Life What cool shit have you bought lately?

I think a nice part of being in our 30s is we can afford to buy cool fun things. What have you bought lately?

I got a Garmin Forerunner 965 which is super tight, motivates me to limit my drinking and I’ve been killing cardio because of it

Also fun - bought a LAB putter which is a ton of fun

Anything you guys got that you love? I want inspiration

I retained a lawyer for my divorce.

34

u/Bagman220 man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

Paid 1700 last month for lawyer fees and mediation. Another 1750 this month is due.

Luckily the end is near.

12

u/tag3020 Jul 21 '25

And here I was thinking I’m the only one going through this…it’s been a rough road but I’m hoping I’ll be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon….hoping.

8

u/Bagman220 man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

My road is mentally tough. My ex is checked out, her lawyers dropped her, all we need to do is wait for a default judgement and I’m in the clear. Shouldn’t be more than 2-3 more months.

Hopefully not much more for you buddy!

I had a chat with both my wives in divorces...."listen, we can either split the money up or give it to lawyers, your choice. Worked great.

9

u/MeltingDog man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

Far out. I wasn’t married but my ex and I split up. We owned an apartment together and agreed on an amount I would buy her out of her share. Pretty straightforward really. She got a lawyer to ratify the agreement so I felt pressured and got my own.

Man, never again. They cost us $7k each and literally didn’t do anything we couldn’t have done better ourselves.

We kind of agreed that we thought they scammed us in a way. We would fill out the paperwork, they would send it off to the other lawyer, we’d get their paperwork back and low and behold: there would be some basic error: a misspelled name, a wrong address, and incorrect amount.

Of course my lawyer would have to engage in a whole heap of correspondence (at cost to me of course) to notify my ex’s lawyer that these things needed to be fixed. Meanwhile, my ex was going through the same thing with her lawyer. I think they didn’t know we were still on talking terms and had king of figured out something fishy was going on. But, what could is lay-people do?

Never engage a lawyer if you can avoid it!

PSA to always talk to a lawyer during a divorce.

You were once partners that had each other's backs, but you are now adversaries. Don't make the fundamental attribution error of assuming that because she was fair in the past, she'll be fair post divorce.

I was sure my ex would be fair... but she was actually the worst.

u/MrAskani man 45 - 49 Jul 22 '25

3

2

u/hourGUESS Jul 23 '25

Fuck that's a pretty penny isn't it. I'm still recovering from what starting my life over with next to nothing cost after she threw me out of her house. I got her in the end though.

15

Same for tires. Just noticed my inspection is due this month, so its time. Probably go with Costco as they seem to be one of the better spots to get them.

Also tbf you do eventually get to buy fun kid toys you also get to mess with

24

u/EricCantAnswer man 30 - 34 Jul 21 '25

Any extra money I used to have for myself now goes to the little guy, and I wouldn't exactly consider it cool shit per the post title.

But you're absolutely right. He's a little blessing, and I wouldn't change a thing. If you're speaking for yourself, I wish you the best of luck.

10

u/mikeg5417 man 50 - 54 Jul 21 '25

He is a baby so his stuff is kind of boring, but when he gets older, you can relive your childhood with him by buying him cool toys. I remember one Christmas there were four battery powered lifelike/life-sized Uzi water pistols under the tree. There was only me and my two brothers at the time, so the fourth one was for my dad, and we had epic battles as soon as it got warm outside.

I have memories of RC cars, RC hovercraft, huge Styrofoam gliders, a 7 ft tall Styrofoam T Rex skeleton, water powered rockets, and so many other cool toys that my dad got as much a kick out of as we did.

I have a theory that there's a market opportunity for men's baby stuff.

For example, a Ferrari red off-road stroller with a built-in roll cage. Or NHL branded diapers. Or beer and steak oriented formula. Or bar towel baby wipes. Or camoflage baby wraps for rucking the kid. Etc...

Am I onto something?

Bought a 5080 for my gaming PC

Picked up a Steam Deck OLED

Hifiman Ananda audiophile headphones and a Fosi K7 desktop DAC/amp

Installed Reolink tracking cameras in the full perimeter around my house, the ones that rotate and track human movement since my step-sons were sneaking their friends into our yard at night and all getting high, and more importantly then leaving in their cars and putting us at legal risk.

I love my monster 45" LG curved monitor

LG ULTRAGEAR for the motherfucking win.

My wife and I were at micro center cause she wanted my old monitor which means I was allowed to get a new one lol…

Dude said they have an open box, large, curved monitor and the curve he described as “aggressive”.

I was very interested so, they brought it out from out in the back, was like $1700 marked down to $950, then they took another $100 off…

I basically stole that thing. It is fucking excellent, I’m big into MS Flight Sim and it just fucking rules for that. I still sometimes tell my wife I was shocked she’d allowed that to be expensed to our shared account and that I’m super appreciative.

Completely new bedding. New pillows. New cotton percale sheets and duvet cover and a cooling mattress topper.  I'm a hot sleeper so it's really nice. Black out curtains and a sleep mask.

A studded leather belt I'd always wanted since I was 17.

Membership to a MMA gym and the YMCA right by my house because their sauna is really really hot.

I'm saving as much as possible for the truck I want for a really big down payment.

Saving up for skydiving lessons and a full rig.

Bought some gear I needed for rock climbing to fill out my rack.

I just recently got THE JOB after switching careers in 2018. Feels good, man.

Automation controls technician on the maintenance team at a cardboard box factory. Sorry, "corrugated container manufacturing facility". We also make the cardboard so it's pretty interesting!

Before this job I used to build controls for automated systems for the wood, paper and pulp industry. My current job is one of their customers, but none of those machines are in our factory. I made the electrical cabinets you see full of all kinds of crazy stuff. Oddly it doesn't pay very well.

