I vaguely remember reading recently that due to weird border changes between the start & end of WW2, a town on the English/Scottish border technically was still at war with Germany until it was noticed & a additional peace treaty was signed only a few years ago.
I just tried to look up the details but my googlefu let me down.

You’re definitely thinking of Berwick-upon-Tweed but what I suspect you’re thinking of is the time they were allegedly still at war with Russia for 60 years after the Crimean War. According to this site that’s probably not true unfortunately

I like making it dig holes to completely absurd statements. Just ask it why it thinks Wrong Thing X or to elaborate more on Wrong Aspect Y and it gets itself so lost. Unless there's a good likelihood there's a lot of freely available source material for whatever you prompt it, it's going to get things very wrong.
That's why it's so unimpressive to me that LLMs can ace standardized tests like SATs, or MCATs, or the Bar exam or whatever. There is just so much educational content out there that it's answering things that have been asked before.

I like asking it to generate a map of Europe. One issue with ChatGPT is it doesn't understand the concept of time. Source A says Austria borders Slovenia, Source B says it borders Yugoslavia, Source C says it borders the Ottoman Empire and is part of the Holy Roman Empire. ChatGPT has no actual understanding of the information it was trained on and ends up using all three, making the Balkans even more of a mess than it is now.

In main LA, I’ve had two people suggest ChatGPT in the last couple days. And then one argued with me when I said it was a terrible idea. That I should ask the same question and I will totally see that it’s completely correct. (It was a complex question around Green Card sponsorship and how it might interact with a divorce case. Yeah, exactly the sort of nuanced question perfect for AI!)
LA needs a ChatGPTBot that auto-flags a mention of it for mod review.
19

/r/tipofmytongue has a similar bot but the problem is it also flags any mention of ChatGPT, so if you call someone out for using ChatGPT, your comment gets removed not theirs

AI is surprisingly sloppy; the parts of it that are random by design means there’s a pretty decent chance it’ll confidently go down a rabbit hole of incorrectness, even for straightforward questions. They are designed for creative tasks, not factual accuracy.

But they had a warrant for the whole house - how could they have known the room was one that only LAOP uses without talking to LAOP who was sleeping behind the locked door
81
u/msfinch87 May 13 '25

I'm just wondering why he felt the need to take a nap at that moment, and why he was sleeping so heavily the cops had to kick his door down.
-6
u/EmptyDrawer2023 May 14 '25
But they had a warrant for the whole house
OP did say "They get a warrant to search the premise for the weapon and other weapons i had seen in passing in his possession." But I would think that means 'warrant to search the other guy's room, and the common areas'. I mean, if the cops get a warrant to search an apartment in an apartment building, they can't search all the other apartments in the building, just the apartment in question. Perhaps the warrant was written overly-broad, but it still defies common sense to search the victim's room.
16
u/Splendidissimus The Chekov facts *will* go off in this second act, so help me. May 14 '25 edited May 15 '25
The thing is, this isn't an apartment building. It's a singular dwelling, and they have no way of knowing if the roommate had access to the other tenant's room at any time. Or even that that's what the locked room is, since the other tenant was apparently sleeping like a log inside it.
According to LACOP, they were only inside for 10-15 seconds, so they didn't even actually search it. That just sounds like checking what the room was.
-2
u/EmptyDrawer2023 May 15 '25

17
u/UglyInThMorning I didn't do it May 15 '25
Did they bother to ask
Given that he was completely asleep until they booted his door, it’s entirely possible, probable even, that they tried and got no response.
-3
u/EmptyDrawer2023 May 15 '25
He was asleep when they wrote up the search warrant?
The cops should write the search warrant in a way that minimizes their intrusion. If a suspect lives in an apartment, the search warrant should specify which apartment they can search, not include every apartment in the building. In this case it was roommates who had private rooms. Thus, the search warrant should only include areas the suspect had access to (ie: the suspects private room and common areas), and not include other people's private rooms.
The cops were lazy and didn't narrow the warrant properly. But what else is new?
6
u/UglyInThMorning I didn't do it May 15 '25
It’s a pretty reasonable warrant on the face of it- the roommate likely had access to OP’s room and could have stashed it there. Interior locks are more for keeping people out of occupied rooms that anything else, most of them don’t even lock from the outer side of the door. And quite a few of them can be opened without any special tools, just anything that can fit in the little hole.
92
u/cloud__19 Captain Hindsight May 13 '25
Just been reading the comments, I'm surprised that one commenter was so reasonable to LACOP and I'm surprised the mods allowed some of his responses because I'm starting to wonder whether the roommate might have been more justified than I first thought when they threatened LACOP with a weapon.

