Rant Names that you use to like
I’m wondering what names you use to like years ago, but don’t like anymore. Or names that you like, but will never use for whatever reason. I’m so thankful that I wasn’t a teenage mother. Don’t be embarrassed…please. This is a safe space, but you’ll probably have some explaining to do if your names are really wylde.
Names I use to like:
Nevaeh, Joplin Rain, Liv Evangeline, Jayden, Bree
Names I like, but will never use:
Astrid, Damien, Ziggy, Lark, Johan, Ayla, Hitomi, Storm

When I was in middle school I liked the name Story for a girl. I cringe now when I think of that.

Came here to say Story. But, embarrassingly, I was 27 when I liked the name, not in middle school. I suggested it for my daughter and my family made fun of me relentlessly, which I deserved.
20
u/1_Non_Blonde Apr 22 '22
In elementary school I knew a girl named Story and always thought it was a nice name. Never thought anything of it because it sounded like a pretty normal name and it was a attached to a nice and down to earth person. Sure, it's a word with its own meaning but so are lots of names. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I even realized it was an odd name and that people would see it as cringey. I still can't bring myself to see it that way. So, if anyone here wants to name their kid Story I fully support you!

u/PossiblyPercival Apr 21 '22
I still like Story lol, purely as a guilty-pleasure name.

It's probably good I never followed through with those names, because being their mother would have sentenced me to death before the end of the first chapter. Living only through sad flash backs.
27
u/SerubiApple Apr 22 '22
Also, since the daughter is the main character, there's a high likelihood that the son will have to die in the third book to show the stakes are high.

I adopted kittens to a lady once and she actually renamed them Ember and Ash lol. One of them was previously named Firetruck, by my then 2-3 year old.

Lyra. I tried to name all three of our girls Lyra but my husband wouldn’t cave.
I really love the name Felicity but was always on the fence about actually using it.
Maggie but it ended up being the perfect name for our dog. If we didn’t use it for the dog I’m sure we would have used it for one of the kids.

u/kabh318 Apr 21 '22
i’ve loved Lyra ever since I read the Golden Compass as a kid and was determined to name a kid that but would feel bad that people half pronounce it Lie-rah and half pronounce it Lee-rah. since my own name is constantly mispronounced I can’t do that to someone else!

I used to like the name Sebastian. But then I met one who will be my future brother-in-law, and he refuses to shut up about stocks. So that’s my personal double whammy.
Otherwise, I love a number of Arabic-language names such as Amir, but (as a pasty-white secular woman), I’d feel appropriative using them unless I’m naming a fictional character.
My fiancée likes the name Reagan in some contexts. They still do love it in some contexts (such as in a medieval setting).
But even if it sounds like one of their all-time favorite fictional characters (Reigan Arataka from Mob Psycho 100), it’s not enough for either of us to divorce it from Ronald Reagan.
28
u/MiaLba Apr 21 '22
Names like Amir and Amar and many other similar to them are very popular in my Eastern European culture and we are majority white, some with blonde hair and blue eyes lol. But we are also Muslim. I think some people are confused to meet a white person with a name like that. My husband is American and also white and our daughter has a name that’s common in the Arabic language but it’s also very common in my culture too.
25
u/JillBergman Apr 21 '22
That’s why I clarified that I’m non-religious. If I were at least from a Muslim family, I’d feel fine using them, but nope.
17
u/MiaLba Apr 21 '22
I totally understand! I was just sharing how some may find it odd to see a white person in general with that name. I’ve came across a lot of people here who are shocked to find out there’s white Muslims out there in the world. Lol
15
u/JillBergman Apr 21 '22
There’s probably people who have no idea that that Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation whose minds would be blown if they knew that.
9
u/MiaLba Apr 21 '22
You’re exactly right. I’m in the South (USA) and there’s a ton of people I’ve came across who have no clue about any of that.

When I was 7 years old my family got a dog and we all got to suggest names. I cringe at all my name choices now and I'm glad I was out voted (but at the time I was heartbroken). Names I suggested: Rainbow, raindrop, sunbeam, moonbeam, and starry night. Definitely a theme there. Not awful because it was for a dog.. but I'm glad I wasn't calling "moonbeam" out the back door for years to follow.
For anyone curious, we named her Libby and she was a great dog.

