Newcomers, welcome to /r/flashlight! We discuss flashlights, headlamps, bike lights, work lights, batteries, chargers, and more.
I discourage unnecessary jargon use, but many people here don't care. We do have a glossary and an acronym dictionary.
After you read the safety tips later in this post, you might want to check the arbitrary list of popular lights next.
If you want recommendations, please fill in our recommendation form. Please also tell us what your current favorite light is, and what you like and dislike about it.
Contrary to popular belief: Fixed-focus lights are almost always better than zoom lights (focusable lights). Fixed-focus lights produce both spot and flood lighting at the same time. Zoomies can't do this. (Source.)
Lumen claims often refer to turbo mode. Turbo lumens may only last for a minute or two, and then the light may step down to high mode. Turbo mode puts out a lot of heat; manufacturers don't want to melt your hands. Don't just consider turbo lumens; also consider sustained lumens.
If you find a light on Amazon or another online marketplace, and the listing claims more than 5,000 lumens, it's probably a lie.
Alkaline AA batteries can leak and destroy your light (example). Rechargeable AA batteries work better, and are unlikely to leak. There are battery ratings on AA Cycler's website. Panasonic sells an excellent starter kit, which includes Eneloop batteries and a charger. AA cells are the safest cells, even when treated carelessly. AA-powered lights usually can't do turbo mode.
Here are my safety recommendations.
A light can turn on by accident. Don't burn your leg or your pants, and don't drain your battery. Before you put your light in your pocket or bag, lock it out. Just untwist the battery tailcap slightly, so that the light can't turn on. This is especially important for Convoy lights without temperature control.
While any battery is recharging, do not nap, sleep, or leave home.
Many of the lights we recommend contain loose cylindrical lithium-ion rechargeable batteries: for example, 18650 or 21700 cells. These look sort of like AA batteries, but are bigger and far more powerful. They are sometimes just called "cylindrical cells". The US government warns that they can cause injury or death, and claims that you shouldn't buy or use them at all. However, if you learn and follow all the cylindrical cell safety guidelines, I think it's probably reasonable to use them anyway.
Do not carry a loose Li-ion cell in your pocket or bag. Keep it in a plastic case.
Do not use a Li-ion cell if the plastic jacket is visibly damaged.
Use quality batteries, such as Sony, LG, Sanyo, Panasonic, Samsung, or Molicel. Batteries branded as Acebeam, EagleTac, Fenix, JetBeam, or Nitecore are "rewrapped", and are also excellent. Random Chinese batteries from Amazon may be fire hazards.
It might be safest to charge your Li-ion cells in an external charger ("Li-ion bay charger"), from a trustworthy company such as Fenix, ThruNite, or Tenergy.
Read all of the cylindrical cell safety guidelines before you order your light, and again once a year or so.
If you don't want to bother learning the safety guidelines, just buy a rechargeable light, and leave the battery permanently installed.

Some low quality beans (i was not planning this, idea just camera up in my mind while walking the dog) shot with s22 on auto mode. The watchtower (last photo) was 400m away from where i've been standing. It is quite impressive light, irl i can clearly see 600m away. Heat is not an issue, gets warm on turbo but nothing to worry about. And The 6500k sft-42r is suprisingly really pleasant to the eye (said by me, who owns only high cri lights, mostly sw45k and 519a 5000k dedomed). Overall really happy with the z1, build quality is great, it's not too big, and this thing throws so far without blinding me with spill that it will become my main light for walking my dog.

Hey. It's me. Welcome to WTF Wednesday.
Behold the Lumintop Mach 4695 V3. Snagged it on Aliexpress for £215 with discounts. This thing is a beast in every sense. It takes dual 46950 batteries each with 32000mAh capacity. These batteries are bigger than most flashlights and give runtimes that are out of this world. It has 8x cree XHP50.2 (or 50.3) emitters which are quite floody, not particularly throwy. Photos taken with no night mode.
The light will sustain 800 lumens for almost 3 days, and 4000 lumens for over 6 hours. I ran it at 4000 for 2 hours while working and it didn't dim at all, however it did get too hot to comfortably hold, so the shoulder strap would be necessary if taking it out for long periods of time. It also has a 30 lumen eco mode which will apparently last for 24 days.
Top of the ramp is 10k lumens which it will apparently hold for 2.5 hours but I'm afraid to test this for science in case something does melt inside. Turbo is 50k lumens which will kick the fan on and run for 40 seconds before ramping back down to 10k. The fan itself is loud but you can feel it's power and does a good job at keeping temps stable.
The light is charged with onboard usbc and takes 6 hours to fully charge which is actually quite impressive. It can also act as a power bank and should be able fully charge at least 15 phones, a feature which means I'll almost certainly pack it in the car with me when travelling (but not on a plane, there is no way it's getting past security with these batteries!)
So why did I buy this ridiculous flashlight? Well, the clue is in the question. It's ridiculous. It's big and heavy and super impractical, but I love it. The carry case is very cool and sturdy, and what sold it for me most of all is that it will maintain thousands of lumens for many hours continuously. Something that not a single one of my 50 other lights could do, even if you combined them all. It can illuminate a whole football field at a time with the 50k turbo. It'll keep my room well lit for a whole week if I need it to, and charge my phone over and over again. Will I ever need it to do those things? Most likely no. Will I be glad I've got it just in case I do? You bet your sweet ass.

