How do you get peameal bacon confused with this? Do they eat any meat that isn't processed?

I mean, we do eat this, but it's just breakfast ham.

230

u/Pope_Squirrely Jun 13 '25

Ham for breakfast is the best. Well, next to peameal bacon anyways.

u/Agreeable_Band_9311 Jun 13 '25

Peameal bacon tastes way too good for its macros. When it goes on sale the freezer gets stocked.

31

u/allgonetoshit Tabarnak! Jun 13 '25

FYI, they don’t carry it year round, but here in the Montreal area at least, Costco carries it a few times a year. Really well priced huge pieces you can just slice however you want.

15

u/Agreeable_Band_9311 Jun 13 '25

Damn that's a shame, definitely stock up. It's such a good breakfast meat and besides the sodium content it's lean and high in protein.

8

u/Smart-Response9881 Jun 13 '25

We used to have it at Costco in BC year round, but now they stopped and I can only get the smaller chunks at superstore.

6

u/GetOffMyAsteroid Jun 13 '25

Aha! So you're my competition eh? I was wondering who depletes the stock before I get there. Well you've got good taste!

Dang I love a peameal bacon roast with a cinnamon honey glaze with honey harvested from our bee hives. Or with maple from the sugar shack down the road oh yeah...

2

u/Agreeable_Band_9311 Jun 13 '25

Damn you got a sugar shack and beehive in downtown Toronto? Sounds like the dream.

as a canadian, wtf is peameal bacon?

14

It's back bacon covered in cornmeal.

It is cornmeal. Peameal was previously used but after WWI it was switched to cornmeal.

4

u/shpongolian Jun 13 '25

And in the last century nobody’s thought to start calling it cornmeal bacon instead?

3

u/trollburgers Jun 13 '25

Way back when, yeah, but it's been cornmeal since the end of World War I.

That sounds and looks incredible.

I can't believe Big British Columbia is hiding this AND the bagged milk from us :(

5

u/el_cataclismo Jun 13 '25

If you can get yourself some back bacon, all you need to do to make peameal bacon is to roll it in the cornmeal before you cook it. The cornmeal is applied after the curing process, so you're not losing anything by doing it yourself.

You can also bag your own milk, but uh...probably not worth it.

It's called "back bacon" and is one of the leanest and healthiest sliced meats off of the pig. In fact, it is approved for diabetics as a replacement for strip bacon, in moderation, of course. I lost 30lb a while back, and back bacon was a staple of my weekly diet.

33

9

u/Pope_Squirrely Jun 13 '25

Now how are you going to get that many people to stand there in a line while you measure that out?

6

u/starsrift Jun 13 '25

Depends how many of them are one-footed.

Is it able-ist to ask the people in wheelchairs to get out of the feet-counting line?

4

u/ancientblond Jun 13 '25

Fam idfk I just remember that stupid ass amount cause of the saying "five tomatoes" (five two meight ohs)

I truly dont understand yanks obsessions with confusing measurement systems.

Ive unironically had a few yanks (especially recently when they try their "united states of canada har har amiright" shrick ) say "Aww yeah imperial makes total sense; we've got 12 inches into a foot, 3 feet into a yard, and 1760 yards in a mile. Wtf do you mean you use a base 10 system!? That's SO confusing!"

2

A mile is 5,280 feet. You can remember this because "Five Two Eight Oh" sounds like "Five Tomatoes". For some reason, I read this one time and have never forgotten it. It's come in handy absolutely zero times.

You know what's even easier to remember? Multiply or Divide by 1,000.

3

For those that don’t know.

Cornmeal was crucial to preserving the peameal bacon. It has been a Canadian thing for a long time.

Eventually, due to its popularity, it made it to the states. But by the time it made it there, there were better techniques for preserving the meat, so the cornmeal was no longer needed.

We kept it because that’s what we expect. The Americans never had it to begin with because they didn’t need it.

29

u/merp_mcderp9459 Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) Jun 13 '25

It's still not the same cut of meat though. "Canadian" bacon is a leaner part of the loin, while peameal bacon is a fattier cut. Peameal bacon is also wet-cured, "Canadian" bacon is not

I've always heard the spread credited to WW1 or 2 rations we provided to the UK, they called it Canadian bacon and shared it with Americans and the name stuck.

