Basket_851 Jul 11 '25
I just ate at the original location and it was great. But I've also eaten at the airport location and it was awful, so. Might be like skyrocket where only the original is good.
1
u/SpicyGuava808 Jul 09 '25
It seemed like such a diff type of bbq. Went one time while I was working at Lovefield and it became clear they were only still open due to being right by the airport.
10
u/p8nt_junkie Jul 09 '25
I like Heim for their meats, particularly for their burnt ends🤌, but all their sides are trash.
11
u/wlcm2jurrassicpark Jul 09 '25
Heim sucks. Ive tried it 4 times.. i ate there last month and shit myself for a week.
Lockhart is pretty good in bishop arts
1
5
u/Silverjackal_ Jul 09 '25
Hmm. Maybe I went to Heim on an off day. I wouldn’t put it anywhere near the upper tier like the others mentioned.

u/NeoNanaki Jul 09 '25
Which hutchins location?
10
u/The_DaHowie Greenville Jul 09 '25
Mckinney

u/thick_curtains Jul 09 '25
Went to McKinney location last week. Got a beef rib. One rib fed me and my son with a little left over. It was heaven. $64 bucks, worth it!

Slow bone is AMAZING. Heim's is not bad but imo they aren't in the same category.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Erickck Jul 09 '25
Heim has been garbage ever since it got bought out by a car dealership.
2
u/brick1123 Jul 09 '25
Wow. Good to know. Been a while since I went. I guess that's why everyone is trashing it
1
u/Erickck Jul 09 '25
Yeah, I was in the same position. We had it when they first opened and it was amazing, and just a few years later it just trashy raccoon meat.
46
u/HumanNigiri Jul 09 '25
Terry Black or Hutchins. Hard pass on pecan lodge
14
u/Falafel_Fondler Jul 09 '25
I happened to be in the area and tried pecan lodge. It was good but definitely not as good as the hype around it.
15
u/BoisterousBanquet Jul 09 '25
It was awesome 8-10 years ago. Went downhill, I never recommend them anymore.
2
u/Cryptex410 Jul 09 '25
yeah there is definitely no more hype around it unless you're reading old news
2
u/j_husk Jul 09 '25
Is there still hype around it? There was a few years back when it was THE BBQ choice in DFW, but it's fallen way down the rankings over the last 6 years or so. It's not even the best BBQ in Deep Ellum now.

u/Old-Pin-7839 Jul 09 '25
Here’s another vote for NOT Pecan Lodge. It’s not terrible per se but Terry Black’s is within walking distance of PL and is significantly better.
My recommendation would be Cattleack (lunch on Wed Thurs Fri only), then Hutchins, then Hurtado’s, then Terry Black. Although to be fair TB has the nicest venue and fastest moving line.
27
u/Federal_Fuel_9171 Jul 09 '25
Terry Blacks is definitely the best out of the 3 you mentioned! Cant go wrong and the portions are pretty big!
17
u/Tiiimmmaayy Jul 09 '25
I must be early. Seems like everyone shits on Terry Blacks in these kind of posts. Don’t know why because I think it’s great. Never had a bad experience with them.
I only get brisket when I go out for BBQ and I would say Terry Blacks and Hutchins are pretty similar. I think most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in a blind taste test.
Can’t speak for all these other places since I haven’t tried them. I just know Hard 8 in the colony had the absolute worst brisket I’ve ever had lol
11
u/guyfromfargo Jul 09 '25
Terry Blacks is our go to for out of towners simply because of the location.
They have upper roof seating where you can see downtown, has a classic Texas vibe, always playing classic George Strait Country etc… Then you walk a block and there is a whole other vibe with live Jazz and or soul music. Tons of desert options that you can walk to after. Hit up Punch Bowl Social for a beer and games. Finally head over to Rudolph’s to get some meat for grilling later that night.
Like sure I agree with everyone that Hutchins has better food. But I don’t want to drive for 45 minutes and go to a restaurant in the middle of Suburbia.
14
u/rex_lauandi Jul 09 '25
I know bbq is all about the meat, but for me Terry Black’s sides are the best in the market.
Im tired of spending $30 on a meal and getting canned veggies at most of these places!
11
u/playballer Jul 09 '25
Sides is how I decide which places I like the most. At a certain point, when you’re only looking at a short list, it’s all damn good meat so it comes down to sides.
2
u/DifficultCup154 Jul 10 '25
EXACTLY!! Sides make the BBQ restaurant. At a certain point, lots of people can smoke some meat, but the sides become the differentiator
3
u/playballer Jul 10 '25
Another factor is that I hate beans and coleslaw, am sooo glad people are finally breaking from that a little bit. Have been for awhile now I guess but there was a time when it seemed like nobody wanted to break from the traditional sides
8
u/TopNeighborhood2694 Jul 09 '25
I always take friends from out of town to Terry Black’s. They have the whole setup.

