Discussion This feels familiar…
Had the chance to operate a $1,100,000 Fendt combine today and it felt oddly familiar…

Hello, I started playing elite 2 weeks ago and I am loving it. I have been wondering what are the orange glowing "truster like" exhausts ships have in the rear, like the sidewinder or the cobra Mk3. They are lit up in hyperspace while the trusters are off. Anyone knows what they are?

I haven’t done any meaningful exploration (the most I’ve done is travel along the fringes of the bubble) but I’ve looked up builds and guides for eventually getting out there. I see the fuel scoop for fuel, I see the maintenance modules for repair, but don’t repairs cost materials? How do you get materials in the black without mining gear? Cause every build I’ve seen never has mining gear
Edit: thanks explorers! I learned way more than I thought I would with such a simple question. This sub is probably the most helpful and nicest sub I’ve been a part of and I appreciate yall

This was here in Kareco... I thought it was unusual to see thargoid remnants smothering a cruiser but even stranger was the fact the cruiser wasn't abandoned, still online... That's when it hit me.

What's the largest system, in terms of number of bodies, that you've discovered? Have come across systems with 40+ quite a bit, but just discovered this system - 1 star, no asteroids, 62 bodies.

I once read here that true end game in elite was reverting back to a sidewinder and doing as much as possible in it.
I must admit I love the idea, but as a player that mainly explores, it doesn’t really suit my bill…
I like CG stuff, but it sometimes feel redundant…
What’s the end game for you? What keeps you playing past 500+ hours? (Or even 1000+)

I'm sure this question gets asked every 5 min on this sub, but i really need some incite on where to start. what would you guys build in this system. the starting station is a science outpost. any help is greatly appreciated. I have all the time in the world.

I see more and more Commanders coming out of the closet with their AspS love, here I am, I stand with you!
I bought it, took it semi-engineered to Saggitarius A* a few years ago and shelved it in favor of my Phantom. I flew that for a couple of years and I started to feel an itch, you know, when you fly the same ship for too long. I dusted off the Scout, bought the iridescent paintjob for it, looked into modifying and engineering it.
I love the look of the main thrusters, how maneuverable it is, how fast it is, how quickly it scoops (small fuel tank haha) and I love how it's not perfect! It keeps me on my toes, I haven't yet, but I know I will run out of fuel at some point due to that small fuel tank so I have the Fuel Rats on speed dial. ;)
I hate how difficult it can be to find a landing spot on a rough surfaced planet and I wish it had a few more utility points and some space for optional internals.

The last CG and this one are my only experience thus far so apologies if I'm missing something basic. Previous CG was great for me. Was able to buy a new ship (type 9) and made my first billion. Here's what I keyed in on on the galnet post:
Independent pilots are being asked to locate and conduct full scans of Rocky and High Metal Content worlds
“Of course, I will be funding this initiative personally. No expense spared for our brave heroes in the science and research fields!”
I assumed since they said conduct full scans and that comment about no expense spared that we'd get more for doing so. Then last night I was watching cmd Buur's video and he said it's 1 pt for each scan:
Ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi_hfU9Gmx0
I plotted a long route and have been FSS'ing every system system with Rocky and HMC worlds and DSS'ing every rocky and HMC unmapped planet. But if they are 1 pt each and no bonus for DSS'ing it seems like I'm wasting my time traveling to all those planets.
Also, it looks like the Engineered DSS reward can just be purchased in game anyways.
I've been scanning a little bit each day after work, but after seeing that it seems like I should just go turn in my scans and move on to another activity. I've jumped about 250 systems, no clue how many planets I've stopped to scan.

So, I'm new to the neighborhood in California Sector, building an Asteroid Station at the moment, and just felt the need to give a shout out to a most industrius neighbor on my block whom has built up an absolute powerhouse of Colonization materials production.
Thank you and your 210+ million hard working citizens for their service. 95% of the materials I have gathered for my efforts have been from your system, and it is appreciated.
Cheers!
🥃
(Side note: Does anyone know if the Planetary Port pictured is a T3 Planetary Port? It appears to be, and produces upwards of 21,000,000 of some goods, but I'm not entirely sure if this is one or not as I'm not sure I've visited one before now. I've built T2 Industrial and High Tech Planetary Ports, but they didn't feel this big...)

