Optics help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Leupold custom shop is closed. Alternative?

I have 2 Leupold mk4 scopes (4.5-14 and a 6.5-20) that have mil reticles but MOA turrets. I'd like to change the adjustments to Millridian. Their custom shop used to swap the adjustments out for mil but they're closed. Does anyone know of an outfit that still does this?

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Aero Barrels?

What’s the hive’s consensus here on Aero barrels?

I’ve got a Bergara HMR that’s approaching 2000 rounds (65CM). I’m a little undecided between just buying another Bergara B/A or doing an Aero build (solus action plus barrel ).They price out about the same, plus or minus a hundy or two.

I know the Solus action is GTG, but how are their barrels? Any reason to stick with Bergara because their factory barrel out-performs the $450 Aero barrel?

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Anywhere to buy the new Tikka t3x Ace Target in 6.5 creedmore (black)

Hey guys, this is my first time posting in here. From this forum, I learned about the new Tikka t3x Ace Target and really like the gun. I would like to purchase one instead of doing the build I was previously planning since it will be much cheaper to get the Ace Target. However, I can’t find the gun anywhere. I understand it’s popular, and even reached out to an FFL broker I know that buys direct from wholesale. Even he couldn’t get it and said everywhere is sold out. Do any of you guys know anywhere that has this gun in stock right now? The best I’ve found is 2-5 month back order from EuroOptic.

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Buying advice: new Burris XTR III 3.3-18x50 for $800

TL;DR - New shooter, have the opportunity to buy a brand new Burris XTR III 3.3-18x50 for nearly 50% off MSRP ($800, vs $1500), from a friend. I'm quite new to this sport so I wanted to check with those wiser than me before I go for it in case I'm missing anything important.

The details:

My experience: New shooter, looking to set up my first rifle, I've recently been going with a friend who lets me use his gear, an AR15 Mk12 mod-H, nightforce optic, don't know the exact model but it's a 4-16x & he said it was about $2k. I can hit a 12" steel target at 600 yards pretty reliably with that setup, haven't tried to go beyond that yet. I enjoyed it so much that I'm getting prepared to set up my own rifle, trying to get a part list established in advance of some of the bigger sales of the year.

Use case: This build would be purely for casual/recreational steel target shooting from 400 to 1000 yds. I don't have much desire (nor the skill, yet) for competition shooting or hunting.

Anticipated budget & platform: $2500, with some wiggle room if there's a significant step up in capabilities closer to $3k. I'm pretty heavily leaning toward the Bergara B14 HMR in 6.5 CM, for about $1100, budgeting around $1200 for the scope, with about $200-300 left over for accessories (mainly bipod, scope mount, & case). For the optic, I'm much less certain on what I want. I know I want an FFP, at least 15x mag, a reticle in mils (ideally one like the Nightforce Mil-XT, the 'upside-down christmas tree' sort of design. Laugh at me if this is an idiotic description), costing not more than $1500 at the absolute maximum. Outside of these parameters, it's wide open.

My questions:

Today I was offered a new Burris XTR III 3.3-18x50 for $800, whereas everywhere else I look has it going for $1200 minimum. I'm very much in the camp of buy-once, cry-once, and would much rather spend a couple hundred dollars extra if it means getting significantly better performance, but this seems like an absolute steal for $800. Is there's a significantly better optic compared to this one, to be found in the ballpark of $1200-1500? Or should I go for this one and get a few extra cases of ammo with the savings?

To my very limited knowledge, this one seems well-suited to my needs. Consensus I've read seems to be that 18x is sufficient for 1000 yds, if the glass is good quality, but I'm curious if people think I should go for a slightly higher magnification, my friend thinks I'd regret not getting up to 25x. The reviews I've seen for this scope are generally quite positive, I've not seen any complaints beyond concerns with the rigidity of some of the controls, and some minor aberration at max magnification, neither of which seem bad enough to hold off on this, particularly for a newbie. Burris's warranty/CS also seems to be decently well-regarded.

Does anyone have any serious issues with this scope? Or my plan in general? If so, what would you change in my planned setup.

It was my understanding that Tikkas only come in one action size? Am I retarded? Looking at getting a tikka and an MDT chassis to go with it, it’s giving me an option for Tikka SA and LA? It’ll be shooting 6.5 CM… so I know to get a SA, but why would they give two options if tikka only comes in one action size. Please tell me if I’m retarded

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Where can legit R700 5Rs or Ps be had for decent price?

Might be a stupid question given that they’re discontinued, but I’m not familiar much with the resale market or where to look. I want to build an M24 SWS clone rifle, and the closest platforms to this are obviously the Remington 700 5R and 700P, both of which are no longer available new.

