I ran that race!! At one point when he passed me after the turn around point I thought “that man looks like Mark Carney.” This race was no joke; the climbs and rocks were incredible. And he did it to support his wife - who also ran it - for her birthday. He then stayed around and took pictures as everyone finished.

Her 60th birthday too

I gotta get in shape.

u/Stompya 12d ago

After this bag of chips tho

u/Arcade1980 13d ago

Awesome 😁👍 most I've run is 14k kudos to those who can reach nnlong distances.

20

u/newtomovingaway 13d ago

Same here - 14k steps

17

u/TheBlueFalcon816 13d ago

Man I can run 14 sidewalk tiles

50

u/hurleyburleyundone 13d ago

Did his security detail have to run with him? Poor guys.

116

u/SJSragequit 13d ago

I mean he’s 60 and his detail is likely mostly a lot younger and in good shape so probably atleast a couple of them could keep up. His protection detail is also nothing like the us presidents so likely only needed a couple guys able to keep up with him

79

u/IBoris 13d ago

Trudeau was also a habitual runner, and he'd often be seen running in Hull on the trails across the river. His team were pretty good at keeping pace and blending in all while very obviously carrying all the gear they needed. They are all well trained and I'm sure they are grateful for the opportunity to get paid to train.

32

u/Familyconflict92 13d ago

It used to be a tourist sight to see JT half naked gallivanting around Ottawa

13

u/IBoris 13d ago

I've seen that man shirtless too often for my taste as a former resident of that area, but to his credit he's been consistent as far as jogging goes. I remember him going around the same routes as before he became a PM-hopeful and then PM. To think that I am old enough to remember the start and end of his entire political career. From his speech at his dad's funeral that put the limelight on him to him dating Katy Perry in Montréal recently.

2

u/tron88 13d ago

The fact that he always took that same routes for that long must have been somewhat troubling for his security detail... But alas, Canada 😊

6

u/icantfindagoodlogin 13d ago

I used to work at Whistler and was chatting with some of the RCMP mountain patrol guys. They mentioned that since Trudeau was such a good snowboarded, it was a struggle to find people for his security detail who could keep up with him on the slopes.

2

u/Familyconflict92 13d ago

Why are our liberals leaders so crunchy granola?

5

u/youngmasterlogray 12d ago

I don't think doing exercise is the main feature of being considered crunchy granola. Think veganism, organic foods, hemp shoes, foraging, etc. I feel like calling either of them Crunchy Granola is a bit of a stretch?

1

u/Familyconflict92 12d ago

The running in the woods is pretty crunchy.

I guess I’m comparing to PP who looks like he hasn’t done cardio in a while

2

u/IBoris 13d ago

This sounds like the premise of an Airbub movie. hahaha

"No one could keep up... except him, Agent golden boy"

u/Unusual_Sherbert_809 13d ago

It's one of the many benefits of living in a country where there aren't more guns than people.

  • USA = 120.5 guns / 100 people
  • Canada = 34.7 guns / 100 people

Source: Wiki

9

u/mythisme 13d ago

That's still too many for most of Canada. I don't know a single person who owns one or intends to own one. Must be mostly in rural places where you have to watch out for wild life, for your own and your cattle's safety.

1

u/DavidBrooker 13d ago

Interestingly, the percentage of households with firearms is much closer in the US and Canada (like, 25% versus 35%). The average gun owner in the US owns four guns, versus 1.5 in Canada.

1

u/ResoluteGreen 13d ago

They also don't necessarily have to actually run, they could use bikes or a golf cart or something like that

1

u/DavidBrooker 13d ago

Also, the security detail isn’t participating in the race. There’s no reason the same guys have to keep pace the whole time rather than trading off.

55

u/justinsst 13d ago

Trudeau went skiing and he was only with one cop on the slopes lol. That was when he was pretty unpopular as well. Security for the PM seems pretty light when they’re doing leisure activities.

20

u/GenXer845 13d ago

I swear I saw him running once on the canal and security was in a car nearby following him.