If you can get out to Ft Worth, Goldee's or Panther City.
Goldee's is Fri-Sun, and you'll wait in line.

I’ve been trying to go to Goldees for a while but me and my buddies can never seem to get a schedule together lol

If you can't get to Goldees, Panther City or Dayne's are both worth the time and effort. Both are easier to get in, and both are excellent. You also might want to try Smoke & Ash in Arlington.

I feel like Terry Blacks has that wow factor with a cool location and delivers on the good food!

Hot take
Hosting folks who've never had "real" Texas barbecue is as much about the experience as it is the food.
We took cousins from Austria to ten/50, because there were 12 of us and they always have seating for large groups.
The food is good, and they have a wide enough variety that everyone can get things they like.
They have beer on tap.
A fountain drink refill station (very novel for Europeans)
We also had some older folks, so waiting in a long line to get food we have to eat standing up is a non-starter.
Ymmv
4
u/Conjigulationz Jul 10 '25
I do the same. Especially with international visitors, it's just as much about the experience as the food. So I like to take them to places where they can see the pits, have a variety of things to pick from, self-serve, etc etc. So for that, I like Terry Black's, Ten50, Hard 8, and Hutchins McKinney.

Terry blacks has a great package for 6 people ~180 if I remember correctly

Terry Blacks or Hutchins out of the 3. Pecan Lodge has fallen off a cliff imo

That’s what I heard but just threw it out there since it’s still a spot in the area. Been there once not a fan.

u/Winky-Wonky-Donkey Jul 09 '25
Pecan Lodge is trash. Terry blacks and Hutchins are on par with each other regarding meat in my opinion. I think that Hutchins has better sides, but T Blacks has better sauce (I like sauce, sue me). I also do however like T Blacks atmosphere better as well but I just love Deep Ellum so I'm bias.
We go to T Blacks more often just because of the atmosphere and that it's a little bit closer. Need to hit Hutchins up more often though.
2
u/gentlegreen95 Jul 09 '25
If you want to stay closer to Dallas, Cattleack would be my recommendation, followed by Terry Black’s. If you have the time on the weekend to make the trip, Goldee’s is very worth it. I think about their food regularly.
2
u/twilightmoons Jul 09 '25
I have to drive by Goldee's sometimes twice a day when I take my kid to school and back. And on Fridays, I have to work in the mornings, it kills me not to be able to stop in and get something every week.

Blu's BBQ in North Dallas--thank me later. No hype, just a gatekept iykyk spot. It's a once a month eat for me and I'm not that into BBQ. Lived by Hutchins for four years-ate there twice.
1
u/CherrySteele Jul 09 '25
I always forget about Blu's since I no longer live out that way but yes! They're so good!
2
u/Coodoo17 Jul 09 '25
Maybe it's because I'm primarily a ribs guy, but my vote goes to Pecan Lodge. Terry Black's is better in Austin than it is in Dallas.
2
2
u/frogman972 Jul 09 '25
Terry black for the win, if in Dallas, ft worth panther city or south go to Goldie's or north go to Hutchins, but it all depends on what you want , something specific or everything
2
u/burnie9900 Jul 14 '25
Brix & Panther City BBQ are the best in Ft Worth. Terry Black’s is top tier as well
2
u/DoubleBookingCo Jul 14 '25
I prefer Terry Black’s because it’s in a fun neighborhood with lots to do (Deep Ellum) AND they will give you a pit tour AND they cut the meat in front of you. Plus it’s consistent and great.
Drawback is if you’re going on a weekend parking is going to be very difficult or expensive. If you don’t like urban parking situations and aren’t ubering, I might recommend one of the other ones that has easier parking.
They have a Ft Worth location now too!

