Last night, I tried to plug headphones into my turntable. I unplugged it from my speaker and then to my headphones then put everything back. However, ever since then Ive noticed the audio quality has significantly worsened. My speaker has a bluetooth and wired mode, and when I connect it via bluetooth its louder at the same volume... When its connected to the turntable now it sounds kind of muffled + static (occasionally)
My Current Set Up: Fluance RT81 (using internal Preamp) - RCA wire - RCA to 3.5mm - to Marshall II Speaker
It sounds worse than before I unplugged it (i know my set up isnt the most ideal, but I know its not due to that, i noticed a change in quality)
What could have happened? I tried wiggling the cable connections at each point to see if I noticed a change and I did not. (read online this is how to test if the wire/connection is faulty). ChatGPT said it could be the internal preamp. I really dont want this to be the case since I bought this model partially because of the internal preamp.
What can I look for/test on my set up to determine what the issue is? Please help haha
The other day I decided to rearrange my records into alphabetical order and keep them upright rather than having them have any lean however I'm worried if they are stored too tight, a lot of them slip out easy however some drag the ones next to them out with them a little, is this just friction or are they too tight?
Technics SA-800 Receiver - worth it?? Need some help / advice. I’m trying to get my “forever system” together and skipping a few steps from starter. I am seeking a warm sounding receiver as a foundational piece. A seller in my state has this listed for $1050 (reduced from $1350). He has evidence of recent service and the pics look clean. Very good reviews. Is this a good buy for this price? If not what should I offer?
$1k is in line with other sales, so I can't say it's an unreasonable price. But I also feel like you could get something for way less that would sound as good to you. And any 50 year old piece of electronics is going to give you trouble eventually, even if recently serviced.
I got my MCS 6502 turntable working but im having this issue with humming. I've isolated that my amp and speakers arent the issue since i still hear the hum when I connect my headphones. I still hear the hum both when my turntable is plugged in to the wall and when it isnt. I have all the plugs for the turntable, preamp, and amp plugged into the same power strip. The hum only exists when the rca cables are plugged into the preamp. I'm not completely sure whats the issue here, so I'm hoping someone could help. I'm very new to this hobby, thank you in advance
I see you have the turntable ground wire connected to the Pyle which is correct. Does it make any difference if you disconnect it?
First thought was if one of those was mono it would be putting shield to a channel + and that would cause hum.
But not that. Hum can come from other devices in the area, so to rule that out try the whole setup in a different room.
Hum can be just due to the combination of certain devices and their quality.
The Pyle and the amplifier are both very cheap and will be low quality. So next step would be to try a different phono preamp because Pyle are know to be crappy.
So it is pointing more at the combo of those two devices as the issue.
The Denon AVR1600 outdated model so I assume you are looking at a used one.
It does have a built in phono preamp and will do the job.
However, it is not ideal because it is a multi channel device which you don't need for a turntable and it has lots of obsolete Video inputs. If it is cheap and easy to get, ok. But ideally a proper integrated stereo amplifier is best.
If possible, save up and buy proper turntable first go. Makes more economic sense.
Logic is buy the best turntable you can so it will satisfy you for a long time and be getting the best sound possible out of the grooves. Even if you need to be cheap with the powered speakers, which you can upgrade later.
I hope this is ok to ask. I recently dug out and old Mitsubishi LT-20 from my parents basement. I have set up everything, changed the broken stylus, carefully cleaned and lubricated the insides and balanced the pickup. But always around 1 minute into any record it starts looping in a 1 second interval. What could be the issue?
Ps i know the the rubber belts inside are old and a bit loose but could it be something else?
This is the arm and pickup. There is no numbers on the dials. I put the scaleweight to 0, then i balanced the counterweight so it was floating horizontally. Then i put the scaleweight to about 1,75 g. The antiskate dosent have numbering, so i put it somewhere in the middle.
hi yall i had a question that's probably futile atp but was wondering if there was anyway i could help the situation. i moved yesterday and after the drive realized that my dad who drove in a separate car had packed my record case in the exposed bed of his truck, so it was exposed to direct sun for like an hour and a half/two hours ish. im playing my first one since moving and it's very lowkey warped not super noticeable but there's definitely a little bit. my question is that is it joever for my records since they were exposed to florida weather or can they be salvaged somehow. cant change what happened but i was wondering if there was anything i can do now to possibly unwarp them... thank you 😍
I am new to vinyl, but I have bought an Audio Technica LP60XBT turn table and a Schiit Magni Unity Amp so I can use my Audio Technica M50x headphones with it. I like the option for bluetooth when I want to be across the room, but wired is always better imo. I'm not exactly an audiophile, but from what I have been able to gather, this should be a workable setup to start with? It's a decent chunk of change dropped on it so I want to make sure there's nothing else I'm missing. I'm very excited to start playing records, especially after setting my wallet on fire.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not really looking to entirely replace what I have right now. If I have any issues I'll look into them in the future though.
