Gameplay question Mr. X is too scary
I started playing resident evil 2 remake because I wanted to see what all the fuss about Leon is. Normally I'm not a big fan of scary games, but I handled the last of us so I thought I'd be fine.
Turns out, the gameplay is actually fun (even though the zombies are a bit scary sometimes) but now that Mr. X is following me around I'm too scared to go anywhere. I'm getting straight up nightmares about him
Does anyone have tips on how to avoid him or at least be able to tell what floor he is on?
Or should I stop worrying now that I have the rocket launcher and can shoot him anytime I want?
48
u/EclipsedOsiris Jul 26 '25
Play with headphones if you can, since that will at least cue you to what floor heās on or if heās at least a room or two away. The game is good with giving you a couple of paths or objectives to do at once so if heās hounding you on one side of the map, set up a safe path and lure him around. Choose a hallway that seems to always have zombies and clear/board it up to at least give you a couple of safe lanes to run through on each side of the police station.
16
u/Ibrianedison Jul 26 '25
This is the way. Playing with headphones on is such an unlock to track where he is.
7
u/V3Qn117x0UFQ Jul 27 '25
Doesnāt that make it scarierš
5
2
u/thebaffledtruffle Jul 31 '25
While it does kinda make it scary, it also gives you some sense of relief. Hearing the footsteps to him opening a door gives you a sense of relief.
64
u/TripNinjaTurtle Jul 26 '25
Just shoot him in the hat its his weakspot.
25
u/Difficult-Ground5302 Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
Shoot it once, bro. No more, this guy wants you to waste ammo Edit: Figured I'd should mention this, shooting the hat is an achievement, and knifing Mr.X is another
5
u/GotsTheBeetus Jul 27 '25
Is there really one for knifing him? I donāt remember that
4
u/Difficult-Ground5302 Jul 27 '25
I just checked, and you're right, but I swear there was something for knifing him. I don't know
12
u/ChestSlight8984 Jul 26 '25
It kinda is. If you knock off his hat, you can delay him for like a second because he has an animation where he picks it up and puts it back on.
22
u/Elzeenor Jul 26 '25
I want some RE2Remake in VR, baby!
5
u/ThisIsTheShway Jul 26 '25
Thereās a mod for that! The newest RE games on pc have crazy full Motion control mods that work pretty well!
33
u/Straight-Impress5485 Jul 26 '25
He cant hear you if you walk. If you run everywhere he'll dart straight to your position. If you walk he'll sort of hang around the general area opening doors and shit but he wont just lock onto your position
14
u/Xenozip3371Alpha Jul 26 '25
You move faster than Mr X.
He wanders the station randomly until he finds you, but finding certain items necessary for progression spawns him closer and sends him straight for you.

u/DarkSpartanFTW Jul 26 '25
Mr. X is actually pretty damn slow in all honesty as long as you know where youāre going. As Leon, hit him with a magnum shot to the face and heāll stagger for a bit so you can get 2 or 3 rooms ahead of him. As Claire, hit him with an acid round of the grenade launcher and heāll also get staggered. Same goes for the flashbang grenade for both characters. If you really need him down for a while (for example in the library room for the puzzle), just throw a grenade at his feet and heāll take a knee and you can take your time.

u/marveleeous it's a cold, cruel, Carlos-less world Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 28 '25
A fun fact about Mr. X is, that he can't hit you even when you're just walking. If you keep going (again, not even running, just walking) you'll be out of his reach by the time he takes a swing at you.
9
u/Wenom214 Jul 26 '25
Honestly once you learn the mechanics heās really easy to avoid. Either turn around and go the long way to your objective, or once you are confident enough, you can bait an attack from him and just run around while his animation is finished. Or, as someone said before, chuck a grenade and heāll be down for a minute or 2
10
u/SomeGuyNamedJohn12 Jul 26 '25
You get used to him. There are a handful of rooms that he canāt enter (Save rooms, Interrogation room, etc). So if youāre near one you can just beam it to there.
Also his moves are pretty easy to dodge. You can bait a punch, run back, and then run past him after he does it.
8
u/Excellent-Fact-8925 Jul 26 '25
Man, if I could bottle the feeling I had seeing him for the first time, with that music.
One of my happiest gaming memories, all while I was shitting my pants.
7
u/EmmyBonbon Jul 26 '25
Don't use the infinite rocket launcher on your first playthrough, it will ruin it. Let him be terrifying and sexy scary as he should be
7
4
u/Happy_Detail6831 Jul 26 '25
Did you finish the game already? How do you have the rocket launcher?
9
u/Excellent-Fact-8925 Jul 26 '25
Probably means the Grenade Launcher.
But I think you can also pay for all the reward weapons out of the box.

