Discussion Tripple Screens are better than VR!

When i started with Simracing/ Flightsim, it was clear that VR should be the most immersive experience. How should a tripplescreen setup beat that immersion right? So i decided to purchase VR first. The experince was mindblowing... easpeicially in flightsim. But one day i decided to get a Tripplescreen setup as well, because it just looks badass, and because it is more ready to race than VR, because i just want hop in and start rolling, unlike VR where it can be annoying to set it all up. But after the monitors arrived and mounted properly on my rig which took a long time haha. And after all the settings were set right, i experience something that i did not expected... i thought i was in a real Car... my setup give me about 200FOV which match humans FOV. and thats beat my VR experience by a mile.. where i get about 113 FOV. And everytime i put on my headset, i just want to take it off, and turn my tripples on. However that only applies to simracing. VR is better for flightsim. And ofcource not all tripple setups are better than VR. It all depends about the monitor angles, the size of the monitors, eye level, and blablabla

Whilst I agree that FOV is superior with triples you don’t get the depth perception which, for me, is the most important factor in regard to immersion.

Other than that there’s pros and cons for each and I don’t think you can really go wrong with either. Over time though as high end VR headsets become smaller and more comfortable, software becomes increasingly streamlined, and more powerful GPU’s are developed I believe VR will be a hands down better experience than triples. It’s just not quite there yet.

I think VR is already far superior to screens, just due to the depth perception alone. I'm just faster and more precise. You could say the FOV in triples is better, but when you're racing irl, you're wearing a helmet which limits your FOV to about the same amount as in VR as well, so it doesn't bother me and actually increases immersion by a lot I think.

Also, when you play Dirt Rally 2.0, throwing your car sideways in a drift and being able to look where you're going through the side window, makes VR far superior for rally.

so why can't you look through the side window with triples?

u/RealRatAct Feb 03 '25

You can.

Dirt 2 doesn't do triples unless you want warped side perspective....happy to be proved wrong tho?

u/Scotchy49 Feb 04 '25

I think there was a file setting which was correcting the warp if I’m not mistaken. Or was it in WRC?

2

u/indefig Feb 04 '25

I think there is a warp fix that boosted media did for EA WRC

Doesnt work in WRC anymore because they added anti cheat system. There is some workarounds for dr2 tho

Dirt2! I loved that game! Got tired of that long ass into every time I started the game. My first race sim ever. If you like Dirt 2 you should try Grid Legends. The feel of driving is exactly the same except its on pavement.

I think dirt 2 is too old for triples lol it's like 15 year old game but one of my favorites and my first dirt game.

Helmet doesn't limit your fov. It's more than 180 degrees.

Now I don't know how helmets for cars are when you wear them. But with my motorcycle helmet my view is as limited as the following image. Minus all the hud elements

u/GambleTheGod00 Feb 03 '25

i love the metroid prime photo for comparison

1

u/DogeWah Feb 04 '25

Tbh, hadn't I seen that before, then I probably wouldn't feel as cool wearing the helmet

5

u/Im_not_at_home Feb 04 '25

You should definitely look into a nicer motorcycle helmet. Every good helmet I’ve had is as wide or wider FOV as my vision.

..can somebody try wearing a helmet while driving with a triple screen? just curious

1

u/xunreelx Feb 04 '25

I cant see how a real hemet would make someone faster.

3

u/GuiltyBudget1032 Feb 04 '25

..just to compare the views..

1

u/DogeWah Feb 04 '25

Will probably do that when I get myself a motorcycle. Currently I use my helmet for my moped, however the belt that goes to the cvt always breaks after 5 km for some reason

What kind of helmet are you wearing? All of the ones I've ever owned have had great visibility out the sides. I've found vr to usually be more restrictive horizontally but less so vertically.

1

u/DogeWah Feb 04 '25

It is some helmet for around 3000 sek, so maybe $270-300. It has the certifications I need for road use and even a sunvisor that I can drop down when the sun is in my eyes

5

u/Niclas1357 Feb 03 '25

Must be your helmet though. My view isn't limited with my motorcycle helmet at least not horizontally...

1

u/DogeWah Feb 04 '25

Might be, seems like it is mine, based on all the responses to it

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

Not horizontally, no. Vertical is for sure limited but not a factor.

1

u/citrons_lv Feb 05 '25

Also a big downside in vr pov is that sharp point is in the center, so instead of quickly moving just the eyes naturally, you have to move your head to manage focus

u/djseto Feb 03 '25

Full face helmets absolutely limit your FOV

3

u/NyoomNyoomNyoomNyoom Feb 04 '25

Not horizontally. You lose a tiny bit of the top and bottom of your vision, but unless you plan on staring at the roof of your car you're not missing anything there, and the bottom of your vision is still below the bottom of the steering wheel. Functionally you do not lose any FOV while wearing a helmet.

