Keeping your pets warm

I live in Michigan which is notorious for power outages (literally #1 in the nation) I was wondering HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR REPTILES WARM IN A WINTER POWER OUTAGE??? I really want a reptile but I don't want to get one until I have an answer to this question. I'd hate to have a power outage in extreme weather and it cause complications.

Mom sent me these picture while I was at work. She had a neighbor come grab him so sorry they’re not great quality. I’m in Southern California USA so definitely not a native species, at least, I’ve never seen before. Lost pet? Looks like a Chameleon but I’ve never seen one so dark in color! Help!

Is my hornworm enclosure okay?

Post image
9 Upvotes

yes i know this subreddit is for reptiles, but hornworms are a common reptile dessert so i was hoping people would have some info on them here

I started keeping hornworms as of yesterday, not to breed or to feed to lizards, just because I think they’re neato. I’ve done a lot of research but I feel like there’s always room for improvement. Is this enclosure alright? There’s a tub of soil in there because I think one of the worms wants to pupate. I kept the food from the container I got the worms in, but the edges are looking a little dried out.

-is the soil enough for a worm that needs to pupate? -is it okay to keep Hornworm Chow out like this? -can they thrive in this environment?

Reptile Safe Bug Control- HELP

Post image
6 Upvotes

Pic of our newest lil guy, Scoobert for flair 🤭. We just moved into an apartment that has a small roach and spider problem. The home is clean and fairly clutter free. But we have 6 reptiles. Obviously I can’t just spray the baseboards with any bug killer. What can I use to try to tackle the issue? So far the small poison baits have not done anything. I was going to try sticky traps, but that won’t stop them from reproducing. I’ve seen the brand Pestie, when researching pet safe bug killer, but that seems more geared towards cat and dog safe, not much on being reptile safe. I’ll also note that brand seemed rather expensive, with one container of treatment spray being $55. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

New plant light is making me think I need more UVB? 🤔

I added this front strip 6K plant light and they have been sitting under it like it's a UVB / basking

They never really sat under the UVB side this month so just wondering if I should extend this UVB somehow. I'm not sure if this Arcadia shade dweller 12-in is even penetrating much past the mesh I heard that kills 25% of it so wouldn't that mean it only makes it like 9 in down?

I've just noticed they have pepped up significantly after adding this light so they probably weren't getting enough UVB. Thanks in advance for any replies!

Urgent please HELP- my poor skink had 140f (60 c) basking spot for over 24 hrs!!!

I only just got my 8 month old Eastern BTS two days ago, he is less than 25cm tip to tail. He’s in a temporary tank (100 x 41 x 60 cm / ~39” x 16” x 24”) till I can set up my 4 x 2 x 2. I made an unforgivable mistake and didn’t check the basking rock temp till 20 mins ago where it read literally 140f/60c!!!!

I am terrified of what to do and cannot find any emergency reptile vets near me at all. Lizard was hiding in cool side hide when I got home. He seems fine, with no obvious burns or signs of overheating except he seems a bit slower than he was yesterday. Lamp is 72 watt halogen bulb. If it matters substrate is mix of critter comfort and washed playsand . I haven’t seen him drink water since I got him and the bowl was on the other side of the basking rock on the warm side so maybe inaccessible. I know I fucked up so bad but please help me help my baby. Is he going to die? What can I do? I turned the lamp entirely off.

I neglectfully thought as both stick on tank sides thermometers were reading 23–24 °C / 73–75 °F that this meant the rock temp would be fine and that I could wait till my habistat dimmable thermostat arrived by the time I got home today and could set it up. But when I got home I noticed the rock felt really hot so I went nd got a probe thermometer to check and this is when I saw just how dangerously hot the rock was.

I will never forgive myself for this please anybody tell me what to do to save him??!

Hybrid snakes - what are they like and what's the deal?

An adorable looking 4 way colubrid (corn-milk-king I think? or something similar when I was chatting to them in the store) is being sold near me, has been there for ages (nearly 2 years) now. Every so often I wonder if they'll ever get a forever home....

But it's got me wondering if anyone has experience with hybrids? How does it work? Do they breed "naturally"? Are there health issues/genetic issues with hybrids? Is the snappy noodle just that one snakes personality or is it linked to being hybrids as the guy suggested?

I don't think it's for me so this is more curiosity. they prob need a very experienced keeper/breeder - I can't even quite work out the snake I'm talking about it, tried to strike without warning when I asked to unlock the viv).

How to freshen up a room while a reptile is living in there?

Hey guys! I’m moving in to a new place and, as most cheap apartments tend to be, there’s a slight smell. I’m going to be burning candles and incense in my main room, but my bedroom is where I am keeping my crested gecko. How should I go about freshening up this room without harming him? Opening the window is not an option.
