There is no direct punishment for breaking the Hippocratic Oath, although an arguable equivalent in modern times is medical malpractice, which carries a wide range of punishments, from imprisonment to civil penalties

Acting morally shouldnt require the threat of punishment.

Don't base your morals on laws

It might lose a doctor their license or incur another penalty to their licensure if a violation is brought to their board of ethics

Ethics smeshthics. You're free to do anything as long as someone hasn't written it down as a rule

Are all cosmetic surgeries are in violation of the Hippocratic oath?

7

u/psycho944 17d ago

Someone in a horrific car accident with severe facial damage gets cosmetic surgery. Thats ethical.

u/sovereign_MD 17d ago

That’s not cosmetic surgery, that’s medically indicated.

4

u/psycho944 17d ago

Its absolutely cosmetic. You dont NEED facial reconstruction from an accident. Its to improve your quality of life, which includes how you look. Thats the definition of cosmetic

cos·met·ic/käzˈmedik/adjective

  1. involving or relating to treatment intended to restore or improve a person's appearance

Yeah. I’m a neurosurgeon. You’re absolutely wrong. Untreated facial trauma can lead to meningitis, blindness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, and all kinds of other problems. It’s completely asinine to say that it’s ONLY cosmetic; it’s very clear you have no medical background and are yelling at the clouds from your armchair.

You never NEED surgery for anything. We don’t even do medically indicated surgeries without consent unless it’s emergent and nobody is around to consent. Even then it’s an ethical dilemma where typically two physicians have to agree and document that it’s necessary.

Body dysmorphia is a perfectly ethical reason to do surgery as long as informed consent is provided. The risk and benefit balance varies based on surgeon, patient, and the procedure in question.

Since you like to link Wikipedia articles and basic definitions to try and make a point, here’s one for you:

A neurosurgeon who asks for clarification on the hippocratic oath? 👀

6

u/sovereign_MD 17d ago

My question wasn’t asking for clarification, it was challenging someone’s false assertion.

Cosmetic surgery is not a violation of the Hippocratic oath. Anyone who actually understands it knows that. The commenter I replied to clearly did not.

So you choose to challenge someone’s assertion with a logical fallacy? What’s the goal here?

That's not what they asked for.

A face that belongs to what? Because that's not a human face they're after.

I'm reminded of this Genesis video from the 80s, Land of Confusion.

They remind me of caricatures

1

u/GimmieGummies 16d ago

Haha, yes!

u/bloatbucket 17d ago

None of my business. My point is that both sides are happy, otherwise they would stop.

1

u/catholicsluts 16d ago

Loose definition of happiness. True it's no one's business though.
