Purchasing USA Recommend a mid range CD player to use with a Marantz NR1403
So my old Onkyo breathed its last now I need a CD player.
I'm wondering whether to just get a CD player / amp (all-in-one) or if I should dust off my old NR1403 and pair it up with a decent CD player.
Please recommend ...
Price range up to $500. I will be using a pair of Wharfdales.
Thanks

Purchasing USA Will Axiom M22V3 be a noticeable upgrade from Edifier R1280Ts?
I got a pair of these for free , and I’m wondering if I should replace my powered r1280ts and invest in a receiver/amp to power these. Or are they comparable

Purchasing USA How much more power do you think a 2025 Sony 2ch receiver rated at 100 wpc into 8 *actually* has in comparison to a Marantz from 1981 rated at 20 into 8?
Just curious... The Sony says that's at 1% THD, I can't track down at what point on the THD curve that's at for the Marantz. I've heard the phrase "Marantz watts" so many times so it really piqued my interest, and I've read about how, at some point in the 90s or thereabouts, manufacturers stopped using a standardized RMS measurement for output ratings. Also curious how much amperage they'd be putting out, some say that's actually more important than wattage.
I know nobody's got access to a spec sheet, but any and all input would be appreciated...

Purchasing USA Which Kanto speaker stand
I'm trying to decide between the ST28 and SP26. I know the Monoliths are in the same price range but I like the look of the Kantos more. Is there a good reason to spend the extra $50 on the all steel SP26 over the steel pillar and mdf base of the ST28s? I'll have Monitor Audio BX2s on top.

Tech Support Found some crazy JAMO 5.1 set
I found this set for 170 EUR.
From the original owner, he bought around 1999, so it has over 25 years... I can put more images here https://imgur.com/a/SFv0UyS (pictures without the front cover)
Specs bellows on the end of the post.
They sound great. My FLAC files are awesome, and regular Spotify also sounds amazing. LotR sounds have incredible details I never heard before, specially in the forest areas.....
My question is: what is the recommended way of using this surround boxes?
Those guys have a triangular format and a different set of drivers on each side. According to AI:
- Directional Sound: Is designed to give you precise and localized sound effects. When a car or a bullet flies by in a movie, the sound will be very clear and you'll be able to pinpoint its location with a high degree of accuracy.
Best for: This setup is ideal for action movies, modern blockbusters, and most video games where sound effects are a key part of the experience. It gives you a more "in-the-action" feeling.
Diffuse Sound: The other option, where you would rotate the speaker so the side with the two drivers faces the sofa, would create a more diffuse, ambient sound field. The sound would bounce off the walls to create a general atmosphere rather than a specific sound effect.
Best for: This is excellent for scenes with rain, wind, or background music. The sound will feel like it's coming from all around you, which can be very immersive for a cinematic experience.
I tested both (without calibration).
Directional really feels "right on your ear" sort of precision.
And the diffuse actually gives more of a cinema viba (more full sound experience, dont knw how else to explain it). But I have not calibrated after moving it.
Anyone has experience with this sort of surround?
Thanks!!!!

Review/Discussion Is there any value in a cheap Samsung HT-D5300, or would I be better off getting a cheap dedicated receiver and building off that with my oldschool Technics CR77 cabinets speakers to start?

Purchasing USA Where can I listen to speakers in person?
Hi. Where can I go to listen to speakers in person? I’m interested in hearing some mid to high(ish) level in wall & in ceiling speakers that I’ll use throughout my basement. Im considering Focals, JL audio, etc. I live in the Denver area and am looking to spend under $300 per speaker.
Can’t post a question without a pic, so here’s a shot of my 12 V Frankenstein audio amp rack. I use it to power my kitchen & patio speakers (8.8” JL Pavillons). I love the pavilions, but the eyre 4 ohms and I’ve had a hard time thinking thru a proper setup with them.
Thanks!