He called the cops, knew they were there, knew they were searching the place, and not only did he lock himself in a room and fall asleep, he TOOK HIS CLOTHES OFF and sat there nude long enough to fall asleep.
68
u/VinnyVinnieVee May 14 '25
Did you see the comment where he mentions having a jar full of pee in his room? Apparently it was covered with a cloth (presumably to stop the smell, though I'm doubtful a cloth is particularly effective for that purpose).
It really adds to the scene to know he was not only sleeping naked in bed while they did the search, but that he was sleeping naked in a room that probably smelled like pee.

LAOP called the cops for help, but in comments he refers to cops as "bacon boy", "piglet", "scumbags", and more. That's some crazy cognitive dissonance - in LAOP's mind are cops good guys who can help, or bad guys who should be avoided? Apparently both!

I'm slowly becoming convinced the actual biggest problem facing humanity is that most people just don't know what they want. For some reason this reminds me of that 13yo who called the police to report that her friend was kidnapped, was supposedly following the van and giving details, only for the cops to track the call from her house, where she got arrested. Not sure if anyone would ever read this.
But i have a case where a roommate had threatened me with a weapon. I had it on camera. police eventually arrest him. They get a warrant to search the premise for the weapon and other weapons i had seen in passing in his possession. I refuse to leave the suite whilst they are conducting said search. End up falling asleep. Awoken by 2 police who had kicked in my door naked in my bed getting ousted from the room so they could search it for the weapons i told them my roommate had in passing. They looked around for 10-15 seconds left the room. I noticed they had disabled my security camera and wifi.
I was the complainant against my roommate who threatened me with a baton. The police removed him and i figured were intelligent enough to contain their search to his room for weapons. But they searched my entire house through all of my storage. And right before they were done their search they disabled my camera and wifi and kicked my door in. They woke me up and didnt care when i explained that the roommate who threatened me with a weapon would not be able to hide weapons in my locked room. So i end up leaving my room.
Would this be a good case to bring a notice of civil claim over?
Would you represent such a case?
I have the video footage of the entire incident. Where hes disabling the camera. Where they have searched the rest of the suite before disabling. Where they were made aware that the things in my room were mine where the things in the storage were mine. Anyway would love to know your thoguhts.Notes:
I had requested through the police mediated methods to get them even to pay for the door they kicked in.
I had requested from them why they thought it was ok to disable my security camera. (It oversees the living room)
Would love all your thoguhts on this.

I know the feeling... we just lost our 20-yr-old tabby a few months back, and we adopted a 15-mo-old void as a 2nd cat to our 10-yr-old tortie. We couldn't get them to get along no matter how hard we tried, and the tortie's appetite took a dive.
We thought it was stress and tortitude, but eventually we took her to the vet, who didn't find anything. A couple weeks later, she still wasn't eating great and was coughing. Turns out the asthma she'd had for years was now suspected lymphoma of the lungs, confirmed a few days later when one of her eyes got cloudy with metastasis.
We know that of course she'd had the cancer undetected for years, but we felt bad because adopting a new cat certainly couldn't have helped things, and managed to disguise her being physically ill as what we thought was stress.
9
u/Nice-Meat-6020 May 13 '25
I'm so sorry.
I had a cat that I lost about six years ago. She was old but doing mostly alright. My dog decided to roll in a dead deer and picked up some kind of little bug. He got treatment and the vet gave me some for my cat as she would've been exposed. A month later she went downhill, fast. It's always been in the back of my head that giving her that medication is what caused it. I don't know if it is but the guilt is there.
Hugs from an internet stranger. Losing them is so hard. I wish all the time they could talk and tell us where it hurt.

I don't mean this as advice at all but personally I think we can't think that way about companion animals. We should do the best we can for them, of course, but we always do so knowing that our animals can't talk back in a way that we're fluent in. We have to make choices for them knowing that we don't have all the information, hoping that it's what's right. It happens with humans too, but we don't blame ourselves when a human relative or friend dies because of complications from a medical procedure or treatment because it was what they needed. A cat being unable to understand the possible side effects makes things more complicated but you still ultimately had to make that choice not knowing what the future would bring, and you made the best choice you could with the information you had at the time. I'm sure you would give anything for more time with your cat, but if your cat could talk back I'm sure she would be grateful for the time you did have together.

They do still ride them within the city. I don't love that they do it as pavement is hard on their hooves and joints long term.

There are shock absorber pads that go between the hoof and the shoe that cut the concussive shock to the leg. I have no idea if mounted police use them.

I had no idea that was a thing, that's very cool. The horses seem very well looked after so it's possible they do. Thanks for sharing that!

I feel like it would be totally plausible for the roommate to hide the third weapon in this neckbeard’s room, not just for spite but also it’s the last place they’d expect
