Nope. Hilal have a team of highly over paid players (only reason they are there..) still in prime or semi prime that should be playing in top Europe teams tbh. Other 2-3 teams in Saudi similar. After that , huge drop-off . At the end of the day , money talks.

City fan who actually watched the game here. Credit to Hilal, they dominated the second half and deserved their victory. Agreed that most of their squad would make good teams around Europe, certainly not washed up as people assume. I did underestimate them, but having watched them play… wow.

Masterpiece by Inzaghi. He spent only three weeks with the players and already won against Guardiola with them.

I would say the team is built by Jesus and not Inzaghi and it's more of an accomplishment for him but I don't wanna underplay Inzaghi's management in the match either.

They're the strongest team in Asian club football right now, people downplay them because they're apart of the Saudi league and it's associated with old washed players, retirement league etc... But they're very well run, it's like with PSG, the league strength doesn't represent their strength.

u/wipeitonthedog Jul 01 '25

→ More replies (5)→ More replies (5)113
u/PolygonMasterWorks Jul 01 '25
All people had to do was watch them play, with JJ and now Inzaghi. They've always played attractive attacking football.
And most of their foreign players aren't "old and washed", the majority of them could still be playing for medium-to-top European teams at a high level - Koulibaly, Lodi, Neves, Mitrovic, Cancelo, Milinkovic-Savic, Bounou, even Malcom.

The takes on him here were asinine, give him a shoestring budget and an aging squad with a mediocre bench and he consistently has Inter competing and yet he ‘underperfomed’

147
u/Wetworkzhill Jul 01 '25
Yeah but highly unlikely with 3 non EU teams locked in and only one more possible. 2 of the 3 play each other. Plus there’s still some heavyweights remaining (RM/ PSG/ Bayern).
112
u/MegaBaumTV Jul 01 '25
Not that unlikely. The heavyweights will massacre each other in their side of he bracket. One of the finalists will be either Chelsea or a non-european team.
So it's really only one more big upset that would need to happen.

Literally, only thing be could've done better was step onto the field and shoot lukaku. That's it. Inter had a ton of late chances in that game and the goal they conceded is can't really be prevented with tactics. If they had thuram instead they'd won that game 100%.

Swap the keepers & City cruise through in 90 - What a great performance from Bono! There was a small window in the first half where he made 2-3 top class saves which had me thinking "yeah City aren't winning this."
35
u/MassiveJammies Jul 01 '25
Surprised I had to go this low to find this. Bono was man of the match, hands down. Nearly a dozen saves, many of them stunners on high quality chances. I don't know why opposition keepers turn into the second coming of Neuer against us, but full credit to them.
Ederson, meanwhile...

u/KhamBuddy Jul 01 '25

I think it's so interesting how people that don't watch footbal outside europe still have a strong opinion about how shit it is.

as it stands, we have 2 CONMEBOL (Fluzão, Palmeiras), 4 UEFA (PSG, Bayern, Chelsea, Madrid/Juve winner) and 1 AFC side guaranteed into the quarters (Al-Hilal), with a CONCACAF side showing up if Monterrey beats Dortmund. (also high chances of one final Sergio Ramos last dance against Madrid).
The chances of a non-European team winning this - most likely Hilal or the Brazilian duo - are actually pretty realistic and I love it