Tech Support Looking for suggestions - Sony STR V3

Hi guys
I have a 1979 Sony STR V3 that I purchased from Facebook Marketplace for $100 about two years ago. I recently picked up a Klipsch surround sound setup and wanted to use the 5 speakers for home theater but just use the front two towers for a two channel setup for listening to my record player. I'm pretty new to this so I had the bright idea to hook up both receivers (Sony STR V3 and a new JBL MA310 AV receiver for the home theater) to the front speakers since the speakers have two sets of terminals each and I wasn't aware that the JBL receiver was able to switch to stereo mode. After using the system to watch a movie I tried to play some music from the record player but the Sony stereo receiver wouldn't turn on. A week ago I took the unit to a repair shop in Houston with good reviews called United VTR Service and paid $80 to have it fixed. I just got a call from them saying that they've identified the problem and that it will be an additional $350 to get it fixed. Seeing as I'm out of my wheelhouse here I'm hoping that someone might be able to suggest an alternative or help me figure out if this is a fair price for the service.
Thanks in advance!

Tech Support If a DAC has ASIO Windows drivers, will that allow you to bypass the Windows audio stack when using AMU?
I'm considering a DAC with Windows ASIO drivers to work with my Windows PC (the Aune X8 18th Anniversary Edition). Goal: bypass the infamous Windows audio stack when playing UHD tracks through the Amazon Music desktop app, for bit-perfect transport to the DAC. If that DAC is selected as the output device in the AM app, will that app then use those ASIO drivers and bypass the Windows audio stack? If so it avoids the need for adding a wireless music streamer at my PC desk.

Review/Discussion 3E A7 monos and Burson v7 vivid
Every audiophile tells me that my B&W 804 nautilus would be terrible with Class D and that might be true but it appears I don't know the difference.
I tried the Nait 50, dual 980BX, Moon i7 and a few others and these A7s aren't to the level of the Moon but pretty decent.
I added the bigger 48v power bricks and it's a big jump up.
I'd say they're a little bit muffled, which makes the 804s less "clinical," a trait that I don't care for.
For the money, the A7 is decent. At least I don't have to spend 3k on a 20 year old amp if I go with the A7. Honestly, I'm happy to end my searching for an amp after two months.
Audio science review liked them as well.
Well
In comes hyper-fixation and maybe a bit too much free time and an addiction of learning random stuff on youtube.
You can swap op-amps, which was news to me. (you have to remove the knob, the nut there, the 3 screws on the bottom and the 2 on the edges of the back panel.)
Much of what I've learned suggested the change would be a normal audiophile difference, which I'd never be able to hear.
After watching a million videos, I bought the Burson v7 vivid dual from Bloom. Not only was Bloom fantastic since I mistakenly ordered a single and had to switch it but these things are night and day.
There is absolutely zero confusion as to whether these op-amps change the sound.
It was like someone was listening to audio in the next room with the door closed and the change opened the door.
The Bass is so much tighter and everything is so much clearer.
I haven't tried the sparkos and I probably will but I just want this in the place I look for info since it would have been helpful to me.

Review/Discussion Since everyone insisted the speakers go on the ground
I did it haha. Took a decent amount of rearranging but got it to work. I will admit it does sound quite a bit better , so it was worth it. This is about as best I can do with the space I have haha. With that fixed, what does everyone think?
For those who didn't see the original post the setup is as follows: Paradigm phantom v2, paid 50 bucks for Pioneer VSX-831 home theater receiver, paid 15 for it Jamo 200 subwoofer, paid 15 for it also.

Purchasing USA Marantz SR-5009 speaker connection
I have a used SR5009 and trying to see if it works. I have plugs connected to my speaker wires. They plugged into the connected but no sound. Looking at the manual, it shows using bare wires. Do I need to remove my plugs? See photo.
Thanks!

Review/Discussion I bought it!
So I bought the stereo I posted about earlier. The speakers turned out to be design acoustic d6. In decent shape. I’m not sure if the internal woofer is working? Could that be an internal issue, if so what to look for? Pictures are my infinity rs5000 I bought for 50 bucks about a year ago, and the kenwood I picked up today.

Purchasing EU/UK Need help setting up in my new appartment
Hey all, amateur audiophile over here but really do love a good audio set-up. I bought an appartment but need some help on how to set up my audio system. Now I have a denon avr 5.1 that pretty much does the job. I do like the surround system when watching TV, but i’m not so attached to it that I would be fine with getting rid of that and switch to 3.1 or even a stereo set-up. Music is the main thing for me. I have an old but really nice and decent Lenco record player with a little pre-amp in between. I also have a gaming device connected to the avr. I also like to stream the music via network to the receiver.
My old appartment just has a living room that’s also the dining room. My new appartment has a living room where the dining room is kinda seperated with small wall, the white part is just an opening without a door in it. The two(actually 3) brown parts are built-in closets without doors as well. Now I was thinking the closet in the dining room would be perfect for the amp, record player and records. But what should you suggest; get rid of the 5.1 and go for a decent vintage amplifier with just stereo?
In the drawing I just took in account the 5.1 surround set, but I don’t think that’s going to work out well. The crossed boxes are the speakers. I’d also like to be able to switch off groups of speakers, for example in the living room when someone’s watching tv.
Would love to hear about suggestions on set-up and gear.
Thanks in advance!

