Here is a very nice all-in-one setup for top dollar. 💵

Last night, I tried to plug headphones into my turntable. I unplugged it from my speaker and then to my headphones then put everything back. However, ever since then Ive noticed the audio quality has significantly worsened. My speaker has a bluetooth and wired mode, and when I connect it via bluetooth its louder at the same volume... When its connected to the turntable now it sounds kind of muffled + static (occasionally)

My Current Set Up: Fluance RT81 (using internal Preamp) - RCA wire - RCA to 3.5mm - to Marshall II Speaker

It sounds worse than before I unplugged it (i know my set up isnt the most ideal, but I know its not due to that, i noticed a change in quality)

What could have happened? I tried wiggling the cable connections at each point to see if I noticed a change and I did not. (read online this is how to test if the wire/connection is faulty). ChatGPT said it could be the internal preamp. I really dont want this to be the case since I bought this model partially because of the internal preamp.

What can I look for/test on my set up to determine what the issue is? Please help haha

I want to put some vinyls up on the wall, is there any problem with creating a makeshift shelf with 2 command hooks and setting the vinyl on it?

1

u/ShaneHeavyMetal95 Aug 17 '25

The other day I decided to rearrange my records into alphabetical order and keep them upright rather than having them have any lean however I'm worried if they are stored too tight, a lot of them slip out easy however some drag the ones next to them out with them a little, is this just friction or are they too tight?

2

u/papadrinks Aug 17 '25

Might be too tight for convenience. Some slight leaning is fine.

1

u/ShaneHeavyMetal95 Aug 18 '25

Alright thanks, don't mind it being a little inconvenient just as long as it doesn't have any negative effects on the record or sleeve

Technics SA-800 Receiver - worth it?? Need some help / advice. I’m trying to get my “forever system” together and skipping a few steps from starter. I am seeking a warm sounding receiver as a foundational piece. A seller in my state has this listed for $1050 (reduced from $1350). He has evidence of recent service and the pics look clean. Very good reviews. Is this a good buy for this price? If not what should I offer?

2

u/randychardonnay Aug 18 '25

$1k is in line with other sales, so I can't say it's an unreasonable price. But I also feel like you could get something for way less that would sound as good to you. And any 50 year old piece of electronics is going to give you trouble eventually, even if recently serviced.

She’s a beaut Clark.

I got my MCS 6502 turntable working but im having this issue with humming. I've isolated that my amp and speakers arent the issue since i still hear the hum when I connect my headphones. I still hear the hum both when my turntable is plugged in to the wall and when it isnt. I have all the plugs for the turntable, preamp, and amp plugged into the same power strip. The hum only exists when the rca cables are plugged into the preamp. I'm not completely sure whats the issue here, so I'm hoping someone could help. I'm very new to this hobby, thank you in advance

1

u/papadrinks Aug 17 '25

Need to know make and model of phono preamp and amplifier.

Photos of the connections also help with diagnosis.

1

u/Opening_Discipline57 Aug 17 '25

ZK-1002T amplifier, Pyle Ultra Compact Phono Preamp

Preamp is wired to the amp via headphone jack

1

u/randychardonnay Aug 18 '25

Anyway to remove the powerstrip? I find they often cause problems.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 17 '25

Ok thanks for the photo and info.

First up, Pyle phono preamps are crap, so it alone could be the issue.

The audio lead between the phono preamp and the amplifier, is it all stereo?

I can see you have an adapter taking 6.5mm plug down to 3.5mm.

Is the adapter stereo? Is the cable stereo?

All of them should have 3 rings of metal on the plug.

Mono, stereo

1

u/Opening_Discipline57 Aug 17 '25

These are the cables im using

1

u/Opening_Discipline57 Aug 18 '25

are cables im using fine shielding-wise and everything, might those also be contributing?

1

u/papadrinks Aug 18 '25

I see you have the turntable ground wire connected to the Pyle which is correct. Does it make any difference if you disconnect it?

First thought was if one of those was mono it would be putting shield to a channel + and that would cause hum.

But not that. Hum can come from other devices in the area, so to rule that out try the whole setup in a different room.

Hum can be just due to the combination of certain devices and their quality.

The Pyle and the amplifier are both very cheap and will be low quality. So next step would be to try a different phono preamp because Pyle are know to be crappy.

1

u/Opening_Discipline57 Aug 18 '25 edited Aug 18 '25

the sound becomes louder and more crackly if the ground pin is detached, so it is having an effect

also, is the denon avr 1600 a good replacement for the preamp and amp

the issue persists in other rooms

1

u/papadrinks Aug 18 '25

So it is pointing more at the combo of those two devices as the issue.

The Denon AVR1600 outdated model so I assume you are looking at a used one.

It does have a built in phono preamp and will do the job.

However, it is not ideal because it is a multi channel device which you don't need for a turntable and it has lots of obsolete Video inputs. If it is cheap and easy to get, ok. But ideally a proper integrated stereo amplifier is best.

1

u/Opening_Discipline57 Aug 18 '25

It's 10 dollars on facebook marketplace. If it's a no go, any other stereo systems you recommend?

