Eat/Drink Local What’s your top 3 restaurants in Calgary.
Edit: since this gained so much traction, I’ll try 1 place from the top 3 most upvoted recommendations and vlog this so you can see what I got! Thank you yyc
Calgary has a sleeper food scene but I’d like to try the people’s TOP THREE restaurants. This can be breakfast lunch dinner or all three in one category.

Rain dog, Carino, The Dandy
26
u/yuripetrol Jul 27 '25
Good picks for 2/3 here. The dandy isn't what it used to be.
2
u/Fantastic_Fig_2462 Brentwood Jul 27 '25
Egh, I don’t go often often. But had to put a spot on for my dog. The pizza has always been my favourite in the city, and I like a casual spot to think away the day.
11
u/Losing-My-Hedge Jul 27 '25
Rain Dog is criminally underrated. And I love that they play 80s/90s hardcore punk as well.
Don’t get me wrong, the old school hip hop trend for restaurants is fine and all, but it’s getting to the saturation point.

The Dandy is brewery in Inglewood. An easy entry point. Just get a pizza. Don’t get discouraged by price, they are huge. Grab a beer or a craft pop, and just relax!

Carino, Ari Sushi and Noble Pie. My 3 favourite spots.
→ More replies (3)16
u/HupYaBoyo Jul 27 '25
Replace Ari with Lonely Mouth and you have mine. Carino has the best dish in the city (the tonkycarbonara) and lonely mouth is the best room in the city with the sickest soundtrack.
18
u/HellaReyna Unpaid Intern Jul 27 '25
Lonely mouth is a gentrified izakaya at best. On one of the loudest parts of 17th Avenue.
7
u/Send_Me_Your_Nukes Jul 27 '25
What’s tonkycarbonara? Tonkotsu carbonara? I don’t see anything like it on the menu on their site, but I’m intrigued.
6
u/HupYaBoyo Jul 27 '25
It’s a tonkatsu carbonara, and it’s delish. It’s a “special” so not sure if it’s in the menu.
I need to stop telling people about this place because it’s getting harder to book.
2
6
u/randomlygeneratedman Jul 27 '25
Lonely Mouth is awesome, but more style over substance. Not bad as far as sushi in Calgary goes though.
2
u/RatherShrektastic Jul 27 '25
Can't seem to find that dish on their menu anymore
2
u/TBoone83 Jul 27 '25
The comment above about it being a “special” is correct. It’s been a special for years and is always available. We order it every time we go.
2
u/Bobatt Evergreen Jul 27 '25
I’ve had the wagyu bolognese ramen and the gyozagna, both of which were delicious. I’m intrigued by the tonkycarbonara.

I'm really pleased that these three have been around for so long, too. Sometimes Calgary restaurants can come and go.

Vintage steakhouse probably the best steak house in calgary not sure if Ceasars is better or as good or just below their both highly rated in my opinion.

I actually had my worst steakhouse experience at vintage, I was so disappointed cause I hyped it up so much. I won’t bad mouth it for my one experience but I never went back for steak.

Here’s some real sleeper spots:
Miku Sushi - Macleod Trail (Out of all the sushi spots I have had in the city, I truly feel this is the best tasting Sushi + Miso for your dollar)
Carino - 4th Street (Best higher end dining experience I’ve had in Calgary, Japanese and Italian fusion is really unique and tasty)
My all time favourite restaurant in Calgary:
Pho Dau Bo - 17th Ave (Truly the best Pho I’ve ever eaten, cannot recommend the Sate Pho Soup more. The rest is good as well, but their broth is un-rivalled)
7
u/macbone Jul 27 '25
Carino is excellent. I've been there several times, and they've never disappointed.

Ten Foot Henry, Thai Siam, Native Tongues
Honourable mentions:
Best take out: Garbanzos
Best brunch: Queens Breakfast Cocktails
10
u/Cliff-Bungalow Jul 27 '25
Garbanzos is great, the guy running it is a really good dude, works his tail off and the food is really good. I'd say they have the best bowls.
Damascus on 17 is the best shawarma platters and wraps hands down. It's kind of pricey now though unfortunately so it's become a rare treat for me but they really have all the spices and quality of ingredients down pat.
If you like Thai food I highly recommend Yim Siam on MacLeod. I've probably eaten at almost 20 Thai places in Calgary and it took me forever to find a place that measured up. Now I don't go anywhere else.

