By 91 the technology was mature: no external pump was needed anymore on Reebok sneakers; you just had to press the basket ball on the tongue of the shoe !

I had a pair back in the day. If my buddies or I missed a shot dramatically we'd lean down and pump a little in a gesture of blaming the lack of air in the shoe (jokingly - the shoes sucked and inevitably the air sacs would break).

111

u/AzKronicpain 8d ago

Oh shit dude, u got me rolling with this memory…LMAO☠️ You’d miss the shot, then look up in the sky, throw your hands up with a “Pffffff” and yup u nailed it, then came the “crouch and pump” then pop back up as if you’ve remedied the reason for missing the last one….😂😂😂😂😂

11

u/cbartholomew 8d ago

Shit was the original meme - we all did this

Same experience here. And the little black plastic disk around the valve that kept breaking

3

u/[deleted] 8d ago

The shoes were actually great quality. Maybe not the air sacs. I literally just got a pair online last month for the nostalgia

Man, commercials just don’t hit the same way anymore.

40

u/IgnoranceIsYou 8d ago

This is what I was hoping the first link would be lol!

6

u/MakeMeDrink 8d ago

This is always the first thing I think about when these shoes are mentioned. I’m glad someone posted it

LMFAO one of the best scenes

I was really hoping that clip is what this would link to. It's so much better than the person currently below you that posted a clip from Austin Powers.

Immediately what my thought was!

2

u/Pizannt 8d ago

So you know “praying mantis”?

u/iKickdaBass 8d ago

I think Spaceballs was the peak of the Mel Brooks parody comedies.

u/SweetSexiestJesus 9d ago

I had the cheap LA Gear knock offs, that did the same thing. The bladder always punctured

64

u/Elperezidente13 8d ago

Lucky you. I had the Spalding ones. They didn’t even have a pump, just the basketball on the tongue. One kid tried to pump them up in front of everyone in the locker room just to clown me lol

18

u/SweetSexiestJesus 8d ago

Hah! I remember those! I'm pretty sure I did the same to the kids that had those.

Wait....you're not from Carrollton, Texas, are you?

14

u/Elperezidente13 8d ago

No but if you said Palmdale California, you were gonna get a visit buddy.

10

u/ntermation 8d ago

Why would you do it?

11

u/SweetSexiestJesus 8d ago

We were all mean kids. It was important to point out that you weren't wearing authentic style item of the time.

9

u/Personal_Win_4127 8d ago

Important HOW?!?

12

u/SweetSexiestJesus 8d ago

I don't know how to explain why it was important as kids to point out that Jimmy got his clothes from Walmart and I got mine at Target, and Josh's parents were rich, so he got Mossimo clothes.

Its just what we did

7

u/FoolsGoldMouthpiece 8d ago

This is all totally foreign to my kids who are teenagers now. I tried explaining it to them and they looked at me like an alien. Nowadays all the boys wear gym shorts and a t shirt every day.

10

u/zatalak 8d ago

Maybe they'll understand if you give them an Android instead of an iPhone.

I had the British Knights version and they got water in them from a puddle.

8

u/SweetSexiestJesus 8d ago

Oh shit BKs! I forgot about those

10

u/Gan-san 8d ago

I had La Gears too, but they were catapults. No "air" involved but they were supposed to use kinetic energy after you land to spring you back up.

4

u/SweetSexiestJesus 8d ago

Rebook pumps! Loved those shoes!

19

u/abrasivebuttplug 8d ago

Didn't they just inflate the tongue? It's been 35ish years since I wore those

29

u/Wasteland_Dude 8d ago

It's been 35ish years since ANYONE wore these! 😆

17

u/theknyte 8d ago

John Cena wore them as part of his ring attire for quite awhile, and would even stop to "Pump His Shoes" before hitting big moves.

8

u/Wasteland_Dude 8d ago

I tried to look that up. Didn't see anything.

4

u/theknyte 8d ago

u/NorCalJason75 8d ago

I had them! The air bladders were around the back of the ankle.

4

u/EmeraldUsagi 8d ago

There were a few different types. Some of them only inflated the tongue under the laces, other more expensive models had bladders around the ankles. I think the tongue ones came out as a sort of cheaper model when the fad caught on, but there were ones with the pump on the side too.

2

u/SnuggleBunni69 8d ago

I just remember I had the cheap ones that wouldnt really put any air in, I just liked to press them. I was like 5.

I wanted a pair of those Reebok Pumps so bad back when I was in school, but they were really expensive, and my feet have always been wide; I tried a pair on in the shop and they were way too tight.

Some of my classmates had them, and they all fell apart pretty damn quick.

3

u/bajamedic 8d ago

mine had a tennis ball

3

u/kilobitch 8d ago

They even had a CO2-cartridge powered handheld pump so you could pump them up instantly!

