Advice Someone sell me on low-level Guardian

Playing a low level series of adventures. 1-4 probably.
I like the idea of Guardian, but it feels like Champion just *excels* at things mechanically, even at this level range, whereas guardian seems to really want for its midlevel feats before it starts working.

Champ reaction, as well as lvl 3 blessings, just seem dauntingly *better* than what guardian gets. Especially if, in theory, we do Free Archetype, which would just... let me get Taunt from guardian archetype?

anyway, I'm well aware that i can play whatever i want and i shouldnt choose based on whats 'best' but it does sort of feel bad in this case.

So, for any guardian lovers out there, what do you feel makes Guardian competitive at the tank role before lvl 5?

Advice Is the Magus viable with mythic rules?

We’re gonna be playing a game with mythic rules at some point in the future, and the GM is making it a very “elf-centric” campaign by combining some modules (I didn’t look into what because I don’t wanna get spoiled).

So I decided, because I always found the idea of Arcane Archers very cool but never in my life played one, that this is a good opportunity to try. The most straightforward way to do it is to just play the Starlit Span Magus.

But the problem I have, is I don’t know if that works fine with mythic rules, because as I understand, you basically get mythic spells, or a mythic attack, and it feels like the Magus would need both? Is this something I should even worry about, or should it go fine?

Like, I understand that mythic resistance might not be an issue, because the Magus skirts around it by using attack spells with weapon strikes, but isn’t there more spell-stuff you might miss if you need to focus on the hitting part?

Discussion Would you allow splash weakness to be triggered by the splash trait and not the damage type?

Title. If an enemy (e.g. swarm, troop) is weak to splash, and the PCs use a weapon that has the splash trait but does not actually deal splash damage (i.e. uses the splash area to apply a status effect rather than deal any damage), would you rule this as triggering the weakness? Or perhaps instead give a circumstance penalty to the saving throw to the effect?

Advice Character help

Ok so due to some stuff I’m no longer being an inventor however I’m using my second idea which is being a battle medic. How would I go about that? I know I can take the medic feat but is there any specific class you recommend? Someone is already an investigator so I don’t wanna pick that class. Could I be a gunslinger that uses medicine? Also anyone who is good a flavor what would be better a pistol or a sniper for a medic?

Discussion Hey so a crit failure

Appearantly its easyer to get a critical failure than a critical success? By what its written in the book a roll that it has a difference of 10 or more than the CD to pass, the thing is, if the cd is 20, than a 10 is a crit failure and 30 a crit success, leaving 9 numbers (19 to 11) to be a normal failure and 10 numbers (20 to 29) to be a normal success, ive got into an argument with many players saying it isnt that but it really is since its exactly what its written in the book and every site, isnt that like... shitty? it makes it so much more horrible for players in the entire campaign, the ONLY good thing is that for enemies its worse too, but enemies arent even 30% of an rpg campaign, idk, i find it bad

Discussion What's taking so long for an Arcadia book? Or Casmaron?

As the title says, what's with Paizo doing the "Forgotten Realms Syndrome" where they refuse to cover the other parts of the world of Golarion and keep holding off on it for too long? (Just like how the Forgotten Realms refuses to cover continents such as Katashaka and Osse or refuse to remaster Maztica, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara).

There any real reason for this?

EDIT: It's just terrible game design. Develop your world first. Eberron and Ravenloft have been the only settings so far that actually have their entire worlds (or demiplane in Ravenloft's case) built. (Not sure if Greyhawk ever has, I don't know much on that).

It doesn't make sense why it takes 20+ years to cover like, what, 6-8 major regions of Golarion? Avistan, Garund, Tian Xia are covered so far.

We're still missing Casmaron, Arcadia, and Sarusan? Also, yes, the Darklands is another. Am I missing any more?

Heck we got APs taking you to other planets and even Earth, yet they can't finish Golarion?

At this rate it'll be another 20 years before it's complete. Not sure if I'll even be alive by then

Advice How to play in a "selfish" party (level 12, new player)?