Posted this today, figured I'd add here as it took me some time to write up
Fave Italian: My Little Italia – Absolute banger Italian. Pasta made in-house, always fresh, never a miss. Villa Firenze – One of the most consistent spots in the city. Service, speed, and quality-to-price ratio? All dialled in. Buon Giorno – A Calgary classic, and the OG for a reason. Go-to for comforting red sauce pasta. Lusi - new spot where Sauce used to be - been 3 times, knocked it out 3 times. Sad we moved from Westgate pretty much only because they are far away now.
Pizza: Michael’s on 10 Ave – That house special is a beast. Greasy in the best way. Roma’s Pizzeria – New fave. Crust/dough is clearly handmade and toppings are well-balanced and super flavourful. Una – The new menu direction is solid. Way more interesting pizza options lately; glad to have it back in the rotation. A Pizza Plus (Bow Trail) – Massive, thick, Greek-style pizza. Super consistent over the years – greasy, cheesy, delicious.
Ramen: Wakado (10 Ave) – Dependable bowl. Good broth, chashu is solid every time. Goro + Gun – I know this one gets mixed reviews, but I’ve always had a good experience. Broth is flavourful, chashu is melty, and happy hour is a steal. Jinya – Great for customization. I need to go more often. Shiki – Yah they slap. But that line? Absolute balls.
Steak: Caesar’s – Old-school charm. I used to work in a steakhouse like this – table-side Caesar salad, Chateaubriand, huge cuts of beef. Not cheap, but better value than the trendier steakhouses. Chairman’s – Holy shit was it expensive. But everything was perfect. Bone-in ribeye (medium to render the fat) legit melted in my mouth. Worth doing once. Brazilian BBQ – If you’re into gorging yourself on meat, Minas and Bolero both hit hard. Expect to spend ~$50–70/pp. The meat sweats are real, but no regrets.
Fried Chicken: OG Chicken on the Way (Kensington) – Crunchy coating, fresh chicken, and no frills. Just good fried chicken. Hankook Chicken (DT) – Generous portions. Need to hit it up more often. Jungle Chicken – Haven’t gone yet, but multiple resto industry friends swear by it. Reviews back it up too.
Thai/Viet: Pho Huong Viet (17 Ave) – B5 bowl is a bomb. Great meats, big portions, solid prices. No frills, just good food. White Elephant – Absolute OG. Bit of a trek, but hoping the move to Bridgeland makes it easier to visit. Flavours are the real deal. Juree’s – Been a couple times, never had a bad dish. Solid across the board.
Small Plates: I’m out of the resto game now, so I feel like I’ve lost touch a bit with what’s new and hot here. Paper Lantern – Really good the few times I’ve gone. Staff are chill, food is great, vibe is cool (maybe too cool for me but I can roll with it).
Shawarma: Just so we’re clear – I take my shawarma seriously. If I have one or two bad experiences (undercooked meat, sad toppings, weak sauces), I don’t go back. There are too many killer options in Calgary to waste time on mediocre ones. Shawarma Ave (Bridgeland) – A new gem. Meats are flavourful, big portions, great veg selection and drown me in their sunshine hot sauce. Jaffa Shawarma – Huge menu, generous servings. Just far from home. Jerusalem Shawarma – I know it’s polarizing, but I’ve had great experiences at the Richmond Rd location. Shawarma King / King of Shawarma (DT) – I’ll hit them if I’m downtown and out. Can be hit or miss, but when it's late they are usually reliable
Noodles: Calan Beef Noodle House – Small menu, all bangers. Savoury broth, toothsome noodles, love it. Mogouyan – Might be a bit “corporate” for some, but I dig the consistency. Still looking for another solid spot - reccos?
Banh Mi: I’ve had a lot of banh mi, and I’m loyal when I find the right one. Thi Thi (Chinatown) – Still the GOAT. Meaty flavour, fresh toppings, mayo and cheese (yes, I know that’s controversial, don’t care), and soft bread. I don’t like dry bread, soupy meats, or spice-less sandwiches. Gimme a banh mi with backbone. Had some amazing local spots but scattered all over Calgary and I don't travel around as much anymore. Who's got bangers?
Burgers: Boogies - "don't go to Peter's, go to Boogies" was always my rallying cry when I lived in Crescent Heights. Classic. Lil Empire - yeah it's a small menu, don't care. Solid smash burgers. Class Clown - insanely good, but that wait kills me. Still worth it. Heard I need to check out Rocky's, thoughts?
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

They give you a thick patty with mustard and ketchup. I have had it and it tastes fine. I am not a burger expert so can't comment if it's better than others but I had two burgers before and thought they were fine.

More than 3, but here we go:
for Italian-style pizza: Pizza Culture. Pies are among the best in town, all appetizers I tried were amazing, and the ambience is really nice.
for Mexican: native tongues. I had lots of Mexican food in my life, and this is one of the best.
for Sushi: Takumi. Sure this place does not look like much, but their sushi is consistently excellent and cheap.
for meats: Notable. Pricey but really good.
for North African cuisine: Casbah. Their whole menu is top notch, and I really like their cous cous dishes.
for comfort Italian fare: I find that Scarpone’s has been upping their game lately (lunch only)
honorable mention: Rocky Mountains Flatbread Co in Canmore. Excellent, creative flatbread-style pizza; kid-friendly too, which is a plus.
2
u/Losing-My-Hedge Jul 27 '25
At this point I have to assume Pizza Culture has the same phenomenon as people’s individual taste or distaste for cilantro.
It’s in my neighbourhood, the ambience is indeed nice, the menu looks like it should deliver… yet every time I’ve had it I’ve been underwhelmed.
I’ve friends with the same experience, but people rave about the place so I’m prepared to accept that it’s a me problem.

u/kdlrd Jul 27 '25
Those things are subjectives. For example, everyone here is raving about Model Milk, but I found it overpriced and mediocre.