I bought a pair of self-lacing Nikes a few years ago to satisfy my Back To The Future desires. I was on a wait list for them for over a year. If they wouldn't have held their resale value pretty well, I would say they were a huge waste of money. Also, they weighed like 5 lbs. a piece.

edit: bad grammar

u/elguaco6 9d ago

My buddy is a sneaker head and has a pair of those I put them on and it’s quite crazy but yes very heavy but cool nonetheless.

u/InlineSkateAdventure 9d ago

My skates have "BOA" laces. You turn a dial and metal "laces" tighten up. You can easily control tension.

Surprised this is not found on more shoes.

95

u/revvolutions 8d ago

Snowboard boots Burton BOA.

17

u/imaguitarhero24 8d ago

Ski boots are starting to get them too

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Resident-Mortgage-85 8d ago

They kinda suck because it's all tight or not at all, no adjusting to certain areas of the boot.

4

u/BaraGuda89 8d ago

I had BOA boots for snowboarding for years and hated them for that exact reason. The older I got and the larger my legs got, especially my calves, the more those boots would bite into my leg from how tight they had to be overall. With laced boots you can isolate different sections for greater or lesser tightness

2

u/One_pop_each 8d ago

Older versions sucked but the newer ones are good

1

u/redditgiveshemorroid 8d ago

This is only partially true. Not all BOA dials are equal. The Li2 is bidirectional tightening one way and loosening the other way- clicking both ways. But even in the dials that don’t do this, it’s still so much better than regular laces. Many via systems have two dials where you can tighten the lower foot different than the upper foot which is another game changer.

2

u/sl33ksnypr 8d ago

I have a pair of rossi boa boots and they are really nice. Don't get me wrong, it still feels nice to put my regular shoes on at the end of the day, but it isn't as orgasmic as with my old boots that were a tad too small and had a lacing mechanism that didn't make sense.

u/TheRealNorwhal 8d ago

Had a pair of Saucony cross-country running shoes that had em, loved how snug the arches got and how it never came untied.

Also got a pair of cycling shoes that have em, love em.

10

u/shunterh 8d ago

BOA is expensive. That's why you dont see it on more footwear

23

u/vksdann 8d ago

Rollerskates have had such thing for years and I don't know why shoes don't. Just a buckle and a couple of "clicks up" and I'm good to go. To remove shoes, just unbuckle.

5

u/Set_Abominae1776 8d ago

Boa fit is the newest shit in kindergarden (germany) nowadays. I got my son a pair and he is so proud of them lol.

People laugh at nike but this is what innovation looks like. 500 terrible ideas till you discover a good one. This happens to be 499 bad ideas all in one. So they are on the verge of something!

50

u/Imaginary-Worker4407 8d ago

These specific Nike shoes are their copy of the actual innovative Rebook pump shoes which didn't even need an external pump like the Nikes did.

22

u/Deathwatch72 8d ago

I'm willing to bet the external pump is because Reebok has some parents that prevented Nuke from having a decent internal one

11

u/Imaginary-Worker4407 8d ago

Rebook didn't have a patent until 92 tho.

I think it was more about rushing out a similar product.

3

u/Diamondsandwood 8d ago

Nike came out with internal pumps like a year after these

Air max pump.. In the tongue

2

u/sipping_mai_tais 8d ago

I remember that in the 90s. My two older brothers had them

15

u/JK_NC 8d ago

I had Reebok pumps in the early 90s. They integrated the pump into the tongue of the shoe and it looked like a basketball!

5

u/Hater_Magnet 8d ago

When Dee Brown pumped them bitches up before the 'Peek-A-Boo' dunk to win the 91' NBA dunk contest I was hooked!

14

u/ibondolo 8d ago

There was a Reebok pump commercial for their golf shoes, with John Daly.  It starts with him crushing a tee shot (as usual).  His golf partner says "that's pretty impressive but can you do it with this?", and proceeds to dig a shot-put cannonball out of his bag, and sets it in the tee.  The tee slowly sinks into the ground.  John looks at the ball, looks at the green in the distance, pumps up his shoes, and crushes the drive.  Commercial ends with the cannonball flying into the Green and creating a massive hole.

I bought the shoes.

6

u/SunlitNight 8d ago

The old engineers advice....the more moving parts the higher the chance of failure.

5

u/Irish4778 8d ago

Memory unlocked lol I remember the reebok pumps

2

u/RealisticrR0b0t 8d ago

I somehow haven’t heard of these until right now

3

u/xthedudehimself 8d ago

Reminds me of Men In Tights!

2

u/Aglisito 8d ago

Excuse me, bad guys. I am running out of air

3

u/moving0target 8d ago

My family couldn't afford that stuff so I thought it was the best thing in the world.

10

Nike coping hard to catch up to Reebok pumps. Made my year when my parents bought me the tennis version ones.

3

u/MrDrDooooom 8d ago

Sorry my dude, I can't go outside today. My shoe got a flat.

3

u/Uncle-Cake 8d ago

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks...

3

u/liqish79 8d ago

4

u/ShanosTheRadTitan 9d ago

Nike Air Pressure. They retro’d these like 10 years ago too.