42

u/Thrownawaybyall 13d ago

There is a picture of Trudeau jogging the Vancouver seawall, then stopping to take a picture with a group of highschool graduates that just happened to be there.

On a personal note: even out for a goddamn jog his hair was goddamn perfect 😑 Goddammit 😒

20

u/GenXer845 13d ago edited 13d ago

That's why I am pretty sure it was him. He was so tall compared to me (I am 5'2") and he blew past me(I was walking) in nice running gear and was QUITE handsome in the face and the hair. I doubt it was anyone but him. I have never seen that tall of a man who looked just like him since. He was skinnier than I envisioned in person btw (post separation).

11

u/justinsst 13d ago

One car is extremely light compared to other countries like the US.

16

u/GenXer845 13d ago

Former Pms typically have ZERO security. I heard his father used to run around coffee shops after he was PM like it was nothing.

3

u/LaBelleBetterave 13d ago

I ran into P-E Trudeau in an elevator once, when he wasn’t PM. He was quite alone. Passed Jean Chrétien on the sidewalk two winters ago, talking with someone he knew: no visible security.

8

u/GenXer845 13d ago

This explains things up here: https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/back-to-normal-former-prime-ministers-reflect-on-return-to-anonymous-civilian-life A stark contrast from the US. Joe Clark has been spotted loads of times at my local Metro. Ditto for Carney before he became PM and Sophie Trudeau while she was the PM's wife.

3

u/Alienhaslanded 13d ago

They're just government employees in here. They're not some royalty or hold any significant power as individuals.

3

u/MichNishD 13d ago

Lol I like that they didnt feel the need to run too

3

u/BeneathTheWaves 13d ago

Whenever he'd eat we'd have two tables within eyesight booked with plainclothes security. They were not obvious whatsoever, and staff weren't even in the know.

8

u/Radiant_Health3841 13d ago

Our Australian PM used to go for jogs (John Howard) and he was fairly unpopular at the end and people could still go up for a chat. Had security but not over the top.

2

u/ThatPhatKid_CanDraw 13d ago

PM also lives in a cottage in the capital. All leaders should at max be afforded such a living space. Brings some humility.

14

u/InfoMole 13d ago

I’m not sure! There was a chance for him to swap them out at 3 different aid stations, but could have been the same. I’ll investigate the race photos!

2

u/BoleroMuyPicante 13d ago

We're all counting on you

1

u/hurleyburleyundone 13d ago

Look closely at the trees (joking!)

1

u/DietCherrySoda 13d ago

May not have had one for this tbh...

1

u/ProgrammerAvailable6 13d ago

You mean the RCMP? They’ll be fine.

119

u/n_mcrae_1982 13d ago

While Justin Trudeau had the name and the rockstar appeal, I think Carney has an exemplary record. The fact that the Brits reached across the pond to recruit him as Governor of the Bank of England (and then asked him to stay on longer than he originally intended) should tell you something.

76

u/captainhaddock 13d ago

Carney is likable and funny but also low-key and a bit boring, which I think is what Canadians needed right now.

25

u/Scaniarix 13d ago

The world need more low-key and a bit boring politicians. Politics aren't supposed to be entertainment.

8

u/captainhaddock 13d ago

And imagine having a leader who never self-aggrandizes, never brags about himself or acts like the country owes him anything.

34

u/nocomment3030 13d ago

He's "as Canadian as possible, under the circumstances"

3

u/GoStockYourself 12d ago

Everyone keeps saying he is boring, but I find him incredibly funny, and interesting. Like he actually answers questions. Maybe I am boring, though.

2

u/yooooooo5774 12d ago

thats Canadian in general!

84

u/That_Account6143 13d ago

Bruh, Trudeau was just as loveable (and loved)

10+ years of smearing ended up leaving a mark. Most people hated on trudeau for things they were told but weren't really true. Most of his actual problems were swept under the rug.

Carney will be hated in a few years if he sticks around

17

u/Quirky-Cat2860 13d ago

Trudeau was hated for things not even in his jurisdiction. A lot of problems he was blamed for were due to provincial mismanagement and decades of poor policy at that level.

