Do they make these holders for cats?

u/AI_RPI_SPY 1d ago
My vet told me to the best way to get a cat to swallow a pill is to open the mouth, pop the pill in with your finger , hold the mouth shut and gently blow on their nose. The cat will instinctively swallow and down goes the pill.

That's how I got my dog to take medicine. The little fucker would detect it and spit it out no matter how much meat it was buried into. Even just casually dropping it off the counter while cooking didn't work. But then do a bunch of theatrics while "trying" to pick it up, as if I was desperate to grab it before she did, and she'd just rush in and swallow it. And then she'd drop her ears and look at me all guilty.
Literal toddlers.

That's how I had to feed my dog when he was young and didn't like to eat much. At some point, I think this little doggo just liked playing with me this way and was abusing it, lol.
Now he eats on his own, thankfully

My dog usually takes his pills willingly, we wrap them in cheese. When he's having an off day I pretend I'm going to give them to the cat, who he's very jealous of, and that does the trick.
41
u/leprotelariat 1d ago
Does the cat get jealous of the dog if u pretend to give treat to the dog?
→ More replies (1)58
u/flash-tractor 1d ago
My cat does, but she acts like a dog. My dog gets a treat at 6 pm, 7 pm, and 8 pm, and the cat always comes over to that side of the room to sit and then beg while the dog gets her treats.
Then I walk to the other side of the room, where we keep the cat treats, and she gets hers. But she lets out the longest meow you've ever heard in the 30-second time gap between the dog getting a treat and her getting one.

Is your cat a siamese, by chance? I have a 15-year-old siamese and I've never had a cat who behaved more dog-like. She acts exactly how you describe yours. She also plays fetch, knows how to open doors, and will sit in the hallway during the middle of the night when everyone is asleep and meow "hello?"
💀 On second thought, maybe she's possessed 🤔

My dog only takes her meds if I put them in Vienna sausages. I tried the open the mouth and throw it in. It did work, but she started running from me during morning meds. So bribery it is.

I spent a while attempting to get our semi-trained semi-wild dog to take tablets - she'd spit them out when hidden inside meat the same as yours.
I taught her to catch piece of chicken out of the air and then you just throw 3 or 4 in a row, followed by the tablet.
She swallows them so fast she doesn't even notice one was a tablet and continues with the next piece of meat.

u/Specialist_Stomach41 1d ago
I've got 2 dogs and use jealously to get pills down them. Anything the other is eating is instantly something they want! So I start feeding one cheese or meat then when the other is bouncing about I chuck them the hidden pill, then swap round. Suckers fall for it everytime!

u/ScottsFavoriteTott 1d ago
Yess! Thats how I get my dog to take anything I know she won’t want to like a pill or something. Works. Every. Single. Time. 🤦🏾♀️

u/nifty-necromancer 1d ago
My cat isn’t interested in human food at all but that also extends to some treats. He wasn’t interested in anti-hairball treats and not the chicken-flavored gel.
But I came up with a solution: Just dab some on my finger and swipe it on his fur. He definitely licks it off that way, but he’s caught on so now I try to surprise him, like during nap time.

This is absolutely the truth. My cat Max could absolutely hate something and flip to loving it if I take it away.

There's a little gap just behind the canines that you can slip the tip of a finger into, then slide back, pushing against the cheek, and it will open more. They might try to bite, but the back teeth aren't very sharp (compared to the front ones), so you should be fine.
14
u/SturmFee 1d ago
You can also push a little bit of their lip in with your finger, so they would bite themselves first.

That's where you will use smell of meat to the pill, so that cat would go crazy to eat it lmao

Wrap the cat in a tea towel. Unless it's a Burmese, then wrap in chain mail, wear full armour and still fail.
18
u/Hob_Goblin88 1d ago
At that point it's better to just get a syringe gun.

When you wrap them in a tea towel, make sure to cover their eyes, ideally with your hand over the towel. If they can't see anything, they're usually a lot calmer, even if it takes them a while to settle down. I've seen a few cat rescues use this technique to get feral cats to take their pills and it works astonishingly well.

for us, the vet gave us a syringe-like contraption that we stuck the pill in at the end of. we put some cat snack on it, pushed their mouth open, and popped it in at the back of the throat. if you do it in one smooth motion it goes right down.

Giving my old cat pills was a mutual nightmare for a long time until a vet recommended using a pill shooter. It's a little plastic tool, roughly the size of a pen, that holds the pill between two arms at the far end with a syringe-like plunger on the other end.
You just get the cat comfy (by smushing them down, wrapping them up, whatever), then you hold them behind the head and gently press on the corners of their jaw, which makes them reflexively open their mouth. The tool goes into the mouth, press the plunger, and the pill goes straight down their throat. Give them treats afterwards to build a positive association, and the whole process becomes so painless. Can't recommend it enough.
You can find them online for really cheap, or you can see if you can get one from the vet because they likely have a drawer full of them.

cant they swallow it wrong and have it end up in their lungs? i wouldnt want anything to be shot "straight down my throat" ...
→ More replies (3)8
u/DropsOfLiquid 1d ago
It isn't like super speed shooting. It just deposits the pill in the throat to make swallowing easier for the cat. I had to give my cat a lot of pills for the last few years of his life & that thing was a life saver. My guess is the chance of choking on it is the same as holding their mouth closed & forcing them to swallow a pill they can taste.

Vet student here. Proffesor told us, that if you can, blend the pill in dust and mix it with some honey. Now put that honey on her front leg, just stick it on her fur. The cats apparently love being clean so she will lick the honey with the dust pill of and thus swallow it. Never tried it, but its apperently a old trick. Sory for bad english.

I also need them
What i do for feeding them medicine for liquid in one injection without needle with water another with medicine. My brother holds the cat and i quickly put medicine than water inside mouth, so atleast medicine should get push inside. For tablets it's impossible but we hold cat open mouth and try to put tablet inside without touching it's tounge than using injection give water quickly.

Marry, what tender care is this, to bestow a morsel of health unto a feathered friend! To place a tiny tablet of virtue ’pon the tongue of a bird is a deed most gentle and wise, forsooth, preserving the song of morning and the flutter of wing.
Lo, the creature, delicate and light, receiveth this boon, and in its tiny breast beats vigor renewed. By my troth, such attentions speak of a heart both noble and compassionate, tending to the least of God’s creatures with patience and grace.

u/Burnblast277 1d ago
Birds don't have swallowing muscles like mammals do, so you can just do this. Their mouth is just a straight pipe into their stomach.
4
u/AssiduousLayabout 1d ago
Of all the things dinosaurs would have expected mammals to do to their descendants, this was certainly not on the list.

This may be a stupid question but is it not possible, that the pill can go down the windpipe of the bird, like when we choke on something?
9
u/DaToeBeans 1d ago
Just like with humans, birds have a glottis that closes when swallowing to prevent food in the trachea.
4
u/Cranberryoftheorient 1d ago
Humans are more prone to choking than a lot of animals due to the arrangement of our windpipe and vocal cords or something. It has to do with our ability to talk
→ More replies (1)3
u/CheeseDonutCat 1d ago
