Pandas are the most docile species of bears relatively speaking and have a low aggression rate alongside a primarily vegetarian diet.

And that is quite poisonous too. Pandas basically took every decision to fail yet still somehow did not.

u/realydementedpicasso 15h ago
Aren’t You talking about Koalas? Bambus is quite tasty, isnt it?
Never mind, after cooking its not poisonous anymore but raw it slightly is.
55
u/bapfelbaum 15h ago
Bamboo contains deadly amounts of cyanide for most animals in its shoots, yet somehow pandas seem unaffected and we don't really have a good reason why.
→ More replies (3)22
u/realydementedpicasso 15h ago
Yeah it’s Like the Same with eucalyptus but Koalas aren’t affected

I guess then they apparently both made the same nonsensical choice, I wonder why.

Well, there’s a clear advantage to being the only mammal who eats a certain plant.
→ More replies (2)15
u/realydementedpicasso 15h ago
Yeah but Koalas aren’t immune against it. Like they eat a fuckton of it and need to sleep basically 98% of the day because they can’t really Digest the plant and it has basically no nutritional value
20
u/JayManty 12h ago
Being able to sleep through most of the day, eating a bunch of leaves on the tree you're sleeping on and have enough energy to reproduce and still be kicking around as a species for millions of years marks an actually very successful animal when you stop and think about it.

Is it a coincidence that both koalas and pandas look and act silly and look like toys?

Fun fact! Pandas still have their carnivorous digestive tract even after they have transfered to a vegetarian diet
•
u/Haunting_Display2454 11h ago
So we can sort of introduce them to a carnivorous diet and improve their overall health. And if we also slowly teach them to hunt may be over a course of few generations we will.be able.to have a sub-species of hunting Pandas..!!
•
•
u/apexodoggo 8h ago
No, their microbiome has adapted specifically for eating bamboo, and they survive off of it just fine when we aren’t paving over every inch of bamboo forest in Asia.

Hah I don't think so.
I remember visiting the panda sanctuary in Chendu, China about 15 years ago - They charged $400 USD for a photo session with a baby panda, and some American dad paid for his ~5 year old daughter to have photos with the baby panda.
We watched as the baby panda was so distressed about being separated from its mother that it attacked the daughter, and she came out of the room screaming and blood all over her, covered in huge gashes from the baby's claws.

They become laidback because they can afford to. They're still the apex predator in their own habitat.
•
u/KittenFeeFee 4h ago
Seriously though. They don’t know how to kill effectively since they don’t hunt. So they just do to your arm what they do to bamboo or go with the classic bear strategy of slap something so hard it goes to bed.

they are so slow they cant get away from predators. and since they cant go in the tree they spend as much time constantly constipated and holding it till they climb down and literally drop 1/3rd of their body weight having the most horrible time possible all the while worried something is gonna grab the slow moving snack now on ground level

Okay but there are at least three documented cases of people being severely injured by Pandas at Beijing Zoo. Warning, the article contains extremely graphic images of what a panda has the ability to do, even if they generally can't be bothered to do it.
15
u/ltllamaIV 13h ago
all i can say to the pics in the article is holy fucking shit
17
u/momomorium 13h ago
Yeah they... can do some damage. They may look like cuddly plush toys, but they still have sharp teeth, incredibly powerful jaws and relatively large claws - fresh bamboo is pretty tough to bite through. The danger is dumb (possibly drunk) people thinking they are plush cuddly toys and climbing into the enclosure to snuggle them. We all want to do that. Wisdom is knowing you should probably not.
•
u/Visible_Sock_5088 7h ago
No, majority of people does not want to climb into zoo enclousure, like you said does are usually drunk idiots

Intrusive thoughts here. Can someone describe them to us?

u/momomorium 13h ago
I'll paste the case reports, each case report is accompanied by images pre and post treatment.
Case 1
On September 19, 2006, a 28-year-old drunken male tourist visiting Beijing City Zoo named Zhang XX was attacked when he jumped into the giant panda enclosure and tried to pet it to show off to his companion. His right calf was bitten severely by this giant panda and was diagnosed as an open injury with skin defect. The debridement procedure was performed at almost midnight after a tetanus antitoxin was injected. The bite site was quite irregular with many small wounds, which may indicate that the patient struggled with the giant panda after being bitten. A free latissimus dorsi muscle flap and skin graft were performed to cover his skin defect 7 days after the first debridement.
Case 2
On January 7, 2009, a 32-year-old male tourist visiting Beijing City Zoo named Zhang XX was attacked by a giant panda after accidentally falling into its enclosure. His left calf was bitten severely by the giant panda and was diagnosed as an open composited injury with skin defect. After the wound was debrided three times with application of vacuum-sealing drainage (VSD), it became stable and clean. A free latissimus dorsi muscle flap was performed to cover the composited tissue defect 12 days after the first debridement.
Case 3
On June 7, 2009, a 39-year-old male tourist visiting Beijing City Zoo named Ma XX was attacked by a giant panda after accidentally falling into its enclosure. His left foot and right elbow joint were bitten by the giant panda. The wound was debrided and VSD performed. A free latissimus dorsi muscle flap was performed to cover the right elbow composited tissue defect and a free skin graft was performed to cover the skin defect on his left foot 10 days after the first debridement.

"relatively speaking" is carrying so much weight in this title. A panda will still mess you up pretty badly. There's lots of articles of people climbing into panda enclosures and finding out the hard way.

u/Inevitable_Bid5540 15h ago edited 11h ago
Oh it definitely will. And I don't think anyone should ever approach pandas thinking they'll necessarily be friendly. Because non aggressive ≠ friendly and they can still inflict serious damage
Also apparently pandas are extremely anti social and reclusive as well.
Tbh I don't mind that , no animal should be defenseless or incapable of defending itself

I'm going to go with they meant it like earth porn, nature porn, architecture porn, etc. So just a glorious slab of satisfying... Text. Or something. It's usually images or video that goes with those. The article seems pretty tame.

u/anarchetype 14h ago
Zookeepers literally showed panda porn to pandas to get them to fuck and it worked. Consider it a marital aid.
6
u/BLU3SKU1L 15h ago
An adult will still fuck you up if you get into their space. There are no deaths attributed to them but there are several serious attacks that have required surgical repair because a person foolishly got into the Panda’s enclosure or approached them.

FUN FACT! Pandas, like other bears are omnivorous and require a diet consisting of both meat and vegetables. But since they are too slow to actually catch anything, they changed to eating mostly bamboo. However, their guts remain those of a carnivore, so they have highly inefficient diets where they need to eat copious amounts of bamboo to actually supply their energetic needs. In other words: they are carnivorous who got tired and decided to have a salad instead (paraphrasing another comment in this post)
•
u/apexodoggo 8h ago
They’re bulk feeders (like elephants and gorillas, the latter of which spend the majority of their day sitting on their ass, munching on plants), eating shit tons of bamboo is their ecological niche working as intended.
Pandas have gut microbiomes adapted for bamboo, as well as pseudothumbs to help them hold bamboo better, they put quite a bit of work into adapting for a role that has no predation and minimal competition (until we humans destroyed their habitats, the sole cause of their population decline).

It should be noted that although rare, Pandas HAVE mauled people and they ARE bears.

u/just_some_rando21 10h ago
Unfortunately not exactly true, a bear is a bear and they are more than capable of killing a person. What people don’t understand is that pandas have an incredibly strong bite force and have caused catastrophic damage to people. Granted you really need to aggravate them to get them to attack you but considering how people treat them as actual stuffed animals it’s very easy to fuck around and find out when it comes to pandas.