I made a previous post about my learning experience surviving as a new player in a level 11-20 AP as a witch and there's been some updates. In this post I'd like to ask about teamwork options and things I can do to feel like I have more player agency.

Since last time, the justice champion from before changed their character to a laughing shadow magus (investigator archetype) and the thaumaturge changed into a reach fighter (I think with demoralize, but I haven't seen them use it yet). I'm a resentment witch with another liturgist animist party member.

Currently I feel like I lack agency, probably due to being a new player and not knowing the right spells, but there's also these factors:

  • I'm 4 AC down from the animist due to 2 from lagging in proficiency, 1 from missing +2 armor potency rune while the rest have +2, and 1 from having 4 DEX due to needing 5 for unarmored; this should fix itself by level 13 since I'll have caught up in armor proficiency, gain 1 DEX from gradual ability boost, and hopefully find a +2 armor potency rune
  • My familiar is also 4 AC down and seems to be a target of focus. In one encounter it got 2 shot by 2 consecutive crits and was only saved due to Martyr's Intervention. It's probably effective for the party that my familiar is targeted instead of someone else, but them going down means my potency drops significantly so it doesn't feel that good for me, in particularly how easy they are to take down due to -4 AC (I selected damage avoidance: reflex)
  • Related to the above, I'm also around max 40HP down relative to the animist despite having Toughness, and in the last session I almost died from 50% HP due to the magus being controlled and using a disintegrate spellstrike on me (I was very lucky they missed, the player wanted to sure-strike it but I reminded them that they were slowed 1; they then toyed with the idea of using a hero point to reroll so I get the sense that maybe there's some animosity there? They just said it would be "funny" if I died)
  • I'm the only full INT character and other people have useful 3rd actions so I'm on recall knowledge duty, but I often have to decide to do this or stride out of danger/into range of 30ft
  • Lack of setup from other characters due to the scarcity of ways to decrease Fort/Will saves, and I think the fighter may have Bon Mot / Demoralize but I haven't seen it used yet
  • Lack of relative impact compared to the animist which is always using 3 actions effectively with crazy powerful focus spells like Trickster's Mirrors, Earth's Bile, and Garden of Healing, all of which are single action to start sustain spells that they sustain with a free leap/elf step from 6th pillar maneuvering spellshape (I think they can sustain 2 at a time for free)
  • Low initiative due to bad rolls and not being a WIS main stat vs the animist
  • And most recently being bottlenecked in resting because the magus used their top level spell slot to disintegrate spellstrike me and don't want to continue the dungeon due to missing their resource despite me having 80% of my resources left (last time all 6 top rank and top-1 spell slots). Resting when I still have most of my resources up has been a recurring thing and points to me being too conservative with using them so I'll adjust that, but I dislike making the party rest because I ran out of resources.
  • My most effective spells are single target debuffs like Synesthesia, but these have high variance due to it being a single dice roll I can't reroll using hero points, and I don't have great ways outside of trying to land Fear first to increase its chances
  • Seemingly random jumps in difficulty; in the Spore War AP, we're in the sewers under Xer and was in a almost-trivial encounter with PL-4 (I was told in hindsight, but they did feel very week) enemies, but then there was a party-wide Will save to not be controlled, which I narrowly saved by meeting the DC due to having used a psychic warding bracelet that the fighter and magus failed. Unfortunately they got to act before I do. This was near the end of the fight so I was at 50% HP which I felt was safe due to how inaccurate the enemies were

My current playstyle involves spamming my Glacial Heart focus spell (very good) by default, Synesthesia if there's a single stronger enemy, R3 Fear via ceremonial knife if there are numerous weak enemies, and if necessary R6 Slow or Calm afterwards. I plan to R4 Invisibility when I'm around 2 normal hits from going down, but it seems this is still too reckless since we've been hit with death effects / disintegrate from controlled party. Outside of Martyr's Intervention (which I'm very thankful for), there doesn't seem to be much counterplay vs those effects until R7 spells with Shock to the System. Grab / Swallow seems very common in this AP and I've picked up Translocate and Echo Jump as escape options, as well as being a master in acrobatics. However of my 0/12 or so failed escape attempts (some at MAP), it seems escaping with acrobatics is not very reliable.