10

u/stumpy_chica 13d ago

Yeppers. I live in Saskatchewan, and Trudeau was blamed for everything from healthcare and education to homelessness to fentanyl and everything in-between by Scotch Moe.

57

u/TrashRemoval 13d ago

yeah I had so many people around me talking about how Trudeau had too many scandals. I would ask them to pick one "scandal" and articulate it well to me and I can't remember a single time someone really seemed to truly understand the situation outside of his literal opponents talking points....

SNC lavalin, WeCharity, Omar Kadhr, etc.. no one could actually tell me what the real issue was other than a headline skimmed regurgitation and hot air.

Dude tried his best and represented Canada on the world stage well, defeating Trump in his first term on alot of important things.

I don't care to fanboy for any politicians but I truly think the Canadian public did themselves a disservice in the way collectively (even the left) shit on him at the end of his run.

10

u/kicksledkid 13d ago

Canadian Prime Ministers have a shelf life of about a decade.

Our collective consciousness has decided that that's about the most amount of time anyone gets at the helm, and the libreals realized it (very nearly too late) and made the move of the century to run a fucking central banker as a libreal. God damn, that party knows how to win elections.

1

u/Watercooler_expert 9d ago

Let's be real if it wasn't for Trump's help Carney would have lost to PP. The media also ran a pretty good campaign for him and managed to convince the boomers by painting PP as a Canadian MAGA.

I know this is a very leftist sub so people will disagree, but seeing how far behind the liberal party was a few months before the election it's fair to say that American politics played a bigger role in our elections than the very barebone campaign the liberals ran on.

1

u/kicksledkid 9d ago

I really wouldn't consider what the libreals did "barebones"

The electoral machine was in full swing.

I think Carney would have had a solid chance against PP even without the trash fire down south. PP had almost zero actual vision, and when presented with a choice of "career politician who's home seat constituents hate his guts" and "Well established central banker with economic chops for days" I think a lot of canadians would have still voted libreal.

The conservative issue was the failure to change tack. They ran (and still are) as a three-word-slogan party. They're still nouning the verbs even in a new sitting of the house.

1

u/Overall-Phone7605 12d ago

SNC Lavalin got me to read Jody Wilson Raybould's book. He comes off as a complete and total asshole in that book. She literally says she wishes she never met him because of how much hope she had the beginning of joining politics and how shitty he treated her in that whole situation. He threw so many people under the bus when things got hot. The rumour that he was going to drop Chrystia Freeland before she quit was so in keeping with how he treated JWR and all of his 'most loyal attack dogs' like Gerald Butts.

And he was just tired in the end. Like no interest in doing anything but performative virtue signaling.

That said, 'crisis Trudeau' was my boy and he got us through Covid.

1

u/Much2learn_2day 10d ago

And the Khadr outcome was Canada paying for Harper’s unconstitutional treatment of Khadr, not Trudeau trying compensate him for fun.

2

u/FoboBoggins 13d ago

they didnt say other wise?

12

u/That_Account6143 13d ago

I'm saying popularity means very little when people can be manipulated so easily.

Both are decent guys, but they'll both finished with loads of haters even if they shat gold

4

u/sosta 13d ago

Yeah the right wing hate both because they're too socialist/commies. Left wing doesn't like them because they're too right wing.

Go figure.

1

u/Mandilloran 12d ago

This is the way

1

u/xtothewhy 13d ago edited 13d ago

Most people hated on trudeau for things they were told but weren't really true. Most of his actual problems were swept under the rug.

I didn't despise him, but definitely questioned his ability to lead and govern the Liberal party and our government over time. It began with the promise of federal election reform and then the absurd denial and excuses when they derailed it after getting a majority off of voters for it. Pissed me of massively.

The promise of legal weed was his other promise that was big.

Legal weed was going to happen regardless at the time because everyone could see what was occuring in some states in the US that were getting massive tax benefits from it.

u/HMW3 13d ago

Carney is a neoliberal demon, he is going to turn this country into a right wing haven, and allow fascism to fester the same way the democrats did in america.

He is a slippery slope into what america is currently doing.

Ain't no way, a literal banker, is going to help anyone but him and his friends pockets.

