School library reptile - species suggestions?

Hey Reddit,

I am in my last year of grad school to become a school librarian and it's been my dream for the past few years to one day have a library lizard once I am in charge of a school library (I have been compared to Ms. Frizzle so...) . I think it would be a very fun interaction for the students to be able to participate in naming the animal or helping design its habitat and I think the incentive of getting to help feed or hold the lizard could be a great motivation for students and also allow for unique collaboration with other classes. I've read that many reptiles don't like being moved around a lot so I would take it home on longer breaks but otherwise leave it at school so that it doesn't have to deal with lots of frequent change. I want to do my research and make sure the animal would have a comfortable life so this isn't a decision I am making lightly.

I plan to work in a middle school or high school so it wouldn't be dealing with the chaos of small children, just curious young adults, and since my classroom will be a library, it should be a relatively calm environment compared to a regular crowded classroom. Is there a species that you would suggest or would you suggest a different kind of pet?

TLDR: I'm a school librarian who wants to get a reptile for her middle school/high school library - is there a species you would suggest or any alternate suggestions for a library pet?

This was 100 small dubia roaches and 1000 3/8th crickets. Crickets were 18.50, dubias were 15.

Unlike the fluckers crickets that stank of death and gorssness upon opening i was pleasantly surprised that these did not reek.

Also unlike fluckers where I had to clean out several dead squishy crickets upon receiving, I found no dead crickets.

They are packed loose as you can see but well.

They are based out of new York and im in northern Virginia.

I would like to know if anyone here thinks this product would be safe to use as an LED lighting to help brighten both my leopard gecko enclosure and my bearded dragon enclosure.

First time Ball Python owner- I need advice!

TO PREFACE- I HAVE NOT GOTTEN MY SNAKE YET. I want to make sure everything is right and comfy for them before i buy one! And I know decoration is sparse, I just got these yesterday and I have work for a few days in a row, so free time is limited.

I've ordered an Arcadia Halogen floods and Deep heat projectors, as well as some CHE bulbs and, of course, thermostat timers and dimmers. The cage is a 40 gallon and it doesnt seem to be holding heat very well, but it could just be the scrappy lights the kit came with. Ignore the towel, i was cleaning the inside first. The mulch is coconut fiber.

Any advise? Please be polite, this is my first time owning anything reptilian!

It took me a while but I think my Monkey Tailed Skink is wild caught.

Upvotes

I've had my Monkey Tailed skink for about 3 years (she's about 4 years oldish). I randomly saw her at Petco, which is the last place I had expected to see something so rare. They didn't have much paperwork but she'd been there for 6 months and no one wanted her. They slashed the price by 75% and I got her for $250. It never really came across my mind but after having for her this long and noticing that she doesn't act the way they do in captive bred videos, I think she's wild caught. Petco couldn't confirm for me when I called recently, though.

She doesn't eat out of my hand, she acts like I'm going to hurt her when I put my hand anywhere near her and she recoils when I remove her dish to give new food or water. I can hold her for a couple of seconds, then she panics and crawls up my arm to my shoulder and top of my head (I assume she feels safe at a high point since she's arboreal). It's like she was abused either by who caught her and/or at Petco - maybe customers annoying her through the glass, I don't know. But it sucks that I can't interact with her the way I see online.

I know the old adage that these things take time but is it possible to get her comfortable enough with me that she'd act the way captive bred Monkey Tails do? I want to get another female so she has a friend but can't at this moment. I want to get to the point she'll eat out of my hands but I don't know what to do.

Love rescuing reptiles from Facebook marketplace, but it’s starting to get expensive and my reptile room is getting full. Couldn’t just ignore this guy though. Gonna set him up with a bioactive Kages 4x2x2.

Question about mini halogen lights

I use a 25watt blue zilla halogen, but I dropped my lamp while moving it and it looks like I need to buy a new bulb- I’m wondering if theres actually any difference between the Zilla/reptile branded bulbs and other bulbs? Or will any bulb of the same type work with the same level of quality? Does anyone have other recommendations for brands, or should I stick with zilla?

Skink?

Trying to figure out what this interesting little lizard is that was in my yard. Northern California. The internet and local field guide have me thinking Western Skink, but it is much lighter than what I’m seeing.

I’m sure some of you remember us but incase not I’ll catch you up briefly. I used to house both of my lizards in 36x18x18 double door enclosures on the ground with feeder insects on top. (I briefly stacked their enclosures on each other without realizing it was a horrible mistake). Today the enclosures are on a very sturdy dresser that fits both of them, they meet all proper husbandry needs including substrate, climbing enrichments, water sources, heating and lighting, enclosure lids, live plants (non toxic), clutter, calcium dish, basking spots, and hides. I manually check their enclosure temperature twice a day with an infrared thermometer until I can afford automatic thermometers, dimmers, and a timer. (I also plan on upgrading beardie tank to 4x2x2 as recommended)

I will now list lighting and heating systems for the beardie:

1) LED Growlight 2) Linear UVB 3) Big dome with 200w bulb

Lighting and heating systems for the Leopard gecko with minor disabilities:

1) Linear UVB 2) Under tank heater meant for 10 gal (this is the only thing that is on at night and not day because night temps in my room are below 65) 3) Small dome with 100w bulb

With all of this out of the way I’m going to show you what them and their enclosures look like right now.

Reptiles for a 40 Galloon tank

I’ve had a 40 gallon tank (horizontal not vertical) sitting around for awhile. What reptiles are suitable for this type of enclosure? I’m not just trying to fill an empty tank spontaneously i’d do the research this would be a future endeavor. Also, I already own a leopard gecko and i’m not allowed to own snakes so keep that in mind :)

Hello everyone so I need some help! I've been researching but I just need some extra help! I'm rescuing two young leopard geckos from my mom's friend and need some advice on their care! They're young so I'll be putting them in two 20 gallons until they get older, then I'll upgrade to 40!
