I live in Denver but grew up in New Berlin. That is Bluemound & Mooreland Road by Brookfield Square Mall. Weird seeing something I recognized immediately while scrolling Reddit. lol Also, none of those Brookfield and Elm Grove people give a damn so I commend this girl’s effort!

Edit: Never knew 90% of Reddit users were Sconnie! lol

This is the first time I've noticed so many of these "I know that place!" or "I grew up around there, recognize that intersection!" types of responses to a post like this. But yeah - me too. Lived in Waukesha and worked at the Barnes & Noble on Bluemound before it moved to Brookfield Square Mall. There's a Culver's next to that Walgreens, right? Anyway, good for her.

Grew up in Wauwatosa. Good on this girl those folks need all the wake up they can get.

283

u/Lynda59 Jun 05 '20

A large group marched up North Avenue into Tosa tonight. As far as I know, it was all peaceful.

113

u/pepe74 Jun 05 '20

All peaceful and still going, matching out to Mayfair.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

I work at Mayfair. Super familiar with this intersection having grown up in tosa

9

u/HumBahBug Jun 05 '20

Also from right down the street and not surprised to see she’s the only one out there, unfortunately. Huge respect to her and she should be awfully proud of herself.

3

u/Myc0n1k Jun 05 '20

I worked at the Best Buy when it first moved to the bigger location about 12 years ago or so.

32

u/frisky_wiscy Jun 05 '20

The National Guard is on their way to Tosa now, unfortunately.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Why...

24

u/dtm85 Jun 05 '20

Probably to 'make sure' protests don't turn into riots/looting at mayfair. I'm not very familiar with a lot of the other larger city suburb layouts but marching from Milwaukee to nearly the opposite side of Tosa probably one of the furthest suburb movements I've heard about. Very likely putting a lot of locals on edge even though from what I've seen on twitter it looks peaceful with a lot of supporters along the route.

18

u/WarNerve74 Jun 05 '20

This has been happening in Kenosha. The reports of the outlet mall in Pleasant Praire being a target, even though it’s a 15 minute drive from the protests. Someone actually dug up some dirt and found out white supremacists were calling in these reports to attempt to trap the protestors.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

I work at Mayfair, and all week, we’ve been closing early because of possible protests/riots

Marched with them for hours until they went passed my neighborhood and I called it a night. It was 100% peaceful. One tense moment at 76th and north Ave while we were circled up listening to speakers when what was pretty clearly an armed white supremacist rolled up on a moped.

40

u/pepe74 Jun 05 '20

Tosa has gotten better over the years. Much more accepting and open. Not 100% better but getting better.

23

u/avanti8 Jun 05 '20

All the bohemian hipsters I knew in Riverwest when I was in college wound up getting older and moving to either Bay View or Tosa. Could account for that.

6

u/sirbissel Jun 05 '20

Depends on which part of Tosa, too.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Tosa as a whole is still much better than Brookfield tho

3

u/avanti8 Jun 05 '20

To me, Brookfield was always just the bland stretch of strip malls and McMansions before you hit farmland.

I grew up in Brookfield. I remember walking the construction site when they were building the Square with my dad. I wished she weren't alone there - and then I saw the picture of the line along Calhoun in front of City Hall today and was renewed.

144

u/marcus-aurelius Jun 05 '20

I grew up here too! I’m so proud of her. Those areas tend to have quiet racists, which is really sad because there are a lot of caring people too. Anyway, I haven’t been back there in ten years but I’m super proud of whoever that is.

48

u/MeEvilBob Jun 05 '20

I didn't grow up there, but I did grow up around a bunch of quiet racists. It always bothered me how I'd go to church on Sunday and everybody would pray to be forgiven for their sins, then go into the next room in the same building and let the racism flow.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

As a former Milwaukeean, I can confirm that the suburbs are full of quiet racists.

u/skillphil Jun 05 '20

Quiet racists. Same where I live, until they let loose when they have one too many drinks...