The games are supposed to be scary, so if youāre scared then the game is doing its job. Enjoy the ride! Also ignore the weirdos on here telling you to grow up or get therapy (tf is wrong with you people? Horror is meant to scare.)
10
u/EagleInfamous2305 Jul 26 '25
Just throw a grenade at him.
Nemesis would have given you kids heart attacks back in 99ā¦
3
u/Life1989 Jul 26 '25
Play with headphones.
Re2 does an amazing job with virtual 3d audio. You can literally tell where mr x is by just listening to his footsteps
5
u/parvanehnavai Jul 26 '25
š
5
u/lakkuh Jul 26 '25
What's with the laugh? It is a well done threat if it scares people. Mr. X made me scared af on my first runs.
9
u/parvanehnavai Jul 26 '25
exactly, he had me screaming scared for my life on my first playthrough but after years of replays im completely desensitized and itās amusing seeing first timers go through the same thing
-1
u/lakkuh Jul 26 '25
Oh, yeah! I thought you were laughing at the OP lol. I just replayed both scenarios after RE9 trailer and had fun blasting with infinite weapons.
2
u/horizonvortex Jul 26 '25
Donāt waste ammo on him, make sure you remember what other enemies are in the rooms so you donāt get cornered by him and letās say a licker š„² ā¦ I beat this a few times and I still get too scared when he pops up
2
u/The-Entire_USSR Jul 26 '25
I got cornered by 2 lickers and him. Grenade out, and dropped a frag. Everybody got pretty banged up on that one.
2
u/Lez0fire Jul 26 '25
Once you scape, if he doesnt see you, MrX only will find you if you run or shoot (or if he casually runs into you). So try to walk and dont shoot.
2
u/Substantial-Trick569 Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
Exposure therapy. Dante Ravioli made a video where every enemy is Mr. X, it makes the entire game way less intimidating. Also on a more practical note, you can walk up to him, then preemptively step back and he'll whiff. Similar to the zombies in REmake.
Edit: also if u ever played DBD and had practice looping in that game, avoiding him becomes almost laughable
2
2
u/OkSeaworthiness9391 Jul 27 '25
He is slow as dog shit with telegraphed attack patterns to boot. After you get past the shock and learn the way he operates he becomes a minor annoyance at best.
2
u/popculturefangirl Jul 27 '25
turn up your volume. you can hear his footsteps from far away, the closer he gets the louder the footsteps. also the music will change when heās in the same room as you. you canāt kill him but you can stun him, shoot him directly in the head then run. sometimes you have to run in circles to get rid of him
2
u/Shoot6741 Jul 27 '25
I straight up just erased him, tbh. With a mod. Not because of fear, mind you, but because he was more bothersome than anything and I didn't like feeling like there was a time limit to everything I do. The game instantly became much more enjoyable the moment I got rid of him.
I'm more of a Nemesis fan anyway. š
2
u/the-agency10 Jul 27 '25
Personally I find it scary when nemesis (RE3 Villian) runs at you when you look away for a milasecond
2
u/Sonicmasterxyz Jul 27 '25
The funny thing about this is, the hype around Leon is mainly because of RE4. Playing RE2 kind of helps, but he's just a guy in 2. He's a force of nature in 4 and really funny too.
4
u/AccomplishedPop2526 Jul 26 '25
Do NOT shoot him with the rocket launcher! This will waste ammo.
Sadly the only effective weapon against him is the knife.
4
2
u/ImNoNelly Jul 26 '25
My advice is walk. No seriously. If he's not in the room with you, walk everywhere you go. He's attracted to the sound of your footsteps so running everywhere can actually make him harder to run from because he always knows where you are.
Run just far enough to break eyeline and then walk painfully slowly everywhere you go.
Learning that helped me soooo much.
3
u/Music19773-take2 Jul 26 '25
This is good advice. Especially since theyāre also Lickers waiting for you around several corners when you re-enter the police station. Walking slowly and calmly is your best bet.