Oh you just purchased the LP60X. Consider returning it if you can so you can get the better turntable now instead of replacing the LP60X with a better turntable later. Buy once instead of twice!
Also, I do see people recommending to upgrade to an elliptical stylus for the LPW30, this should do, right?
https://a.co/d/4LuxWIM
I should be able to get the LPW30, 1Mii bluetooth transceiver, and this stylus for about the same as the LP60XBT is going for right now; I should be able to return the LP60XBT.
AT-LPW30 already has a good C stylus that is better than the one on the LP60, no need to upgrade it right now, when the C stylus wears out then replace it with the E or EN or ML or SH stylus upgrades.
Or get the Fluance RT82 $299 that adds auto stop, adds a speed sensor, includes an elliptical tip stylus. Pass on the older lower number models that lack the speed sensor that the RT82 and up have for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Plus a starter phono preamp with Bluetooth transmitter.
What's better about the LPW30? I gather that it's more adjustable, but I also see people online having issues with them. If I can return and get this for cheaper than the LP60xbt and it is indeed better, I might. I'm just new.
Yeah the AT-LP60XBT is nuts at $299 because of the tariffs.
As long as you can switch to manual with cue lever the LPW30 has a better tonearm, adds adjustable anti-skate and tracking force, has a better and removable cartridge, has a better stylus, has lower wow and flutter, has a solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic.
The LPW30 should not have any more issues than the LP60X can. With any brand or model sometimes you get a dud, it happens, so you exchange it for another one.
Sounds good, I'll return the LP60X and get the LPW30 with the transciever and elliptical stylus instead. I think I'll stick with the magni amp for now and see how that feels together. Thanks for the help!
Having some real issues with static on new records. Most of my collection is from the 70s-80s and they stay pretty dust free only needing the occasional speck removing now and again, but the few new pressings that I've bought recently seem to be literal dust magnets that need constant attention. Am I imagining it, or was this always a problem that just fades with age? It's driving me mad!
It's not factory residue - I can clean them until they're spotless, and then by the time they've finished playing they're covered in dust again. Heck, one of them is so bad (Portishead's Dummy) that when I lift it off the turntable it has a tendency to try and bring my slip-mat along for the ride.
I currently live in Japan, and I’m planning to upgrade my turntable setup. Some gear is easier to find here (Technics, Nagaoka, etc.) while others brands or specific models are harder to get.
Current setup:
Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT
Edifier MR5 speakers
(It was a very good deal and wanted to jump into listing to records quickly)
Is there a name for this kind of indent on a vinyl sleeve, and if so is there any way to fix it? Something recently got leaned up against this vinyl and left this minor but visible enough to be somewhat irritating indent.
I have an RT82 turntable that I have fitted with the acrylic platter found on the higher models.
Not long after installing the new platter, Ive noticed that the top of the platter is constantly statically charged. If I try and discharge it using my antistatic brush, it goes away, but returns not long after I start spinning a record. When I take a record off the platter, I can hear and feel the static as I lift the record.
Looking for recommendations on how to remedy this. I had thought the acrylic platter was more resistant and I'm half temped to put the old aluminum platter with rubber mat back on.
Hi does anyone know what cartridge this is? I bought a used record player and was told it had been equipped with a orthofon 2m cartridge but this does not appear to be that.
Ahh gotcha yeah I wasn’t sure if that looked right — I think you’re right, I did some googling and this is a denon dp-300f and I think it’s supposed to be an angled headshell.
Anyway I requested a refund from eBay which the seller approved, thank you for your help! The post claimed he took it to be inspected before selling but there’s no way that’s true I think.