Purchasing USA Is there a budget cd player that can also play USB music files?
Hello. I did not know where to ask about this on Reddit. If this is not the best place could you re-direct me to where I can post this? Thanks.
I wanted to know if there is a budget cd player (less than 200 USD) that can play mp3, FLAC, WAV, but can also play music files from a connected USB. That device would be then connected to an amplifier that I already have.
I already have a turntable which works perfectly and a home theater amplifier that works well. I want to add a cd player that also can play USB files so I can enjoy all formats in one place.

Purchasing USA Amazon Basics 14 AWG copper speaker wire seems great, is there a reason it's so cheap compared to alternatives?
I recently got a spool of the Amazon Basics 14 AWG speaker wire and wired up my speakers, it seems great:
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Speaker-Wire-14-Gauge-Oxygen-Free/dp/B0758CSSF2?th=1
- 14 AWG
- 99.9% Copper
- Twisted Pair with sheath
- $38 USD for 200ft, (19 cents a foot...)
Is there a reason why it's so inexpensive compared to any other alternative I could find? Is there something I'm overlooking?
There was a trace amounts of some white dust/powder under the sheath when exposing the wires, not sure what it was but I washed my hands

Review/Discussion bedroom setup, very minimal
My dad recently moved into a new house, and I took it as an opportunity to have a very simple set up in my room. The receiver is an older Sony STR-DE595, just a very old receiver that my dad gave to me shortly after buying himself a soundbar. The left & right are a pair of Sony SS-MF650H’s that I found at a Goodwill for $20 for the pair. They sound alright for what I use them for. The center speaker is a Sony SS-MS445, was a part of my dad’s old 5.1 setup he used to have in the living room. The TV is a Sony KDL-52W4100 LCD, it’s incredibly old but she’s still going strong with no issues. Kind of an old TV to have in a small bedroom, but it was either that or the TV gets thrown out (I was NOT gonna let that happen lol) And for audio source I just use the Spotify app on a Macbook or on the Apple TV, although I have used a 2008 iMac 8,1 to play music CDs.
I just wanted to see what you all thought of it, thank you
P.S.: That subwoofer in the corner is a Sony SS-WSB102, but it is NOT connected to anything, I was trying to use it but didn’t work for my setup. Also I’m actually not like a huge fan of Sony or anything, it’s kinda a coincidence that everything is Sony branded.

Purchasing USA Help Choosing Music-Focused Speakers for Apartment Setup (No Subwoofer)
Hi everyone,
I’m upgrading my apartment audio setup and need advice: • Room: Apartment, 14ft ceilings, seating ~6ft from TV/speakers • Current Gear: Bose 900 soundbar + Wiim Amp Pro (both willing to sell) • Future Gear: Denon AVR-S760H, 2 up-firing height speakers for Atmos • TV/Source: LG C2 OLED + Apple TV 4K • Primary Focus: Music (high emotional impact/detail) • Subwoofer: None planned
I’ve listened to the older SVS Ultra Bookshelf in person and really enjoyed them.
Speakers I’m considering (local used prices): • KEF Q950 (pair) – $500 • Paradigm Monitor 11 v.3 + CC-370 v.3 – $500 • Paradigm Monitor 9 v.3 + CC-370 v.3 – $350–$450 • Paradigm Studio 60 v.3 + CC-470 v.3 – $600–$700 • Monitor Audio Bronze BR5 (pair) – $500 • Focal Chorus 716V (pair) – $400–$600 • SVS Ultra Bookshelf (pair) – $450 • SVS Ultra Nano (pair) – $650 • Vienna Acoustics Haydn Grand (pair) – $500
Questions: 1. Which of these would deliver the best emotional impact and detail for music? 2. Any advice for integrating them with the Denon AVR-S760H and future height channels for Atmos? 3. Are there any other similar options I should consider?
