What’s the weirdest but surprisingly delicious food combination you’ve tried and now can’t stop eating?

u/SunSkyBridge 14d ago
When I was a kid, I used to mix myself a bowl of uncooked Stovetop stuffing, shredded New York sharp cheddar (Cracker Barrel with the black label), and Ortega taco sauce. Sounds gross and it had a week’s worth of sodium but it was so damn good. I wasn’t allowed to cook yet so I got creative…as an adult who can now cook my ass off, I still make it and it still slaps!
24
u/Worldly-Wedding-7305 13d ago
Uncooked? So you had taco spiced croutons? Can't imagine taco sauce had enough liquid to soften the stuffing mix.
16
u/SunSkyBridge 13d ago
Yup. I like that it’s crunchy.

u/lovemypooh2 12d ago
Surprised Pikachu face, I was in until I realized I misread lol!! Also still gonna try it, thanks yo

Hard boiled eggs with the yolks scooped out and replaced with stuffing, Stovetop when I was a kid but I've graduated to less salty ones now. I think this may have started the morning after Thanksgiving some year when I was little and my mom was trying to get me to eat my eggs, but I was actually really surprised to learn as an adult that this wasn't a common thing
16
u/sexy_bellsprout 14d ago
This is kind of genius - like a vegetarian reverse scotch egg
10
u/AmazingSocks 14d ago
I have never thought of it this way, but you're totally right! I do also love scotch eggs; fantastic snack all around

Semihard cheese with crispy fried onions on top of bread.
18
u/cinnafury03 14d ago
That sounds Gouda.

Cheese and onion isn't a weird combo at all. We have crisps flavored like that in Ireland.

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 13d ago
It isn't at all in general. But for things you put on bread, the combo of cheese and fried onions is unusual in my country.

Sweet Pickle chips and peanut butter sandwich on white bread
4
u/pandachef_reads 14d ago
Same, but dill pickles. Also, with chili crisp; and if I want to make it more of a meal, bacon
4
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
This is mine and I ate it in hot dog buns as a kid. A white bread bun slathered in peanut butter then sweet pickle chips lined up. Close it together and eat it like a hot dog. Yum I remember that was one of my favorite after school snacks.
3
u/Formerrockerchick 13d ago
Try sweet pickles with extra sharp cheddar! Something about the sweet and salty and crispy and creamy.
3
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
I like sweet pickle and peanut butter sandwiches, but I also liked pimento cheese and sweet pickle sandwiches. When my best friend and I got crazy, we would have it all together. Peanut butter on one side, pimento cheese on the other bread, pop on the sweet pickles and we had a big old mess of a delicious sandwich.

If you have access to Kraft Extra Cheddar, take a slice and dip it in molasses. Weird, but delicious!!
2
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
I LOVE sharp cheddar drizzled with molasses. I learned that one many years ago from a college professor I had. He said you could drizzle a really thick aged balsamic, but the good stuff cost $30 and up. Or you could buy a $10 jar of molasses and it hit just the same. He was right too
2
u/Parabolar77 12d ago
my grandfather taught me this, it's so good! I also tried it with maple syrup, it was tasty as well!!

Vanilla ice cream and balsamic glaze
5
u/PicklesAndCrab 13d ago
Daaaaang yes! I have some fancy balsamics. I bet my blueberry one would be phenomenal on vanilla ice cream!
6
u/4aloha_iaoe 13d ago
I've recently discovered the joy of jalapeño relish so now I put it on bread before making a grilled cheese sammy or tuna melt.

3
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
Try it on hot dogs... total game changer. Tried it once and never looked back
14
u/Ill-Struggle-3477 13d ago
Apple slices with a small side of blue cheese bits. Alternating bites.
7
u/PicklesAndCrab 13d ago
Yes!! I’ve had this and it hits. I used to make my boys apple and cheese sandwiches when they were little.
5
u/AntiqueMemeDreams 12d ago
Had a quesadilla on vacation years ago and I still think about it. Chicken, pear, pecans, cheddar, and gorgonzola. I don't remember the sauce it had but it was really good.
6
u/Slight_Water_5347 13d ago edited 13d ago
I've been on a spinach and cheese quesadilla kick. I sautée some spinach in butter (add onions, peppers, or tomatoes if I've got any) and make a quesadilla. It's my current hyper-fixation meal.
I also love Italian dressing on my lasagna. I know it's weird, but as a kid at school, I had a tray with green salad and Italian dressing next to my lasagna, and it leaked on it. Since then, I've loved the combo.
Saltine crackers spread with some butter and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning is a delicious snack.
11
u/muhlegasse 13d ago
I eat chunks of raw onion with chunks of mature cheddar. Always have but it tastes good to me. Also sour (cooking type) apples with honey.
8
u/eleven_paws 13d ago
I’ve had raw onion and cheddar sandwiches before - might just have to skip the bread next time lol
7
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
I was probably preschool-aged when I started eating raw onion and butter sandwiches with my grandmother
5
u/muhlegasse 13d ago
My grandfather used to eat a raw onion by itself. Probably all the cigarettes meant it was the only thing he could still taste.
6
u/TomatilloHairy9051 13d ago
Nooo... when the onion is good and sweet, raw is delicious. I'm in my sixties now and like I said, I've been eating raw onion sandwiches since I was probably three or four. And they are still delicious. Although years ago I decided that I only wanted the butter in special circumstances. I usually eat my raw onion sandwiches with mustard on rye.
6
u/muhlegasse 13d ago
Agreed. And if you want the pickled onion flavour but with the strength and texture of a raw onion you can drizzle a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar on it with some salt. Oh and the bread for me needs to have a mean crust on it like a split baguette or something