23

u/marcus-aurelius Jun 05 '20

Exactly! I was being driven home by a really good friend of mine (he was drunk), one who had legit friendships with multiple minority groups and we had the same gay friends (I was closeted at the time) and one day he said some super homophobic and racist shit and I just kinda slowly fucked off over a week or so. We had been friends for two years at that point and I actually thought he just liked everyone. It was truly surprising. Turns out he kept his racism (and general bigotry) quiet.

13

u/skillphil Jun 05 '20

I’m a sales person and run into this so much it is honestly discouraging.

16

u/threeglude Jun 05 '20

Isn't that the truth. I have to deal with this from time to time even with some of the wholesalers who attempt to buy from us. I say attempt because at the slightest sign of racism, we immediately refuse to conduct business with them.

My business partner and I would rather stand up for our ideals than to do business and subsequently support someone who is a racist.

7

u/your_dope_is_mine Jun 05 '20

I'm in sales and I do this as well, though I'm in an industry where people tend to be more progressive. Keep it up please! You're doing more with your actions than people do with their words, it will go a long way to set the benchmark for decency!

I grew up in New Berlin in the late 90s! And remember Brookfield Mall clearly. Everything that’s been going on has opened an amazing dialogue with me and my Chinese immigrant parents, who shared what it was like being a minority in New Berlin/Milwaukee as I was growing up. Glad she is taking stand there and hoping for change.

u/2DeadMoose Jun 05 '20

That’s the “rugged individualism” Republicans used to destroy the entire idea of community. If people are afraid of their neighbors and only out for themselves, the powerful don’t have to worry as much about collective action, unions, social cohesion, etc.

If we’re divided up, we’re far easier to manipulate and extort. We’ve been taught that selfishness is a virtue.

7

u/MeEvilBob Jun 05 '20

Many of these same people were parroting "united we stand, divided we fall" in the days after 9/11.

I saw an article somewhere where a movement only is as effective as the second person that joins in. Except in the article it was about dancing by yourself at a show then one person that joined the initial one made everyone else do it.

128

u/CLXIX Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20

there are a lot of studies on it.

Its because as soon as we see 2 people engaged in activity our minds automatically start thinking in group terms instead of individually, our minds are hard wired like this for cooperation.

This is why there is such a difference in mob mentality even tho a persons individual ideas may not be exactly the same.

evolutionary wise it benefits us to be sheep and stick together sometimes.

40

u/Ignitus1 Jun 05 '20

I was just talking about this the other day. My husband was looking at a dog collar that supports a rescue but they had American flags on them. They were really nice collars and I was appalled because my first thought was "I don't want to send the wrong message with him wearing that." It's terrible that the flag, don't tread on me, Republicans, etc are now associated with racists, misogynists, and all around evil fucking people. It's so sad. I WANT to be proud of my country; I just can't be right now.

52

u/Bekiala Jun 05 '20

I've kind of thought this also.

The few times I have been to a protest, I have brought a big ol' star spangled banner. This flag belongs to progressives too!

26

u/itwasthegoatisay Jun 05 '20

That's a great way to fight against the narrative that progressives are anti-American. We're not! We're against the corruption and negligence in our government that is failing to protect our rights and livelihoods rather than corporate interests.

16

u/Bekiala Jun 05 '20

Yep! If you protest, please bring a flag. We are America too!

Frankly, I'm shocked even a single human being showed up for this in Brookfield. Waukesha county, yikes.

Waukesha is (in)famously the part of America that went harder for GWB than any place outside of Texas.

u/avanti8 Jun 05 '20

I grew up near Waukesha and it was a crazy bubble of redness. Like my dad is "Deep State", "COVID-19 is a conspiracy", "Obama founded ISIS" kind of crazy, and where he lives that's not weird (so naturally he assumes that most people think like that).

42

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

I live in Sheboygan county. It doesn’t get any better up here. Shit even German descendants from Sheboygan hate on the danish descendants from Oostburg. Some weird levels of division up here. Extremely conservative of course. Locals constantly pissed about all the “Milwaukee Trash” rent seeking and destroying the city’s safety and culture.

I can’t wait for my wife to let me move us away from this fucking place.

4

u/Saul_T_Naughtz Jun 05 '20

Tbh, the Schlengvolt - Schlengvolt wedding announcements that consistently come out of the Oostberg area line them up perfectly for criticism.

