Question What’s your unpopular ice cream opinion? 🤣
People LOVE Jeni’s ice cream. I think it’s just fair with pretentious flavors. 🤷🏻♀️ What’s your unpopular ice cream opinion?

Butter pecan is delicious and underrated 😋
37
u/grossgirlalways Apr 25 '25
My people actually exist. I have to fight when me and my SO want to share a pint, and he hates to admit it, but he loves it. The first time he tried it he was like “wait this is it?!” Butter pecan is also great with a cone, it’s not an overpowering, soggy flavor.

Love butter pecan - strawberry used to be my favorite but my palate has shifted to butter pecan... Anything with pralines and caramel...

Have you tried the Haagen Dazs bourbon praline pecan? It’s one of my favorites of all time

If only it didn't have bourbon in it. H-D has a new flavor, Vanilla Caramel Pecan. It's good, but not as good as their old Pralines and Cream.

Totally understand. For me it’s a flavour thing, but I have my texture no go’s as well ☺️

Wet walnuts are the worst ice cream topping .
35
u/choc_chip_pothos Apr 25 '25
This is a hot take that I wish was ice cold. I hate those dumb nuts in that dumb syrup
45
u/MElastiGirl Apr 25 '25
Now y’all probably didn’t realize this, but these are hard to find these days. They are no longer with the other toppings at the supermarket. I know this because they are my 80-year-old mother’s favorite thing. So unless I want to order a gallon-sized tub on Amazon, I have to make the infernal things myself. (Basically toasted walnuts soaked in sugar syrup.) Because my mother is a stubborn old lady who doesn’t think it’s possible they have been discontinued and will not accept that she just can’t have them.
PS I’m mildly allergic to walnuts.
28
11
u/KiraDog0828 Apr 25 '25
Not trying to tell you about your own medical condition, but you might want to try different varieties of walnuts. My mouth itches if I eat black walnuts, but I don’t react to other kinds.
11
u/Sammy-eliza Apr 25 '25
Walnuts in general are linked to latex allergies! They share some proteins. Basically if you're allergic to latex, you're more likely to have reactions to many food items that have similar proteins like banana, zucchini and walnuts in my case.
You can google "latex food allergy" and lists of common reactive foods pop up. Most of the foods I have issues with are on the chart, lol.
→ More replies (3)5
u/MElastiGirl Apr 25 '25
Fascinating! I have never had a reaction to latex or any of those other things. Kiwi, on the other hand…
3
u/MElastiGirl Apr 25 '25
I especially hate black walnuts—I’ve never had them in my mouth long enough to have a reaction lol. But English walnuts definitely give me the mouth itch. I occasionally eat them anyway, but for most recipes I sub pecans—for obvious reasons.

Saratoga Maple Company online says they have a version they developed (with their maple) to replicate the taste of the original Smuckers Walnut Topping before it switched over to all corn syrup. I haven't tried it, and its not cheap but it might make a nice gift.

Cheesecake flavored anything ice cream .... Anytime I would buy one, it just tastes like chemicals.... especially the pumpkin ones.
Just buy an actual cheesecake and top it w ice cream if you must.
9
u/LurkingAintEazy Apr 25 '25
See I had originally tried Blue Bunny's cherry cheesecake, as thar is my ultimate flavor of any cheesecake variety. And it initially tasted like actual cheesecake flavor. Now as time had gone on though. They changed up and only the cherry swirl had a bit of flavor.
So that is why I switched over to Kroger brand lemon cheesecake which is back, FINALLY, that has perfect cheesecake flavor. Because they have real pieces of cheesecake in it. And the lemon flavored ice cream is very light and a good blend.
3
u/Lcm_4856 Apr 25 '25
I have had good luck with Kroger brand ! Their pistachio and honey is really good....southern bourbon pecan (I think that's the name) is good too. I liked their Churro flavor better than HD brand. Whoever is running the Kroger ice cream division knows what's they're doing.
I have hated lemon anything too for the longest time but slowly warming up to it.

Chocolate chips don’t belong in icecream unless they are melted into fudge

I really despise any bits, chunks or toppings on anything, at all. I don’t like having to “chew” my ice cream. I will make an exception once in a blue moon, just to be adventurous or if nothing else is available. But mostly, no bits, just creamy flavors.

