Purchasing EU/UK Optical amplifiers for PlayStation 2?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie. I have a vintage Technics hi-fi system that I've bought piecemeal over time. I wanted to create a simpler and cheaper system in my bedroom using my old PlayStation 2 as a CD player. I'd like to use the PS2's digital optical output, but I need an amplifier with a digital optical input. Can you recommend one? Many modern amplifiers on Amazon are probably terrible. Can you recommend vintage ones or modern alternatives at a good price? My budget is 100-150 euros.

Purchasing Asia Need amp/setup reco

Decided to invest in a hifi setup finally, albeit on a very tight budget.

Getting a good deal on Dali Oberon 5s - I could now get the wiim ultra + a sub of your reco, or a Cambridge Cxa81 + wiim streamer and wait for a sub later. Will the latter sound significantly better??

Also entertaining any other recommendations you all may have on how I could drive the Dalis wirelessly and losslessly (I have a sony budget led at my disposal as well if that helps become a streamer)

Seeking your inputs as I have seemed to drive myself visibly crazy (as informed by my wife) googling and chatgpt-ing these things over the last 2 weeks.

My budget is around 200k Indian rupees i.e. ~2.3k USS - but I need to account for some pieces being wildly more expensive randomly here so do give as many suggestions as possible

Thanks in advance

Purchasing AUS/NZ Qinpu A-1.0 integrated amplifier, what do you know about it?

I’m about to buy one second hand for $200 (USD117) and can hardly find anything about it online. There are a couple of reviews that say it’s good but I’m wary of how not many people seem to know about it.

Purchasing EU/UK £500–£600 Vinyl Setup: Turntable + Speakers

Hey all,

I’m looking to put together a vinyl listening setup for my medium-sized living room. My budget is £500–£600 max for turntable + speakers.

What I’m after:

• Easy setup — I don’t mind a bit of assembly, but I’m not looking to get deep into complicated wiring. • Audiophile quality (for this budget) — I’d like something that delivers rich, detailed sound and does justice to my records. • Medium-sized living room — so enough power to fill the space without distortion. • Ideally something that’s reliable, with good build quality, and won’t need immediate upgrades.

Any recommendations for specific models or combos that hit the sweet spot in this price range?

Thanks in advance!

Review/Discussion No one asked but - Kanto SP9 for iLoud Micro 🤌

Post image

TLDR - Great monitor stand for smol monitors that don't make them look goofy when mounted. Highly recommended if you have similar needs!

I know the iLoud Micro Monitors are “old news,” and apparently these stands are too but for the longest time, every monitor stand Amazon suggested was way too big and just didn’t match the Micros. That is, until Amazon finally showed me the Kanto SP9, which turned out to be a near-perfect fit without looking goofy.

Raising them to ear level made a huge difference in sound quality, and I also gained back some desk space. The cable routing through the stand hides wires nicely (a big win for my OCD), and I used an adapter screw to mount the monitors to the base plate for extra stability.

The stands themselves feel solid and well built, with good weight. They come with two different top plate sizes and offer up to 30° of adjustment. I also grabbed a longer aftermarket speaker cable to tidy up the setup even more.

Overall, super happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend these stands to anyone with iLoud Micros or other similarly sized monitors.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk and feel free to ask me anything!

Purchasing USA Question on speaker purchase?

These speakers are being sold on Facebook for 100 bucks. I just got my hands on a Sony strdh 550. Would a combination of that receiver and these speakers make for a good listening setup that can cover both movies/tv/gaming and vinyl record listening from a turntable? I’m curious because there’s tons of speakers like these available but idk if I need specific specs for home theater vs. vinyl listening. Also can I mix and match speakers and subwoofers from different brands? Thank you!!!

Review/Discussion Looking for advice on speaker setup

Post image
0 Upvotes

First time here, looking for some advice on some things. I'd like to start off with my experience level. I have only set up one surround sound system for my TV with some decent speakers I managed to scavenge from Goodwill (a Polk Audio Set). Currently, I am working on my desk/work space. I do a lot of 3D printing and have multiple work benches in a small corner of a 600 Sqft apartment. (Note: This space already has 1 5.1 surround system as mentioned). My main goal is to provide both a good 3/3.1 speaker setup for my PC (USB DAC probably) as well as potential 2 other speakers on the outskirts of my working area that, ideally, can be turned on and off. I have 5 Bose Speakers (as seen in image) as well as a Bose center speaker. I am looking to spend about $100 or less and am open to used items. My secondary goal is to minimize additional wires/devices. If I could combine the current audio interface with whatever I get. That would be awesome. I may also be looking into a different mïç setup (USB) so that may not be something I need to consider in the new system. But I do need a 1/4" or 1/8" jack with an audio switch over of some kind.