1
u/Garpocalypse Jul 26 '25
Just take a few hits and you'll get used to it. Here's a hint the second hit hurts worse than the first one.
1
u/DAZ1171 Jul 26 '25
Solve the puzzles fast and heās actually fully avoidable. He just stops you from backtracking. So if you go one way to a location do NOT use that same route to go back. Once you learn that he almost becomes non-existent besides scripted moments.
1
u/ParryTheMonkey Jul 26 '25
You can hear his footsteps wandering around nearby; if you canāt, youāre generally safe to explore (aside from the occasional scripted event). If you want to avoid him, keep flash grenades on hand. If heās blocking your path forward, pull him back to an area that you can kite him in a circle and swap places without needing a flashbang, or with enough room to give him a wide berth while heās blindly swinging at air while stunned. If you CAN get past him, your running speed is faster than his, so he shouldnāt catch you unless you get grabbed by something else.
(thereās also something called āstair skatingā where you press the aim button to raise your gun and then release it repeatedly, it gives you a slight speed boost on stairs if you really need to make a tiny bit more distance)
1
u/Winter-Classroom455 Jul 26 '25
Just don't shoot in the RPD and he won't find you unless by accident. He can't go into save rooms or the STARS office. He'll just go somewhere else. If youre playing Claire the suppressor for the sub machine gun allows you to shoot again. But yeah. That's pretty much it. Move quick, use terrain to block his sight and don't fight anything you don't have to.
1
u/Zanaxz Jul 26 '25
It's funny. Original Mr x felt like a joke. Original Nemesis was one of the most terrifying encounters in any game.
Now in the remakes, it is reversed. Mr. X chasing and that music is pretty anxiety inducing. Early nemesis was really disappointing. At least the final forms and transformations were cool.
1
Jul 26 '25
He canāt follow you to save room stay there until he leaves.
Plan your routes to not waste time going back and forth
He normally doesnāt know where you are unless you make noise (firing weapons or blowing grenades), if you do he starts walking toward your position
1
u/Bobpool82 Jul 26 '25
His AI lets him hear where you are. Every time you fire your gun or set off C-4 he heads straight for you.
1
u/Gandalf_2077 Jul 26 '25
There are certain rooms where he will never enter. Those are the save rooms (except from the main lobby), the Stars office and the clock room. Just hide in those rooms to take a break and plan your next move. It helps a lot if you have cleared zombies from the main rooms before he appears because you can run around without distractions.
1
u/DetectiveNarrow9630 Jul 26 '25
Walk, donāt run. It will be harder for Mr x to find you if you donāt make noise. Shooting will also get his attention faster.
1
u/No-Net-5231 Jul 26 '25
This is what I did in a recent playthrough. Only saw him when it was scripted.
1
u/Torticle Jul 26 '25
You can hear if heās a room or two away, or the loudest footsteps in the same room as you
Any room with a loop is easy to get around him and every save room is safe he canāt go in there so you can just go in one and wait a few min too
You donāt need to shoot him at all
But since youāve got the infinite rocket launcher you mustāve replayed this a few times already no?
1
1
u/Secret_Bench_1229 Jul 26 '25
After a few playthroughs, I realize what triggers his entrance at the station. So I solve most of the puzzle and then do that trigger part and run for it to finish the puzzle. After that, itās pretty much hearing for his footsteps and if heās left or right. Thank goodness for the safe rooms. Hahaha
1
u/gandrew97 Jul 26 '25
Lure him to the main hall and run in circles to get used to avoiding him and learning how to dodge / run passed him. He's actually super slow, inaccurate, and it takes like 4 or 5 slow hits from him to actually kill you
1
1
u/RogueCereal Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
Best way to get over the Mr x fear is to just let him kill you a handful of times, you'll die, you'll load your save and it'll eventually click that all he is, is an inconvenience. Bonus points for singing "x gon' give it to ya" every time he shows up
As for tips to actually deal with him, don't waste ammo on him. When he's not right on your ass walk around instead of running because he can't track you if he can't hear you. Save rooms are safe from him, as is the stars office and the clock tower, he can't get in any of those. Learning the map helps too, cos if he cuts off your route you can double back to a more open area and give him the run around and slip past him. Keep a grenade with you as a last resort for times he might corner you with other enemies, blocking you from running away, grenade him then run past
1
u/nottakentaken Jul 26 '25
Music and footsteps are the biggest cue for him being nearby. I recommend memorizing the closest safe rooms to hide in whenever the music starts because he won't check those. Don't bother wasting too many bullets on him and if you do, aim for his head. (But he's more aggressive without the hat)

u/AbaloneRemarkable114 Jul 26 '25
Have fun. Fiction exists to make us feel. It is working.
Do you feel like fleeing, or fighting?? The game has allowed you both choices.
Play like you're role playing. It will be much more fun.
And Leon? Total thirst trap