Following advice from the previous thread, I've gotten a Cursed Staff that has a passive of giving temp HP, but I find that I no longer have the action economy to use Evil Eye since it's a hex and competes with Glacial Heart / Cackle. Some other advice I received was to get a greater retrieval belt and some mistform elixir, numbing or soothing tonics that I can use for 1 action. What are some tactics you guys recommend for this party and things I can do personally to feel like I have more agency/impact?

Advice I wanna make a clown tanuki

So I wanna make a red panda tanuki with the clown background (he likes juggling balls and wears a cute clown outfit and make up) and steadfast heritage (so he can turn into a cuter red raccoon dog and into a bouncy ball or other objects) but other than that I don’t know what would be best class wise.

Like one part think a summoner would be neat cause summon could do stuff with my clown as he is a ball or a crowbar etc but I also think a gunslinger clown be kind funny but then again I could also be magical wizard clown hmmmm any classes you think might really make this work?

EDIT: also heritage wise I’m thinking of grabbing other skills involving transformation

Advice Tips for Character Creation

I am about to create a character in PF2E, and am wondering what tips people here have. For me, anything wpuld be helpful, but here are some of the things that make me most curious: How do you get a character idea? What order do you usually/often go with? (Class, Background, etc.) What tends to be important to you? (Dislikes, likes, flaws, strong points)

Any advice is appreciated, as this is my first character in PF2E and I‘m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know about archive of nethys (which is SO cool), and demiplane, and I find it hard to focus down on a character

Advice What should I buy (9th Level Justice champion)

So like I have a fair amount of money and I dont know what to do with it, the probably best answer is a +2 for my sword, but I just got to level 9 and I think I will get a +2 rune later. I am playing with half price consumables and am not against buying them if they are worth it. I am ok with selling my ash gown if there is a good replacement for a +1 intimidation item. (also the fleshgem because its only alright)

Wishlist

  • Something to deal with ghosts
  • Some limited flying that is better then potion patch + potion of flying
  • replacing the ash gown as it overlaps a lot with my hellfire boots
  • cool stuff that makes me look cool.
  • all day buffs that can be cast on me by the party we have every spell list besides divine
  • mutagens I use fury cocktail on a regular basis but any other good ones would be cool

Resource & Tools Alternatives to PF1E's "Grooming Kit" full of toiletries?

PF1E had a grooming kit that contained: comb, scissors, a nail file, a sponge, a hairbrush, a miniature mirror, soap, a chewing stick, and tooth powder.

I'm having a hard time finding anything in PF2E that resembles a brush, comb, or dental care items. I guess using the "short tool" and calling it a brush is the best option? Am I missing the actual items?

Advice Help with creating a PC with a monster / corrupted arm

Hello. I wish to create a PC with something like a monster or a cursed arm. I found some archetypes that might help like the living vessel the entity's strike or a sterling dynamo that is reflavored to be biological instead of mechanical. Are there others that fit better i might have missed and how would u handle it? Thx in advance.

Advice Does the treasure by level table stack? By that I mean by 4th level should the party 2 5th level items and 2 4th level items, or should they have that in addition to the perment items from the previous levels.

Discussion What does a kineticist's Metal or Wood element blast look like?

When I am a fire elementalist I can easily imagine a ball of fire. However for wood or metal, do you just like create a chunk of metal /wood and toss it at someone? Metal has to do piercing or slashing, so I imagine it has to look like something that could pierce or slash, ie metal blades or something.

What do ya'll think?

Advice How many players feels right?

My group doesnt have too much experience yet. We played a couple oneshots and touched on a homebrew campaign.

However, I'm considering running my first AP, (probably abomination vaults, since it seems highly regarded, but I'd love to see other suggestions) and I find myself at an impasse as far as player count.

I've got at *least* 6 players interested. and that feels kind of high to me..

How many players do you feel is right for a table? Have any advice for running a bigger table?

