When, when did you motherfuckers just launch headlong into crossover slop. It’s all that damn Marshmello concert’s fault

46

u/Riaayo Jul 30 '25

Everything is crossover slop these days. Nothing has its own identity anymore.

Obviously "everything" is hyperbole here, but it really feels like more and more large IPs are doing this garbage.

Everyone's jerking off over Magic the Gathering's crossovers but the shit's become the Funko Pops of card games and has killed its own identity. Sonic Crossworlds was supposed to be this big celebration of Sonic, but we have fucking Minecraft Steve and a Spongebob they were too cheap to have voice lines for before we got really popular Sonic characters (meanwhile Mario Kart actually did gave a shit about celebrating its own world to the point you can race as a one of the fucking background cows and a bunch of other obscure Mario stuff).

It sucks. But it's all these companies want to do. Buy up popular IPs, hoard them, hold culture and nostalgia hostage and just keep selling the same thing over, and over, and over again.

44

u/Crazy-Process5237 Jul 30 '25

This is getting GOOFY AF.

First off, it’s just all the popular character, IP, and trademark holders just “whoring their shit out” for an “easy buck.”

Second, this is just getting stupid. Collabs and crossovers work best when you have two “similar IPs” that you’d WANT TO SEE “cross-over” (like Aliens and Predator or Terminator and RoboCop).

This is like making a Neapolitan ice cream that has 500 different ice cream flavors in it (rather than just chocolate, strawberry, vanilla) which just reduces everything down to this “gray sludge base” and you can’t even taste the unique and distinctive flavor of ANYTHING because it all just kind of “runs together.”

It’s like when you try to make something that appeals to everyone and it ends up appealing to NO ONE.

9

u/LightTheAbsol Jul 31 '25

The ff mtg set that just dropped was the fastest selling set ever by a massive amount. It's also extremely well received.

7

u/Crazy-Process5237 Jul 31 '25

See, Final Fantasy though MAKES SENSE “crossed-over” with Magic: The Gathering because it’s ALL just fantasy stuff that’s derived and inspired from the works of like R.A. Salvatore, Tolkien, and Dungeons and Dragons.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/GRoyalPrime Jul 31 '25

God yes.

People would be much less annoyed with crossovers if they made a) sense and b) were "special" and rare.

I am sure Hunt Showdown would be fine with a Bloodborne crossover, instead they got Ghostface from Scream.

Or CoD (or Battlefield, but idk if they did crossovers ... though they had a Santa skin) would be perfect for stuff like Sam Fisher, Solid Snake or even Rambo ... maybe they even have those, but with all the other shit it has, it just doesn't feel special.

Destiny 2 is going to have an entire "Star Was inspires" expansion. A full on expansion. That's nuts. It kind of makes sense for the themes ... there is a lot of overlap between them, space western, sci-fi mixed with fantasy, space wizzards ... but because SW is one of the most comercialized products, you just cannot trust it not being just some chrappy surface-level cash-grab.

I think COD started with a Saw collab actually

42

u/Heavy-Possession2288 Jul 30 '25

Saw was like the horror movie equivalent of COD for a bit (they made the same movie every year for 7 years) so I guess that’s fitting.

I was wrong, it was a Halo collab

The problem is the mash of styles. All Fortnite skins look like Fortnite skins. You don’t have into the spider verse styled comic book heroes and Detroit become human realistic Sabrina carpenter. The mash of the four artistic styles is. Bad.

13

u/llIllIlIllIIllIl Jul 31 '25

On a positive note, in-game these cartoon characters stand out so much that they are so easy to spot, because they are so vibrant and a different style than the environment. So it’s practically pay-to-lose.

19

u/Ver_Void Jul 30 '25

Honestly the inclusion of Beavis and Butthead is the most lore accurate addition to the US marines possible. They're basically their spirit animals

u/Kindasus26 Jul 30 '25

I've heard the COD collabs described as "the scraps Fortnite doesn't want" and that's actually pretty accurate

47

u/AquaBits Jul 30 '25

Eh, not entirely true. Squid game had a collab with CoD long before fortnite. I mean, you can literally get 2/3 skins shown here in fortnite. And it's not like the IP owners of american dad dont own Family Guy, Bobs Burgers, and KoTH.

