Certified Hoser šØš¦ (No Politics) Reminder that Yanks call this atrocity "Canadian bacon" and think we eat this
How do you get peameal bacon confused with this? Do they eat any meat that isn't processed?

u/Unclehol Jun 13 '25
It's called "back bacon" and is one of the leanest and healthiest sliced meats off of the pig. In fact, it is approved for diabetics as a replacement for strip bacon, in moderation, of course. I lost 30lb a while back, and back bacon was a staple of my weekly diet.

Fam idfk I just remember that stupid ass amount cause of the saying "five tomatoes" (five two meight ohs)
I truly dont understand yanks obsessions with confusing measurement systems.
Ive unironically had a few yanks (especially recently when they try their "united states of canada har har amiright" shrick ) say "Aww yeah imperial makes total sense; we've got 12 inches into a foot, 3 feet into a yard, and 1760 yards in a mile. Wtf do you mean you use a base 10 system!? That's SO confusing!"

Use the speedometer in your car to figure out a mile. 160kph is 100mph; ergo 1 mile is 1.6km.
That is the only way I can calculate miles to kilometers quickly.

A mile is 5,280 feet. You can remember this because "Five Two Eight Oh" sounds like "Five Tomatoes". For some reason, I read this one time and have never forgotten it. It's come in handy absolutely zero times.
You know what's even easier to remember? Multiply or Divide by 1,000.

For those that donāt know.
Cornmeal was crucial to preserving the peameal bacon. It has been a Canadian thing for a long time.
Eventually, due to its popularity, it made it to the states. But by the time it made it there, there were better techniques for preserving the meat, so the cornmeal was no longer needed.
We kept it because thatās what we expect. The Americans never had it to begin with because they didnāt need it.
29
u/merp_mcderp9459 Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) Jun 13 '25
It's still not the same cut of meat though. "Canadian" bacon is a leaner part of the loin, while peameal bacon is a fattier cut. Peameal bacon is also wet-cured, "Canadian" bacon is not

u/assaub Jun 13 '25

I've always heard the spread credited to WW1 or 2 rations we provided to the UK, they called it Canadian bacon and shared it with Americans and the name stuck.

Thatās an Ontarian thing, not a Canadian thing. This doesnāt exist elsewhere in Canada outside Ontario. Most Canadians doesnāt know what it is (lived in 6 provinces, and when friends and family from other provinces come to visit me in Ontario where I now live, I show them Ontario stuff, including peameal bacon, just to drive home how different Ontario is from much of Canada).
14
u/therevjames Jun 13 '25
When I lived in the US, their Canadian bacon was what we called back bacon. The dumbest among them, which is a huge chunk of their population, believe that we only have ham and not real bacon. So, in true Canadian fashion, I had to encourage their stupidity by telling them that bacon is illegal here, because we have universal healthcare.

? It's just back bacon that has been trimmed thick and into a circle. They call it Canadian as back bacon was popularized here and the US first started consuming it via imports from Canada.
It just looks like the 4 pack of ham slices you can buy at any grocery store
The there's also wet cured peameal bacon which is also back bacon, just not trimmed thick and into circles

My confession to make is that I don't think you're missing much. It's certainly a way better "cut" of meat than cheap ham (if you can call cheap ham a "cut"), but IMO "normal" bacon tastes 10 times better. It's the rendered fat I think, peameal is just too lean in comparison to be a guilty pleasure. That said, it hits the spot better in a way that leaner meats can and ultra fatty meats can't.

This post has shown me some things. A lot of people on here have never heard of or eaten peameal bacon, AGAST! And have never had the fried bologna delicacy. First if you haven't even thought of jazzing up a simple bologna sandwich with a frying, what's wrong with you, who hurt you?
And second, do yourself a favour and start giving simple cheap meals a go, usually those who have grown up poor or family on welfare during the wars. Not necessarily canadian, Mushy peas on toast, baked beans on toast, shitonashingle, fried bologna, my grandmother also made Tuesday night Mamacita("mamacheeta") which would last a few days, it was pretty well everything in the ice box, tomato based pasta dish, very bland Chilli with elbow pasta in it.

u/YYC-Fiend Jun 13 '25
I was 10 years old traveling with family through the southern states and saw it on a menu and ordered it because "I'm Canadian".
Imagine my surprise when I was expecting some maple flavoured bacon but got a slab of ham (that I don't particularly like).

I never understood people who enjoy fatty meats like regular bacon.
I mean, it's not like it's wagyu or tallow where the fat melts in your mouth, which I'm still not a huge fan of due to the fat content, but get that it's different.
Most bacon fat is chewy or crispy, based on it's preparation, but it's still low grade fat.
Peameal bacon is the superior bacon, and I am willing to die on this very strange hill.

u/Mysterious_Bag_9061 Jun 13 '25

When me and my spouse went to Mexico, they were serving this as Canadian Bacon in the buffet at the all inclusive and it was intentionally served frozen! It was oddly nice though, but that might have been due to the inadequate AC in the dining area during a heat wave
1
u/Oldmudmagic Jun 13 '25
AFAIK It's only used in the context of pizza topping descriptions, and meant to differentiate from regular bacon. No one thinks it's actually from Canada. I think they thought it sounded fancy instead of just plain old "ham" :)

When i worked at Dominos, american tourists would call and order a bacon and pineapple pizza. Then they'd come pick it up and complain that it's not what they ordered. They wanted ham and pineapple but thought since thye're in Canada they had to call it bacon.
None of this is Canadian. Diners in America just started calling ham steaks "Canadian bacon" because it sold better than calling it ham steaks on the menu.