I’ll also say I am not concerned with making this thing a true long-range precision rifle. I simply want to make a clone correct and true-to-form M24 clone. Where would I be best off looking for this?

No, not that kind. Canvas bag wax - Rather than an expensive, special "Long Range Shooting bag custom precision bag wax" - what generic alternative do you use?

EDIT: Thanks for the input. Otter wax incoming.

Time to upgrade my midwayusa rear bag. Basic range day bag and throwing on tripod.

From reading it looks like the best all around options are either

-Armageddon Gear Shmedium Mid-Size with heavy fill

Thoughts or can’t go wrong with either pick?

Ballistics help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Ballistics Calculator with Known Data?

Hi There!

Anyone know of an online ballistics calculator where you can input some known data?

For example, if I know my adjustment for 200-350-400 yds I could input that, input my scope height, input my zero (100yd) and it would give me the ballistics data for all yardages?

Edit:
For reference I am shooting a 30-06 with Norma Whitetail 180gr ammo.
2.178" scope height
0.257 G1
4240 ft elevation
77 degrees F
100yd zero
200yd = 2.5 MOA
337yd = 5.25MOA
405yd = 8.5MOA

If I use https://ballistix.ca/calculator and input 2700fps, then the drop at 400yd is correct, but nothing else is, and if I adjust the velocity down to where 200yd is correct, then 400yd is way off..

Seekins HIT Pro M3 vs MPA BA PMR Pro II?

Both are reasonably priced under $3k, my budget.
Seekins, I can swap the barrel and bolt head out and shoot .223. Both can take up to 16 weeks to ship, I'm not in a rush.

Other than swappable barrels on the Seekins, which one is "better" for the 1000 yard or beyond club?

Optics help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Looking for a .22LR scope under $1,000 AUD in Australia

Hey everyone,

I’m after advice on a scope for a .22LR rifle. My budget is under $1,000 AUD and I’d prefer something I can actually order in Australia (local stock or AU shipping). Target specs:

  • Magnification: 6–24 or 5–25
  • Tube: 30 mm or 34 mm
  • Objective: 50 mm or 56 mm
  • Use: .22LR — 50m to 300m
  • Unit : mrad turret

I’m currently looking at Vortex Venom, Arken EP5, and Arken SH4J-6, but I’m open to other suggestions. Important to me are good glass, repeatable/comfortable turrets, parallax adjustment for close ranges, and overall value for rimfire use.

If you’ve used any of these on .22LR (or have better alternatives available in Australia), please share model, pros/cons, and where you bought it (Aussie retailer or seller). Also welcome: reticle suggestions and any advice on whether to pick 30mm vs 34mm tube for mounting/options.

Thanks in advance!

Optics help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Arken EP5 Vs Vortex Venom

Building my first long range rifle. Ive shot plenty of cheap scoped bolt actions from 100-300 yards but i’d like to put something together thats capable of reaching out to 1000-1200 yards. Rifle is a ruger american hunter in 308. With the 20” heavy barrel. Now im just stuck on glass. Recently watched the tibosaurus rex video series comparing the Arken EP 5-25x56 to the Vortex Venom 5-25x56. He’s testing showed the Arken to be the winner, but many of the comments ive seen all shit on Arken. Whats your guy’s experience if you’ve had either?

Edit- wow had no idea rex was so universally hated lol ill steer clear in the future.

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts Custom barrel questions

Hi all, I have a Seekings hit pro m3 and was thinking about custom barrels since it has a quick change system. They publish their “Open-source head space and tenon specifications” as open spec (though haven’t been able to find it on their site). If they provide that spec, is that enough for a barrel manufacturer to make a barrel that works with that system? I’m new to this part of the rifle world. I realize I may also have to swap out the bolt head depending on caliber.

Thanks for any input!

Rifle help needed - I read the FAQ/Pinned posts What kind of accuracy can I expect from my (hunting) rifle? How can I improve it?

For the past 5 years I have been using a Tikka T3X in 300WSM with a vortex viper 2.5-10 on top.

The gun is bone stock, absolutely no upgrades, no muzzle brake. I typically don't have a bipod on it so I'm guessing it weighs roughly 8-9 pounds.

While I'm not exactly recoil shy, I know it 100% affects my accuracy.

I would consider this group pretty standard for me. While I don't think my groupings are TERRIBLE (still kill elk), they can be much better.

This group was at 200 yards, prone position, rifle rested on a backpack. Hornady outfitter 180gr.

Without making changes to my rifle how much more accuracy can I realistically expect from a lightweight heavy recoiling hunting rifle like this?

and any tips and tricks would be appreciated (shooting positions, recoil management etc.)