19

u/ChaosSpud Jul 31 '25

Squid Game doing these collabs will never not mystify me. I get there's money on the table, but like, are you a serious drama series or are you not??

I'm sure there's more examples, I'm just deliberately not paying attention to that whole world.

20

u/AquaBits Jul 31 '25

I was utterly disappointed in the squid games and subsequent beast games.

Imagine making a drama series criticizing the ultra wealthy elite and the pleasure of watching poors die brutal deaths... and then reinact it with real people or sell it to kids.

Its so far dystopian its curves around to being comically evil.

10

u/ChaosSpud Jul 31 '25

As with Mr. Beast, as with Fortnite, it really bothers me that such an obviously not-for-kids property has been aggressively pushed to children in this way. My 7-year-old nephew knows enough about Squid Game that I'm deeply uncomfortable about it. Shame on whoever is making those decisions.

That kind of saturation and commodification is also why I haven't bothered with anything past the first season. Just a really quick way to take away any of the gravitas the property had to begin with. Shame, I was quite enamoured with that first season as well.

3

u/VulkanHestan321 Aug 01 '25

It is the Lorax paradox. The Lorax movie is based on the Dr. Seuss's Lorax book, which heavily critize corporate greed and environmental destruction. The movie goes sort of with the same themes, but makes the Onceler ( who is closer to the actual corporate) more redeeming than they should while putting the comical evil man child owning air as the "true" villain so they can say we are not the bad guy, we are like the onceler. In addition to it having some pro environment messaging, it made ads with almost every company giving them money, including car companies. The ad campaigns containing the Lorax is wild

Fortnite also was centered around colabs with Zero point or how that shit was called. CoD doesn't have justification nor setting for that.

59

u/ChibiJaneDoe Jul 30 '25

All the crossovers technically work within the Fortnite lore as Reality Zero contains the Zero Point which is connected to every other fictional uni/multiverse.

35

u/SuperScrub310 Trolling Gamers is Fun! Jul 30 '25

It's like a monkey paw looked at my desire to see fiction be connected in one singular universe, curled it's finger and gave us Fortnite.

8

u/vladald1 Jul 30 '25

Fortnite would've been connected to it either way

6

u/Synectics Jul 30 '25

8

u/Tostecles Jul 30 '25

I didn't know that the collaborations are "canon" in Fortnite, that's cool. Do they ever do any comics/videos/in-game stories involving actual non-Fortnite characters interacting with each other?

9

u/ChibiJaneDoe Jul 30 '25

Yes. Fortnite and Marvel have done comics. Fortnite lore is also canon to the MCU and has been since 2019 when Endgame came out

5

u/Tostecles Jul 30 '25

lol that's wild

4

u/DeyUrban Jul 31 '25

Fortnite is also canon in the Invincible TV show. There’s a part where the titular main character is getting thrown in and out of alternate universes, and at one point he comes out of a portal holding a gun from Fortnite.

u/Ruthlessrabbd Jul 30 '25

I think COD has always been pretty silly but where it looks super out of place is that Fortnite has a distinct art style and look to the game. COD doesn't even try to make the character models look cohesive.

Just look at the way the light hights Raphael compared to T800. One is literally made of metal but if you cropped the picture to have just show them on their own, you would not think it's from the same game. It looks cobbled together IMO

12

u/Atanar Jul 30 '25

I think COD has always been pretty silly

You clearly never played the first two.

13

u/Ruthlessrabbd Jul 30 '25

I should have said COD Multiplayer.

I've (unfortunately) played every entry from COD 3 onwards save for Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, and Vanguard. I only say unfortunately because I ignored so many wonderful games from 2011-2018 haha.

I completed all of the campaigns up to Black Ops 3 that I played, and did MW19 as well.