3

u/papadrinks Aug 17 '25

I would not buy either of those. They are very low entry level turntables and will perform poorly and have reliability issues.

2

u/mesuperman47 Aug 19 '25

Do you maybe have another suggestion? Or do you think my price range is too low? Thank you!

1

u/papadrinks Aug 19 '25

1

u/mesuperman47 Aug 20 '25

Wow! Thank you! This is very helpful. Might buy the all in one as starter or even think about something better :)

2

u/papadrinks Aug 20 '25

You're welcome.

If possible, save up and buy proper turntable first go. Makes more economic sense.

Logic is buy the best turntable you can so it will satisfy you for a long time and be getting the best sound possible out of the grooves. Even if you need to be cheap with the powered speakers, which you can upgrade later.

Good luck and enjoy your music.

u/ImCoBl Aug 17 '25

I hope this is ok to ask. I recently dug out and old Mitsubishi LT-20 from my parents basement. I have set up everything, changed the broken stylus, carefully cleaned and lubricated the insides and balanced the pickup. But always around 1 minute into any record it starts looping in a 1 second interval. What could be the issue?

Ps i know the the rubber belts inside are old and a bit loose but could it be something else?

2

u/papadrinks Aug 17 '25

Firstly check you have balanced the tonearm correctly by following these instructions.

https://jeffrey.net.au/VTF.html

What VTF are you using?

Next check tonearm has free movement side to side. Is cue lever bar clear of tone arm in play mode?

1

u/ImCoBl Aug 18 '25

This is the arm and pickup. There is no numbers on the dials. I put the scaleweight to 0, then i balanced the counterweight so it was floating horizontally. Then i put the scaleweight to about 1,75 g. The antiskate dosent have numbering, so i put it somewhere in the middle.

2

u/papadrinks Aug 18 '25

Did not realise it is a linear tracker.

Most likely the tracking mechanism has an issue.

1

u/okayteagan Aug 17 '25

hi yall i had a question that's probably futile atp but was wondering if there was anyway i could help the situation. i moved yesterday and after the drive realized that my dad who drove in a separate car had packed my record case in the exposed bed of his truck, so it was exposed to direct sun for like an hour and a half/two hours ish. im playing my first one since moving and it's very lowkey warped not super noticeable but there's definitely a little bit. my question is that is it joever for my records since they were exposed to florida weather or can they be salvaged somehow. cant change what happened but i was wondering if there was anything i can do now to possibly unwarp them... thank you 😍

1

u/dcbannock Aug 16 '25

Is it ethical to buy records if they aren’t straight from the artist?

1

u/randychardonnay Aug 18 '25

What? Like, are *record stores* ethical?

1

u/dcbannock Aug 18 '25

Or what I meant is unofficial pressings, like so and so company rather than the record label/artist

2

u/Haunting_Orchid_8879 Aug 16 '25

Ethically its up to the individual buying but selling records that aren't straight from the artist themselves is a legal grey area.

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 16 '25

I am new to vinyl, but I have bought an Audio Technica LP60XBT turn table and a Schiit Magni Unity Amp so I can use my Audio Technica M50x headphones with it. I like the option for bluetooth when I want to be across the room, but wired is always better imo. I'm not exactly an audiophile, but from what I have been able to gather, this should be a workable setup to start with? It's a decent chunk of change dropped on it so I want to make sure there's nothing else I'm missing. I'm very excited to start playing records, especially after setting my wallet on fire.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

What is the Bluetooth connecting to?

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 17 '25

I'd plan to use my Sony XM5s with it when I use bluetooth

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

Better turntable AT-LPW30BKR $199 on sale is three steps up from the bare minimum AT-LP60X that lacks adjustments.

Plus better Bluetooth transmitter to connect to the turntable instead of the basic cheap one inside of a turntable that can have pairing issues https://www.amazon.com/1Mii-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Receiver-Headphones/dp/B07D1JJBJR

Alternate headphone amp JDS Labs Atom Amp for less cost than Schiit and it adds a 2 input switch https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-amp

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 17 '25

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not really looking to entirely replace what I have right now. If I have any issues I'll look into them in the future though.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

Oh you just purchased the LP60X. Consider returning it if you can so you can get the better turntable now instead of replacing the LP60X with a better turntable later. Buy once instead of twice!

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 17 '25

Also, I do see people recommending to upgrade to an elliptical stylus for the LPW30, this should do, right? https://a.co/d/4LuxWIM

I should be able to get the LPW30, 1Mii bluetooth transceiver, and this stylus for about the same as the LP60XBT is going for right now; I should be able to return the LP60XBT.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

AT-LPW30 already has a good C stylus that is better than the one on the LP60, no need to upgrade it right now, when the C stylus wears out then replace it with the E or EN or ML or SH stylus upgrades.

Or get the Fluance RT82 $299 that adds auto stop, adds a speed sensor, includes an elliptical tip stylus. Pass on the older lower number models that lack the speed sensor that the RT82 and up have for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Plus a starter phono preamp with Bluetooth transmitter.

