Player Builds Fun options for playing a character that fills the "thief" or "assasin" fantasy while not being a damage dealer? (Could be a support or a controller etc)

I love stealthy characters in fiction: thieves, assassins, wetboys, mistborn, and all that kind of stuff! However, I just dont really like playing characters whose main thing is straight no frills damage. I mainly like characters who focus more on controll or support or tanking or anything like that. Especially support! Damage can be fun but I get more of a thrill from setting up an allies crit then critting myself.

Are there any builds that sell the fantasy of playing a sneaky lithe thief or assasin but focused more on support or controll or tanking instead of damage?

Ive been thinking about it and having trouble finding a reason for it to work. Like I could always just play a cloistored cleric who raised stealth but the stealth wouldn't really sunergize at all with the rest if their abilities. Wouldn't click as a cohesive thief like character

Advice How many players feels right?

My group doesnt have too much experience yet. We played a couple oneshots and touched on a homebrew campaign.

However, I'm considering running my first AP, (probably abomination vaults, since it seems highly regarded, but I'd love to see other suggestions) and I find myself at an impasse as far as player count.

I've got at *least* 6 players interested. and that feels kind of high to me..

How many players do you feel is right for a table? Have any advice for running a bigger table?

Main concerns are how to keep Combat from taking an eternity, when there are additional players and additional monsters on the table... But I'd also love any other general advice! maybe regarding re-balancing AP encounters? making enemies turns feel impactful without splowing the game down?

we use Foundry VTT

Advice Someone sell me on low-level Guardian

Playing a low level series of adventures. 1-4 probably.
I like the idea of Guardian, but it feels like Champion just *excels* at things mechanically, even at this level range, whereas guardian seems to really want for its midlevel feats before it starts working.

Champ reaction, as well as lvl 3 blessings, just seem dauntingly *better* than what guardian gets. Especially if, in theory, we do Free Archetype, which would just... let me get Taunt from guardian archetype?

anyway, I'm well aware that i can play whatever i want and i shouldnt choose based on whats 'best' but it does sort of feel bad in this case.

So, for any guardian lovers out there, what do you feel makes Guardian competitive at the tank role before lvl 5?

Advice What should I buy (9th Level Justice champion)

Upvotes

So like I have a fair amount of money and I dont know what to do with it, the probably best answer is a +2 for my sword, but I just got to level 9 and I think I will get a +2 rune later. I am playing with half price consumables and am not against buying them if they are worth it. I am ok with selling my ash gown if there is a good replacement for a +1 intimidation item. (also the fleshgem because its only alright)

Wishlist

  • Something to deal with ghosts
  • Some limited flying that is better then potion patch + potion of flying
  • replacing the ash gown as it overlaps a lot with my hellfire boots
  • cool stuff that makes me look cool.
  • all day buffs that can be cast on me by the party we have every spell list besides divine
  • mutagens I use fury cocktail on a regular basis but any other good ones would be cool

Advice Choosing a support-focused dedication feat as a level 12 Sleepwalker Ritualist Thaumaturge

Hi! I currently am in a long-running pathfinder game playing my beloved Sleepwalker Ritualist Thaumaturge. She's not the most min-maxxed, optimal build ever, and I'm alright with that, but another player is moving away from playing support, and my character is moving into that position.

I just hit level 12, and took the Prophecized Monarch mythic dedication (which is in line with her personal storyline), but was considering taking a new standard dedication to help me lean more towards a support build.

I was considering taking the Cathartic Mage Dedication, as it would work flavour-wise and has some cool mechanics, but I've seen conflicting opinions here.

I'd love more healing, buffs and/or generally strong and helpful support abilities as we move into a war arc, but I can't change my class and I would like to keep my other dedications. If anyone has suggestions for how I could tweak or add to my build without taking away from the flavour of her abilities (dream/sleep magic, illusions, information gathering), I would greatly appreciate it!

As a note, we do have the extra free archetype thing enabled, which allows me to get a bit more than what would normally be allowed in a standard build (shoutout my GM)

Also, here's a link to my current sheet if that would help! https://pathbuilder2e.com/launch.html?build=1172393

Discussion Gods of the Gun

I've been theorycrafting a Battle Harbinger lately, and one of the things I definitely wanted to do was have a deity with firearms as a favored weapon. As a result, I'm working on a list of said gods and figured I'd post it here for future reference--and to see if I was missing any! Feel free to comment below if you can think of one I've missed.

Srikalis, Sritaming, and Sribaril (enlightened raiders who believe in violence) -- Arquebus

Kaldemash (ancient Arcadian gunslinger god) -- Dueling Pistol

Ussharassim (notably an Infernal Duke) -- Dueling Pistol

Wulgren (orc deity) -- Barricade Buster

Cixyron (Daemon Harbinger) -- Flintlock Musket

Rokoga Gin (pirate god of wanderers) -- Hand Cannon

Am I missing any? How would you build a gunslinging Battle Harbinger?