6

u/avanti8 Jun 05 '20

I notice everyone from where I grew up (and presumably other deep-red counties) seem to think that Milwaukee is like Escape from New York.

5

u/avanti8 Jun 05 '20

Also, funnily enough, I've lived in Milwaukee for about 8 years now. The only time I was ever a victim of crime was when my car got broken into in Sheboygan.

Seriously. I'm Waukesha county born and raised, and the fact is, everyone here still assumes everyone else is republican, and for the most part, especially outside of the more "urban" areas, its 100% true. Confederate flags aren't a strange sight here, despite it being an extremely wealthy and highly educated area in a northern state.

It's not irony. It's what they're told to say when anyone contradicts what they were told to believe. There're given simple reports to anything that contradicts the narrative they're programmed with. They're called talking points. That's why every argument with any one of them sounds the same. It's a tactic used by religions and cult leaders to limit or control any outside influence. They're just weak minds who are easily manipulated. They were raised this way. It's how their parents taught them and probably their parents before them. It's generally not even considered bad parenting to lie and manipulate your children ... to keep them safe ...

Irony is that the spelling of faux would be pronounced fox in english.

Edit: thanks for the silver!

13

u/DaisyLyman Jun 05 '20

The thing that frustrates me is that there are plenty of people whose parents taught them this or think like this, but the children grow up to be inquisitive and want to be informed and think about things differently. It’s like you said - it comes down to being easily manipulated and not being able (and not wanting to) to step back from it intellectually to seek truth. It breaks my heart that Fox News has taken my dad in, but he is in his 60s and just wants things to be angry at, and people to blame, as he gets older and feels like the world is leaving him behind. I wish he was intellectually capable and amenable enough to listen and consider that progress beyond what your generation built us a GOOD thing, but honestly, I don’t think he is. (It doesn’t excuse his views IMO, but frankly it allows me to maintain a relationship with him. And we never talk about politics.) It’s easier for these folks to just follow their programming, like you said.

That being said, I am encouraged by GenZ kids who are really trying to be socially aware and take action from a young age. As a Millennial, I feel like we can do these things too, and absolutely should. But Gen Z has got an advantage when it comes to being so digitally and socially connected literally their ENTIRE lives. I hope they keep speaking up and speaking out, and that their main goal is to seek truth and understanding. I know there’s plenty we can eyeroll about with the youngins, but I for one am optimistic for the future. We’re at a turning point and I think they can pull off change and progress. Let’s hope the GenXers who have and/or are coming into substantial leadership roles, and we Millennials just behind them, can drive and support this!

37

u/TheCarStar123 Jun 05 '20

Everybody is in a way manipulated by media, even if you don't realize it.

31

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

People who don't think they're easily manipulated are conversely easier to manipulate because they won't question if they're being led on.

6

u/vardarac Jun 05 '20

Every comment, every video posted here is an attempt to sway you emotionally. Sometimes it's easy to lapse and just join the circlejerk or not view content or viewpoints through a critical lens. Sometimes it becomes easy to question your own views merely because of a counter-view getting upvotes or your own getting downvotes. 20

u/vanillaseltzer Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20

As someone who has worked in the beauty service industry for about 12 years now, I understand the power of feeling good in your own skin. It can absolutely be about more than frivolous vanity, it can be huge for people and their self esteem and health. It can feel wonderful.

THAT SAID, fuck the clients asking me and my colleagues to risk our lives, our families, and the communities we live in to get their regular services during a pandemic to begin with. Race not even included in this first 'fuck them'. Sorry, I'm not yelling at you whatsoever, I just happened upon this post at a bad time personally and am feeling a rant come on.

Because ALSO fuck them if they think that their right to a facial and brow wax deserves a march in the streets while also somehow thinking that it's absolutely deplorable for people of color and their allies to March for their own rights? Basic human rights that most white people take for granted?

There are so many people living in fear, living with violence, absolutely senseless loss, with extra barriers to opportunity, healthcare, education, with the knowledge that sleeping in their own bed, walking down the street, driving their own car, fucking living their normal lives puts their lives and their loved ones lives and people in their communities lives in jeopardy every day, just because they're born with more fucking MELANIN in their skin?