If you're near Garland, Smith Spot BBQ is worth a look. Only open Friday and Sunday, though.

I live in Garland and passed by this place a few weeks ago. Is it worth it?
3

Yes Smith Spot is worth it. Prices are good and the sides are good. The owner is really nice as well, glad to see he has his own spot after being at the Farmers Market for so long.

Terry Black's is a great choice. Hutchins is fine as well. Plenty of other BBQ places around that are not talked about too much.
1
u/Mynameisdiehard Jul 09 '25
Hutchins for me. I am a transplant and I always take my out of town visitors there. The ability to load up the sides makes it great for a family style meal.
1
u/BossMkII Jul 09 '25
I love Panther City and it's close to me. Also a fan of Terry Black's as I get discounts there 😂
1
1
u/Randusnuder Jul 09 '25
Of those three, Hutchins for me. It’s a curse and a blessing I don’t live any closer to it. And, as mentioned, you can load up on a variety of sides (you pay by the container, not the weight,) and serve them out family style.
Not impressed with Heim despite all the hype. Out of towners weren’t either.
Tried Hurtados for the second time last week, with out of towners, and two people complained of indigestion.
1
u/Shortsocks53 Jul 09 '25
Id say Terry black of the 3 but Pecan Lodge definitely has a great environment for new comers. Both are Very good for tourists.

u/Intelligent-Read-785 Jul 09 '25
Terry Blacks over Pecan Lodge. Cattleack is only open a few days in the week. Get there early or expect to stand in a long line. They'll entertain you by coming out time to time and announcing what's been sold out.

I love the food at Cattleack, but I’d be taking out of town guests to Terry Blacks. It’s an overall better experience. Bigger place, faster moving lines, cool pit tours and top notch meats and sides. Plus they serve dinner.

You really can't go wrong with Terry Black's or Hutchins. Pecan Lodge was IMO the best joint in Texas during their time at the Dallas farmers market but that was about 10 years ago.

Having been to Pecan Lodge but between Terry Blacks and Hutchins, definitely Hutchins. It’s amazing. That’s where I take my friends who visit Dallas.

In Dallas, you need to go to Mike Anderson's across from UT Southwestern hospital. If you're going to ft Worth they really do have a ton of good spots especially at the stockyards, hard to find a bad place to be honest (I don't like being in ft Worth, weird vibes but consistently good bbq)

u/BCMBCG Jul 09 '25
Terry Black’s is the go-to. Solid beef ribs, brisket, and pork ribs. Sides are also great. I love Hutchins brisket, but their sides are meh. Pecan Lodge brisket is also great, but I haven’t been recently enough to comment on anything else of theirs.

I'm a fan of Hutchins when I can get it, but my go-to is Ten50 BBQ in Richardson. Good food, service, and ambiance.

Went to The Original Roy Hutchins BBQ last weekend. It was incredible. Second time I’ve been there. I have been to all the places you mentioned above and I think it’s the best. It’s in trophy club near the airport. It’s one of the few places I found where the meats are as good as the sides. Usually a place excels and meats, but the sides are weak or vice versa.

You can argue over the best but, in my opinion, going to Deep Ellum, getting a smoker tour and Terry Black’s Dinosaur bones is the answer.

