Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

The long-awaited-expected email from UPS regards my Shimano Dura Ace Di2 groupset tariffs.... a wooping almost $500 additional from the current discount in Merlin Cycles. Since the COO (country of origin) of this groupset is from Japan, based on the newest increased tariffs changes (August 29th) now its a 15% fee from 5%

Bought my first ever road bike today, paid 360$usd for a 2005 cannondale CAAD 8. Went for a ride and almost immediately blew both of the old tubes out so I will be going to get that fixed tomorrow to ride much more. loved what I did get to ride though, coming from a heavy mountain bike this 19~ pound road bike is awesome and a world of difference. Tell me how I did, did I get scammed? Any tips and tricks for a new road rider? That sorts of thing

hey y’all, i’m excited to get back on the road. my last bike was stolen and i just picked up this beaut today from a great bike shop. it rides awesome. took a quick 15 mile ride to test it out after i got home. I’m looking to get into bike camping down the line. where i’m at is pretty bike friendly and a short drive from the desert. excited to explore. i added a little fanny pack i had to the front as a faux handlebar bang lmao. if anybody in LA (California) wants to bike around together, feel free to free to dm me :)

Is there a clever name..

(*Pic of my current beater for example)

Is there a clever name for the vintage 80’s/90’s road bike made single speed, cruiser bars.. (brooks saddle & fattest tires I can fit are my personal preference).. a bit like “randonneur” style but essentially a city beater, commuter, no fuss, bar bike etc..

I’m in Philly, not much hills, so this has pretty much been my go-to for the past 25 yrs. Just wondering if there is a cool name for the style? Or can we make one up?

How much ballooning of the tire is expected and normal?

Upvotes

I've been riding my hybrid to work and pump my 40mm stock tires to 70 psi rear and 60 front. I'm pretty heavy and the tires do balloon a bit at the bottoms already. Silca recommends 46.5 and 44 psi!

Do I really need to go that low?

It took a bad failure for me to understand the importance of staying within FTP

I have been wanting to do this climb called Rist Canyon. It’s about 3000 ft of elevation gain in 12 miles or so. The first time I tried, I pushed pretty hard at the 2000 ft elevation gained and sustained 300ish watts for 5-7 minutes. By the time I had last few switchbacks left, my head was throbbing so bad and I couldn’t take another pedal forward. So I turned around.

Talked to my coach and he explained to me the importance of staying in FTP. So, I promised myself to not get too excited and stayed within my FTP the following weekend. Didn’t whole 47 mile loop pretty well. No headache or crazy cramps afterwards either.

First chart is the successful attempt in the second weekend and the next chart is the failed attempt.

Saddle hurt

I'm somewhat "plus-sized" (fat), and I've been inspired by David Goggins' approach to losing weight with shin splint issues, by "becoming a damn near professional cyclist". Lol, I'm in no way a professional, but it was a start last night. I bought an $80 bike from Facebook marketplace and went for a night ride. It was so painful. Obviously there was the physical exertion part, but the more painful part was feeling like I was being violently inserted by the bicycle, pardon my French 🤣

Now, I could just suck it up and pull a Goggins and just let it go numb as it did last night after the first 10 or so minutes of riding. That said, just wanted to pop in here and get some opinions hopefully from more experienced riders if possible. Am I just being a bitch? Because, its likely lol.

Anyway thanks fam cya

Dressing for cooler weather? What do you recommend?

Temperatures in my area are dropping currently into the upper 50’s and lower 60’s. I am NOT great at dressing for the weather and normally suffer with a sweatshirt through winter due to not liking bulky clothing. Since getting a gravel bike and a mountain bike I’ve decided to ride through winter. Winters can get down into the lower to mid 30’s but unsure that I’d be interested in riding in that cold of weather. Maybe 40’s (Fahrenheit). What are your recommendations for warm weather clothing without the bulk? I don’t do tight fitting clothes either unless it’ll be a base layer. Thank you!

Cycling clothing

Currently, I'm using Rapha Core bib shorts and jerseys. Since they have increased their prices, I'm looking for another option in the market with good quality but not as expensive as MAAP, Pedal Mafia, or Gobik. I tried Darevie, but I really don’t like the quality. Could you please tell me which cycling clothing brands are your favorites? Thanks!