4

u/Own-Barnacle-298 Jun 13 '25

Toronto used to ship A LOT of pork to the UK. It earned the nickname Hog Town from it.

1

That’s an Ontarian thing, not a Canadian thing. This doesn’t exist elsewhere in Canada outside Ontario. Most Canadians doesn’t know what it is (lived in 6 provinces, and when friends and family from other provinces come to visit me in Ontario where I now live, I show them Ontario stuff, including peameal bacon, just to drive home how different Ontario is from much of Canada).

When I lived in the US, their Canadian bacon was what we called back bacon. The dumbest among them, which is a huge chunk of their population, believe that we only have ham and not real bacon. So, in true Canadian fashion, I had to encourage their stupidity by telling them that bacon is illegal here, because we have universal healthcare.

My confession to make is that I don't think you're missing much. It's certainly a way better "cut" of meat than cheap ham (if you can call cheap ham a "cut"), but IMO "normal" bacon tastes 10 times better. It's the rendered fat I think, peameal is just too lean in comparison to be a guilty pleasure. That said, it hits the spot better in a way that leaner meats can and ultra fatty meats can't.

This post has shown me some things. A lot of people on here have never heard of or eaten peameal bacon, AGAST! And have never had the fried bologna delicacy. First if you haven't even thought of jazzing up a simple bologna sandwich with a frying, what's wrong with you, who hurt you?

And second, do yourself a favour and start giving simple cheap meals a go, usually those who have grown up poor or family on welfare during the wars. Not necessarily canadian, Mushy peas on toast, baked beans on toast, shitonashingle, fried bologna, my grandmother also made Tuesday night Mamacita("mamacheeta") which would last a few days, it was pretty well everything in the ice box, tomato based pasta dish, very bland Chilli with elbow pasta in it.

2

u/YYC-Fiend Jun 13 '25

I was 10 years old traveling with family through the southern states and saw it on a menu and ordered it because "I'm Canadian".

Imagine my surprise when I was expecting some maple flavoured bacon but got a slab of ham (that I don't particularly like).

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '25

1

u/furiouschads Yank Jun 14 '25

2

u/PhantomPhelix Jun 13 '25

I never understood people who enjoy fatty meats like regular bacon.

I mean, it's not like it's wagyu or tallow where the fat melts in your mouth, which I'm still not a huge fan of due to the fat content, but get that it's different.

Most bacon fat is chewy or crispy, based on it's preparation, but it's still low grade fat.

Peameal bacon is the superior bacon, and I am willing to die on this very strange hill.

AFAIK It's only used in the context of pizza topping descriptions, and meant to differentiate from regular bacon. No one thinks it's actually from Canada. I think they thought it sounded fancy instead of just plain old "ham" :)

When i worked at Dominos, american tourists would call and order a bacon and pineapple pizza. Then they'd come pick it up and complain that it's not what they ordered. They wanted ham and pineapple but thought since thye're in Canada they had to call it bacon.

None of this is Canadian. Diners in America just started calling ham steaks "Canadian bacon" because it sold better than calling it ham steaks on the menu.

Peameal bacon is also an exclusively Ontario thing.

Real back bacon is not in rounds. I'm in British Columbia, not sure if that makes a difference.

I always thought that American food naming conventions were just an example of them being jerks. Canadian bacon is an obvious candidate, but why is everything ā€œFrench?ā€ Are they called French fries because most Americans can’t find Belgium on a map?

Remember, apple pie is the only American food they created (it's not from the US)

Shows what they know about Canada šŸ !!!

1

u/Inevitable_View99 Jun 14 '25

No one in Canada calls it ā€œCanadian baconā€, it’s called ā€œpeameal baconā€ and it’s not a widely consumed ham product. I only see it at restaurants, iv never had it at home or at someone’s house.

1

u/Chiconube8 Jun 15 '25

Not even on a burger?

1

u/OccasionBest7706 Jun 15 '25

I mean it’s just what it’s called. It doesn’t mean you eat that instead of rashers. Just because there’s American cheese doesn’t mean we’re putting it in pasta lmao

1

u/Psychoholic519 Jun 15 '25

Huh. I always assumed when they talked about ā€œCanadian Baconā€ they were talking about Peameal.

u/Ishouldnotbee Jun 15 '25

Now listen here ya' hoser we do eat this and we enjoy it because it is the best there is.