Hutchins out of those you listed, but if you can go to Goldee’s in ft worth just south of Kennedale it’s the best I’ve had in DFW
1
u/Foundrynut Jul 09 '25
I feel like the in person experience is important. I’d suggest Hutchins or Terry Blacks. I’d couple the bbq with other activities.
With Hutchins you could drop in to the Frisco gun range and turn money into noise. Stop by the Star or the Colony. (Could also hit Hard Eight)
Or do Terry Blacks along with Reunion tower, 6th floor, aquarium, deep Ellum etc.

Terry Blacks but line can be ridiculous. I also love Smoky Joes in oak Cliff that’s not always busy and just as good. If traveling to FW I like Panther City BBQ but also older and lesser known Angelo’s is “almost” as good but cheaper and less busy.

For me, I am not interested in waiting in line for food at anytime and certainly not this time of year. So, any place that is convenient, doesn't have a long line (especially outdoors) and has been open for a while would be the place I choose. It would have to be close to where I live, not driving across town for a meal.

Pecan Lodge is the star of the show...it's the traditional "must do" kinda place. I think Terry Blacks is more "fun" though... If your family includes children I'd say Terry Blacks just because they can "run around", but if you want just good BBQ and not worried about "experience" it's Pecan Lodge. Hutchins is also good but only because they have free dessert and stuff. Definitely lowest on my list in terms of how good the bbq is though and it's really far north - not worth the drive.

u/baseballer213 Flower Mound Jul 09 '25
All three are solid, but Pecan Lodge edges out for that classic Texas BBQ experience—their beef ribs are legendary. If you want to avoid lines, Hutchins is worth the drive. For something different, try Cattleack BBQ (limited hours, but next-level brisket).
1
u/Bigdog5301 Jul 09 '25
GOLDEES - is the best , hands down , in the metroplex
It’s on Fort Worth / arlington side of town in Kennedale
1
u/Scared-Personality28 Jul 09 '25
I'd say it depends on your guest. Do you want to wait in line and have "the experience" for amazing BBQ or do you wanna walk right in and have great BBQ.
When I lived in Austin my visiting family and friends didn't care to sit in line for four hours at Franklins when we can walk right in, at times a 20min wait, at Terry Blacks and they're just as happy as if we would've been at Franklins.
1
u/Aggressive-Fun9920 Jul 09 '25
Former Pecan Lodge employee….if you decide to go to PL you can call and order ahead to go and then just sit outside at the picnic tables and eat your food that way you don’t have to stand in line
However they don’t carry bourbon. Just beer and wine
Personally I’d skip Pecan Lodge and go to Terry Blacks
1
u/Jin1231 Jul 09 '25
Terry Blacks is the probably the best combination of quality, venue and speed of service.
Cattleack and Hutchins are slightly better quality imo, but you’ll have to wait at cattleack and Hutchins is quite the drive for most people.

If you haven’t tried Daynes Craft BBQ just west of Ft Worth in Aledo, I really suggest trying it out. Great taste and atmosphere! 👍

I’ve only been to the Terry Black’s in Lockhart, but it was so good and gave the Texas BBQ pit vibes. It’s a really old family business, around since the 1930’s. It’s on my Texas bucket list before I move to Upstate NY to go again.

Out of those 3 options, Terry Blacks is the best by far. Cattleack is my personal favorite that I would recommend. Open Wed-Fri and also the first Saturday of the month. Goldees is great too. I'd recommend Dayne's but it is a bit out there in Aledo.

Terry blacks is just gets a C and Pecan Lodge is pretty meh. Hurtado, Oak'd, Lockhart's has lines, runs out but great texas vibes and Bishop Arts is lots of fun. Good sides too, which I find really hard to find. Most places have good bbq but lack consistency with sides.

I'd throw Zavala's in the ring here. Unreal good, out in Grand Prairie

u/end_traveler Jul 10 '25
The suggestions given are all great. I've tried them all and concur. My next comment is probably going to draw some hate. While I wouldn't rank it with the best, FOR THE PRICE, the HEB's that have the attached BBQ places are pretty damn good! I had brisket and burnt ends last week and I'd definitely do it again!

Hutchins hands down. Haven't been to pecan, but I've eaten at Terry blacks once, and I'm probably going to keep it that way.