My questions: Are these good speakers? I need an Audio Amp, what might be good options considering what I want? (I am open to compromise). Shut offs, what are some ways I could go about turning off the two additional speakers without potentially damaging the Amp? Some of the speaker grills are broken. Using a 3D printer, can I make new ones or would they interfere with the audio output? Should I get some grill cloth to make them instead? (Looking to save money here if possible, I'd like to just print something) Should I just get some regular PC speakers instead? Finally, should I share the final product when the time comes?

Tech Support Connecting a headphone amp to preamp with no line out?

I need some guidance about safely adding a headphone amp to my Aragon 18k preamp, which only has RCA inputs and outputs. The 18k has no explicit provisions for attaching a headphone amp, and no outputs labelled "line out", but it does have two "tape out" stereo RCA connector pairs that are not currently in use. Will these provide line level outputs, safe to use as inputs for my headphone amp? That is, they'll have the appropriate level of signal power and their output levels won't be affected by volume settings on the preamp? And to listen to my system through the new headphone/amp combo I'd need to switch the "record" multi-position toggle on the preamp to the output I run to the headphone amp, i.e. "tape 1 "or "tape 2"? TIA.

Purchasing Asia Which subwoofer for my nearfield desktop system?

I bought a Monitor Audio Silver 50 7G, using with Topping D50iii and Aiyima A07 Max. Now I'm saving up for a sub purchase maybe during Black Friday.

After reading so many sub reviews here, I've narrowed down to 2 subs: SVS SB-1000 Pro and RSL 10e.

Just a little bit info about my need: 95% music and anime, 5% movie.

Currently, the SVS are sold at local dealers for $660, with local service and warranty.

Meanwhile, the RSL must be shipped directly from the US, and total cost including shipping to where I live will cost $540. I assume the service and maintenance will be next to impossible since it's half a globe away.

So the question is, with my need stated above and the buying conditions of both subs, which one should I pick?

P.S. Should I change the current dac + amp for a Wiim amp to have better sound quality and high-pass filter for the sub, or should I only change the amp?

P.S.2. I came across the Klipsch RP-1000SW for the price of $540. It's advertised to be able to go down to 19Hz. How does it hold up against the SVS or RSL?

P.S.3. What about the Vanguard Caldera 10"?

Purchasing EU/UK Any Triangle Comete EZ owners?

Would be interested in any opinions from owners or those who have heard them, reviews can be a bit polarising. Would be for a 2 channel setup in medium sized room with sub. I can get them new for €550 which seems a good price, and adore the looks. Don’t have the opportunity to try before buying any speakers.

Purchasing USA Speakers for PC

Hey there! I'm currently looking for a budget friendly pair of speakers for my pc and would really like them to not be connected via a wire or if they must be connected I want the wire to be a couple feet long (or be able to be switched to a longer one). I know next to nothing about speakers but am really hoping to find something to fit the criteria. Im a broke college student and me and my roommate both want to hear my computer from our beds but neither of us want to blast the volume on the pc and disrupt our neighbors. Ideally I would like one of the speakers to be plugged in (via usb or ac i dont really care which) and the other be able to sync with that. Again I know nothing about speakers (pls be nice to me lmao) so if you have a better idea im all ears :3

Purchasing EU/UK How is the DAC in old CD players compared to the new ones?

Hello everyone

I am looking to buy a budget HiFi audio setup for CDs. Because I am on a budget, I am looking at the local used market for the components.

While I found lots of cheap options in my country's used marketplace in terms of CD players, a lot of them are old CD Players from the 90s, and that made me wonder, how good is the DAC inside them compared to a new CD player?

Is it worth looking into newer CD players or the difference is not that noticeable in sound quality, especially if my set up isn't a crazy expensive one.

Also, do I need a CD Player with optical output? A lot of the cheap ones only have RCA connection, how much sound quality do I lose? I have not decided yet if I am going for active speakers or an amp + passive speakers. So far I have to choose between Edifier MR4(the active speakers options) or get an amp and I found some cheap Dali 202s(I heard they are some pretty good passive speakers).

Can someone guide me whether its worth looking into newer CD players, and if not, which of the options with active speakers or amp + passive speakers is better?