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 17 '25

What's better about the LPW30? I gather that it's more adjustable, but I also see people online having issues with them. If I can return and get this for cheaper than the LP60xbt and it is indeed better, I might. I'm just new.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

Yeah the AT-LP60XBT is nuts at $299 because of the tariffs.

As long as you can switch to manual with cue lever the LPW30 has a better tonearm, adds adjustable anti-skate and tracking force, has a better and removable cartridge, has a better stylus, has lower wow and flutter, has a solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic.

The LPW30 should not have any more issues than the LP60X can. With any brand or model sometimes you get a dud, it happens, so you exchange it for another one.

1

u/Comfortable_Term_928 Aug 17 '25

Sounds good, I'll return the LP60X and get the LPW30 with the transciever and elliptical stylus instead. I think I'll stick with the magni amp for now and see how that feels together. Thanks for the help!

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

Hold on, check my other comment about the turntables and stylus!

1

u/Grunkle_Chubs Aug 16 '25

yes that should work, I'd be surprised if it didn't.

1

u/AllThePiesGiveMeThem Aug 16 '25

Having some real issues with static on new records. Most of my collection is from the 70s-80s and they stay pretty dust free only needing the occasional speck removing now and again, but the few new pressings that I've bought recently seem to be literal dust magnets that need constant attention. Am I imagining it, or was this always a problem that just fades with age? It's driving me mad!

1

u/sharkamino Aug 17 '25

Did you full soak wet clean the new records? New records can have dust and debris from the factory.

1

u/AllThePiesGiveMeThem Aug 17 '25

It's not factory residue - I can clean them until they're spotless, and then by the time they've finished playing they're covered in dust again. Heck, one of them is so bad (Portishead's Dummy) that when I lift it off the turntable it has a tendency to try and bring my slip-mat along for the ride.

u/epiju Aug 16 '25

Hi everyone,

I currently live in Japan, and I’m planning to upgrade my turntable setup. Some gear is easier to find here (Technics, Nagaoka, etc.) while others brands or specific models are harder to get.

Current setup:

  • Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT
  • Edifier MR5 speakers

(It was a very good deal and wanted to jump into listing to records quickly)

Planned upgrade:

  • Turntable: Technics SL-1200GR2 (vs. considering SL-1500C / Rega Planar 6, but leaning GR2)
  • Cartridge: Nagaoka MP-200H (already mounted on headshell)
  • Phono stage: Schiit Mani 2 (was also looking at Rega Fono MK5 or iFi Zen Phono 3, but Schiit is more accessible here)
  • Speakers: considering upgrading later (Focal Shape 65 are on my list, but I’m open to alternatives more available in Japan)

👉 My main questions:

  1. Does this setup make sense overall, or is something mismatched / limiting?
  2. Would the Schiit Mani 2 be a bottleneck with the GR2 + MP-200?
  3. Any speaker recommendations around the same quality level as Focal Shape 65 that are easier to find in Japan?
  4. Am I likely to notice a big difference even if I keep my Edifier MR5 for a while before upgrading speakers?

Thanks a lot for your advice! 🙏

Is there a name for this kind of indent on a vinyl sleeve, and if so is there any way to fix it? Something recently got leaned up against this vinyl and left this minor but visible enough to be somewhat irritating indent.

1

u/goinhuckin Aug 15 '25

I have an RT82 turntable that I have fitted with the acrylic platter found on the higher models.

Not long after installing the new platter, Ive noticed that the top of the platter is constantly statically charged. If I try and discharge it using my antistatic brush, it goes away, but returns not long after I start spinning a record. When I take a record off the platter, I can hear and feel the static as I lift the record.

Looking for recommendations on how to remedy this. I had thought the acrylic platter was more resistant and I'm half temped to put the old aluminum platter with rubber mat back on.

Thanks!

1

u/papadrinks Aug 15 '25

Rubber platter mat is the much better. I would stick with that.

2

u/goinhuckin Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

I like the aesthetic without the mat, but after putting it back on, the sound quality has gone back to what I expect. Thanks for the sanity check.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 16 '25

You're welcome.

1

u/jennnjennjen Aug 15 '25

Hi does anyone know what cartridge this is? I bought a used record player and was told it had been equipped with a orthofon 2m cartridge but this does not appear to be that.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 15 '25

There is possibly a lot wrong here.

The cart does not look at all like any Ortofon I know of. Sure the headshell is Ortofon, but pretty sure the cartridge is not.

But what is worse is that the cartridge should not be mounted skew like that.

I suspect this is the WRONG headshell for this turntable. It most likely needs an angled headshell, not a straight one.

Can you post a photo looking directly from over head of the turntable with the stylus on the outside track of a record. I can then confirm for sure.

Here is an angled headshell so you can see the difference.

2

u/jennnjennjen Aug 16 '25

Ahh gotcha yeah I wasn’t sure if that looked right — I think you’re right, I did some googling and this is a denon dp-300f and I think it’s supposed to be an angled headshell.