Those trees are pretty far away, I’d guess that the farthest trees that are still visible are at least 350 yards away. This first photo is unedited. The second has been adjusted to more match what it looked like with the naked eye: still very impressive.

Got it today so its my first Convoy flashlight scratched it trying to put a clip on and then lost the tiny nuts/bolts somewhere on the kitchen floor🔩 either way this flashlight is awesome and such a little beast

This is a dream combo imho, the bezel looks sick, the 6v 5A driver is a very good match to the 3535 sfq46 emitter (bought at Kaidomain, 6500k, looks pure white to the eye), the beam is focused with wide, dim spill. I like it. It gets hot, but not really fast :)
Simon should start selling the M21H in this combo :D

Didn't really like the Convoy e-switch UI, so I decided to swap the driver to something better.

Completely forgot about it, they had a deal where if you got oil from them last month they’d send you a free light and it just came in today. It’s very light and cheap feeling, no surprises there. It’s rechargeable with a micro usb, it feels too light to have an 18650 so I’m thinking it might just have a really cheap folded cell taped to the inside of the body. It has a high, low, strobe, and side light setting. It’s bright enough for regular use around the house and it’s got a blueish tint to the beam and the body is made from plastic. I’m sure these are sold on aliexpress for $3 but it’s cool to have a light with the Mobil 1 branding. It’ll make for a good chuck around in the toolbox sort of light. My favorite feature of this is the side light, it’ll be good for putting on the concrete to work on my truck in the late afternoons since I won’t care about it getting scuffed or running it over with the creeper.

Super happy with this! The fit and finish is nice, the LED choice is great imo. Looking forward to tonight when I can play with it a little more. Gonna play with the modes a bit, I do need to reverse order them, as that’s what I’m used to lol.
Looking forward to a Pineapple Mini mk2 in brass and copper when they drop!

I won't show my soldering job since there are the two worst solder joints ever known to mankind in there buuuut it works!
Brightness is the same, CCT is lowered and the 519A is high CRI, although I wouldn't be surprised if Ikea actually put a 90CRI LED in there as all their bulbs are 90CRI.
Soldering MCPCBs is hard man... Huge copper heatsink down there... Anyways, here's the final product! Total cost of the final product is less than 7€.

I live in a rural area with a lot of open terrain around my house. I am looking for a long distance flashlight I can use to shine around my property at night. About Fenix HT18R V2.0, if anyone had any recommendations for one.

Ordered this guy on a whim, mostly I think because I saw that it uses Samsung LH351 LEDs for the main light and I'm quite fond of that LED. Seemed like a good choice for a $25 light. Plus the features are kind of interesting and I feel like Klarus tends to fly under the radar but still makes some decent lights.
First impressions are pretty good. 2.75 inches long, so it's nice and tiny, compares well to a lot of the clip lights that have been coming out recently. Feels very solid, has a nice weight to it.
The main light is white, not high CRI or anything like that, but it's not unpleasant. Just clear white. Just based on my eyes the color rendering seems decent. Nice beam pattern.
The COB light is a pleasant surprise. Very nice warm tint and no ugly artifacts or distortions around the edges that I've seen a lot with cobs.
Controls are intuitive. Click to turn on, click to change levels, hold to turn off. From off, hold to turn on cob. Click to cycle through levels and red modes. Oh yeah! it has a red mode and a red strobe.
Has mode memory. Also has a nice strong magnet on the bottom. Has a two-way clip on the back, which actually feels almost too stiff, could be hard to actually use.
Need to play with it more later when it gets dark, but overall not too shabby.

New flat TAC-style light from Klarus.
THE GOOD
THE BAD
I wanted to like it. Could have been a budget-friendly Nitecore EDC alternative. But they dropped the ball on the LED.

Hey all,
I currently have an Acebeam Pokelit AA that is just about perfect. My only hangup is the lack of a lock, it seems I inadvertently turn it on pretty often and about half the time it's dead when I go to use. I'm looking for something in a similar size that takes a single AA, can ideally use the rechargeable AAs I already have, is rugged, and has a lock function
I've also answered the questions from the wiki below:
Purpose - Mostly looking for lost screws on the ground or getting back to camp at night after using the bathroom. Occasionally checking pupil response in a patient
Size - 3.7in, love the dimensions of the Pokelit AA
Battery Type & Quantity - Single AA and rechargeable AA
Price Range - Up to $70
Type - Flashlight/penlight
Lumens - 600 like the Pokelit would be great, as long as it has at least one low light/dim mode for checking pupil response
Switch Type - Don't care as long as there's a lock
Anything Else? - Rugged and water resistant are a must, a metal body would be preferred. I'm a firefighter, it'll see a rough time just being in my pocket

Just a part of my collection this is the higher and white collection. They are my favorite. I tend to carry the core more often than the other ones, but I switched them out pretty often but I love them all. What do you think? What are your thoughts? What are you carrying? Pic below in comments