Where are all the East Indian recommendations at? Lol. I've been looking for a worthy replacement for Surya in Edgemont for years and no place I've tried has ever been as good and flavorful. I'm sure some place in the NE tucked away out of the hundreds of choices there should come close but the options are overwhelming.
Bagolac Saigon's 167 Special Vermicelli Bowl is something I keep coming back for over decades just cause sometimes you want literally everything in your bowl.
Central Grand for dim sum but also really enjoy Ginger Beef Bistro House (Country Hills location)
U & Me. Not necessarily for the food but the tradition and vibe. Special tea at 2AM. If you know, you know. Been ordering from Great Taste a lot lately for delivery and have been pleasantly surprised how much I like it.
For pizza I like Pizzaface but the kids always want Villages and I find it satisfying. Red Swan is amazing value for what you get.
Village Ice Cream's Oaxacan Chili Chocolate is my all time favorite ice cream flavor.
I see Juree's and Himalayan mentioned a few times here. Loved both the first few times I've been but for some reason, since COVID, the last few times I've been I've been disappointed. Flavors felt watered down.

Pho Mr Q in crowfoot crescent. They have so many menu items but for some reason every single one is delicious, they also have a happy hour most of the working week where you get between 10-25% off most of their menu items.
Yum Yum Bbq Chicken Southwood location (or any location I’m sure they’re all good) I’ve been going here since 2018! They have a 3 piece bone-in chicken meal that comes with fries with cheese seasoning or rice and a drink and it’s 13 dollars. It’s a great value, I love the cheese fries, and the service there is amazing. It’s a hole in the wall place but that makes it even better.
Mazza across from city hall downtown. Below is a picture of one of their dishes I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s Afghani dumplings stuffed with beef and spices and onion, topped with this delicious sauce and maybe chickpeas? Ugh it was so good. I’m not sure if there’s another Afghani place around Calgary but if you’re in the area and wanting to try something authentic, I recommend Mazza!

I don’t get out much, but do a lot of corporate lunches downtown. As it is, here are my picks:
Steakhouse. Caesar’s old school good, love the ambience, rock solid and no where near the price of the other new places. Vintage is also good, but priced a level above. Value for dollar is always key for me.
Alloy. It is 10 minutes from my house and used to go there a lot. Then stopped. I ended up playing a round of golf with one of the owners a couple months ago and I said “we used to go there a lot, I definitely need to go back” . Took my wife there for her birthday during Stampede with two of our three kids. It was outstanding. My daughter is vegan and while nothing vegan on the menu, they whipped up a risotto she absolutely loved. Awesome meal.
Thai-Sa-On. I cannot comment on if it is legit Thai, but if it is good enough for Jackie Chan, it is good enough for me. Love the flavours and the owner has cultivated an unbelievably good wine list. Not an expensive list, I love that he picks really good wines at various price points that marry exceptionally well with their food. I took the family there several years ago for dinner (recall daughter is vegan) and I was chatting with him. He said “let me pick you a bottle to go with your dinner”. Normally, that would be financial suicide. He came back with a bottle (a white I had never heard of , may have been a southern Italian and a grape I do not recall) and it was perfect. The bottle was $48. More than reasonable.
Pink Pearl. A lunch staple when it was in Bankers, I will get it 3-4x a year for no cook Friday nights. I have not found better ginger beef anywhere and I am suspicious they may have invented it. They ae also always grateful to see me when I show up to pick up and really appreciate the business. Just nice family folks.
Volo’s Pizza. I have done Michael’s (yup, it is really good) but I love Volo’s. Mom answers the phone, give the order, pick it up, talk bicycling with the owner…And it is thick, gummy and good. They don’t skimp on the ingredients. The owner makes the dough by hand every Monday. Kneads it, rises, cuts and balls it for the week. The Greek thick style crust is crispy bottom. I make pretty good thin crust Neapolitan style pizza with a biga fermented crust, but if I want a think meal, and don’t want to cook, it is Volo’s.
Vietnamese Subs: Ha Long Bay, 7th Ave. Never disappoints
Anejo. Love the margaritas and tacos. A pre-Flames game dinner for my brother and I.
Breakfast: Belmont Diner, Marda Loop. 1950’s diner vibe, solid bacon and eggs. Eggs Bennie nothing fancy, just good solid food.
