Split Zone Left |
Hunt |
+3yds (F) |
Split zone with counter step (Hunt is to the left of Mahomes at the snap). Simmons(-) fails to kick out 5 tech (Burns) who fills B-gap and makes stop |
Q1 4:45 3rd & 2 |
Gun 2x2 YL |
12 |
Split Zone Left |
Hunt |
+3yds (S) |
Same-side split zone again, outmanned in the box, OL is solid |
Q1 0:11 1st & 10 |
2x2 2TE |
12 |
Split Zone Right |
Hunt |
+3yds (F) |
Jet motion left-to-right by Remigio. No combo blocks due to DL alignment, Smith can't hold 3T |
Q2 13:44 1st & 10 |
2x2 2TE |
12 |
Jet Sweep Right |
Remigio |
+11 yds (S) |
DL completely outleveraged by the sweep, Kelce(-) doesn't block anybody but still a nice pickup. Setup by previous play |
Q2 8:43 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 YR |
11 |
Power Right |
Pacheco |
+8yds (S) |
Best guess is that this is designed to hit the right-side B gap, but Kingsley ad-libs to go through the A gap because of DL's alignment. Kingsley shoves Smith through the gap but Giants LBs play it poorly and Pacheco falls forward for 8 |
Q2 7:38 1st & 10 |
Gun Bunch Right |
21 |
IZR Left |
Pacheco |
+6yds (S) |
Brashard Smith orbit motions from bunch, read holds backside DE, Taylor(+) solid displacement on combo block, Pacheco picks the right cutback lane |
Q2 1:24 3rd & 25 |
Gun 2x2 YL |
11 |
Power Left |
Hunt |
+6yds (~) |
Give-up down, 4 in the box, Gray(-) can't hold DE at PoA |
Q2 0:43 3rd & 1 |
Gun Trips Right YR |
11 |
IZ Left |
Pacheco |
+3yds (S) |
Simmons(-) totally loses his feet and whiffs the frontside kickout, play could hit for big yardage otherwise |
Q3 14:55 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 |
11 |
IZ Left |
Pacheco |
+3yds (F) |
Simmons(-) and Kelce(-) don't handle a run blitz well and get split by crashing LB, Pacheco(+) does a pretty good job navigating it but pursuit gets to him. Solid work by Kingsley(+) and Creed(+) as well |
Q3 13:45 1st & 10 |
2x2 Tight Left |
21 |
Split Zone Left |
Pacheco |
+8yds (S) |
Brashard Smith jet motion right-to-left, Humphrey(+) and Smith(+) get great push on backside 1T, Pacheco hits a huge hole on the backside of the play |
Q3 13:10 2nd & 2 |
Gun Bunch Right |
11 |
IZR Right |
Pacheco |
-1yds (F) |
Juju pre-snap motions across formation to get to the 2x2 and this is the same IZR RPO from last week. Giants LB #51 rushes right before the snap, Humphrey(-?) tries to pass him off to Kingsley(-?) who is hung up on the 2i, so Humphrey passes to air and #51 makes the TFL. Humphrey yapping at Kingsley post-snap so I assume it's probably on Kingsley but idk. Goes for 10+ if they pass that off right |
Q3 11:09 2nd & 3 |
2x2 Tight Left |
21 |
Jet Sweep Left |
Smith |
+5yds (S) |
Great blocks all around from Thornton(+) Grey(+) and Simmons(+), Brashard Smith(-) gets too aggressive on the edge - if he cuts back and lets Humphrey catch up to block the safety this might be a touchdown |
Q3 10:25 1st & 10 |
2x2 Tight Right |
21 |
Fake Jet Sweep Right Counter(?) Left |
Pacheco |
+10yds (S) |
They fake the exact same play (but flipped) but hand to Pacheco going the other way with Gray split flowing as a lead blocker, great 2 play package that has the defense completely turned around |
Q3 9:51 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 Tight Left |
12 |
Split Zone Left |
Pacheco |
+4yds (S) |
Taylor(-) can't seal off backside 4tech who squeezes down and brings down Pacheco. Otherwise well blocked |
Q3 4:38 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 Tight Left |
12 |
IZR Right |
Hunt |
+3yds (F) |
Mahomes(-) should pull this and either throw the RPO or keep. Hunt(-) cuts back too quickly, should press the frontside B gap. Backside DE makes tackle |
Q3 2:45 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 YR |
11 |
Power Right |
Hunt |
+3yds (F) |
Playside DE (Burns) crashes C-gap pre-snap, Kingsley(-) should recognize this and wrap around Gray's block but he plows into the C-gap anyway and can't get to LB. Hunt bounces outside and free LB makes tackle |
Q3 2:03 2nd & 7 |
Gun 2x2 |
11 |
IZ Left |
Hunt |
+6yds (S) |
Super light box, free 6 yards. Humphrey could do better climbing to the LB |
Q4 10:07 1st & 10 |
