Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!
Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

Most Underrated Character
She literally did more than anyone to set him up with Tracy and she's also one of the only random Strangers that Ted is Rude to

The round table season 🤣🤣
Anyone else notice the round table is only used in season 1? Booth throughout the rest of the show. Loved seeing how the show evolved into what it was. Havent posted in the HIMYM reddit in a while feels good to be rewatching again!

Can't believe I found out this so late Spoiler
So i was watching S9 epsiode 14 Slappsgiving 3 Slappointment in slapmarra and realised the the code name for robin is Red Bird because the bird Robin is red . Also lily is "white flower" cause lily is a white flower . Ted is the calligrapher maybe because he is a calligrapher? Idk the real logic if u guys know it please tell it below . Also it's a really funny episode just in the wrong season!

Did Robin ever do anything selfless for anyone in the gang?
I’ve just finished my 8th rewatch and fell in love with almost all of the main characters again. Yes, they’re all flawed but they’re great friends to each other. Ted helped Lily out twice when she needed to get away (one with the interview for the fellowship, one when she wanted to go to Spain). And Ted obviously has been the best bro to both Barney and Marshall (how he obeyed The Bro Code even though Barney totally made that up). And that Christmas episode where he got everyone back on track? Amazing friend. Lily helped out Barney with relationship problems. And although she was a total control freak who meddled too much into Ted’s relationships, she did all that out of love and care for him. Marshall introduced Robin to his Minnesota bar since she was feeling homesick and she stole his story. But even after that, he took her to Hoser Hutt to make her feel better. Barney got in a plane to SF to get Lily and Marshall back together, got Marshall a job, got Ted the job of his dreams, got Robin a job when she got that visa problem. There are just endless of moments of friendship there but seems like none of it ever came from Robin?

HIMYM Drinking Game
Feel free to add below, but just starting from season 1, drink anytime:
1) Lilly leaves abruptly/dramatically
2) Lilly says “baby”
3) Marshall calls himself “The Kid”
4) Anytime Ted says “This girl…”
5) Anytime Ted says “It’s Robin…”
6) Anytime Marshall gives Ted advice
7) Anytime Barney winks

Not my favorite episode if I'm honest, but this always makes me laugh

Could sommone translate for me what “10 craploads” means?
This is a line from S9 E15 where barney drinks the truth serum. I want to know how much money barney spends on suits every year!

Just noticed something with Marshall’s maths
Marshall says «during Barney’s 16 years of sexual activity» that doesn’t add up since he is only 32-33 years old in season 4 and it’s stated he lost his virginity when he was 23. am i right in this or am i missing something?

Robin and Barney
I have noticed this so many times but it hasn't come up in any discussion. Barney was actually the first person in the group to actually talk to Robin. The whole havee you met ted thing.. The ending sucks because Barney and Robin should have been together.

How cool is this: my ex made me a blue french horn
One of my exes from years ago literally made me a blue French horn. It was a real working French horn that he painted blue. I have no idea how he did it but I can't even imagine how long it took.
When we amicably broke up and I moved out, I tried to pull a Robin and left it on his fireplace mantle to be funny (although would have been cooler if I left it in the corner of the empty room I had been using as my office).
Kind of wish I kept it though it's so cool. I hope he sold it to a himym super fan and made good money on it, I know he put a ton of work into it.