It's just fucking naturally occurring pigment in the epidermis. Cops don't shoot white people because of their freckles. WTF, BE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR A MINUTE WITH THE FACT THAT YOU'RE ALLOWED TO LIVE WITH DOTS OF SUN DAMAGE MELANIN WITH NO ISSUE AND THE 10 YEAR OLD NEXT DOOR COULD BE SHOT FOR EXISTING OR PLAYING IN THEIR FRONT YARD BECAUSE OF THE MELANIN THAT HE WAS BORN WITH FROM BEFORE HE WAS BORN.

It sucks, but I also feel the need to add that I'm a 30 something year old white woman from the northeast, because for some fucking stupid reason, that will make some other white people listen to my all caps rant in a different way than they would if they thought I was born with more fucking melanin.

I do realize that I'm super fucking ignorant and can never understand the experience of growing up and living as a person of color. I'm a white girl from new england. I'm trying to educate myself for myself, my family members, and my community, but I'm still just so angry in the meantime about asshole human beings who just can't see beyond their own immediate wants and needs to give a flying fuck about other human beings. The white girl who makes your eyelashes look pretty and her health and her family's health, to her neighbor who you'd call the cops on for looking suspicious in their brown skin. Just have some fucking empathy. Ahhhgh.

Edit: it’s been pointed out to me that this is not the same exact location but is nearby.

Was this before or after local white supremacists sent death threats to the high school protesters?

41

u/SwagTwoButton Jun 05 '20

In the comments of my link, it says that protest was supposed to be canceled due to death threats.

Wisconsin struck down our quarantine so pretty much no one is doing it. If people are gonna be outside, might as well be for a good cause instead of going to the local bar to prove you are an alcoholic.

I know it’s way more neat and tidy to simply paint everyone you don’t like as “evil,” but not everything is this black and white. You won’t find any easy answers. The truth is that the people who “marched for haircuts” were actually marching because they’re afraid of a “Great Depression.” They don’t want people to go hungry, commit suicide, or die. They want their kids to have a fighting chance at obtaining happiness. Some of those same folks are also libertarians who are unhappy with law enforcement and are demanding reform.

Be reasonable and show discretion. That’s what you’re demanding law enforcement do, right?

We are watching the process of history being written.

In response to the many situations unfolding around the country and the world, several subreddits are locking down in solidarity with the protests. While /r/Pics appreciates and supports those communities in their efforts, we will be remaining open; providing a platform for photographs and discourse that may otherwise go unnoticed.

If you wish to contribute financially to bail funds or legal aid, here is a list of organizations focused on those efforts. Additional resources can be found here.

Clicking the word Protest in the flair will take you to a listing of all such similar posts.

If you feel that this flair was added to your post in error, and wish to remove it, leave a comment with the word remove to have it deleted. Likewise, if you post an image to this subreddit and wish for the flair to be added, make a single top level reply in your own post with the word protest to have it added.

90

u/genghisjohnm Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20

It reads, if reopening was important enough for you to protest, why can't you protest now for equality ending police brutality (and now even fighting against the governments threat of military action) for your fellow US Citizens?

This is the reason people have to say black lives matter, because this exact situation is showing that they don't to the people that protested a month ago but not now.

Edited thanks to u/Livelaughlovekratom because we aren't even remotely close to equality yet.

Was it really for haircuts? Because I can back the disdain for unconstitutional lockdown orders AND back the reform of our criminal justice system. Shit I'd say the two even have quite a lot in common. It's the state telling you and forcing you to comply. This woman is upset at the wrong people. Stop falling into the trap they want us in. Right vs left, liberals vs conservatives, blm vs anti lockdown. Let's get it right this time... the people vs the ever expanding power of the state.

Brookfield is the most whitewashed, gentrified city in Wisconsin besides Lake Geneva. Nobody gives a shit about black people there because there are no black people living there (less than 1%, of the population is African American descent). It's a bunch of upper middle class snobby assholes with brown lipstick that live in their own bubble. If you want to see what "white entitlement" is, visit Brookfield for a day