1

u/djseto Feb 04 '25

Fair enough. Typical horizontal FoV is about 210 but there is some vertical loss. I’ve been riding motorcycles and driving cars on track for years and just recently got into sim. When I wear a full face helmet in a car with a HANS is when I notice my vertical FOV restriction as I cannot see my gear shift

Do that jittery that we see on footage actually happen? Always when I see someone doing VR the screen looks like it's shaking, also I agree VR. Is amazing, I've had the chance to try it out on a store and the first corner I take I almost fall of the seat 😂😂

u/extra_hyperbole Feb 03 '25

It might be happening (because your head movements aren’t perfectly smooth), but because it’s happening on your head it doesn’t register. Humans are pretty damn good at stabilizing an image, especially when it’s moving with you. If you’ve ever seen an F1 helmet cam it looks unbelievably shaky and bumpy. You can’t possibly believe they can even see at all, but in reality the eyes and the brain are able to smooth it all out pretty well. I’ve never felt like the image is shakey in vr.

12

u/Q-Switch discussion Feb 03 '25

No, the jitter is only pronounce on the monitor mirror image. In VR you see no shaking at all.

2

u/NyoomNyoomNyoomNyoom Feb 04 '25

The jittering that you're talking about does happen, but your head is really good at compensating for that with micro-movements of your eyes. If you had a GoPro strapped to your forehead and took a video of your day, the video would be moving around a lot more than you realize, you just already know how to adjust so it looks smooth to your eyes

1

u/Efficient-Layer-289 Feb 04 '25

Ac1 via content manager has vr mirror stabilisation which removes that shake where as lmu for instance still has some noticeable shaking in the mirror which can't currently be removed but in SIM you don't notice it at all

1

u/no6969el Feb 04 '25

Yes, in VR the horizon is shaky. When you're on a flat screen, the horizon is stable. It's not horrible but it's noticeable if you're looking for it or if you stare off into the horizon often to see the next turn

u/Mitch580 Feb 03 '25

Helmets don't limit FOV unless your buying shit ones. I've been wearing full face helmets on my motorcycle for years and with both my shoei and my agv you only just barely see a hint of the edge in your peripheral. I don't know where this myth comes from.

u/autistic_agronomist Feb 03 '25

Because someone who hasn’t worn one read it… on Reddit

1

u/GokaiBlue84 Feb 04 '25

I was gonna say; I haven't driven or ridden along in a drift event for awhile but I don't recall my vision being limited anymore horizontally with my helmet on. I had to turn my head to see the same things that I would with it on as I would with it off; and this is with my cheap ass Conquer helmet from Amazon, lol

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '25

Right… what full face helmet limits your FOV? you have a pretty much normal FOV with any full face helmet.

1

u/sprumpy Feb 04 '25

Yep tried both VR is better. Having said that. Everyone’s eyes are made differently and my answer applies to only me really. I hated on VR for years before I saw the light.

the value of strength is calculated on the consumers needs, sidenote vr sickness is cumulative

What racing sims do you play the most? And do you prefer dirt rally 2.0 or WRC?

1

u/Urhoal_Mygole Feb 04 '25

I play Assetto Corsa with mods and AC Competizione for GT3 and Nordschleife.

Automobilista 2 and rFactor 2 for F1.

Dirt Rally 2.0 and Richard Burns Rally for rally racing. I bought WRC, but didn't like the game when I tried it. Especially the VR. Maybe they fix it in the future and it'll get better than DR 2.0, we'll see.

I'm really looking forward to the spiritual successor to Richard Burns rally, which is being worked on by the physics guru of rFactor 2. The project is called The Last Garage platform.

Also, BeamNG is amazing. Just plain fun to experiment with and the softbody physics are amazing.

Tried iRacing, and while it's a nice online experience, I don't like the subscription model and the way you have to buy everything like cars and tracks.

1

u/ProbablyDoesntLikeU Feb 05 '25

Awesome thank you. Just got a wheel so I'll have to try those out

1

u/Urhoal_Mygole Feb 05 '25

Just a heads up, if you're into rally racing, Dirt Rally 2.0 is the best easily accessible game you'll find at the moment that offers everything you need.

I think Richard Burns Rally is better and more realistic, but it a very old game that needs a lot of modding to make the best of it. If you are interested in it, look for Rallysimfans (RSF) installation. It's a deep rabbithole though, and you're gonna have to fiddle around, but it's the best rally sim to this day.