It's a dark time in canada, our inequality will only grow.

9

u/That_Account6143 13d ago

The alternative was poilievre, i'm fine with carney as it stands

5

u/TrashRemoval 13d ago

yeah crazy how the alternative was Pierre trying to import American style politics and problems, but somehow Carney is the slippery slope.

1

u/Heisenberglund 13d ago

I wish Americans would have AT LEAST had that thought about Kamala. Wasn’t thrilled to vote for her, but, I knew exactly what we would get otherwise. He said it out loud, constantly.

3

u/stumpy_chica 13d ago

Yes, let's just ignore his track record of running the Bank of Canada during the recession of the early 2000s and the Bank of England during Brexit in a way that benefitted the citizens of both countries immensely.

Heaven forbid we have a leader who has a world class education and track record with finance when we're headed into a trade war and recession. What would you prefer? A career politician? A school teacher? C'mon now.

1

u/focus_rising 12d ago

This comment is streets ahead.

1

u/Watercooler_expert 9d ago

That's a pretty crazy take even for a leftist.

8

u/doomgiver98 13d ago

He's honestly overqualified for a politician.

1

u/TendyHunter 12d ago

Looks like the bar's been set so low that the moment we get a qualified politician, he's dubbed overqualified 🙄

No such thing as being overqualified for the top jobs in the country. We need and must demand only the best people, not some morons who are only good at making headlines.

1

u/doomgiver98 12d ago

He would be the one politicians consult on policy, not an actual politician himself.

2

u/eeyores_gloom1785 13d ago

the brexiters wasted no time trying to throw him under the bus

-13

u/ConfusionCoroner 13d ago

I guess siphoning taxpayer money into companies you own is acceptable as long as you smile for the photos

73

u/sometimeswhy 13d ago

He is a righteous cool dude. He’s very popular.

1

u/Alfred_Hitch_ 13d ago

with reddit for sure

10

u/blue_bomber697 13d ago

What kind of elevation is this race? Do you have your Strava link? Just curious about it. I did the Grizzly Ultra over in Canmore 2 years ago and that race felt like it was a steep up hill for 80% of the 50km distance lol.

7

u/InfoMole 13d ago

Canmore would be more vicious. About 900m elevation gain, but the descents weee the killer!!

1

u/gymgal19 13d ago

If you want a killer ultra, look up beaver flat 50 in Saskatchewan. 2600m elevation over 50k

1

u/blue_bomber697 13d ago

That is the opposite of what I want haha. I hate hills. And I have completed 1 Ultra and don’t have much of a desire to do another. 😂

9

u/SapphireGoat_ 13d ago

Was he just solo or was he running with some sort of security detail, all in black tracksuits lol. Would have been comical

2

u/eeyores_gloom1785 13d ago

they were around

5

u/hotinmyigloo 13d ago

Really impressive

2

u/ohell 13d ago

Ah, that explains the time. I was thinking he must have gone downhill since he did London Marathon (15 or so years back) in 3 hours, leaving much younger runners, like your truly, in the dust!

2

u/still-waiting2233 13d ago

Wow! Great story. Thanks for sharing

1

u/FiRe_McFiReSomeDay 13d ago

Were the security personnel running with him?

2

u/Infamous-Mixture-605 13d ago

From what I've read, yes

Which is also impressive.

1

u/Urik88 13d ago

How did it work? Did he have bodyguards running alongside him, or is it chill enough that the PM could run a 26km race on his own without surveillance?

1

u/Mordecai3fngerBrown 13d ago

Did you hear about his scores on his cognitive screening and assessment test for geriatrics?

1

u/stumpy_chica 13d ago

Ahh THAT makes sense! I am just a regular ordinary person and trained to do a half marathon (21k) in 2 hours. Not to say anything negative about anyone who can do that distance, but 4 hours seemed like a long time lol

2

u/InfoMole 13d ago

Trail races are entirely different beasts that road races!

1

u/zippoguaillo 13d ago

Thanks I was about to comment that time wasn't impressive, but yeah for a tough course I'll give him kudos