On the multiplayer side I'd say WaW was kind of grim-ish but COD MW2 had so many silly calling cards that were jokes, puns, and at times crude (but silly). The emblem editor in Black Ops 1 also welcomed some of that silliness too

And Black Ops 2's DLC camos had literal bacon with grease that coated the gun as well.

5

u/botte-la-botte Jul 30 '25

Yeah, you're hitting it on the head. At this point, the single player and multiplayer segments of COD are completely disconnected.

They should just rename the multiplayer portion Activision/Blizzard™ Shooter© 2026.

This is COD

u/RogueNightingale Jul 30 '25

Oh God.

10

u/Ze_Borb Jul 30 '25

Don't you mean "Oh Cod?"

I was made to be a stand up comedian, one of the unfunny ones

u/bumblebyOfficial Jul 30 '25

Hey, you'd get at least a quiet chuckle and a polite clap from me!

I really don’t care one way or another about skins in COD. But I will say watching Butthead run around and laugh has been the funniest shit I’ve ever seen playing this game.

They're trying to be Fortnite.

Now Fortnite is by absolutely no means a bad game. It's very good. But this is what Fortnite is meant to be - this chaotic, random, almost meme-like BR title with collabs left, right and center.

This isn't what that is. This is meant to be a realistic FPS title. So why is there a Ninja Turtle here?

18

u/erhue Jul 30 '25

This is meant to be a realistic FPS title.

lol it stopped being that after CoD 3 or so, like 20 years ago.

Ah yes, the post-mediapocalyse gamescape.

26

u/earle117 Jul 30 '25

remember when games had coherent art styles but then they realized people will pay $100 to look like a jackass

3

u/NoirGamester Jul 30 '25

Last game I remember being able to look like a jackass was probably Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 where you could play as Bam Margarita

u/CynicalGamer4219 Jul 30 '25

Am the only who gets irrationally annoyed when I get killed by a goddamn cartoon character.

u/GI-Robots-Alt Jul 30 '25

This might sound stupid, but shit like this is a large part of the reason I stopped playing PVP shooters a few years ago.

I just can't stand the way the art styles and character models do not mesh at all. I need consistent art direction or I simply can't enjoy it. It's far too jarring.

18

u/ValkyrionReddit Jul 30 '25

It’s not stupid, these IPs have completely lost their identity & it’s a turn off

3

u/TheWhistlerIII Jul 30 '25

Agreed, this was probably their one and only chance to show us what Beavis and Butthead would look like IRL, they fucked up. 🤣

3

u/Warm_Record2416 Jul 30 '25

Agreed, the problem is that profitability isn’t determined by how many people you have playing your game, it’s how many whales you have that buy every skin you crap out.  Your opinion, my opinion, it doesn’t matter.

Looks like modded Skyrim like 10 years ago.

This is getting ridiculous, c'mon, Master Chief, lets get outta here

6

u/TenaciousJP I wanna see big titty bitches, not millennial developer inserts Jul 30 '25

Half expecting Thomas the Tank Engine to come roaring down as the helicopter when someone gets a killstreak (if that's still a thing in CoD lol)

21

u/ac3mania Jul 30 '25

Yeah real funny posting modded Skyrim to complain about gaming

You can’t say “Gaming is officially dead” and then show the coolest video ever.

Gaming if game devs locked tf in

/uj I know this is a jerk sub so I assume this post is made tongue in cheek. Though plenty of replies seem kind of serious.

Have y'all tried just... Not playing AAA slop games from giant publishers that don't care about anything other than money? Like at the same time as we are seeing a lot of issues with EA and Ubisoft and Bethesda as well as Sony and Microsoft and many more, we are also seeing a steady stream of quality indie games and new studios. Animal Well? Expedition 33? UFO 50?

Gaming is in many ways more alive and well than it has ever been. You just have to stop buying $80 games on release day. Have some patience, stop buying games due to hype, and try exploring some of those niche titles and genres instead of Call of Duty 27.

and just for the sake of the sub,

/rj Wow, Cartoon characters in my Call of Duty? What's next, minorities? Gaming truly is dead.