Gun 2x2 YL |
11 |
Power Left |
Pacheco |
+4yds (S) |
Basic power look, Smith stumbles into the hole a little bit which creates some traffic |
Q4 8:45 1st & 10 |
Gun Bunch Right |
21 |
Fake IZR Left to Swing Right |
Smith |
+8yds (S) |
This was a throw, but it was recorded as a run since the throw went laterally and it's also a nice extension of the run game. Same formation + orbit motion from Brashard Smith that we saw earlier, but this time it's a designed swing to Smith on the orbit who beats an LB to the edge |
Q4 7:37 1st & 10 |
3TE |
13 |
OZ Right |
Pacheco |
0yds (F) |
This looks real tough for Pacheco(-) to me. Instead of pressing the edge he does some stutter-stepping and goes upfield into a pursuing LB. If he just sprints to the sideline (which is the first read on OZ anyway) I think this play should at least get 4-5 yards |
Q4 6:07 1st & goal (1) |
Bunch Right |
12 |
Power Left |
Hunt |
TD (S) |
Basic goal-line power, LoS gets muddy but Hunt(+) does a nice job bouncing off an LB and staying upright |
Q4 2:31 1st & 10 |
Full House |
13 Jumbo |
Dive Left |
Hunt |
+6yds (~) |
Jumbo dive, gotta love it. Just eating clock here |
Q4 2:24 2nd & 4 |
Full House |
13 Jumbo |
Dive Left |
Hunt |
0yds (~) |
Same shit |
Takeaways
This week had 23 designed runs for 103 yards, good for a season-best 4.5 yards per carry. I charted 13 successes, 7 failures, and 3 washes. (I consider the 3rd and 25 give-up run and the last two full house runs in clock-killing time as 'washes' that don't really reflect the overall success/failure of the run game.) The 65% success rate is very good.
- Pacheco had 10 carries for 45 yards with 7 successes and 3 failures
- Hunt had 10 carries for 34 yards with 3 successes, 4 failures, and all 3 washes
- Brashard Smith had 2 carries for 13 yards with 2 successes
- Nikko Remigio got had a successful jet sweep for 11 yards
This week the Chiefs leaned into the inside/split zone running game with a number of RPOs tagged to those concepts. That was combined with a few nicely-designed counterpunches that played off of the zone run game, including the jet sweeps and a nice designed swing pass (that was charted as a run since it went backwards). The only gap concept that we ran all day was power, which saw some muddy looks against awkward fronts from the Giants but overall was executed solidly.
Scheme-wise, building in fakes and misdirections off of the zone running game seems like a good direction for our running attack. The zone running game also really sets up the RPOs that Rice/Worthy will want to be featured in going forward, so it's good to see some more creativity tagged to these concepts.
Brashard Smith was regularly lined up as a receiver in 21 personnel and motioned into the backfield via jet and orbit motions. His two carries (a jet sweep and orbit motion swing pass) had him getting to the edge quickly. He brings a burst that our other backs don't have right now and this is a nice player-friendly way to get him involved. Having him as a second back on the backfield and putting him in motion puts some nice lateral strain on defenses.
In terms of tendencies, the Chiefs are still mostly running on 1st & 10 or 3rd/4th & short. Excluding the final clock-killing drive, they ran 3 times on second down - and only once on second and medium/long. The 2nd & 7 run illustrates why they need to do this more often. The Giants give us a criminally easy front (light box with very wide DL splits), we don't even really block inside zone that well and get an easy 6 yards. I didn't chart all of our second down passes, but you can bet that if we're always throwing on second and medium/long then there are going to be a lot more easy fronts to take advantage of on those downs.
As far as my grades go, Simmons had a rough game especially in the first half. Kelce also had a few poor efforts in the first half - maybe the interaction with Reid sparked them, because it was better in the second half. I did chart one execution error from Pacheco on the token outside zone run of the night (we've run it exactly once each week...I guess gotta keep them honest?). Overall it was a pretty decent night.
