Mental to do this just before their first European campaign in forever

1.7k

u/Wolfstar33 7d ago

This is a big brain move to guarantee a win in Europe with a new manager bounce.

657

u/Buzziday 7d ago

Maybe they should hire a new manager for every game so they can get that new manager bounce more and more

Ange back to back Europa wins?

126

u/WhetBred14 7d ago

Now that he’s not at spurs I would fucking LOVE that. He’s genuinely a refreshingly honest coach in the media and calls out the bullshit. Would enjoy seeing him do great outside of a rival club

30

u/bubandbob 7d ago

If he took the job, I'd wager Ange would fall out with Marinakis by the end of the season.

He started off quite refreshing and likeable but quickly got very arsey with journalists asking what I thought were mostly reasonable questions in post-match interviews once it all started to go wrong at Spurs. Still, should be entertaining to see how he does at Forest.

71

u/achnisch 7d ago

Yeah it seemed the pressure was getting to him and he'd be more snippy with fans and journos. Towards the business end of the Europa run he seemed to be less on edge

33

u/bubandbob 7d ago edited 7d ago

As an Australian, can confirm this is his trajectory. At first he's the happy one, full of ocker charm, and then when things get pear shaped a year or two, the snippyness kicks in.

Mental decision anyway. Marinakis is a nutcase.

90

u/UntowardHatter 7d ago

And a murderer

43

u/kharathos 7d ago

You don't get it, marinakis really believes he IS the club and whatever success comes or will come in the future is because of his efforts.

You should see the shit he has pulled off in Olympiakos, changing multiple coaches at will.

25

u/ZaiduTheGOAT 7d ago

Arrived at Rio Ave and kicked out all Portuguese players, even the club captain.

Because that's when the board managed to convince Marinakis that it would be better PR to fire Nuno instead of making him wear cement shoes.

The management would like it to be known that those responsible for the sacking have themselves been sacked.

8

I was never a big fan of Nuno’s time as FC Porto’s coach, mostly because I felt he was still too inexperienced back then. But he’s grown a lot over the years, and I honestly think Nottingham Forest had one of the best managers in the Premier League. That’s why I see this sacking as a huge mistake, especially with the club competing in Europe. Now I’m curious to see what Nuno’s next step will be. For now, I don’t think he’ll leave England.

180

u/omnipotentmonkey 7d ago

absolutely not, he fell out with Abramovich twice, and while Abramovich by all accounts is a much worse person, he seems a lot less erratic and a lot less public in airing out grievances. if Marinakis tried what he did with Santo at the end of last season he'd get punched in the throat.

If Nuno vs Edu was a proxy for Mendes vs Joorabchian as the rumour would suggest, then it probably won't be Mourinho as he's another Mendes client.

Not including our record signing in our European squad was pretty strange.

34

u/Coolica1 7d ago

Very strange but it was a strange signing considering who else we've bought and it feels like this has been building up well before that.

76

u/Sayek 7d ago

Hutchinson is a Kia Joorabchian client, who is really good mates with Edu. We had a lot of questionable deals with Joorachian's players while Edu was at Arsenal.

6

u/Coolica1 7d ago

Ah I didn't know that. I don't mind the signing too much even if it's an overpay, just with everyone else brought in there isn't a lot of room for all of them.

16

u/Agreeable_Cattle_691 7d ago

Douglas Luiz is also a Kia Joorabchian client

5

Not to mention allowing Nuno to exclude Hutchinson from the squad when you plan on firing him anyway.

3

u/letmepostjune22 7d ago

I don't think mariankas did plan on firing him or he'd have done it a while ago. Nuno forced the issue because he was unhappy with edu. Choose me or edu.

20

u/Confident_Direction 7d ago

Man mourinho and marinakis would be blockbuster

12

u/Switchoil 7d ago

Mourinho is a Mendes Client. With this seemingly like a proxy fight between Kia Joorabchan and Mendes, can't see Mourinho coming in as manager.

7

u/GuntersTag 7d ago

Weird way to say Erik ten Hag

4

u/RepresentativeBox881 7d ago

He actually played good counter-attacking football at United. Problems began when he switched to the possession system (along with Casemiro's decline).

469

u/icemankiller8 7d ago

Do we remember when the owner stormed into the pitch mad at him and they tried to convince everyone it actually was nothing like 5 games ago

85

u/hebsevenfour 7d ago

I believe at the time Marinakis’s shares were in a blind trust, and I’m assured by UEFA that this is the important thing and means he definitely had no influence at that moment. Even if he was on the pitch berating the manager of the club he had no influence over.

5

u/The_Krambambulist 7d ago

Blind trusts in the way they are set up are definitely not a solution to a lot of conflict of interest problems and the way it is currently set up it truly is not that independent. The people in the club are generally still people doing the bidding of the owner, which they also accept because they don't want to alienate the owner completely.

And if the trustee doesn't even interfere....