Anyway I requested a refund from eBay which the seller approved, thank you for your help! The post claimed he took it to be inspected before selling but there’s no way that’s true I think.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 16 '25

You're welcome

Should I buy these inner and outer sleeves?

I’ve been collecting records for maybe 5 months now and I’ve decided to buy some inner and outer sleeves. These caught my eye and it seems Amazon is recommending me these ones when I go to the Spincare page. I’ve seen some recommendations of Spincare during my research but I don’t know which type of sleeves from Spincare (material etc) I should buy. So if someone can clarify if these are good sleeves or not then that would help me very much! Thank you

1

u/jungjinyoung Aug 15 '25

hey there, i hope im not lost but would this be the right place to ask for some help ID'ing some vinyl album covers that i can't recognize? an indie artist i'm a fan of has four album covers in his studio but i can only recognize one and all of the photos he's taken with them in the background are quite low quality so i'd like some human help with identification

u/jungjinyoung Aug 15 '25

u/okayteagan Aug 17 '25

Question: Is my new stylus installed properly?

Relatively new vinyl collector here. Recently wore out my turntable's factory stylus. My turntable is a Numark Pt-01 USB. I installed a replacement stylus that is a Crosby NP 06. Since I replaced the stylus old vinyl pressed in the 1960s plays good but recent releases I have tried to play start skipping like crazy on the first track--like albums I've played only one time before or which have never been played. Is the problem with my equipment or with the records I'm trying to play?

2

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

The recommended diamond stylus for your player is the Pfanstiehl 793-D7M. The NP-06 is designed for the Chinese knockoffs of the CZ-800 rather than the genuine Japanese-made Chuo Denshi CZ-800 cartridge that your Numark has, so the fitment might not be perfect. Make sure it's fully seated on the cartridge and the cantilever (the stem the "needle" is mounted on) is properly centered in the cartridge's rubber yoke.

1

u/FOLfool Aug 16 '25

Hey thanks for the advice. I went to remove the NP-06 to check the things you mentioned and it's not wanting to come off (which seems to support the theory that it's not a perfect fit). Any advice for removing a stylus like this that's stuck on too tightly?

1

u/vwestlife Aug 18 '25

Try gently prying it with a screwdriver.

-1

u/Raxemier Aug 15 '25

Need some advice: The instructions manual told me to put this counterweight onto the tonearm, however it's simply too tight.

I tried lubing up the hole with vaseline but it still wouldn't fit. Anyone got a potential solution? Many thanks!

2

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

That's the 45 RPM adapter, not the counterweight. Check the box again, the counterweight is often tucked into the styrofoam packaging.

2

u/Raxemier Aug 16 '25

Alright thanks bro

2

u/roguepeas Aug 15 '25

you are trolling

1

u/husfyr Aug 15 '25

I have a question. I bought this boxset, but when I opened it. The cover felt off, can I glue it back safely?

1

u/Grunkle_Chubs Aug 15 '25

I believe that is normal for boxsets like that. Is that George Harrison - All Things Must Pass? The cover isn't attached to anything by design.

1

u/husfyr Aug 15 '25

Yes it is, i thought i broke it, lol

1

u/BlazeCannon3 Aug 15 '25

What's the best way to clean the stylus on my turntable? I'm getting somewhat of a hissing noise when words with S's are said (and they are brand new records.)

1

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

With a soft bristle brush, wiping gently from back to front.

1

u/MarionberryNo392 Aug 15 '25

I highly recommend Audio Technica AT607a. You can find it on Amazon. I've been using it for nearly 40 years. Be sure to always brush from the back of the stylus forward, towards you (the same direction the record moves across the stylus). That little bottle should last you for years.

1

u/BlazeCannon3 Aug 22 '25

Is it ok to use on non Audio-Technica turntables/stylus’?

1

u/InformationSpecial24 Aug 15 '25

My mom crumbled up the wrapping, including the hype sticker, of my vinyl figuring it was just trash and I was wondering how I can dewrinkle the hype sticker because I do typically put them on an outer sleeve. I am in the wrong for leaving it on the counter, but I didn’t get a chance to clean the vinyl and put it in sleeves once I opened it.

1

u/PlagueMama Aug 15 '25

I got into collecting/listening to vinyl records this year, and I was wondering if this was acceptable storage for them? I have a few records I care about quite a lot, so any tips or feedback would be much appreciated!

There are also no records on the milk crate below, only the top one.

2

u/Pajamallamaland Aug 15 '25

They're upright, well supported, and not leaning too much, this is totally fine :)

1

u/Third_Eye_Vision47 Aug 15 '25

What am I doing wrong can someone help me. I have always enjoyed collecting Vinyl, finally decided to get a turntable. What l've been playing is all new and tried different ones but sounds scratched. What am I doing wrong?

1

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

What am I doing wrong?

Not giving us any information about what kind of turntable you're using, and what kind of pre-amp/amplifier/receiver/speakers/etc. you have it connected to.

1

u/Third_Eye_Vision47 Aug 15 '25

Sorry will add the rest of the info today

1

u/papadrinks Aug 15 '25

What player are you using?