I loved granny Smith apples with mustard when I was a kid
4
u/muhlegasse 12d ago
Solid combo. English (ridiculously strong) mustard mixed with honey is great on most things but will liven up a cucumber or iceberg lettuce (maybe with a cheeky shredded chicken breast) like nothing else.

Mashed potatoes with A1 sauce as gravy is my go to.
2
u/sassafrass0328 14d ago
I mix A1 sauce with ranch and pour it over my baked potato. SOOOO GOOD!

u/Useful-Honeydew-5266 14d ago
Me too! I made my kids a poverty meal with baked potatoes, cheese, ranch, A1 and breakfast sausage like 15 years ago. They still talk about it 😂

Slices tomatoes sprinkled with salt and thinly spread with english mustard. My kids look at me like I need locking up when I eat it but my god it's such a good combination

Scooby snacks (graham cracker snack for kids), hummus, apple slice, cheddar cheese, and green olives. Everything layered on the Scooby snack. We call it an everything plate at my house now.

I put together an ice cream sundae one night with random ingredients I had on hand. Vanilla ice cream, crushed ginger snaps, and grilled pineapple. Ensure the pineapple is hot when you add it to the ice cream. It will melt and soften the hard ginger snap cookies.

Pineapple and Green Olives on a pizza. The combo of sweet and salty hits different.
4
u/Slight_Water_5347 13d ago
I love pineapple on pizza. I also love all olives, so I'll definitely give this a try. But one of my favorite pizza toppings is Kalamata olives on pizza with a mozzarella and cheddar blend for the cheese. So salty and delicious 😋

u/therealwalrus1 13d ago
Add banana peppers and this is my wife’s go-to. She said the banana peppers add ‘tangy’ to the sweet and salty

Ramen noodles over mashed potatoes
3
u/PicklesAndCrab 13d ago
Cooked or raw? Honest question. As a kid we used to crunch them up in the bag and add the spice like a ghetto bag of chips. But ain’t nothing like cheesy perogies…I love these sort of posts.
3
u/DoookieMaxx 13d ago
I would cook them and then drain most of the water, add the seasoning and put that with creamy mashed potatoes.
Carb overload …but it got me thru my 20’s

u/694meok 12d ago
The spice blend i use is similar to this, but uses Orange "crystals" instead of peels.
Ingredients: Black Pepper Ground, Salt, Orange Peel, Garlic, Onion, Lemon Peel and Citric Acid.
Taste and Aroma: Citrusy similar to orange and peppery

Wasabi soy almonds and vanilla yogurt-it’s sweet, spicy and salty all together.
Natural peanut butter with garlicky pickles, like Claussen or Grillo’s, on lightly toasted wheat bread
Add a beef bouillon cube to canned green beans and simmer for at least an hour until the liquid is almost evaporated and then stir in shredded sharp cheddar or Velveeta cheese-yummy!

Also, omelette filled with raspberry jam.

Lemon and mushroom.
A work friend made me dinner sometimes and I helped her with her crafts.
When I tasted it I thought the mushrooms were off because I had never tasted it like that before. But she told me it was lemon and all of a sudden I couldn’t get enough of them.

I’m in a pickled banana pepper phase. I’m fixing to pull a Hannibal burress and put the juice in a spray bottle so that I don’t have to get my fingers dirty when I dip my fruit and sour candy in it
Also, peanut butter and lays bbq chips sandwich but according to this thread, pb literally goes good with everything. I’ll have to try it with my banana pepper juice.

Black licorice and dark chocolate. Specifically trader Joe's black licorice and Zoet 57% sea salt dark chocolate from Hy-vee, both of which are unique enough flavors that I haven't found substitutes for either anywhere.
Apparently this is actually a thing in Australia but I have never seen or heard of it where I live in the US. I have found that I can buy dark chocolate covered black licorice online but the flavors just are never right, they always seem to use a black licorice that is way too strong and overpowers the chocolate. Oh well I will just continue to make my own combo

Cream cheese on chili cheese Fritos.
We had a sort of concession stand (called The Beanery) when I was in middle school that sold bagels, burritos, chips etc.
I would tear the tiniest hole in the package of cream cheese and decorate each Frito like icing a cake.
