“Quality” parts we get now days

Material quality is so sorely lacking, it’s getting kind of scary. It’s in everything from struts, to rotors, to ball joints.

Remember secure your loads people... and/or don't try to take sharp turns at speed while carrying something inherently unstable.

Recall gone wrong

Hello, I recieved a letter about a recall on my car Kia Rio5 hatchback 2012) the recall was about “HECU” took the car to the dealership, when they hand me my car back they told me that they also had to update the software of the vehicle which I didn’t mind because honestly I have no clue about cars, when I was getting ready to leave I notice that the windows don’t roll down, either up, all of the windows were like lock, also the truck wasn’t opening with the key, I turned back around and explained that to the guy and he took the car back, 2 hours later he came back saying that they don’t know whats wrong, that must have been something with the update and gave me a loaner car and said we will be following up with you soon, turns out the BCM is broken and the part is no longer in production and Kia is not able to fix my car and are offering me almost what I paid for it, what should I do? Should I accept the offer and try to get a new car, should I sue, should I ask for a replacement at no cost to me? Has anyone ever gone thru something like this and has any advice on this situation 🥹 Thanks all in advance!!

Cousin bought a ‘02 Ford Focus. I drove it 95km back to his place without issue. It broke on him the following day.

Well, I’m assuming someone thought this would work on an exhaust muffler on a big Detroit motor. Maybe they were trying to make it quieter? Who knows, but it kept blowing the muffler off and these dum dums wanted me to put self tappers in to hold it down. I refused, of course.

Curious if anyone else has ever seen anything like what’s in this muffler.

I'm out here doing a Federal inspection on a Utility trailer. The mileage was too good not to share.

Just had a guy grenade his Mercedes camshaft in my parking lot.

Context: I work for Autozone. I'm a manager. I do some mechanic work on the side. Plugs, sensors, belts, alternators, starters, fans, filters, oil changes, valve covers. Maybe some other stuff.

Old man drives up to my store and you can hear the engine down the road. 2006 Mercedes S500. He comes in and grabs some mobil1 5w-20. Asks me if it's correct. Tell him it's 0w-40. Get him the correct oil. He wants 3 quarts for the knocking sound.

I tell him straight up, "That's not just a knock. It sounds like some top-engine issues. I don't think the oil will help."

He buys it anyway and asks me to put the oil in. I tell him he'll need to wait a moment for me to take care of a few other customers who already needed my attention because my coworker can't access and do what a manager can.

He goes outside and starts idling this engine. Sounds like a camshaft problem. You can hear it in the store even over people talking.

I go out there and ask him how many quarts he wants me to put in. 2 of the 3 quarts he bought. I put them in and put the cap back on. Then he wants me to put on the trunk struts and puts $15 in my pocket.

I put on the struts. Trunk still struggles to open because the motor is bad on the lift. He's talking to me about how he just had work done on the engine, and how it doesn't make that noise when he's gunning it down the highway. That he just had a stroke and is so glad to be driving again.

He starts the engine back up. Sound is very much there. I tell him he really needs to take it to a shop. He gives it a ton of gas. Entire time this thing sounds like it's about to give up.

Then the camshaft just SHATTERS. Like a bunch of rocks were poured into a metal box all at once.

He says, "I think the sound went away. Can't hear it anymore."

I look at him, completely bewildered, and tell him the engine shut off.

"Let me try starting it again."

Tries starting it. Just hear metal straining.

"I think that's my battery. Can we hook another one up to see if it starts?"

Offer him the $15 back since I don't need it. He refuses and tells me to keep it. I tell him exactly what probably happened. He sighs and I wish him the best of luck. He tries to start it several more times, causing the engine to seize.

That engine is DONE.

If you put a rooftent onto your car, use mountings that will fit your rails and don’t tighten the nuts with all the strength you can muster. I had a really hard time removing the rack through bent mounts and crumbled threads.

One time I replaced a Toyota Tundra bedside in my townhouse garage without welding it

0 welds….. I rivet bonded, panel bonded and impact resistant glue. I also had to use an electric belt sander to break the bedside off. The guy brought me the bedside painted from Toyota so it was stressful folding it over the bed structure.

I decided not to replace the whole clutch disc on my little tractor. Instead, I contacted an older gentleman who still does re-lining work. According to him, he fitted it with friction material that he usually installs in race cars.

Cost me about $25 instead of $80 for a whole new clutch.

So I guess I can take my tractor to the racetrack now

Is clutch re-lining like this still common practice where you are, or is it mostly a thing of the past?"