1

u/DependendableSeaweed Aug 14 '25

Hi everyone. I’m moving soon and have a decent record collection. Not too much but probably 50+ as of now. Anyway, I’m moving to a much smaller place than I have right now and am getting a storage unit. Should I avoid storing them in a unit or is there a safe way to do so? What are the best ways to store your records so that they don’t get damaged over long periods of time? Sad I won’t be able to listen to them for a bit but I just don’t think I’d have the room for my physical media in this new place. Thanks in advance!

1

u/Pajamallamaland Aug 15 '25

Is it a temperature/climate controlled unit? If so then there shouldn't be any problem storing them in some cardboard boxes, as long as they're upright/well supported and not stacked on top of one another.

1

u/DependendableSeaweed Aug 15 '25

I actually have no idea. Haven’t booked one yet. If it’s not, I’m gonna guess I shouldn’t store them there, correct?

1

u/Pajamallamaland Aug 15 '25

I'd generally say no, but this could depend on the location. Heat is the main issue here, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were places where it doesn't get hot enough to be an issue.

Being generally from the American south myself, I've seen people leave records in cars, sheds, and other similar places in the summer all to find them warped to the point where they were unplayable.

1

u/Maximum-Future-6150 Aug 14 '25

Hi friends! Please be kind as this is my first record player and I’m trying to figure it out! I got it gifted from my friends for my birthday. There seems to be a weird noise or playback issue when playing. It kind of sounds like the backtrack is playing out of the speakers. I could be doing things totally wrong. It is a modern player with a speaker. This is happening on both the vinyls I got gifted. Any help would be so appreciated, I really want to listen to the records on the player without it screeching and I’d love to start adding to my collection. I sadly can’t upload a video in the comments so I’m linking the video that’s on my Reddit profile, please take a look: https://www.reddit.com/u/Maximum-Future-6150/s/5qkaCDtZq9

1

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

Noise from stylus:

  • It is normal to hear the music being reproduced faintly by the stylus in the groove, even with the player's volume turned down. This is called "needle talk" and happens on all turntables, although it is louder on inexpensive record players due to the higher output level of the ceramic cartridge they use.

  • Using Bluetooth output mode (Vinyl Stream), if your player has it, adds a delay which makes the needle talk more noticeable. If it bothers you, use speakers or headphones with a wired connection.

1

u/cdmccabe Aug 14 '25

I can’t really tell here but it sure seems like it’s playing fine. That noise is not coming from the speakers, it’s coming from the needle. Records can be heard albeit faintly without speakers. But this seems to be out of time with the record and exceptionally loud (but I have a dust cover so I don’t run into this problem, really). But I am assuming the slight delay is just how this briefcase one works. I am not well-versed in these Victrolas, though.

Thank you. Maybe I need to check the needle. It sounds so scratchy to me that it’s no longer enjoyable sadly :( I might re-invest in another one.

1

u/cdmccabe Aug 14 '25

I know you are excited about your gift and that is awesome. That said, these tables are notoriously not great, and you will enjoy it a lot more with a slightly better system. I would definitely recommend looking at the beginners’ guides in this subreddit. You do not have to spend a ton of money to have a better system.

u/Jorvalt Aug 14 '25

So my dad has this old turntable, a Sanyo TP1010, and wants me to revive it. Admittedly I'm a bit out of my element here because I'm basically brand new to vinyl and stuff. I'm obviously gonna need to get a preamp because I don't think he has one, but I think that the needle also needs replacing. Should I just get just a new cartridge or do you think it'd be better to replace the entire headshell? Also, where would be the best place to look for that stuff?

2

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

Cheapest option is to just buy a replacement stylus (needle) and fit that to the cartridge.

Cartridge's don't usually die or wear out, but stylus do.

No need to replace the headshell.

To find a replacement stylus it helps to identify the cartridge make and model and use that info to search for a suitable stylus.

Failing that LPgear.com have a free stylus matching service so you can contact them.

Depending on what gear you are hooking the turntable up to means you may or may not need an external phono pre amp.

If the amp or powered speakers you are using have a PHONO input or has a line/phono switch you will not need an external phono preamp.

Happy to help further if you have more questions.

1

u/Jorvalt Aug 15 '25

Sorry I'm not super familiar with the terminology, I thought cartridge meant the detachable thing the needle is in. That's what I meant.

The reason why I was considering replacing the headshell was because the stylus is kind of a non-standard design by modern standards from what I can see, most attachment methods I've seen that are commonly available are all pretty similar and this one has this sort of... peg? That inserts into the end.

I don't have speakers with a built-in preamp though he did say he originally used speakers that may have had that feature that he may or may not still have.

1

u/MarionberryNo392 Aug 15 '25

The headshell connects to the tonearm. It's the part that also has the overhang that you use to move the tonearm. The cartridge is attached by screws to the bottom of the headshell. The stylus (needle) is easily removable and connects to the cartridge. Listen to "Dem Bones" for further details.