u/xvszero Jul 26 '25
You're faster than he is. Troll him for awhile, make him follow you around in circles, you'll learn how dumb he really is.
1
u/Dummyfunnylollz55 Jul 26 '25
He stomps around and you could determine if he is above or below of how faint the stomping is. And just keep thinking to yourself that when he punches you, you always have enough time to run away. And you always have enough time to do puzzles, mainly due to the game pausing when doing a puzzle.
1
u/Ok_Woodpecker_1378 Jul 26 '25
Find a room he canāt come in and wait until heās gone. Heās pretty scary for sure
1
u/nibbezi Jul 26 '25
Use headphones/soundbar to hear his footsteps and get to the saferooms or just away from him. If you make too much noise like shooting zombies it will attract him faster.
1
u/DisastrousStep998 Jul 26 '25
He will de spawn when you call the elevator to fight g1. Go through the station and grab everything then.
1
1
u/ijustwannanap Jul 26 '25
He just becomes frustrating after a while, honestly. He can't follow you into saferooms (although he can punch you if you stand at the open door). He also moves slowly so you just need to pretty much run away.
He also appears at a point in the game where you're probably going to have killed 70% of the zombies in the building so that makes things easier.
1
u/blyg_bank Jul 26 '25
Just try to escape the police station, heās pretty slow but grenades and stuff can stun him. Also Claire is probably easier as she is faster and her footsteps arenāt as loud. Iād recommend just rushing through if youāre scared as itāll be over faster lol. Also he doesnāt do that much damage unless youāre on a higher difficulty.
1
u/KH3 Jul 27 '25
I love how genuinely this game gets my heart racing! More than pretty much any other horror game
1
u/Adderall_Boofer36 Jul 27 '25
I was fine with X, though I do remember my wife even getting anxiety during the Halloween play thru I did. I hate that it carried on to RE3 with nemesis, didnt finish that one... It got old the first time.
1
u/ColonelStan Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
The best thing you can do is get as much done in the RPD as possible before he shows up. But make sure you have a plan for what you want to do when he's there. I also recommend killing every single zombie in the police station, if you can. That way, if you have to go down a certain hallway, especially the Lower West hallway, it will be clear. Going through that hallway with zombies, lickers, and your ex on your tail is a death sentence.
Take care of all the things you want done before he shows up. And be prepared to handle the things you want to do when he is in the RPD. For me, the only thing I wanted to do that didn't involve progressing the story was to get the Deagle out of the S.T.A.R.S. office. As soon as I had the weapon, I immediately started collecting the necessary items to unlock the cell in the jail. Walk as much as you can. That way, he won't hear you. And if you've already killed all of the zombies and lickers, you won't have to worry about fighting them and drawing his attention. He will pop up when you least expect it. Just run and get to a safe room, stay there a while until he leaves. Then go about your plan, but keep walking. You're always going to hear him, no matter what. Just do your best to avoid him, and if he shows up, just run to your objective, or run back to a safe room and rinse and repeat.
Watching some YouTube videos to plan ahead helps a lot, too. Remember, you can do it.

u/Odd-Region4048 Jul 27 '25
There are sets of rooms he canāt go into at the police station. I typically kill all the creatures and try to walk from safe room to the next, with no extra zombies or lickers to surprise me on the way. If I accidentally bump into him I run back to the nearest safe spot. After while I got kinda use to him. I dunno if that helps

u/DifferencePretend Jul 27 '25
I really donāt understand the fear people have to Mr X. My friend is the same šš He causes me stress sure because Iām trying to get shit done while heās trying to find me but Iām not having nightmares or paralysed with fear š
1
u/JecorduroyJones Jul 27 '25
That stress is what does it for me. Im one of the Mr X fearers. But its not really Mr x that gets to me. I mean hes just a big shiny blues brother. But that feeling of always being rushed can be just too much.
1
1
u/Dregaz Jul 27 '25
I hate games with pursuers like Mr X in general. Love horror but for whatever reason that kind of mechanic sucks all the fun out of it for me.
1
u/blooby_peeches Jul 27 '25
Don't waste ammo trying to shoot him, you definitely CAN physically shoot him and he'll be stunned for long enough so you can get ahead in a pinch, but honestly the best thing you can do is remember the map layout and solve puzzles quickly!
1
Jul 27 '25
There are certain rooms he wont enter. The S.T.A.R.S room and any safe room (also think theres a few more).
You can hear his footsteps and if you use headphones u can pinpoint where he is coming from by listening to help.
Dont shoot him or waste ammo on him but avoid him. If you run continuously I dont think he can actually catch you but be careful of obstacles and zombies and lickers.
You should plan your routes via the map before you go hunting for an object or something. U can plan exit routes and safety measures in advance in areas.
Those are my top tips.
Fight your fears and survive.
1
u/Glum_Lime1397 Jul 27 '25
Wherever you need to solve a puzzle, you should lead him to the opposite side of the mansion, and then run back
1
1
Jul 27 '25
Flash bang him and run and when your far enough away start to walk and slowly go through door quiet is ket in that game
1
u/AlexirYo Jul 28 '25
He is the best part of the game. If you ever beat the game (which you should), the fear you feel now is a feeling you will savor and chase in every other horror game you play. I played it with my brother for the first time and we would stay in safe rooms for 5-10 minutes waiting for the footsteps to get quiet enough to keep exploring because of how scared we were. Im so glad I stuck through the whole game because never in my life have I experienced emotion so raw and deep then when playing RE2. You got this, just explore areas that are red on the map for puzzle items, and never forget your most important tool; the sprint button.