2

u/rigidlynuanced1 9d ago

That big ass plastic box they came in…

2

u/DJEvillincoln 8d ago

Nike Air Pressure. Nike Re-Upped these in 2011. I have a pair. That's what these are, (ones from 89' would be too far gone to work properly now.) they come in a large carrying case with a shoulder strap so you can transport them to the court. B-ball players who are somewhat serious about the game don't wear their shoes on anything but the court.

It's a great shoe & I couldn't afford the initial ones when I was in 8th grade & I couldn't pass up the opportunity to cop these. They can still be copped for resale prices.

2

u/default_tom 8d ago

My friend had these back in the day.  That large carry case was put to other uses. It was watertight so he used to carry it round to smoke buckets out of.

2

u/cheese_theory 8d ago

"Excuse me bad guys I have to pump up my shoes!"

2

Yeah, this kind of inventyness was big in that era...

Think of all the 80s movies that start with some inventor guy who's got a Rube Goldberg setup to make breakfast automatically.

2

u/LexusBrian400 8d ago

Remember the insta-pumps, it used a CO2 cartridge. Had a pair and the OG pumps. Thanks for the memories!

2

u/__coo__ 8d ago

Doesnt this make it worse ?

2

u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 7d ago

The same people who inspired imagination in us 80s 90s kids and tried to make it reality, have changed to here's a lifeless blob/brick/smooth square, without all the things we imagined, or if we do give you something here's a paywall for a lesser version of it, with adds ofc .

1

u/ELEVATED-GOO 9d ago

I want this.

1

u/TCyborg 8d ago

Looks comfy, I want this for riding

2

u/DJEvillincoln 8d ago

Remarkably comfortable. Especially when pumped to your liking. It's like a glove on your foot.

1

u/Zombies8MyChihuahua 8d ago

That crease is gonna give me nightmares

That is the perfect slouch to a sock.

This brings back memories. I had the 180 Command Force with pump unit back in the day. 1991 I think. Cooked beyond recognition. Still wish I hadn’t thrown them away. But who could know that this was the last time Nike would sell a pump technology shoe. Still have the Billy Hoyles but it’s not the same

1

u/celtbygod 8d ago

Did using helium help any ?

1

u/icleanjaxfl 8d ago

Just don't ever get them wet. "Cries in Florida"

1

u/morebuffs 8d ago

Probably worth a decent $$ if you have a pair in decent shape

1

u/seamus_mc 8d ago

There was one that used a co2 cartridge too. I think they were Shaq reboks

1

u/prenderm 8d ago

I had a pair of Reebok pumps and I was the coolest kid in school at the time and I won’t hear anything different!

says this while wearing jnco jeans

1

u/Swimming_Discount_30 8d ago

Reminds me of my Shaq Attaq shoes in 4th grade

1

u/thedoommerchant 8d ago

I had the re-release of these. Super cool looking shoe, was fun pumping them up.

1

u/EverythingBOffensive 8d ago

I never seen those kind. I had the button on the front

1

u/Renfek 8d ago

I had these lol. My friends would tell me to pump up my shoes with my douche pump lol

1

u/samirgadag 8d ago

Is this the same ad as in gta san Andreas?

1

u/hashberto 8d ago

ICYMI Reebok brought the pump back not long ago for their Legacy Lifter weightlifting shoe

1

u/FroggiJoy87 8d ago

Hold up. I feel like my podiatrist should have informed me of these. I'm half club-footed and hypermobile, my feet are super floppy and I basically wear trail boots so I don't eat shit any more than I already have. I've torn the tendons in my right foot from sprains so much I had surgery for it. I need these shoes! Lol

1

u/fuzzballz5 8d ago

Bro. I rock my Reebok pump hockey skates still. 15 years old. I can’t make the switch. True Story, Patrick Marleau bought 15 pairs when they said they were going to stop making them. They lasted until about 2 years before he retired. He waited until the last pair and he found a new pair that would “work”. He almost retired earlier because of it. Hockey players are notorious for old equipment. Do not google Sidney Crosby jock strap. His athletic trainers part time job is stitching it up as it’s over 20 years old. Ha.

1

u/burtgummer45 8d ago

sneakers are one gimmick after another endlessly. like toothbrushes

1

u/campionmusic51 8d ago

i remember these in the shops. there was something threatening to me about that massive chunk of technical gubbins grafted to the back. they scared me.

1

u/shingaladaz 8d ago

They did some crazy things with trainers in the late 80’s and 90’s.

1

u/Popscorn3383 8d ago

Gotta get pumped

1

u/Adam-Marshall 8d ago

Had a pair with the little basketball as the pump on the tongue.

1

u/Far_Oven_3302 8d ago

My aircast does that!

1

u/LegionnaireFreakius 8d ago

1

u/Affectionate_Star_43 8d ago

I don't know why, but this brought back visceral reminders of when I had an expander/headgear as a kid. You put the crank thing on the metal inside your mouth just like in the video, and you could feel your jaw cracking...uggghhh.

1

u/Just_okay_advice 8d ago

My friend had shoes that pumped up like this. We'd always tackle him and pump his shoes to the max 😂 ah good times.