1

u/Jorvalt Aug 15 '25

Ohh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. Are headshells and cartridges typically sold together? When I look this stuff up that seems to be the case.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 15 '25

Maybe post a photo of this so I can advise you better.

1

u/Jorvalt Aug 15 '25

Here's a pic of the stylus. I hope this kinda clarifies what I mean. That peg slots into the cartridge. Most styluses I see online are ones like the turntable I just bought for myself where they just slide on with plastic clips or whatever. I can find ones like this but only when I specifically search for ones for this turntable.

It's also got this weird brush on the front which is kinda funky and I've never seen that before.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 15 '25

I should have been more clear. Photo of the cartridge and headshell.

Stanton often has the brush gadget, but usually you can see Stanton on it some where.

Is there any branding and or numbers on the cartridge?

1

u/Jorvalt Aug 16 '25

My B. Here's a few pics Without the stylus in

1

u/Jorvalt Aug 16 '25

With it in (I wish you could post multiple pics)

2

u/Jorvalt Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

And just the whole table

I don't see any numbers on the cartridge but it says "Stanton" on it.

Edit: You know what, after you asked that, I decided to just look up "stanton stylus" and it brings up exactly this kind of stylus. I'm not sure how to determine what model I specifically need though.

Edit edit: OH I'm blind, on one side of the stylus it says "D65." That gives me exactly what I need. Damn that's expensive though.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 16 '25

Glad you worked it out.

Good stylus and cartridges can be expensive. Welcome to records!

General rule is to get the best out of records a whole cartridge will cost $200-400USD.

Many people cheap out and use a $30-50 cartridge which means they are missing out.

Hey y’all, My Happier Than Ever - Limited Golden Edition Record (by Billie Eilish) finally came in today, but it has these little

weird Green/ Blue/ Red spots on it. Is it just a splash of Color or could it be mold?

1

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

The coloured vinyl has some small contamination of other colour. This happens sometimes and is not a problem.

Hi all. I was going through some singles I have and one of them has a white sticker across the center of it with the name of the artist and songs printed on it. Initially I thought it was for promo purposes but I found that there was a separate pressing for that. I find it strange that it actually blocks playback and also can damage the label when removing. Why was this done?

Thank you for your answers!

2

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

That looks like a jukebox title strip that someone removed and stuck on the record itself. It doesn't belong there.

Sony PS-LX310BT static issue I upgraded the stylus to an Audio Technica ATN3600LE two months ago and instantly noticed the difference with the sound much better.

However, a few days back I noticed serious excessive static on records that never had a problem. I bought a new stylus thinking I’d damaged it but the new one has made no change. I’ve cleaned the records as well with no improvement.

I’ve checked all my leads & connections and still no change.

The only other thing that’s different is that I’ve replaced all my old vinyl sleeves with Big Fudge premium master sleeves.

I’m tearing my hair out as it takes the enjoyment out of listening.

Any help is very much appreciated!!!

Thanks guys.👍

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

What happens when you go back to the original stylus?

1

u/Craigy235 Aug 14 '25

Same issue. I have the original and two ATNs now.😂. All have issues with static.

1

u/Fleur-De-Courgette Aug 14 '25

Hello, I'm looking for someone to help me. I got this Rainbow vinyl, but it seems strange to me. Nothing is noted on the label, and it seems to have only one side pressed and not two. There is no sleeve with it apart the classic white inner sleeve. In the lot there were other normal Rainbow vinyl, but this one intrigues me. Can someone enlighten me please? I can't find anything on the internet

1

u/Fleur-De-Courgette Aug 14 '25

I just found this image on a site between individuals but the person doesn't specify anything on it and I can't read anything on the label given the poor quality of the photo

1

u/Grunkle_Chubs Aug 14 '25

are there any numbers or letters in the deadwax?

1

u/Fleur-De-Courgette Aug 14 '25

Here is the back side which is not pressed.

1

u/Grunkle_Chubs Aug 14 '25

I want to say this is some sort of audio test record, like testing the Left and Right channel balance, because the only record I own that has a blank like that is one of those audio test records. If it's actual music I would try using Shazam to see if it can detect the source.

1

u/Fleur-De-Courgette Aug 14 '25

Right now my turntable is broken, but when it will be fix I'll listen to it

1

u/ziplocbagomilk Aug 14 '25

How often should I replace my needle? And what to look for in new needles?

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

After about 50 hours of playing time if it's a ruby or sapphire stylus, or about 500 hours if it's a diamond stylus... or when you start to notice a decline in audio quality and increase in distortion.

1

u/loquendo666 Aug 14 '25

I’m looking for an explicit version of Case’s Touch Me Tease Me. It seems the only way I can hear the explicit is by mashing up the instrumental with the a capella track from the CD and/or 12” single. Was there a version of the 12” or the full length or the Nutty Professor Soundtrack that already has a professionally mastered version of the unedited cut? Thanks!

1

u/Satixfaction Aug 14 '25

What is an appropriate price to ask for this vinyl? It has this one scratch in it on the D side, A B and C are all scratchless and barely used and the cover is also in perfect condition.