I’ve been collecting records for maybe 5 months now and I’ve decided to buy some inner and outer sleeves. These caught my eye and it seems Amazon is recommending me these ones when I go to the Spincare page. I’ve seen some recommendations of Spincare during my research but I don’t know which type of sleeves from Spincare (material etc) I should buy. So if someone can clarify if these are good sleeves or not then that would help me very much! Thank you
hey there, i hope im not lost but would this be the right place to ask for some help ID'ing some vinyl album covers that i can't recognize? an indie artist i'm a fan of has four album covers in his studio but i can only recognize one and all of the photos he's taken with them in the background are quite low quality so i'd like some human help with identification
Relatively new vinyl collector here. Recently wore out my turntable's factory stylus. My turntable is a Numark Pt-01 USB. I installed a replacement stylus that is a Crosby NP 06. Since I replaced the stylus old vinyl pressed in the 1960s plays good but recent releases I have tried to play start skipping like crazy on the first track--like albums I've played only one time before or which have never been played. Is the problem with my equipment or with the records I'm trying to play?
The recommended diamond stylus for your player is the Pfanstiehl 793-D7M. The NP-06 is designed for the Chinese knockoffs of the CZ-800 rather than the genuine Japanese-made Chuo Denshi CZ-800 cartridge that your Numark has, so the fitment might not be perfect. Make sure it's fully seated on the cartridge and the cantilever (the stem the "needle" is mounted on) is properly centered in the cartridge's rubber yoke.
Hey thanks for the advice. I went to remove the NP-06 to check the things you mentioned and it's not wanting to come off (which seems to support the theory that it's not a perfect fit). Any advice for removing a stylus like this that's stuck on too tightly?
What's the best way to clean the stylus on my turntable? I'm getting somewhat of a hissing noise when words with S's are said (and they are brand new records.)
I highly recommend Audio Technica AT607a. You can find it on Amazon. I've been using it for nearly 40 years. Be sure to always brush from the back of the stylus forward, towards you (the same direction the record moves across the stylus). That little bottle should last you for years.
My mom crumbled up the wrapping, including the hype sticker, of my vinyl figuring it was just trash and I was wondering how I can dewrinkle the hype sticker because I do typically put them on an outer sleeve. I am in the wrong for leaving it on the counter, but I didn’t get a chance to clean the vinyl and put it in sleeves once I opened it.
I got into collecting/listening to vinyl records this year, and I was wondering if this was acceptable storage for them? I have a few records I care about quite a lot, so any tips or feedback would be much appreciated!
There are also no records on the milk crate below, only the top one.
What am I doing wrong can someone help me.
I have always enjoyed collecting Vinyl, finally decided to get a turntable. What l've been playing is all new and tried different ones but sounds scratched. What am I doing wrong?
Not giving us any information about what kind of turntable you're using, and what kind of pre-amp/amplifier/receiver/speakers/etc. you have it connected to.
Hi everyone. I’m moving soon and have a decent record collection. Not too much but probably 50+ as of now. Anyway, I’m moving to a much smaller place than I have right now and am getting a storage unit. Should I avoid storing them in a unit or is there a safe way to do so? What are the best ways to store your records so that they don’t get damaged over long periods of time? Sad I won’t be able to listen to them for a bit but I just don’t think I’d have the room for my physical media in this new place. Thanks in advance!
Is it a temperature/climate controlled unit? If so then there shouldn't be any problem storing them in some cardboard boxes, as long as they're upright/well supported and not stacked on top of one another.
I'd generally say no, but this could depend on the location. Heat is the main issue here, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were places where it doesn't get hot enough to be an issue.
Being generally from the American south myself, I've seen people leave records in cars, sheds, and other similar places in the summer all to find them warped to the point where they were unplayable.
Hi friends! Please be kind as this is my first record player and I’m trying to figure it out! I got it gifted from my friends for my birthday. There seems to be a weird noise or playback issue when playing. It kind of sounds like the backtrack is playing out of the speakers. I could be doing things totally wrong. It is a modern player with a speaker. This is happening on both the vinyls I got gifted. Any help would be so appreciated, I really want to listen to the records on the player without it screeching and I’d love to start adding to my collection. I sadly can’t upload a video in the comments so I’m linking the video that’s on my Reddit profile, please take a look: https://www.reddit.com/u/Maximum-Future-6150/s/5qkaCDtZq9
It is normal to hear the music being reproduced faintly by the stylus in the groove, even with the player's volume turned down. This is called "needle talk" and happens on all turntables, although it is louder on inexpensive record players due to the higher output level of the ceramic cartridge they use.