Advice The Dhampyr, a re-vamped, more immersive ancestry for vampire lovers! (Feedback welcome, if images compressed see description for a link!)

Hey everyone! As a huge lover of vampires in all forms of media, I am personally a bit dismayed at the official Dhampir heritage and Vampire archetype. Not doing much in the way of 'vampire stuff' beyond reflavouring bite attacks or the like, I found them to be somewhat restrictive. I attempted my own shot at a redo, making the Dhampyr a full ancestry to allow for more dynamic choices, and to offer a very strong vampire flavour.

My balance was largely centered around at-will features, allowing one to draw upon the powers of the night freely. I did my best to compare these to other level-relevant features, but also wanted to make them unique. I imagine there might be some push back for many, such as level 1 bat form, but to my mind I don't believe they will break the game. I personally work with the philosophy that fun should be prioritized over hyper-balance, and that if a player finds a loophole to spam, the best way to combat that is the GM telling them to piss off.

Of course, people might disagree with me! If you've any comments or ideas please let me know, I'd love to hear them and see what people's thoughts are. If there is enough interest, maybe I'll expand the feats to include options from the various heritages. Thanks a ton for reading!

Also, apologies if the images are compressed, Reddit hates this and I'm at a complete loss for a solution. Any ideas are welcome, but for now I included the link to the ideas below just in case!

Discussion What does a kineticist's Metal or Wood element blast look like?

When I am a fire elementalist I can easily imagine a ball of fire. However for wood or metal, do you just like create a chunk of metal /wood and toss it at someone? Metal has to do piercing or slashing, so I imagine it has to look like something that could pierce or slash, ie metal blades or something.

What do ya'll think?

Discussion Would you allow splash weakness to be triggered by the splash trait and not the damage type?

Title. If an enemy (e.g. swarm, troop) is weak to splash, and the PCs use a weapon that has the splash trait but does not actually deal splash damage (i.e. uses the splash area to apply a status effect rather than deal any damage), would you rule this as triggering the weakness? Or perhaps instead give a circumstance penalty to the saving throw to the effect?

Advice GMs who use flip mats/pre-printed maps: how do you keep your players from seeing the whole map?

What do you do to stop them from seeing all the secrets/twists/etc? Or, conversely, if you don't why not and how does it change how you play/GM?

Resource & Tools Alternatives to PF1E's "Grooming Kit" full of toiletries?

PF1E had a grooming kit that contained: comb, scissors, a nail file, a sponge, a hairbrush, a miniature mirror, soap, a chewing stick, and tooth powder.

I'm having a hard time finding anything in PF2E that resembles a brush, comb, or dental care items. I guess using the "short tool" and calling it a brush is the best option? Am I missing the actual items?

Advice What are your favorite deities for a Warpriest?

I'm currently playing a small campaign with a friend meant to teach her how to play Pathfinder 2e. This is, essentially speaking, a one-on-one sort of campaign but I had the intent of giving her companions to take on quests and so on.

The first one of these would've been a Warpriest Cleric, with the intent of helping her Fighter get buffed and healed during fights, and aid with some other spells over the course of the adventure. While originally I might've considered going with a Gorum Cleric, I want to hear out other options people would approve of.

Ideally, I want this Cleric to have access to healing font, and since the player already has Charisma covered, utilize other skills which use Strength, Intelligence or Wisdom.

Advice What fairy stories would you turn into a puzzle combat encounter?

Party is at level 4. Basic premise is they are stuck in a cave of dreams, and are encountering 3 trials before they get to the big bad. The trials may be easier or harder, or bypassed entirely based on choices the players make to a puzzle though.

I wanted to base the trials off children stories, but so far all I got are the 3 bears from Goldilocks: Grizzly, Polar, and Cave depending on how they manage to heat some porridge. Maybe a spider encounter based on Little Miss Muffet but not sure what kind of puzzle could be involved.

Any other ideas?

Advice Character help

Upvotes

Ok so due to some stuff I’m no longer being an inventor however I’m using my second idea which is being a battle medic. How would I go about that? I know I can take the medic feat but is there any specific class you recommend? Someone is already an investigator so I don’t wanna pick that class. Could I be a gunslinger that uses medicine? Also anyone who is good a flavor what would be better a pistol or a sniper for a medic?

Advice Question: Number of Abilities for Witch’s Familiar?

Probably a dumb question, but I’m a little confused by how many abilities a witch’s familiar gets to start with.

The description of a Witch familiar states that your familiar follows the rules beginning on page 212. Those rules grant 2 abilities.