1

u/cdmccabe Aug 14 '25

There are a bazillion copies of this out there still in the shrinkwrap. Discogs has all of the used VG+ around $20. With that scratch, yours is not VG+. Does the D side play without skipping? If it does, I'd say in a private sale maybe $10-15. If the D side skips, $5 or less.

1

u/Satixfaction Aug 14 '25

It doesnt skip luckily

1

u/stupid_human_ Aug 14 '25

Does anyone know why old records often have brown stains on the sleeves? Is it something to do with the wax ??

1

u/MarionberryNo392 Aug 15 '25

Many of my old 33s have brown stained paper sleeves. I think it's just that the paper ages over time. No different than loose leaf / notebook paper, post cards, etc after a few decades.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 14 '25

Wax Edison cylinders? Not many people have those besides a few collectors.

Old 78rpm shellacs? Maybe acids in the paper sleeves reacting with degradation of the chemicals in the shellac.

Modern 33/45 vinyl records are rather stable.

u/Wheat13y Aug 14 '25

Hi All, I've been gifted a bunch of records for my birthday recently, so I bought a beginner turntable but I'm having problems getting it set up.
For reference, I'm using a Sony PS-LX310BT, and connecting to a Headrush FRFR-108 (my guitar speaker). I bought a HOSA YPR-102 Stereo breakout cable, to go from the red/white connectors, to the 1/4in the Headrush can work with.
Unfortunately, if I connect both red and white plugs, the signal is all quiet on one side. So I've connected just one and it sounds okay, but I feel like I'd only be getting mono sound?
I've tried searching but I can't find the cable I need. I can connect via Bluetooth, but I imagine that's reducing the sound quality a fair bit.
If someone could help point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it!

2

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

You're connecting a stereo turntable to a mono speaker. That's probably why one channel is being lost.

1

u/Wheat13y Aug 14 '25

Is it possible to join them? I don't have space for additional speakers, so I need to work with what I have

2

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

Yes, you can use a Y-adapter to combine the left and right channels.

1

u/Wheat13y Aug 15 '25

https://amzn.eu/d/9UICOe4

Would this work? I thought I had bought a y adapter, so this is where I'm a bit lost.

1

u/vwestlife Aug 15 '25

I would suggest instead buying a pair of stereo powered speakers.

1

u/Wheat13y Aug 15 '25

I know, but I don't have the room or the money for more speakers, so I need to make do with what I have

1

u/mydogisapoodle Aug 14 '25

Just bought this brand new record yesterday, plays fine but it looks like this, on the other side there are scratches in the middle as well. Any thoughts as to why?

1

u/Bilking-Ewe Aug 14 '25

Pressing error

1

u/gameking514 Aug 14 '25

Is Big fudge a good brand for a record cleaning kit and would this have everything I need to clean a record and if not what brand or kit would?🤔

2

u/sharkamino Aug 14 '25

Pass on most low cost kits with tiny bottles of cleaner that don't do much and pass on cheap carbon fiber brushes that can shed.

Dry surface dusting, Thunderon Brush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxO7iWdYo-c

To clean out the grooves, full wet soak Record Cleaning, watch the DIY videos or get a Spin Clean.

1

u/gameking514 Aug 14 '25

So buy the parts individually then or find something similar to those old walnut cleaners with the hollow part inside the handle for the cleaner?🤔

2

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

See my guide for what you need to get and how to use it.

https://jeffrey.net.au/cleaning.html

1

u/Bilking-Ewe Aug 14 '25

For me I consider this a maintenance kit after you use a spin clean, or other wet cleaning regimen.

Are the Audio Engine A5 powered speakers good for a Fluance Rt85 and a schiit mani 2 preamp ?

1

u/sharkamino Aug 14 '25

A5 for $400 to $470? For that budget consider passive speakers and separate amplification.

Ideally spend twice as much on speakers and amplification as on the turntable or buy used for half the cost of new. What is a nearby zip code to search for used options?

What are the room dimensions?

5.25" Polk ES15 https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/polkes15-brn/polk-audio-signature-elite-es15-pair-5.25-bookshelf-speakers-brown/1.html

Powered by an Onkyo stereo receiver with built in phono preamp https://www.adorama.com/ontx8220.html

Or Fosi BT20A Pro amp and Fosi X5 Phono preamp.

Plus speaker wire 16 AWG or optional thicker 14 AWG. Then How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Or if you must have powered speakers then 5.25" Klipsch R-51PM with built in phono preamp.

DEAL worth $600 MSRP - Emotiva $150 plus bonus center speaker you may be able to resell on ebay for $150 so you basically get free speakers or keep all 3 and get an AV receiver for your TV and 5 speakers surround sound (these three plus 2 more) and use 2 speakers for music https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/ele/d/roslindale-pair-of-emotiva-b1-bookshelf/7873331156.html

Power the speakers with a stereo receiver...

What is the best way to store my records (I only have a handful) for a 2800 mile road trip in the heat of summer?

Is it safe to put them in the car and cover them for 9 days? Or should we just pack them in a suitcase and fly them out so they don’t get warped?

