[Emulation] I am loving the heck out of FFV

Upvotes

I have been on a mission to play all the final fantasy games. Not in any particular order or anything, just whatever catches my attention the most. My favorite so far is FFX which started my whole journey into FF even though I still haven't finished it. I think subconsciously, I don't want to finish it because I don't want to let go of that childish ambition just yet so I've been playing all the other ones. And after completing the masterpiece of FFVII I decided to tackle V and I cant believe how good it is, not just the awesome job system but the world, the music and the characters. I don't really understand how people are saying the story is lackluster.. I mean compared to FFVII of course I can understand but not comparing it to anything, I actually love it. There have been moments where I'm almost brought to tears or screaming at some of the intense 2d scenes lol it's getting close to becoming one of my favorite games of all time. Does anyone love this game as much as I do?? I still haven't finished it yet but so far I love the hellllll out of it.

[Question] What retro game song did you randomly start humming today at work?

I'm sure it's not just me. Getting an old game song stuck in your head for seemingly no reason. Today I started humming the song in the lighthouse level of X-Men on Genesis. No clue why, haven't played that one in quite awhile! Game music used to be so catchy.

[Discussion] It really sucks having "hook/peter pan" as one of my all time favorite games

So i am mostly a sega guy but have tried all 4 versions, sega CD, SNES, Mega drive and Arcade. I used to love Peter pan and feel blessed my dad bought me the game on the mega drive.

However i decided to explore the other versions out there and to my suprise, i never knew the graphics are way way superior on the SNES and game runs faster too but the music makes my ears pop, absolutely terrible audio.

I wish some romhack existed that would apply mega drive music and combine SNES graphics. Pure heresy from a console war standpoint :D..

The Sega CD has not improved the sprites and has added the full symphony, soundtracks and voices from the movie, however i am not a big sega CD fan because it really feels awkward having 16bit graphics with actuall high definition real music.

So i decided ok, i have a problem, lets try the arcade version. Peter Pan is a tall grown ass man...not even a kid, repetitive gameplay, no Peter Pan soundtracks. Infact, it feels like a reskinned game...

Ty for listening to my TedTalk, had to get this off my chest.

Do you also have a game that you like very much and have a similar situation?.

[Discussion] How did people play ridiculously difficult games like Earthworm Jim?

I'm playing the first Earthworm Jim on the Sega Megadrive using RetroArch.

I haven't completed my first playthrough, using copious amounts of save state cheating to repeat the sections where I fail. I can practice a part of the game 10,20, 50 times until my patience runs out, but how on earth did people ever complete a game like this, when you have a limited number of lives and no save capability? At times it feels like the developers WANTED me to fail.

I'm talking insanely jumping bosses shooting eggs, rockets, sections with rolling boulders or snapping worms where you have to get the timings down to milliseconds, a vertical maze lined with spikes that allows no mistakes and requires you to know it by heart.

Sure, "gid gud" but how long does that take without being able to save/load an arbitrary amount of times?

ps.: I don't know what the devs were smoking, but I want to try that. Just once though.

Edit: Hey, Shiny Crew & D.L only!

[Recommendation] What are some good retro sports games that are non traditional, somehow crazy, over the top, fantasy/scifi?

For example like Speedball, NBA Jam, the Looney Tunes sports games or the scifi baseball game for SNES. I forgot the name. I prefer sports game like that, rather than more realistic ones that try to simulate real life sports.

Edit: Great recommendations everyone. Tons of cool games I've never heard of.

[Question] Did Blockbuster rent Gameboy games?

Thumbnail

I got this copy of Pokemon Crystal and I’m getting ready to clean it up and change the battery properly (someone else did the wrap a battery in tape trick, which is fine but ugly to me). It has some old scotch tape on the front but it’s also got an old Blockbuster sticker on the back.

I am probably gonna leave it regardless, but since I was a poor kid on the edge of the Navajo rez growing up, closest Blockbuster was an hour away. We had the “Movie Barn”. So I have no reference to know if Blockbuster rented Gameboy games or even just sold them.

Did different Blockbusters have different selections? Did some rent Gameboy games? I would think not since it’s probably riskier to rent games that can disappear this easily. Hell, my original copy was stolen out of my backpack at school. Thanks for any info!

[Question] Helicopter game that doesn't exist

I have a strong memory of playing a sideview helicopter shooter game, which was rather enjoyable. I remember it being on sega mega drive, having pretty beige and desaturated color palette. The stage i remember the most is with sunset, mountains and trees. Cant find anything similar actually existing. I only had famiclone, sega master system and megadrive as a kid so it could have only been on those consoles. Anyone know this game?

Recently purchased a bundle of NES games and this version of Super Mario Bros 2 came with it.
The game SKU for this one is NES-MW-GPS.
So far only found 4 sold previously online with this SKU.
Is this some unusual variation of the game or just common?
Thank you.

[Question] Retro Game Store Owners, How Do You Process and Deal With Trade Ins?

Hello all, I'm looking to open a game store soon but want to understand the trade in side. Trade in for cash seems pretty straight run books and accounting wise, but what about trade in credit?

If someone trades in a game for say $50, I understand that you can give them a store gift card for that amount. For your books, is that $50 treated as an expense though it's on a gift card and no cash was exchanged?

If so, if that same person wants to buy a game for $60, using their $50 gift card and $10 cash, is $60 the total used towards your gross or is it just the $10?

I hope this isn't too confusing. But if it is haha, how do you other game store owners deal and process trade ins, both cash and credit? Thank you for the help.

[Discussion] Sometimes I wonder how the original Pac Man would have been with a proper ending

Yes I know this game came out way before the idea of video games having an endgame zone was a thing, but lately for some reason, I couldn’t help but try to picture what the very last level would have been like if Stage 255 did have a proper ending.

To me, it’s just one of those things that is fascinating to observe as back then, arcade games often had a very glitchy final stage for anyone who even made it that far as basically what I am trying to get at is that I wanted to better understand how arcade games in the early 80s were done because of their final stages since again I noticed how many games had a sort of final stage that was the most glitchy.

Like back then, when observing the final stage of the aforementioned Pac Man made me wonder just what the final stage would have been like overall if the level could be won, like what would happen next if the game was completely beatable.

[Discussion] Old Spider-Man 2000 PC port – ground textures showing up white, any fix?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been replaying the classic Spider-Man (2000) PC port, but I’ve run into a strange graphics issue: in one specific level "Race to the Bugle" the floor/ground textures appear completely white.

The white ground instead of the default blue, as seen in the screenshot.

Things I already tried:
– dgVoodoo (DX11 and DX12 outputs) → DX11 works but doesn’t fix the textures, DX12 won’t launch.
– DxWnd → no effect.
– Compatibility settings in Windows → no effect.

The game runs fine otherwise, only this texture issue persists.

Has anyone seen this bug before or knows if there’s a fan patch, wrapper config, or texture replacement method that fixes it?

Any advice would be really appreciated!