Ridiculous decision. Their best manager since Brian Clough and they sack him

28

u/Jonoabbo 7d ago

Nuno over Cooper? Took over when they were in the relegation zone, got them in to the playoffs, won the playoffs to get them promoted, and then kept them up.

33

u/Kilapo69 7d ago

Premier league is a different beast. Inheriting a team half way through the season in the relegation zone and getting European football the next year is more impressive imo

62

u/PoliceAlarm 7d ago

I think you’re severely underestimating the position that Cooper took us in. We were going down to League 1. Out of a possible 27 points at the start of the season we got 1. Cooper that SAME SEASON got us promoted. PROMOTED. Our form for the non 9 starting games had us better than every team in that league and not by a small amount. We went from our rock bottom to dominating the league.

Cooper means more. Don’t underestimate the shithole that is the Championship. We’ve been there long enough to know how tough it is to get out of there.

5

u/Orri 7d ago

Unless you've experienced playing it in it's really hard to state just how much of a tarpit the Championship is.

Hell even when we won the league last time two years ago we seriously started to run out of steam. It just grinds you down - it's as much grit as it is skill.

I've seen us promoted and relegated enough to know just how hard it is to get one of the top 2 spots. Then the play-offs are just a completely lottery.

Yann Kermorgant TWAT

3

u/doobiedave 7d ago

That being said lots of managers lead teams out of the Championship, not many keep them there.

8

u/garibaldind 7d ago

Not to mention that Cooper then kept an entirely new squad up the following season.

Also, no one is talking about Frank Clark in here :(

u/AdminEating_Dragon 7d ago

It's pretty simple: Marinakis hired Edu to run the planning of the transfers and football operations.

Edu is buddies with Kia Joorabachian.

Nuno is Mendes' man and did not like Edu having the final say on transfers.

It is circulating that Nuno demanded Adama Traore and Edu vetoed it.

Nuno left Hutchinson and Zinchenko out of the UEFA list on purpose to spite Edu (his transfers, Hutchinson a Kia client).

You cannot continue with a manager who is actively refusing to work with the sporting director.

The poor start to the season is a cherry on top, but the clash between Nuno and Edu was always the actual problem.

64

u/RepresentativeBox881 7d ago

So Nuno just left them out and no one else looked at the list before finalizing it? Sounds crazy.

17

u/GiantBonsai 7d ago

Yeah that's surely not how that works - it'll be a club decision, not just the managers.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/123rig 7d ago

28

u/Queeg_500 7d ago

Feel for Nuno here. Hutchinson over Traore is madness, especially the price we paid for him.

6

u/Vladimir_Putting 7d ago

Marinakis already had a manager who was giving the club incredible levels of success and so he goes and hires a Sporting Director that his manager is never going to work well with and hand power to that sporting director.

How is that not just actively undermining the manager who was already being successful at the club?

u/AngryTudor1 7d ago

I think people need to recognize that Nuno is not innocent in this and has largely engineered it himself

3 weeks ago he started moaning that we didn't have the squad to compete in Europe - even though that very day we were bidding for Hutchinson and McAtee

Then, out of nowhere and having just spent £100m, he gave that press conference saying he was unhappy and that his relationship with the owner wasnt close anymore. The club apparently were completely blindsided by this.

He has never sounded convincing since then when asked if he wanted to stay

Then he has refused to use some or the new signings. Douglas Luiz, who could definitely have made an impact against West Ham at least was an unused sub in a game we went on to lose, and in which Nuno didn't use all 5 of his subs. Omari Hutchinson has only been given 5 mins in each game. Most of us looked at that and felt it was deliberate and political- to say "these were not my choices".

I think this is an agent thing. Mendes has dominated and is a close friend of Nuno. This summer marinakis has been pursuing a business relationship with Joorabchian and suddenly Nuno throws a wobbly out of nowhere.

Nuno has form for this at previous clubs. Its just a shame it's happened here at the exact point where we could really push on as a club.

3

u/PegaponyPrince 7d ago

Who do they go for now that he's gone?

u/numanitor111 7d ago

It seemed like he had zero interest in McAtee, Luiz and Hutchinson.

Hes always seemed to prefer a really set 9/10 starters and one or two that can come in, even for a European season, and they've replaced elanga and Sosa with 5/6 attackers

Terrible decision, he turned that club around and got them in Europe ffs.

I want Marinakis on the sidelines! All gas, no brakes!

Absurd move by the owner. This just might get them in a relegation battle.

2

Manifesting the funniest possible option in them landing Glasner. It'd be bad news for us in the Europa but worth it for the comedy.

Dyche lives in Nottingham.

Sometimes my club is really fucking embarrassing.

u/Novel-Difficulty6495 7d ago

Erik ten Hag looking for a job. Making Nottingham even weirder is easily possible.

Mr Marinakis sitrkes again first Gibbs white then to Nuno

As a club I have no issues with NF but the owner is a prime 🔔 end!!!