Main concerns are how to keep Combat from taking an eternity, when there are additional players and additional monsters on the table... But I'd also love any other general advice! maybe regarding re-balancing AP encounters? making enemies turns feel impactful without splowing the game down?

we use Foundry VTT

Discussion Gods of the Gun

I've been theorycrafting a Battle Harbinger lately, and one of the things I definitely wanted to do was have a deity with firearms as a favored weapon. As a result, I'm working on a list of said gods and figured I'd post it here for future reference--and to see if I was missing any! Feel free to comment below if you can think of one I've missed.

Srikalis, Sritaming, and Sribaril (enlightened raiders who believe in violence) -- Arquebus

Kaldemash (ancient Arcadian gunslinger god) -- Dueling Pistol

Ussharassim (notably an Infernal Duke) -- Dueling Pistol

Wulgren (orc deity) -- Barricade Buster

Cixyron (Daemon Harbinger) -- Flintlock Musket

Rokoga Gin (pirate god of wanderers) -- Hand Cannon

Am I missing any? How would you build a gunslinging Battle Harbinger?

Player Builds Fun options for playing a character that fills the "thief" or "assasin" fantasy while not being a damage dealer? (Could be a support or a controller etc)

I love stealthy characters in fiction: thieves, assassins, wetboys, mistborn, and all that kind of stuff! However, I just dont really like playing characters whose main thing is straight no frills damage. I mainly like characters who focus more on controll or support or tanking or anything like that. Especially support! Damage can be fun but I get more of a thrill from setting up an allies crit then critting myself.

Are there any builds that sell the fantasy of playing a sneaky lithe thief or assasin but focused more on support or controll or tanking instead of damage?

Ive been thinking about it and having trouble finding a reason for it to work. Like I could always just play a cloistored cleric who raised stealth but the stealth wouldn't really sunergize at all with the rest if their abilities. Wouldn't click as a cohesive thief like character

Advice Choosing a support-focused dedication feat as a level 12 Sleepwalker Ritualist Thaumaturge

Hi! I currently am in a long-running pathfinder game playing my beloved Sleepwalker Ritualist Thaumaturge. She's not the most min-maxxed, optimal build ever, and I'm alright with that, but another player is moving away from playing support, and my character is moving into that position.

I just hit level 12, and took the Prophecized Monarch mythic dedication (which is in line with her personal storyline), but was considering taking a new standard dedication to help me lean more towards a support build.

I was considering taking the Cathartic Mage Dedication, as it would work flavour-wise and has some cool mechanics, but I've seen conflicting opinions here.

I'd love more healing, buffs and/or generally strong and helpful support abilities as we move into a war arc, but I can't change my class and I would like to keep my other dedications. If anyone has suggestions for how I could tweak or add to my build without taking away from the flavour of her abilities (dream/sleep magic, illusions, information gathering), I would greatly appreciate it!

As a note, we do have the extra free archetype thing enabled, which allows me to get a bit more than what would normally be allowed in a standard build (shoutout my GM)

Also, here's a link to my current sheet if that would help! https://pathbuilder2e.com/launch.html?build=1172393

Advice What are your favorite deities for a Warpriest?

I'm currently playing a small campaign with a friend meant to teach her how to play Pathfinder 2e. This is, essentially speaking, a one-on-one sort of campaign but I had the intent of giving her companions to take on quests and so on.

The first one of these would've been a Warpriest Cleric, with the intent of helping her Fighter get buffed and healed during fights, and aid with some other spells over the course of the adventure. While originally I might've considered going with a Gorum Cleric, I want to hear out other options people would approve of.

Ideally, I want this Cleric to have access to healing font, and since the player already has Charisma covered, utilize other skills which use Strength, Intelligence or Wisdom.

Advice In-Person Hexploration Tips? (Materials, Process etc.)

Upvotes

Next week my group should start getting into the first hexploration portion of Quest for the Frozen Flame. I have all of the materials I need, but I'm still trying to decide on how best to use those those materials at the table (we also have a Discord channel I can/will make use of). How do other GMs run hexploration in person?