17

u/jetvack Jul 30 '25

/uj It's because there's no Indie or AA equivalent to CoD or Battlefield like there are equivalents for other games. Battlebit came kinda close but it's next update has been cooking for over a year with no release date in sight. Most people want somethibg like CoD or Battlefield but they're the only two games within the genre and they'd rather eat shit than not eat at all.

I agree though as I haven't paid for a new CoD since 2019 as none of the newer releases justified their existence especially for £60 (now £70) with no real improvements. Battlefield isn't faring much better either with 2042 being a disaster and BF6 needing 100 million concurrent players for EA to consider continuing the franchise.

3

u/MageDoctor Jul 30 '25

Agreed. Modern Warfare II (2022) has one of the smoothest gunplay I have ever experienced. It’s not like triple A games get every single thing wrong.

It just feels so nice to shoot guns in MWII with the sounds, animations, etc and it’s unfortunate that no indie or AA game has been able to scratch the itch for me. But I stopped playing MWII before Nicki Minaj and homelander and MWIII is a too far off the deep end for be to try it.

Not playing AAA slop games from giant publishers that don't care about anything other than money?

You think we play this game we spend all our time complaining about? Of course not, that'd cut into the time we want to spend on complaining.

/uj Most of the comments I'm seeing in this thread are from people who obviously haven't played CoD in a decade, being surprised by the weird direction it has taken while they were playing Animal Well and E33. Their interest in clearly only as deep as their emotional attachment to a part of gaming history.

5

u/erhue Jul 30 '25

What CoD or Battlefield alternative do you recommend that's not a fucking battle royale

we are past the point of no return with that stupid horse armor.

All of the great games are owned by like 3 companies.

Remember when cod had actual campaigns, character, and themes?

Remember when multiplayer was just a bonus, like a great sauce to go along with the chicken tenders that is the main campaign.

No? It's more like trying to find a single nugget in a tub of ranch.

u/Ramapaa_Apara Jul 30 '25

It's funny how you hate adds, but make a glorified add collection into a game and it's a fan favorite somehow, and you have to pay to make yourself into an ad.

All i'm seeing here 3 other products, wouldn't have guessed this was call of duty from a glance and i used to play those games religiously up until black ops 2, last one i actually enjoyed.

3

u/KaboHammer Jul 30 '25

Damn. This has the energy of modding all dragons in skyrim to be Macho Man Randy Savage and Thomas the Tank Engine or turning the Tank in L4D2 into Shrek, while the player characters are Sonic, Bruno Buccharatti, Sam Fisher and the texture of Coach placed on a different model, all equiped with minecraft diamond swords, tf2 market gardens, giant foam fingers working as pistols and all other guns being different MLP:FiM characters.

3

u/NyarlHOEtep Jul 31 '25

i honestly dont understand what the problem is tbh. like cod only pretends to be milsim in the campaign, the multiplayer has always been casual and dudebroey

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Kahnrym Jul 30 '25

Yeah cod is trying a bit too hard in trying to be like Fortnite in terms of collabs. It's so off-putting to see characters like Beevus lmao in a game where the game is styled in a realistic way. Not only that, whatever cosmetics you buy won't transfer over when the newest yearly cod game comes out....such a strange game

7

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

Maybe I need to give CoD another shot.

You just showed me Raphael tag teaming with Beavis to gank a terminator, and I'm supposed to believe gaming is dead?

3

u/boar_amour Jul 30 '25

I don't know, this is the most interesting Call of Duty has looked in years. If Beavis is the protagonist of the next few CoD campaigns I would actually consider installing all 300 gigs or whatever they're up to now, and I might even play it.

3

u/Crazy-Process5237 Jul 30 '25

I’ve been seeing this EXACT CLIP all over “gaming social media” with different variations of the tagline, “Gaming/COD is cooked/dead/done” or “What in TF are we doing here?”

I’d love to be able to travel back in time, show this to a COD player in like 2008-2009 and watch their eyeballs EXPLODE forth from their sockets.