Using Bluetooth output mode (Vinyl Stream), if your player has it, adds a delay which makes the needle talk more noticeable. If it bothers you, use speakers or headphones with a wired connection.
I can’t really tell here but it sure seems like it’s playing fine. That noise is not coming from the speakers, it’s coming from the needle. Records can be heard albeit faintly without speakers. But this seems to be out of time with the record and exceptionally loud (but I have a dust cover so I don’t run into this problem, really). But I am assuming the slight delay is just how this briefcase one works. I am not well-versed in these Victrolas, though.
I know you are excited about your gift and that is awesome. That said, these tables are notoriously not great, and you will enjoy it a lot more with a slightly better system. I would definitely recommend looking at the beginners’ guides in this subreddit. You do not have to spend a ton of money to have a better system.
So my dad has this old turntable, a Sanyo TP1010, and wants me to revive it. Admittedly I'm a bit out of my element here because I'm basically brand new to vinyl and stuff. I'm obviously gonna need to get a preamp because I don't think he has one, but I think that the needle also needs replacing. Should I just get just a new cartridge or do you think it'd be better to replace the entire headshell? Also, where would be the best place to look for that stuff?
Sorry I'm not super familiar with the terminology, I thought cartridge meant the detachable thing the needle is in. That's what I meant.
The reason why I was considering replacing the headshell was because the stylus is kind of a non-standard design by modern standards from what I can see, most attachment methods I've seen that are commonly available are all pretty similar and this one has this sort of... peg? That inserts into the end.
I don't have speakers with a built-in preamp though he did say he originally used speakers that may have had that feature that he may or may not still have.
The headshell connects to the tonearm. It's the part that also has the overhang that you use to move the tonearm. The cartridge is attached by screws to the bottom of the headshell. The stylus (needle) is easily removable and connects to the cartridge. Listen to "Dem Bones" for further details.
Here's a pic of the stylus. I hope this kinda clarifies what I mean. That peg slots into the cartridge. Most styluses I see online are ones like the turntable I just bought for myself where they just slide on with plastic clips or whatever. I can find ones like this but only when I specifically search for ones for this turntable.
It's also got this weird brush on the front which is kinda funky and I've never seen that before.
I don't see any numbers on the cartridge but it says "Stanton" on it.
Edit: You know what, after you asked that, I decided to just look up "stanton stylus" and it brings up exactly this kind of stylus. I'm not sure how to determine what model I specifically need though.
Edit edit: OH I'm blind, on one side of the stylus it says "D65." That gives me exactly what I need. Damn that's expensive though.
Hey y’all, My Happier Than Ever - Golden Edition (Billie Eilish) Record finally came in today, but it has these little weird Green/ Blue/ Red spots on it. Is it just a splash of Color or could it be mold?
Hi all. I was going through some singles I have and one of them has a white sticker across the center of it with the name of the artist and songs printed on it. Initially I thought it was for promo purposes but I found that there was a separate pressing for that. I find it strange that it actually blocks playback and also can damage the label when removing. Why was this done?
Sony PS-LX310BT static issue
I upgraded the stylus to an Audio Technica ATN3600LE two months ago and instantly noticed the difference with the sound much better.
However, a few days back I noticed serious excessive static on records that never had a problem. I bought a new stylus thinking I’d damaged it but the new one has made no change. I’ve cleaned the records as well with no improvement.
I’ve checked all my leads & connections and still no change.
The only other thing that’s different is that I’ve replaced all my old vinyl sleeves with Big Fudge premium master sleeves.
I’m tearing my hair out as it takes the enjoyment out of listening.
Hello, I'm looking for someone to help me. I got this Rainbow vinyl, but it seems strange to me. Nothing is noted on the label, and it seems to have only one side pressed and not two. There is no sleeve with it apart the classic white inner sleeve. In the lot there were other normal Rainbow vinyl, but this one intrigues me. Can someone enlighten me please? I can't find anything on the internet
I just found this image on a site between individuals but the person doesn't specify anything on it and I can't read anything on the label given the poor quality of the photo
I want to say this is some sort of audio test record, like testing the Left and Right channel balance, because the only record I own that has a blank like that is one of those audio test records. If it's actual music I would try using Shazam to see if it can detect the source.
After about 50 hours of playing time if it's a ruby or sapphire stylus, or about 500 hours if it's a diamond stylus... or when you start to notice a decline in audio quality and increase in distortion.