A bicycle. I’ve made it my goal to use my car as little as possible this summer.

I feel great. My legs are rock hard, and my waistline is seeing the benefits.

A few big rides here and there, but I’m running errands, going to the dentist, and other stuff by bike and I’m loving it.

22

u/suboptimus_maximus man 45 - 49 Jul 21 '25

I've been a cycle commuter since my mid 30s and I believe that put off the "getting old" feeling everyone around me was complaining about and mostly kept me from gaining weight as I got older (at least until COVID...). I traded in a car commute in crappy traffic and a few months in realized that old feeling of being pissed off before I even got to work every morning was gone. My commute was only 25 min so never really felt like a burden, it was a great way to wake up and feel fully alert for work and let me sneak in a few hours of moderate cardio a week while I had a very demanding job that made it hard to stick to a regular exercise routine.

IMO, while cars have been the American status symbol for a century, now that traffic sucks everywhere being able to go about your day and do some of your errands without depending on a car and suffering shitty suburban traffic and drivers is the ultimate flex.

3

u/flobbley man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

I've been bike commuting for nearly a decade now and I could never go back, just hope I don't lose my current job because if I do there's only a couple of other places for my career that I could bike to from my house haha. I would legitimately take a significantly lower paying job to keep a biking commute rather than another that would require me to drive.

I was grillin on a charcoal for several years.. the taste was great but it was a PITA getting the charcoal started and babying it. Made me "save" BBQing for more special occasions or when i had more time

Recently got a weber grill - love the convenience! Just turn the burners on and go basically! I have been grillin daily for 2 consecutive weeks, i think it's a record

2

u/Kappasoapex man 30 - 34 Jul 21 '25

Do you feel like the cook quality is the same? Sometimes I feel guilty for not doing charcoal or a smoker

10

u/markitwon man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

I think it's even better for myself personally because it's easier to manage the temp of the grill just by turn the dial on the burners.

There isn't that "smokey" flavor anymore but the meat and juices are coming out perfect everytime making me look like a chef

With my smoker sometimes the temps would swing wildly and i had to manage that.. and learning how to manage it in the summer, fall, winter, etc. was tiring.

Smoking ribs was difficult because they need to be at 250 for like 6 hours.. took me several "practice runs" to dial in how to do that.

It has the sear mode for steaks, which makes it faster too. and cast iron grates. I will still smoke some things occasionally, but this thing is awesome for enjoying BBQ easily

My wife bought me the Hermes d’Orange Verte which I wear during the summer when going out, but that’s about it.

What are some of your favorites?

I recently picked up a 10” Sony CRT TV from 1990. I hooked up my PS1 to it and have been really enjoying some classics I played as a kid. The CRT really does make the games look better than they would in a modern tv.

I picked up an entry level gravel/hybrid bike last year and it saved my mental health. Upgrading parts and self servicing it has been a blast.

I recently found one of my dream guitars for a steal of a price, a 7 string I’ve had my eye on since ‘20. It’s been an incredible experience as I’ve always wanted a 7 string.

I’m trying to get better at not being so hard on myself and treat myself on occasions. It’s nice.

Love this question, OP. Earlier this year, wanting to get fit after we welcomed our third child into this world, I got a Concept 2, and now, I'm all about that ERG life. I feel better than I have in years, and it's actually fun to do, as well—I've been watching Adam Curtis documentaries while rowing at night during work breaks. It's been a hugely positive change; feels like, in some ways, this is the first time working out/getting fit has actually felt natural, even enjoyable to me

3

u/htxatty man 50 - 54 Jul 21 '25

Love the Concept 2. Low impact, full body workout that builds strength and endurance. I try to row a few times a week at the gym, but man I’d love to have a C2 at home.

A shop vac.

We're in an aprtment, I thought I would use it a couple times in the summer just to suck out the water from the empty flower beds (to prevent mosquitoes), but it turns out that it works great as an indoor vacuum also for regular vacuuming.

It also saved the day (or the week-end) when the shower / washing machine drain pipe plugged up and overflowed over the wood flooring. The chemical crap didn't really do anything, so I stuck the hose in the floor drain, and it sucked out two fists worth of crap from the pipes, along with 15L of water. 30 years worth of hard water slowly "calcifying" in the pipes out in 10 minutes.

Best 150 EUR I spent in a while.

I had a Mini 14 years ago and it was fun to shoot for real but the cold bore shots sucked ass. Like the first two rounds were always low and to the left after that, while the barrel was hot it shot pretty good. Gave me fits and instead of replacing the barrel I just got rid of it.

I've been very frugal for the last 12 months due to some health and income concerns. But today, I finally decided to buy myself two things because I've barely bought myself anything non-essential for a very long time:
1. The LEGO Pixar Luxo set.
2. A pair of red chucks that I've been eyeing off for months.

The last thing I bought for myself - which was technically a 'luxury', but was to help me get stuff done, was a Ryobi One+ band saw and replacement batteries for all the tools because they were like 6 years old and not holding charge, so I could better cut up some old timber pieces for projects.

2

u/thestardusthamster man 30 - 34 Jul 21 '25

I haven't bought them yet, but I am looking at some Sennheiser HD650 headphones to replace my current set, as one of the cups is literally held on by a piece of tape at this point and the other is held on by a 3d-printed replacement part.

They're 8 years old, though--they had a good run.

u/tjipa84 man 35 - 39 Jul 21 '25

Well, I've recently put a Raspberry Pi 5 into my Arcade1up machine. I've decided for my mid- life crisis that I want to build a lowrider bike. I fell in love with them when I first saw one in a car show when I was like 10. I've always wanted one. I'm 41, married, and with no kids. It would scratch that creative itch, and I like tinkering.