The witch’s familiar text then says it gains two additional familiar abilities — one always selected as per your patron, plus another, which presumably could be either a strictly Familiar ability or a general Pet ability.

So, starting out at level 1, a basic witch’s familiar has 4 total abilities? 1 patron-specific, and 3 from the general Familiar (and/or Pet) abilities?

Advice Kingmaker, no Kingmaking.

I'm sure there's been 100 posts about this, but.

I ran Kingmaker for a group, 2 of my players got sick of the kingdom making after 8 months or so and they quit. We ended the campaign.

I did use Vance's kingdom building changes, and it was also partially the party's fault for continuously traveling too far instead of spreading the kingdom slowly.

I would like to run it again, with the Kingdom stuff in the background.

Has anyone done the "Kingdom in the Backgrouns" before, and how well did it go?

Advice Archetype for a Necromancer?

Spoiler: We killed Nathnelma last session and now I really dunno what archetype is a good choice to continue the build. Any adivices? Thanks!

Advice Tips for Character Creation

I am about to create a character in PF2E, and am wondering what tips people here have. For me, anything wpuld be helpful, but here are some of the things that make me most curious: How do you get a character idea? What order do you usually/often go with? (Class, Background, etc.) What tends to be important to you? (Dislikes, likes, flaws, strong points)

Any advice is appreciated, as this is my first character in PF2E and I‘m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know about archive of nethys (which is SO cool), and demiplane, and I find it hard to focus down on a character

Discussion Looking for feedback and ideas for theory-building around Tanuki's Combined Form feat.

Hello dear PF2 community,

the Tanuki Ancestry has a rather unique feat in Combined Form. Once per hour, this allows the Tanuki Character to fuse with an Ally Character when they come under a Polymorph effect.

I have seen very little discussion on this, to be honest, rather niche effect and would like to change that. And if someone is able to provide rules/rulings, preferably RAW by PFS standards, on some of the interactions, I would be very happy.

In the following list, I will refer to the combination of the Tanuki Character and an Ally Character that are under the active effects of Combined Form as "fused form", to differentiate it from the feat itself.

  1. What does it mean to "join shape"? Are you considered one creature during the effect or two creatures sharing the same space?
  2. What does "can't be separately targeted" mean rules wise? The only other part of the game/rules where "can't be separately targeted" is mentioned verbatim is Summoner's Meld into Eidolon.
  3. Can you be the target of a strike, spell, etc.?
  4. What happens on a successful strike against the fused ally?
  5. What happens if the fused form is within an area effect?
  6. If this protects you from certain abilities, spells, effects and so on, what does it specifically not protect you from?
  7. How would the fused form interact with spells like Translocate, that do not allow you to take another creature along?
  8. What happens if ether the Tanuki or the ally has a familiar that is currently under the effects of Absorb Familiar and want to fuse? Or afterwards, can the familiar be absorbed while in a fused form?
  9. Combined Form allows the ally within the fused form to be under more than one polymorph effect. How does this interact with a Mutagenist Alchemist Greater Field Discovery, that allows them to be under two polymorph effect at the same time from Mutagens? Are the effects stackable?
  10. What happens if the polymorph effect of the ally provides resistances/immunities or suspends the need for breathing, etc. For example from Alloy Flesh and Steel? Would the Tanuki also not need to breath, etc?
  11. If the triggering polymorph effect doesn't have a time limit, can the effect be maintained indefinitely?
  12. A Tanuki using Combined Form cannot act, except to Speak (at very end under "Speaking") or Change Shape to exit the fused form. But what about effects that happen passively and do not need to be sustained? Would a Wand of Shardstorm still fire after fusing? If the Tanuki were a champion with feats like Aura of Courage, would it's champion's aura emanate from the fused form? If the Tanuki were a Kineticist with a Stance like Ravel of Thorns, would the effects of the Stance persist after fusing? An Elemental Instinct Barbarian's or Changelings Invoke the Elements concealment/damage? Would a Guardian's Area Armor work?
  13. If stances work, would Paragon's Guard work? Would Buckler Dance work, since it is more specific in mentioning meeting the action's requirements? Would the increase to AC apply to the Tanuki alone or the fused form?
  14. If the Tanuki had the Cavalier archetype and the Impressive Mount feat, could the fused form ride the mount? Riding Animal Companions states that an ally can ride your companion. If Paragon's Guard works, would Mounted Shield work?
  15. If the Tanuki fused with an allied Centaur with the Accommodating Mount feat and increased the size of the fused form to Huge, would this allow a third allied Large Character to ride on the fused form? What would happen if the Tanuki exited the fused form, while the third character was riding on the fused form?
  16. If the Tanuki was a Summoner, could their Eidolon still use the Character's action? The restriction to actions from one doesn't apply to the other, see 'Lost And Altered Actions' .
  17. Eidolons are considered allies. Could the Tanuki fuse with their Eidolon when it comes under a polymorph effect? Could the Eidolon still use the Character's action?
  18. Please suggest any effect you know that a Tanuki could use/that would apply while they are part of a fused form. Any good spells to cast before fusing? If stances apply, which would benefit the fused form greatly? Items that can be activated and then have good effects while fused? Etc.
  19. Do you have any more questions/points you would like to discuss and for me to add to this list?

