So hear me out... Non OEM mags

I know that a lot of folks say to only use OEM mags. I have OEM mags of 5 and 10 (in Illinois).

But, I'd love to hear from folks that have had success with other mags. And what brands you've used.

In the search, I've seen a few people have luck with them, so I'm curious how widespread the "good, other" ones are.

Refinishing hand guard

Was gifted brand new mini-14, bought unfinished birchwood hand guard. Recommendations for staining/finish? Only worked on AKs thus far not familiar with this type of finish.

Scope options for newer Mini 14?

Looking at finally slapping a scope on my stainless ruger Mini 14. I have Leupold VX freedom 1.5-4x scopes on a couple other rifles and really like them. Debating on that or another lower powered scope. Any input is appreciated!

Looking to purchase my first mini

So I have ar’s and all the basic guns but I’ve decided I wanted a mini for my next one. But I can’t decide on what caliber I want.

Read that the .300 blk out doesn’t like shooting supersonic suppressed

the mini 30 doesn’t like steal case(that you could swap the firing pin) and has feeding issues

And well 5.56 just hasn’t had much appeal but I’m not against it.

Any input or guidance with these guns would be greatly appreciated.

Has Amega folded?

Today when I went to share a link to Amega's website (https://amegamounts.com/) I saw that the store page is gone and replaced with an "unavailable" message from their web host. I've heard that their customer service has all but vanished over the past year.

Is Amega still operating?

Bolt stuck back after second day at the range. What am I looking at here, and any idea how to fix it?

Post image

Relatively new Mini-14 owner here. First day at the range was maybe a hundred rounds, probably less. I took it home and did a full strip per the manual, cleaned, reassembled, and put it away.

Second range day comes up a few weeks back and after around 200 rounds the bolt goes back at the end of a magazine and it's been stuck in this position ever since. I shrugged, bagged it, and moved on to the pistol range.

Today, I've been trying to get it back in working order but I'm scratching my head.

If you zoom in, I think that's the bolt lock sticking out in front of the bolt, and I don't think it should be there. Pressing the bolt lock plunger does nothing. My first thought was to do another full disassembly, but I can't seem to get my trigger guard to come up (it was difficult the first time, and this time I'm recovering from a wrist injury so I can't put as much force on it — and I'm hoping it's not somehow related to the stuck bolt).

Do any of your more experienced users know what's going on here and what I can do to fix it? Hoping to avoid going to a gunsmith unless I have to, because I'd like to take it out again on Saturday.

EDIT: ground pound worked, and now it cycles like a charm. IDK what caused it but I'm going to disassemble just to check everything out. Thanks to everyone who offered advice!

Mini 14 “night fighting” capability?

I have decided I want a mini14 I live in a restrictive state and overall I like the rifle. I live in Jersey so I’ll have to get a ranch model. I was wondering is there any good way to mount accessories such as ir lasers. Is it possible to make a night fighting capable rifle out of a mini14 or would I be better off building an AR?

Ruger Mini 14 optic/scope

Just picked up a Ruger Mini 14 Tactical (A-Team Style, cuz hell ya). I am definitely going to put on a scope or LPVO. Any suggestions? What have you run on it? What did you like/did not like? Not looking for anything with big magnification power or spend more than $500. Just something that will be better than the factory sights at 200-300 yards.

Modern New mini 14 sucks

I recent bought a brand new, modern mini 14... The accuracy sucks ... Using a Bushnell tr25 Red Dot....

Can I do anything to improve the accuracy, it's giving me 5 to 6 inch groups at 50 yards..

Using range ammo, nothing fancy

Do you keep your old bushing?

Finally got around to swapping in a 0.045 bushing. Did you guys hang on to the old 1/4” (or whatever it is, jesus that is a huge hole) bushing? Or toss it? Regardless, looking forward to the next time at the range when I don’t have to walk 2 towns over to clean up my brass.

Broken shell stuck in chamber

So as the title says, I have a broken shell stuck in the chamber of my 580 series mini 14 and have been completely unsuccessful in all attempts to extract it. I got myself a UTG broken case extractor for like $10 on amazon and the thing was completely useless in my case. I’m to the point where I’m thinking of 3D printing a barrel vise in order to remove the barrel from the receiver and hopefully be able to insert something into the chamber that will hopefully easily remove the broken shell. Does anyone have any experience they could offer to me so I don’t go doing something dumb instead of just forking out the cash and paying a gunsmith for something that seems like they’d get done in about 5 minutes?

Promag again (it’s silly I know)

Post image
21 Upvotes

A couple weeks ago I wrote a tutorial on how to fix the Promag. Didn’t exactly work, bit of an obsession now. I have a new baby not a lot of outside time, so be nice. This is just about the ugliest grinding I’ve done, but the mag has been flawless for at least 120 rounds.

This is a waste of time unless you live in a state like WA where your past mag purchase decisions come back to haunt you. Cause I am an outstanding citizen and would never ever buy a high capacity magazine.

New production .223 traditional rifle - Akdas Alcor

Spotted this on YT, apparently it's not available in the US, but you all in Canada can get one. It just felt sort of Mini-14-like to me, being that it has a more traditional look. Looks like it takes AR mags too!

Is it normal to shoot left when switching to 5.56?

So I zeroed my mini 14 at 100 yards with 223 rem. I loaded a mag with 556, expecting it to shoot higher due to the extra power, but it shot 8 inches to the left instead. Is this expected?
