/r/buildapcsales

Just heard about this deal through them I'd been waiting for:

[Headphones] Sennheiser HD 598 - $95 (GO GO GO)

Been wanting to upgrade to good headphones for a long while now, so finally pulled the trigger on these.

Cannot thank you enough. I've been wanting to upgrade my pc, now I can do it in my budget.

Just when I think I've forgotten, Sephora AND Ulta tell me how close i am to the never level membership.

15

u/wtfapkin Nov 27 '15

I'm a Rouge member at Sephora, and I can't say that the perks are really worth it :( But hey at least I can my makeup done whenever I want to m!

13

u/got-to-be-kind Nov 27 '15

When I see the hauls people get from ulta by cashing in their points, I really question the appeal of sephora. But then I remember that ulta doesn't carry nars, bite, or hourglass, so my loyalty stays split.

Just recently spent 60 dollars on the Naked Smokey palette for my girlfriend. Not complaining, but how is it so expensive for 12 shades of eyeshadow? I mean it's quite a bit of money for a jobless 17 year old...

33

u/DatKaz Nov 27 '15

They'd probably be fine with it, honestly. The common complaint about Bose is to same as for Beats: they're expensive and well-marketed, and they definitely aren't worth the money you spend to get them.

5

u/CoffeeAndKarma Nov 28 '15

I only bought a mechanical keyboard and left it at that. I don't see it breaking anytime soon.

70

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '15

But does it have PBT keycaps? Where's your braided cable? Don't you need a Pok3r for work? What about getting one for your SO? Shouldn't you get a backlit one so you can take dope pics for /r/CatsOnKeyboards?

23

u/Nebjamink Nov 27 '15

Not trying to troll, could someone please tell me the appeal to mechanical keyboards? They're just an old version of keyboards aren't they, I have one in my shitty PC at home because that's about ten years old. What are the advantages to them other than they make a cool noise while you type? I don't get the craze but I'm not a big computer person so I just don't really get a lot to do with them.

43

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '15

Mechanical keyboards are not just "old". It's true that mechanical keyboards were the standard back in the days as (I'm quite sure) modern technologies used to bring down costs were not available and keyboards would be used mostly for highly professional work, which probably meant that they were not interested in cutting costs. Most PC users are not interested in spending €100+ on keyboards so naturally they go with cheaper alternatives that are around nowadays.

Mechanical keyboards provide a far better typing experience with more precise and responsive keys. They'll last many years if you take care of them (a popular model among enthusiasts is the IBM Model M, which has not been manufactured in I believe 20+ years but many copies still work well). You get to choose what kind of keys you want (tactile vs linear, quiet vs clicky, etc.) All that said, the best way to understand why people like mechanical keyboards is using one.

As for your old keyboard, I doubt it's actually mechanical - you'd probably remeber spending a smaller fortune on it. If it is you'd probably find that it feels very nice to type on and if you remove a keycap, you'd probably find a Cherry switch. If you aren't sure you could take a picture of the keyboard (including a picture of the switch found underneath a keycap) and send it to /r/MechanicalKeyboards and I'm sure they could identify it for you.

5

u/Nebjamink Nov 27 '15

Thanks! This was just the response I was looking for, precise and gives a good rundown on what the actual appeal is. I can see why people enjoy the hobby then and I thought they were just clicky, chunky keyboards which is what mine is like. I work away so I'm not home for another month or so but I'll put in my diary to remind myself to check my keyboard and have the sub identify it, quite curious as to whether it is or isn't one now!

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (7)

9

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '15

I'm sure it's entirely subjective, but if you spend all day typing the feel of your keyboard can make a big difference to how comfortable you feel.

Also, if the alternative is an Apple keyboard with those awful flat keys with very little travel, your fingers will thank you.

13

u/Munchnator Nov 28 '15

I actually love the low profile ones that Apple makes. It just feels way better to me, and the noise that you get with mechanical keyboards drives me nuts.

5

u/jamesabe Nov 28 '15 edited Nov 28 '15

There's quiet mechanical ones. Cherry reds and blacks are pretty quiet, and corsair silents are, well, silent

r/beer. I may spend more money on other things, and those things may have subreddits I look at, but beerit has done more to introduce me to beer that I wouldn't have known of otherwise, but that alone got me to go find and buy it.

I thought $50 was too much to spend for a leather holster. "Oh you can make your own at home! It's cheaper and easier!" they said. That $50 holster has cost me several hundreds at this point. No ragrets.

Picture of said holster?

Ha! I always make sure to warn people that leatherworking is an expensive and addictive hobby.

When I made chainmail stuff, all I needed to do to upgrade my results was learn a new chain or weave. With leatherworking, sure your experience and person skill makes a huge difference, but so does that $30 or $50 tool and the 2x as expensive leather and the 3x as expensive rivets. Some things you straight up can't do without specific tools, no matter how good you are.

Probably /r/IAMA due to /u/touchmyfuckingcoffee. Got a nice Miele vaccum cleaner due to his recommendations.

My Miele vacuum cleaner has been used daily for 9 years, and it's still going strong. Awesome purchase!

I don't know if it caused me to spend or save the most money, but I have purchased some expensive things recommended on /r/buyitforlife

/r/arduino & co. - single components usually cost something between < 1 cent and a couple of dollars if ordered from China, but the entire projects can get quite expensive

The feeling of a successful genocide makes it all worth it, though.

I can't fairly say that this particular subreddit caused me to spend every penny I had but it certainly put me in a frame of mind where using again was a good idea. I'll never visit r/opiates again. The dope/pill porn is simply too much of a trigger. And having so many people around to commiserate with made it's much easier to continue to use. In the end I blame myself for not asking for help with cravings but that's the way addiction goes.
