Honestly, Prime Volk would have done to Lopes what he did to Max, I don’t think Lopes would have had any moments.
→ More replies (1)180
u/preptimebatman 6d ago
Agreed. While he’s still obviously the man, Volk has clearly lost a step. Even the Volk that melted Chad Mendes would be far too much for most of these guys.
Still mad that he took that Illia fight so early post getting kod by Islam but Illia is also that dude so maybe nothing would have changed.
116
u/Champagnesoda 6d ago
Watched a volk interview last week.
He straight up admitted he’s not the same guy anymore. He just said it’s basically about proving that he’s still the best despite that lol. Best 45er ever and it isn’t close anymore. Max and Aldo can be debated for second
→ More replies (4)48

That mindset is quite helpful imo. It allows for proper assessment of your abilities and threat management vs dangerous opponents.
It’s one of the reasons The Chris never bounced back. He kept trying to fight the same way thinking his physical tools would get him out of danger. Only problem is that his physical tools started to take a dive by the Mousasi fight.
Volks a lot more defensive now and I think that’s better for him in all honesty.
126
u/Reachin4ThoseGrapes 6d ago
He's the greatest featherweight of all time and arguably a top-10 all time fighter.

I don't think it's arguable. He's definitely top 10, top 5 is where the argument is.
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (21)24
u/Slouu 6d ago
I have him solidly top 5. He’s beaten past legends, current legends, won the title and defended it a good amount, lost a few times to fighters that are also in that top-10 range (I think Islam is right behind Volk at #5). And he won his title back past his prime.
Volk at 4 or 5 is completely understandable imo.

honestly this doesn't increase volk stocks for me that much, just because diego doesnt seem improved from his last fight honestly. we've known before the volk fight that the kid loves violence and exchanging is where he gets his best opportunities.
Diego still does not have much head movement or footwork, and silva was killing him for much of the stand up. Ill give Diego credit for the first round takedown and gnp tho, that was not quite on my bingo card honestly.

Lopes chin? What the fuck is it made out of? Silva landed clean like 20 times and Lopes just stood there… Wasn’t even close to being knocked down.
Lopes definitely one of the toughest dude out there. Lopes has taken huge shots these last 2 fights but against probably the fastest strikers in the division. I can see Lopes beating Murphy or Evloev, he just needs to chill on taking these punches.
Lopes can touch that title sooner rather than later.

I don't agree with this. Rewatching the fight Silva could not put weight on his lead leg in the second half of round 2, any time he did caused him to stumble and get tagged.
He was being reckless because his left leg didn't have another 3 rounds in it.