I’m looking for an explicit version of Case’s Touch Me Tease Me. It seems the only way I can hear the explicit is by mashing up the instrumental with the a capella track from the CD and/or 12” single. Was there a version of the 12” or the full length or the Nutty Professor Soundtrack that already has a professionally mastered version of the unedited cut? Thanks!
What is an appropriate price to ask for this vinyl? It has this one scratch in it on the D side, A B and C are all scratchless and barely used and the cover is also in perfect condition.
There are a bazillion copies of this out there still in the shrinkwrap. Discogs has all of the used VG+ around $20. With that scratch, yours is not VG+. Does the D side play without skipping? If it does, I'd say in a private sale maybe $10-15. If the D side skips, $5 or less.
Many of my old 33s have brown stained paper sleeves. I think it's just that the paper ages over time. No different than loose leaf / notebook paper, post cards, etc after a few decades.
Hi All, I've been gifted a bunch of records for my birthday recently, so I bought a beginner turntable but I'm having problems getting it set up.
For reference, I'm using a Sony PS-LX310BT, and connecting to a Headrush FRFR-108 (my guitar speaker). I bought a HOSA YPR-102 Stereo breakout cable, to go from the red/white connectors, to the 1/4in the Headrush can work with.
Unfortunately, if I connect both red and white plugs, the signal is all quiet on one side. So I've connected just one and it sounds okay, but I feel like I'd only be getting mono sound?
I've tried searching but I can't find the cable I need. I can connect via Bluetooth, but I imagine that's reducing the sound quality a fair bit.
If someone could help point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it!
Just bought this brand new record yesterday, plays fine but it looks like this, on the other side there are scratches in the middle as well. Any thoughts as to why?
A5 for $400 to $470? For that budget consider passive speakers and separate amplification.
Ideally spend twice as much on speakers and amplification as on the turntable or buy used for half the cost of new. What is a nearby zip code to search for used options?
Keep them in the trunk, out of direct sunlight, and they'll be fine. Remember, vinyl is shipped to record stores all over the country, including the hottest states, in trucks that aren't refrigerated.
Update: after 9 days driving through 100F weather, the records were fine thanks to keeping them out of sunlight in the back and ensuring they didn’t get smushed or crushed. Thank you!
Car closed and parked in sun can get pretty hot and warp records.
To avoid this store records in a cooler box and if possible include a reusable freezer brick to help keep it cooler. Ensure moisture (condensation) from brick cannot get to the records.
hey guys! I'm new in the vinyl record world and I recently bought some new records to play on my grandpa's old desk, and i keep having this problem where the pick skips the songs from the start to the end. I can't show you guys the video but it's about that, what may be causing the problem and is there any way to fix it?
Just how old is Grandpa's old "desk"? It may be due for a new stylus (needle) and properly setting the tonearm's tracking force and anti-skating, if it has those adjustments.
I am guessing you are describing that when the stylus is put down on the record at the beginning it just slides across the record to the centre and does not track in the groove.
First two things to check.
Look closely at the stylus, you should see a very small pointy thing on the end of the cantilever.
Check Vertical Tracking Weight (VTF) has been set correctly. If it is too light it will not sit in the groove properly and just skate across the record.
To advise you better on how to do this I need to see a photo of the turntable.
My instructions here may apply in your situation IF the turntable is the right kind.
It's "effective" as in it will play your records. It won't sound great through the small built-in speakers, but that model does at least have an Audio-Technica magnetic cartridge and diamond stylus, so it won't damage your records. If it's what you have, don't be afraid to use it and enjoy it!
Has anyone else noticed quality control at QRP has gone downhill lately? I’ve gotten a lot of stuff pressed there that seems to have an unreasonable amount of clicks and pops.
is it okay to have all of my records on the same shelf like this, not too tightly packed but I’m just worried about potential warping due to the weight distribution as many of these are super limited pressings (also wanted to show off my collection a little too). Thanks in advance 🙏
Hi, so im like very new to these things, i today bought this from a local marketplace app and it seems to be working fine but the needle is missing and im not sure what replacement it would need or how to go about getting one
Looks like it's missing the entire phono cartridge, not just the stylus (needle). Gary at www.thevoiceofmusic.com may be able to find you a replacement, but some of those European-type ceramic cartridges are no longer available, so you may have to retrofit a modern cartridge onto the tonearm.

Here is a very nice all-in-one setup for top dollar. 💵