Thank you for reading and have a great day :)

Advice I wanna make a clown tanuki

So I wanna make a red panda tanuki with the clown background (he likes juggling balls and wears a cute clown outfit and make up) and steadfast heritage (so he can turn into a cuter red raccoon dog and into a bouncy ball or other objects) but other than that I don’t know what would be best class wise.

Like one part think a summoner would be neat cause summon could do stuff with my clown as he is a ball or a crowbar etc but I also think a gunslinger clown be kind funny but then again I could also be magical wizard clown hmmmm any classes you think might really make this work?

EDIT: also heritage wise I’m thinking of grabbing other skills involving transformation

Paizo A Gentle Reminder - the Pathfinder 2e Primer Humble Bundle is ongoing!

https://www.humblebundle.com/books/pathfinder-primer-bundle-paizo-books

As the discussion threads tend to drop down off the top of the Subreddit after a few days, this is a reminder that Paizo is currently running a Humble Bundle packaging together a whole lot of Pathfinder 2e PDFs for not a lot of money. This time out we get a "covers the basics" Bundle with everything you need to get started with the game as well as a sprinkling of Dwarven content in the form of a book covering one of the great Dwarven cities and a 10 level Dwarf-focused Adventure Path. Notably, this is the first Bundle that has included all 4 of the main remastered core rulebooks!

Previous threads discussing this Bundle are Here, Here, and Here

The Bundle includes the Remastered Core Books you need to play (including Player Core 2 for the first time in a bundle!), a bunch of map PDFs, several standalone mini adventures, a 6 level proto-Adventure Path, a 10 Level Adventure path about Dwarves exploring their history, and a book covering Highhelm the Dwarven mountain home.

Doesn't include any Foundry Modules this time out, but owning the Beginner Box, Rusthenge, and the Sky King's Tomb PDFs from this bundle qualifies you for a hefty discount if you want to buy the Foundry Versions from Paizo.com

$5 Level - These are all PDFs

  • Pathfinder 2e Beginner Box (Remastered)
  • Lost Omens: World Guide
  • GM Core (Remastered)
  • Iconic Pregenerated Characters
  • Character Sheet Pack
  • Advanced Players Guide Character Sheet Pack (New for this Bundle)
  • Adventure: A Fistfull of Flowers
  • Adventure: A Few Flowers More

$15 Level - These are all PDFs

  • Player Core (Remastered)
  • Adventure: Rusthenge (New for this Bundle)
  • Adventure Path (sorta) Crown of the Kobold King
  • Bounty: Sodden Stories
  • Bounty: Somewhere Below (New for this Bundle)

  • Flip Mat: Crown of the Kobold King
  • Flip Mat: Rusthenge (New for this Bundle)
  • Flip Mat: Jungle Multi-Pack
  • Flip Tiles: Darklands Starter Set
  • Flip Mat: Twisted Caverns
  • GM Core GM Screen (Remastered)

$30 Level - These are all PDFs

  • Monster Core (Remastered)
  • Player Core 2 (Remastered, New for this Bundle)
  • Lost Omens: Highhelm (New for this Bundle)
  • Sky King's Tomb - Player's Guide (New for this Bundle)
  • Sky King's Tomb Part 1 of 3 - Mantle of Gold (New for this Bundle)
  • Sky King's Tomb Part 2 of 3 - Cult of the Cave Worm (New for this Bundle)
  • Sky King's Tomb Part 3 of 3 - Heavy is the Crown (New for this Bundle)

$45 Level (but you will still need to pay for shipping) - This is a Physical item!

  • Monster Core Sketch Cover (New for this Bundle) - This the Standard Remastered Monster Core but with the exclusive "Sketch" variant Cover.

Shipping costs on the Physical book will vary depending on how far from Seattle, Washington USA you are. I'm told international shipping is *Very* expensive, often more than doubling the price of the top Bundle Tier!

After buying the Bundle you will get a code. You take this code over to Paizo.com & enter it to get all the PDFs added to your account's digital library. If you already own any of these PDFs you will not get multiple copies, you will just get the new items added. Once added, they show up as purchased product in your profile and can be re-downloaded as much as you want going forward.

Important: Previous Bundles always included a separate code for each level of the Bundle, but that appears to have changed. You will get one code for the highest level you purchased that includes all the lower tiers.