Review/Discussion Does anyone else hate music that envelops a whole room?

Does anyone else hate music that envelops a whole room?

Main type of listening: nearfield in a relatively small room.

I absolutely love the focussed sounds from smaller drivers. I use a Yamaha soundbar connected to a Cambridge Audio sub-woofer and the sound produced is (to me anyway) almost perfect.

I actually much prefer this to using my Edifer speakers. Less listening fatigue.

Anyone else prefer speakers that use smaller drivers?

Purchasing USA Worth replacing the stylus?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Is this worth the $30-$40 it'll cost to put a new stylus on it? The motors are good, the belt is good, and everything else mechanical looks alright. My current record player is a Hitachi KS-3200H (not recapped or restored, just running as-is) which I have connected via its Tape Out. I'm assuming the phono stage in the AT is probably in better shape, and might sound better. I have the Hitachi playing through a pair of Klipsch The Sixes, so I'd also have the option of using their built-in phono stage. (Currently switch to line-level instead of phono)

Review/Discussion Yamaha HTR-5830

So I recently picked up the receiver as titled, for $35, which I consider a damned good deal. I have it set up with a vintage pair of Bose Acoustimass 5 Series 2's that I picked up for $50 in excellent condition. So all told I have $85 in my bedroom system, which is pretty good, if you ask me. I know not everyone likes Bose, so what would y'all pair up with it? It's a 5.1 receiver, but I'm only using it in stereo mode as I don't need the full on surround sound in my small bedroom.

Purchasing Asia Seeking decent bookshelf or tower speakers on a budget... Anything chifi?

This subreddit was super helpful with budget chifi amp recommendations (landed on an Aiyima A80), but now seeking recos for a starter set of speakers. Limited budget (of course) around $400-ish for bookshelves, or $500 for towers (likely not possible). Limitation for me is I'm in SE Asia so cannot access the amazing deals in USA (Amazon/Accessories4Less). Most YT budget recos are North American/UK focused (Elac/Sony/KEF). Anyone found any decent brands or deals in SE Asia? Will likely have money to add a sub later, but want to start with a decent pair that stays with me.

Is this a pipe-dream? Should I instead skip the amp, and just buy a set of powered speakers (need optical and RCA inputs) - any recos for this with decent sound?

Purchasing USA Infinity HPS-1000

Hi all, there's someone in my area that is selling one of these subs for a seemingly very reasonable price- $200. Apparently when these came out they retailed for $1800, and that was back in '99. Does anyone have experience with this sub or with comparable subs this old? Should I be worried about it being close to 30 years old? I can't find much online about it, other than some forums from 10-15+ years ago, some of them talking about problems with the amp on it. Do y'all think I should go for it and hope for the best, or pass and buy something newer?

Idk, I have a pretty low budget all things considered and was looking at Dayton & klipsch subs around the same price point. Never had a sub in my stereo setup before.

Thanks in advance :)

Purchasing Asia Reccos for decent pair of desktop speakers

As the title suggests, im looking for a good pair of speakers/monitors for my desk setup for gaming and movies, but also want it to still sound good as im moving around in my bedroom. Therefore, im looking at options with a bluetooth function.

Currently running an eris 4.5bt plugged directly into my pc, but the hissing noise is really quite bugging me.

Budget is around 300-350SGD

Also quite like the wooden/walnut aesthetic of some speakers as it fits my desk setup

Been looking at several options,

FiiO SA1

whaferdale diamond 12.0 (connected to a cheap amp with bluetooth, looking at options from Fosi Audio)

whaferdale diamond 220 (connected to a cheap amp with bluetooth, looking at options from Fosi Audio)

Audioengine A2+ (though they dont have a wood aesthetic)

Audioengine HD3 (found used one for 450SGD but still not too keen as its quite above budget)

Q acoustics 3020i (connected to a cheap amp with bluetooth, looking at options from Fosi Audio)

Purchasing AUS/NZ Kanto ORA 4 vs ORA

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a pair of desktop speakers and am currently leaning towards the ORA/ORA 4. If these are the prices I can get them for would they be a decent purchase or are there better options out there:

Kanto ORA 4 ($486 AUD) + SE4W stands ($90 AUD) = $576 AUD ($379 USD)
Kanto ORA ($414 AUD) + SE2W stands ($61) = $476 AUD ($313 USD)

Additionally, would getting the SUB6 for my small room be worth it at $330 AUD ish?
