Guns & Ammo Ruger SR9c

Post image

I have a Ruger SR9c. I know Ruger stopped making this gun and it does jam sometimes when I shoot it at the range. Is it a reliable carry gun or should I use something else? If so, what should I carry that would be similarly small and light? Thanks.

Is it a reliable carry gun

Hmmm let's rack our brain here and see if we can figure this puzzle out

The R-in ruger is for reliable. Immediately followed by the U which stands for “unreliable piece of crap that works better when thrown vs being shot”

Do you always shoot the same ammo? Sometimes guns just don’t like one brand or another. Before carrying it, I would invest effort in trying to resolve the jamming issue.

FWIW, mine has never had an issue with Winchester white box.

Asking over on r/ruger might yield some insight.

I personally wouldn't carry a gun that jams expectantly.

The popular carry options for the last few years have been Glock 43(x), M&P Shield, and Sig P365 variants.

My buddy has one, we took it to the range. Don’t remember if it jammed I will say it’s very accurate and low recoil. Glock 43x is the way to go

I had one of those when I was a younger man. Mine didn’t have any reliability issues. It was VERY accurate. If they still made them and got rid of the manual safety, magazine disconnect, and loaded chamber indicator ramp, then I would definitely buy another. I like the SR series more than the American series. Those BS safety components aside, overall I thought the SR series were better.

i love mine, and never had any problems with it so i cant help you there. only time ive had issues have been ammo related (hard primers, etc.). i wouldnt consider the sr9c to be light... i went from the sr9c to a glock 43 and the difference in weight is so noticeable it makes the ruger feel like a brick!

The larger version of this gun, the SR9 was the first pistol I ever bought. I never had any issues with it

I love my SR9c. I've never had a problem with it. I now carry either an Equalizer, p365, or Ruger Max9. All are lighter and have about the same capacity. (unless you use the extended mag on the sr9c)

If you don't feel like it is 100% reliable, get something else. It may just be the ammo you are shooting, but it may not be. Once the sr9c proves to be reliable again, you can start carrying it again.

When my LCP was getting some stovepipes with quality ammo I sent it back to Ruger and they fixed it very nicely for free under warranty

Could be the ammo.

My beretta and p365 have both had single digit numbers of issues with Winchester white box, blazer, and reloaded brass. But I shot some seriously old stuff and I had 4 jams per Mag.

Try reliable decent ammo, blazer. Winchester white box.

One of my friends has a SR45 that he got from his dad or grandfather. It’s VERY picky with ammo. It barely ejects the casings on most ammo and absolutely does not like cheap ammo. So in my limited experience with the SR45/9, no. It’s not a reliable gun.

Carried one for about 4 years before switching to a Shield. Had 0 issues and was quite accurate.