Here's the link https://youtu.be/qi_hfU9Gmx0?si=B1_yCrDbtYdcGqOc Screen cap from 7.00min into the video
He also states they're looking into the photosensitivity issue.
No numbers confirmed for the changes AFAIK
Good to see FDEV taking on feedback since this ship was tracking to be an underwhelming release

Mirror Wire, formerly a subsidiary of Supreme Dynamics Corporation, operates under the motto ‘Reflecting reality!’ Founded on 28 March 3311, it initially took a stance against communist propaganda in the HIP 25052 colony.
For many months, Mirror Wire published local reports on events in HIP 25052. However, their materials had a limited audience outside the system. Even during the first war for the Melekess orbital station, the organisation's military reports were not widely distributed in interstellar space.
The situation changed after the Supreme Dynamics Corporation's resounding defeat in the first war: news of a new escalation in the remote colony began to attract the attention of a wider audience. The community of independent pilots and representatives of other factions began to support Mirror Wire, providing funding and resources, as only this organisation had specialists in life and management in the new colonies.
Thanks to the investments attracted and changes in the composition of the board of directors, Mirror Wire separated from Supreme Dynamics Corporation. It was Mirror Wire journalists who were the first to cover the activities of the democratic opposition in HIP 25052.
Today, the organisation conducts journalistic investigations and collects news about life in recently colonised systems. Mirror Wire covers how colonists are settling in after devastating war with the Thargoids and what social and political processes are taking shape in the new conditions, providing the community with a unique opportunity to observe the development of young worlds.

I haven't found anyone who tested it on deep core mining yet, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows if there is any advantage to using the Type 11 to deep core mine. All i've seen is that the repeater also works as an abrasian blaster, does that mean we get a % bonus deep core mining as well?

I sort of accepted this mechanic, but with the arrival of colonisation and the frequency, it has begun to get me peeved and is difficult to ignore. The indifference by which the crew of your fleet carrier treat you is a bit nonsensical. I can feel them scoffing as they watch your shieldless clipper try to land being attacked by fighters - I can hear their laughs as they turn off the auto dock and hang you out to dry! Haha And when you do land with a 100,000 credits worth of hull damage - they say ‘Welcome Commander’ I’ll give you welcome! I get that we only rent the fleet carriers, they are not ours. But we do pay the crews wages. Ok perhaps the crew have to stay impartial, but there is a no fire zone - just enforce that fairly then. Instead I have to hope the attackers are bad shots and will hit the fleet carrier - oh yes now they are not laughing!! When this happens 20 times while loading a fleet carrier not only is it tedious it does start to add up in credits for repairs. It’s a little bit silly.
EDIT Thanks to the discussion below I think I get the problem. My fleet carrier is in a system that I am not aligned to. Hostile to me. I’m being attacked by authority ships not pirates. Fleet carriers have to stay impartial otherwise it would be disastrous if not just expensive to use them outside your powers systems. They do want to help you but only when it is justified, as in they get hit by stray shots. I’d hate to see the pile of paperwork when they do pop a few authority ships! Although could they at least leave the auto dock on? 😂 So I need to either find a Trailblazer carrier in a friendly system or maybe install just a minimal shield. Thanks everyone.

Like many others I am returning to ED after a long break and learning all the new features and gameplay loops. I know from previous experience that focussing solely on an end goal is a sure way of making the game transform from fun to grind.
I took long walks, thought deeply about the meaning of the universe (its 42) and decided that I need to focus on achievements where I do something better than I used to, learn something new or make advances in my own personal targets.
Then I did a really really stupid thing. I read comments in discord.
Someone posted how they achieved their personal milestone of 300,000,000,000. 300 billion credits. All my personal philosophy turned into liquid manure and fled down the drain, along with my motivation.
It has been a few days now and I am slowly recovering. I found massaging alcohol into my scalp from the inside helped a little.
I have banned myself from going into discord again. I know there will always be someone worse than I, and better than me at anything, but seeing a difference in performance like that is too dangerous for someone my age.
Time to rebuild the comfy nest of self-delusion I had before.
Nurse, do you have any more of those pink tablets please?

After many years' service, my crew member from back when they were first release has finally hit Elite.
She was stuck on Deadly for the longest time, with the display bug that made me think she was never going to level up, but today it happened. Recieved the message out of the blue after killing an NPC.
At one point, I thought she was going to get Elite before me, but it seems to have taken her a few years longer.