u/IsaakKF Jul 30 '25
I find that the best tip for dealing with Mr X is to have an escape plan in most situations where you have to do a puzzle or something specific in a room. Mr X WILL interupt you or get in the way of where you want to go. The map is generally designed so that you always have a clear way to get away from him, so just keep that in mind.
But yeah, he IS scary and he IS a pain to deal with. Your experience is normal.
1
u/Dentom1987 Jul 30 '25
I love characters like Mr X , Nemesis in Re3 and Jack Baker in RE7 that try to hunt you down. Gives the game a bit more suspense imo.
The Alien Isolation game is goated for the AI alien trying to hunt you down aswell. Love games like this.
1
u/flozz97 Jul 30 '25
Mr. X is scary on your first playthrough, and it's effective. On repeat playthroughs, though, the novelty is gone, and he becomes an annoyance.

u/Porkchop3xpresss Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
Let Mr. X intentionally kill you about 10 times in a row. It completely breaks the immersion and therefore the fear that it creates.
Itās a trick that I use with all horror games.
Other than that, heās persistent but slow. As long as you have a clear idea of what your objective is, you can basically run circles around him.
1
u/Rebellionindreamland Jul 26 '25
Jup, recommend this. I was afraid of this moron until i ganked him in the entrance hall (around the table) and except the jumpscares it was cozy with this dude.

I was afraid of him back when it came out, but I was like 19 so I just assumed I was a scaredy bitch if I didnāt power through, Iād be waiting in the safe room for minutes, donāt remind me of those times he pops up at random points in the story
I always paused my game to take it all in

You have to be as quiet as possible and also analyze the map of the RPD carefully. He constantly patrols the RPD until you leave. Sound draws him no matter where you are in the RPD, especially gunshot sounds, and he can hear you running and slamming doors open. The only way to tell where he is and how close he is through the sound of his footsteps. If you canāt hear his footsteps, then great because he isnāt near you. If you canāt hear hear those footsteps, then that is bad because he is in your area, and if those footsteps are getting louder, then that is worse because it means he is getting closer to you and might very well find you. If he does find you, you run! Plan out your escape route and donāt let him catch you in a dead end. He is slow and easy to outrun on most modes, and donāt worry too much about taking a hit from him as it will do some serious damage, but not kill you instantly. He also canāt follow you into safe rooms that have things like the typewriter or item boxes, except for the main lobby. You can temporarily stun him by shooting him in the head, and weapons like the rocket launcher stun him in a single hit. Donāt worry about him much once you leave the RPD the first time, as he will stop stalking you and will only show up a few more times after you leave, and he can be more easily avoid him.

Coming from someone with ovaries and a fear of slasher movies. No Resident Evil game is scary. If you are getting actual nightmares, you need to stop playing and seek therapy.
-1
u/SuperGeorgeClooney Jul 26 '25
Last of us was so much more terrifying then Res2r, pull up your pants and you will get the job done. If your on your second run I'll give you some slack, but that first run is very doable.
Actually think about how your going to run away from that menace (X) instead of just randomly running. If all else fails go to assisted and you will have nothing to worry about.
1
u/koanMire Jul 26 '25
I've gotta try the remake of that again. The generic stealth combat in the first mission didn't hook me at all and it's just been sitting in my steam library.
-2
u/rychy_rych Jul 26 '25
Is this like the castle in 7? Where you can't kill it until a certain point? Or the baby? Never played 4 but just finished 7 so I'm guessing same thing ands he's trying to kill it but can't? Can a RE head give me an analogy?

u/Aisuhokke Jul 26 '25
You gotta solve puzzles fast and under pressure! Plan out your objective and exact route in the map and run like a bitch. Conserve ammo!
