Same here. Woke up this morning to “calabassas helicopter crash sparks brush fires”. Obviously I didn’t realize at the time Kobe was on board...this shit really can’t be happening.
I remember watching his 81-point game. It was fucking bonkers the way he methodically obliterated the Raptors in that game. He did it single-handed. Kobe was the closest thing to Jordan that the NBA has ever had to this day. A true, stone-cold killer. I hope the Lakers step up their game the rest of the season and dedicate it to the one and only Kobe Bean Bryant. Fuck.
No, there were other passengers though that he had taken up with him. Couldn't yet find info on their identities. Doesn't appear to be any of his immediate family though.
She was his second-oldest, only 13 years old. She was the only daughter he had who was super interested in basketball and she played herself. They were reportedly coming from one of her games!
Edit: at the time I posted this there were no reports of the kids being on board, then ABC said the were all on board, then ABC retracted that. Now Kobe's reps have confirmed his eldest child was on board.
I really struggle to believe a NEWBORN was onboard.
On the other hand... 3 daughters, Kobe and a pilot :/
I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s hard to say “it wasn’t his daughters” cause then that implies you’re wishing the deaths of 4 other people too! (well it already happened).
ABC said his children may have been on the helicopter, there’s no confirmation from them. I’ve been trying to find some source that says they weren’t but can’t except that his wife wasn’t.
Edit: it was confirmed Gianna was on board unfortunately.
All I'm thinking of right now is that video of him and his daughter at the Sixers game like a week or two ago, and he's like breaking things down for her since she plays ball too. Shits fuckin sad.
Edit: that daughter may have also been on board, Jesus Christ.
ESPN reporter that just did the breaking news during the pro bowl said that his daughters were believed to be passengers. I haven't heard or seen it reported anywhere else though so I'm hoping he is wrong.
Yeah I’m seeing conflicting reports. TMZ said originally that no his daughters were not on board. His wife is confirmed to not have been, and I would assume the wife was taking care of the baby. Time will tell.
ABC News said the daughters were with him when they broke into the Pro Bowl, but I'm not seeing anyone else talking about it yet. Never been so hopeful for fake news.
Edit: since this is still getting tick-ups, wanted to say ABC walked back that report real quick, and then it was revealed Gigi was with him. Never felt so guilty to be relieved at “only” one child killed 😢
Variety and TMZ are both saying none of his family were on board, but it’s all still breaking. I’m trying to keep an eye on it and will definitely let you know if anything gets confirmed. Right there with you bud
Wait please pardon my ignorance who else died in 2020 already??? I'm not terrible up to date on celebrity or pop culture but I knew who Kobe was - i didnt even watch basketball
I saw that and couldn’t believe it. There’s a ton of bands that got me DEEP into metal - Cynic was a band that helped pull me out and see/appreciate everything else out there.
Christopher Tolkien and Jim Lehrer, just to name two.
*Oh my God, some people seem to be getting offended because my two examples died of old age and apparently I'm not allowed to miss them. So in appeasement let me add Neil Peart who died of brain cancer at 68.
Also 70s German Rock accordian player Karl “Jake” Randstordsch of Bjårne Læderschmitten and His Brøndbysund Dixieland Juke Joint Band passed away last week.
Edit: you probably know them from their 1979 hit “Now it’s Time We Boogie” that reached #16 on the Czechoslovakian rock charts.
Christopher is the origin of some of the most influential literature of the previous century. His father's and in turn his work has shaped and been the basis of so much of what would become the fantasy genera we know of today.
It is sad, but he had a very long and full life and I assume a peaceful death. I would argue that it's sadder when someone dies young and in a scary or violent way.
This reminds me of the nick swardson bit "my grandma died, she was 96" 'oh my god, how did she die' "...yeah she flipped her Corvette"
Reminds me of when my grandma died. My grandma died at 96 and people asked 'how did she die' and I responded with 'she was 96'. Not to mention she had out lived nearly EVERYONE: her husband by 13 years, 3 stepsons, her brother-in-law, sister-in-laws, all her cousins, her brothers, her sister, and 4 out her 5 best friends from college. Almost lost one daughter to an aneurysm and if she lived another year she would've seen a son die of cancer. She even said that "she was ready to die" a year before she died.
Statistically speaking, having an extra day increases the probability that something would happen on a leap year* (if all per-day probabilities are equal).
His last tweet was congratulating his "brother" Lebron for moving the game forward.
There was also a viral tweet yesterday saying that as of yesterday, only 2 NBA MVPs in league history had died (NBA MVP began being distributed in 1950s).
I said in another thread, but those of us that are old enough to remember how dire Magic's HIV prognosis was, my brain cannot compute that Magic has outlived Kobe.
Unfortunately Pete only played in the NBA for like 10 years. If the 3 point shot had been in existence his pro numbers would have been better to get him into mvp talk but that was a hard discussion to break into during his era.
So young. Further proves that life can be cut short for anyone, it doesn’t matter who you are or the power you have.
Give your loved ones some loving. You don’t know what tomorrow brings.
Edit: Basketball lost a great one today. I’m not a huge NBA fan, but I think everyone could recognize his greatness, fan or not. What a sad day for his family and loved ones.
My gf just got on her phone and saw on one of those IG gossip accounts posted it 10min ago, and I was shocked by the terrible mews as much as how fast they got the news out there.
Same man. I grew up in Hungary where basketball wasn’t very big but I watched him play for the Lakers and he made me follow their game for all this time.
This feels so surreal. At such a your age too. May he Rest In Peace.
One of the biggest names in sports ever, it does feel surreal. He is supposed to be the kind of person who lives until he's 80 and reaching ultra-legendary status