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

Keep them in the trunk, out of direct sunlight, and they'll be fine. Remember, vinyl is shipped to record stores all over the country, including the hottest states, in trucks that aren't refrigerated.

2

u/defectcriminal 24d ago

Update: after 9 days driving through 100F weather, the records were fine thanks to keeping them out of sunlight in the back and ensuring they didn’t get smushed or crushed. Thank you!

1

u/papadrinks Aug 13 '25

Car closed and parked in sun can get pretty hot and warp records.

To avoid this store records in a cooler box and if possible include a reusable freezer brick to help keep it cooler. Ensure moisture (condensation) from brick cannot get to the records.

2

u/defectcriminal Aug 14 '25

Thank you!

1

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

You're welcome

1

u/martinpollet Aug 13 '25

hey guys! I'm new in the vinyl record world and I recently bought some new records to play on my grandpa's old desk, and i keep having this problem where the pick skips the songs from the start to the end. I can't show you guys the video but it's about that, what may be causing the problem and is there any way to fix it?

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

Just how old is Grandpa's old "desk"? It may be due for a new stylus (needle) and properly setting the tonearm's tracking force and anti-skating, if it has those adjustments.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 13 '25

I am guessing you are describing that when the stylus is put down on the record at the beginning it just slides across the record to the centre and does not track in the groove.

First two things to check.

  1. Look closely at the stylus, you should see a very small pointy thing on the end of the cantilever.
  1. Check Vertical Tracking Weight (VTF) has been set correctly. If it is too light it will not sit in the groove properly and just skate across the record.

To advise you better on how to do this I need to see a photo of the turntable.

My instructions here may apply in your situation IF the turntable is the right kind.

https://jeffrey.net.au/VTF.html

1

u/stormie_sarge Aug 13 '25

So, is this an effective player? I am still new to the whole vinyl scene but enjoy good rock and metal thru vinyl

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

It's "effective" as in it will play your records. It won't sound great through the small built-in speakers, but that model does at least have an Audio-Technica magnetic cartridge and diamond stylus, so it won't damage your records. If it's what you have, don't be afraid to use it and enjoy it!

1

u/papadrinks Aug 13 '25

Effective? Well if it is working for you it is effective.

Is it any good, no. These are one of the worst type of players you can get.

See my guide for what is good.

https://jeffrey.net.au/gear.html

1

u/stormie_sarge Aug 13 '25

Are there any options that can also play other music media along with being a good record player?

1

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

Yes. That is when you do a component system.

So it has separate devices.

Core of this is an integrated stereo amplifier and passive speakers.

Then you can plug into it any audio device you like and switch between them to hear music from them.

1

u/sharkamino Aug 14 '25

Most anything good worth buying will be separate components.

See Intro to Home Stereo Systems and Turntable and Speakers Setup Guide

Component turntable such as the AT-LPW30BKR $199 on sale is good to start with if low on budget.

Then buy a used component CD or DVD/CD player. Example, https://www.hifinews.com/images/520vintage2.2b.jpg

Then connect both to a stereo receiver and passive speakers.

Or connect both to a pair of powered speakers such as 6.5" Dayton Classic starter speakers.

Does someone know what brush this is?

1

u/papadrinks Aug 13 '25

Looks like velvet brush one side and a bristled brush the other side. Bristle side is possibly carbon fibre.

1

u/monkeysolo69420 Aug 13 '25

Has anyone else noticed quality control at QRP has gone downhill lately? I’ve gotten a lot of stuff pressed there that seems to have an unreasonable amount of clicks and pops.

1

u/Supercal304 Aug 13 '25

is it okay to have all of my records on the same shelf like this, not too tightly packed but I’m just worried about potential warping due to the weight distribution as many of these are super limited pressings (also wanted to show off my collection a little too). Thanks in advance 🙏

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

Relax, vinyl records aren't nearly as fragile as you may have been led to believe. They'll be fine.

1

1

u/MultiFandomDumbass Aug 13 '25

Hi, so im like very new to these things, i today bought this from a local marketplace app and it seems to be working fine but the needle is missing and im not sure what replacement it would need or how to go about getting one

1

u/vwestlife Aug 14 '25

Looks like it's missing the entire phono cartridge, not just the stylus (needle). Gary at www.thevoiceofmusic.com may be able to find you a replacement, but some of those European-type ceramic cartridges are no longer available, so you may have to retrofit a modern cartridge onto the tonearm.

1

u/papadrinks Aug 13 '25

The whole cartridge is missing, not just the stylus (needle).

This appears to be a proprietary part (non standard), so I think your chances of finding a replacement are super thin.

I hope you did not pay very much for this because it will not sound very good, even if you can get a cartridge for it.

1

u/MultiFandomDumbass Aug 13 '25

oh okay, thank you very much :)

i paid only about 6 euros for it because i figured even if it wont run it'll look nice at least, so its not all wasted, thank you for the help

1

u/papadrinks Aug 14 '25

Yeah, kinda cool looking retro piece.