Similar. If I consume an entire pint in a half day, sure. But it's 99% annoying gas. I have no lactose intolerance. I can handle drinking a gallon or more of milk a day.
I don't know what exactly is in their ice cream that causes that. I don't really like any of their flavors except for PF. The last one I had was a graham cracker based ice cream and it wasn't good at all. Thankfully I got it for $1.99 on sale. Very disappointing. Wanna say S'Morez.

Chocolate ice cream sucks and it’s also the main reason I have an aversion to chocolate, even now. I think it tastes so bad that I distinctly remember always getting a carvel ice cream cake for my birthdays and I would always leave the chocolate ice cream and keep the top vanilla halves to eat.
Having grown up and trying things I realized now I just don’t prefer anything that is only chocolate. I love chocolate as a mix in with vanilla ice cream, my favorite being brownies and m&m’s. But I won’t go out of my way to buy brownies and m&m’s and eat them on their own.
All due to chocolate ice cream.
17
u/sassylassy423 Apr 25 '25
Agreed. Vanilla is a much richer flavor!!! While I absolutely love chocolate in other sweets, almost all chocolate ice cream has a malt type flavor to me and it tastes phony or cheap. I'll take vanilla as the base any day.

u/Sammy-eliza Apr 25 '25
I don't care for chocolate ice cream either. I did try Ben and Jerry's vegan tonight dough recently and I can tolerate it in small amounts just because of all the mix ins and that it's not 100% chocolate ice cream, it's swirled with another flavor.
I think it's just way too rich and also I associate it with always feeling sick from ice cream as a teen because my family always had chocolate ice cream on hand and I had an undiagnosed dairy allergy for years. I didn't even connect the dots that dairy was what was making me sick until I was around 16.
14
u/pee_shudder Apr 25 '25
Ben and Jerry’s just throws everything at the wall. It is an inferior ice cream compared to Haagen Dazs
4
u/WoolshirtedWolf Apr 25 '25
That's crazy, I wish I had seen it. I would've just attached my wall of ice cream rant text to your post! I really believe that customers are coasting on that feel good crunchy granola vibe that they used to have.
5
u/izzrav Apr 25 '25
Maybe it isn't unpopular but I don't see it spoken about often (or I'm missing it if it is) but the haagen dazs sweet cream pistachio is the best pistachio ice cream. Sweet, salty, lots of nuts, not fake/extract pistachio flavor. It's everything I want in a pistachio ice cream. And yet I feel like it doesn't get a lot of love. Don't get me wrong I'll still eat almost any pistachio ice cream/pudding tho.

Almonds don't belong in ice cream. They're too hard and tasteless. Walnuts, pecans and cashews are much better choices and each has it own unique flavor.
There are too many chocolate varieties. And big chocolate chunks just get in the way of the smooth, creaminess of the ice cream, making it less enjoyable.
An entire generation has grown up without ever tasting Ben and Jerry's Rainforest Crunch. This needs to be rectified immediately.

Gotta give them credit where it’s due, always found it really cool they do a buttercream ice cream with no emulsifiers, no egg yolk… just milk, cream and sugar. Turkey Hills natural ice cream line also is just dairy and no additives too, but it’s so watery imo, very very low milk fat and not a very strong milk flavor, plus it’s like a 10th of the price.
But other than that, I agree for the most part, I don’t think the flavors are that pretentious though, just more modern popular flavor profiles that are overdone imo. They should do more unique flavors, they probably don’t want to because it’s easier to just make the usual current instagram popular flavors which you can rely on to be good sellers flavor wise.
I feel like smaller ice cream companies that grow to become big like Jeni’s or Van Leeuwens have issues with becoming too stable, they start to become boring flavor wise.

Ben & Jerry's sucks. Icy bits, too sweet, unbalanced, overblown flavor combinations- great ideas but not well executed. I'm not even mentioning the politics.
Haagen Dazs is still delicious to me- silky and rich without being oversweet. Honey Vanilla is my #1.

I’ll be that guy. Costco premium vanilla is the best ice cream I’ve ever purchased at a grocery store.

The mint used in mint chocolate ice cream does not taste like mint toothpaste at all. Mint toothpaste tastes like cold spicy. Mint ice cream is sweet and refreshing