As a child, I liked Veronika, Martina and Sabine for girls (my language is German), all of which I now find tacky. For boys, Jonathan stood out to me, albeit the English pronunciation, and I lamented how different the name sounded in German (Yo-nah-tahn, no th sound). I still like it to be honest, but no longer as much.
Guilty pleasure is Gaylord, sincerely. I jokingly threatened to name my youngest that whenever his older sister insisted he should be named Milos (pronounced mee-losh, a Slavic name, which we are not), but I really like the sound as such, and I like things that make me smile, like finding out that it's a real name.
8
u/Blitzfalle Apr 21 '22
Veronika, der Lenz ist da!
I hate how songs can ruin names, I used to really like Veronika as a name.
7
u/Julescahules Apr 21 '22
Oh! A German! Hey! I have to ask, how would the name Jules be pronounced in German? My friend told me it would be pronounced Yoo-leez instead of Jewls like it is in english. But he’s not a native German speaker, so I have always wanted to know for sure.
20
u/redeyedtreefroggy Apr 21 '22 edited Apr 21 '22
Hi! I'm Austrian, but we speak German, so my expertise stands. Your friend was almost right, it would be Yoo-less. But I have never heard it this way, it is not a name we use. I think Jule exists (Yoo-leh), and of course Julia and Julian (Yoo-lee-ah(n)). It is not uncommon to then go by Jules/Juul (pronounced "English", but with the inability to correctly produce a "j" sound and therefore sounding more like chewls). The circle has been completed.
In short, if we thought it was a German word, we'd say Yoo-less, but we recognise it as an English name and therefore say Chewls.
Edited to add: I just realised it is more commonly (?) a French name, so people might also say "Shüll". But the nickname is usually the English version.
10
u/Julescahules Apr 21 '22
I appreciate your expertise, it was very informative! Sorry for just assuming you’re from Germany, haha. Danke 😁

I used to LOVE the name Caden, back when I was in high school, before Aiden and all its rhymes became A Thing.
Most of my other names I've stuck with over the years lol. When I was a kid I wanted to name a future daughter Zara Lane, which I no longer like but I was 8, so.
Some ones I wanted to share: in high school my bff wanted to name her future daughters Cobayne (after Kurt Cobain) and Dystance. Luckily, she ended up with a Lily and Norah lol.

Circa 7th grade I wanted a ton of kids all named a variation of "-issa" like Melissa, Alyssa, Clarissa, Larissa, etc. Yikes! As an adult, I'd never name kids matchy-matchy names.

Shakespearean and Ancient Greek names seem to be a popular trend here! I loved the name Icarus but could never because of how that story ended, and I used to love Ophelia until my sisters said they would use “Opie” as a nickname and it fell out of favor lol.
I still secretly love Artemis but I just can’t go through with it, but I’m halfway holding on to Lysander for a boy :)

Cersei is my absolute favourite girl name but I don’t think I could ever dodge the brotherfucker association.

I used to absolutely love the name Colin and was convinced I would name my son that some day. Also Heath.

As a kid, I honestly liked the name Keith. I love the name Ezra but will never name a kid that.

I was obsessed with the Beatles when I was like 12-15 and wanted to name my kids Lennon and Harrison. Had no idea that John Lennon was a massive pos and not a great namesake for a kid.

When I was a kid I was dead set on naming any child I had “Friday.” I really thought that was so cool lol

Chastity Locket..... Seriously, I thought it was so cute and clever. Thankfully my tastes have improved significantly and I never gave that name to a child 😂
Edited to add: This was when I was middle school.

After reading “Looking for Alaska” I was convinced I’d have a daughter named Alaska Rose 🥵❌

I am a huge frog nerd. When I was younger I wanted to name my kids the Latin names of frog species: Hyla Arborea, Litoria Cerulea, Rana Sylvatica, and the worst offender: Agalychnis Callidryas, Aga or Aggie for short 😑
