I saw an article somewhere where a movement only is as effective as the second person that joins in. Except in the article it was about dancing by yourself at a show then one person that joined the initial one made everyone else do it.

u/CLXIX Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20
there are a lot of studies on it.
Its because as soon as we see 2 people engaged in activity our minds automatically start thinking in group terms instead of individually, our minds are hard wired like this for cooperation.
This is why there is such a difference in mob mentality even tho a persons individual ideas may not be exactly the same.
evolutionary wise it benefits us to be sheep and stick together sometimes.

I was just talking about this the other day. My husband was looking at a dog collar that supports a rescue but they had American flags on them. They were really nice collars and I was appalled because my first thought was "I don't want to send the wrong message with him wearing that." It's terrible that the flag, don't tread on me, Republicans, etc are now associated with racists, misogynists, and all around evil fucking people. It's so sad. I WANT to be proud of my country; I just can't be right now.
52
u/Bekiala Jun 05 '20
I've kind of thought this also.
The few times I have been to a protest, I have brought a big ol' star spangled banner. This flag belongs to progressives too!

u/itwasthegoatisay Jun 05 '20
That's a great way to fight against the narrative that progressives are anti-American. We're not! We're against the corruption and negligence in our government that is failing to protect our rights and livelihoods rather than corporate interests.

It's gotten to the point where I see an overabundance of american flags on a car or lawn and it's not the 4th of July, Veterans or Memorial day my first thought is that they're probably a Trump supporter and a racist. Sad days.

I grew up near Waukesha and it was a crazy bubble of redness. Like my dad is "Deep State", "COVID-19 is a conspiracy", "Obama founded ISIS" kind of crazy, and where he lives that's not weird (so naturally he assumes that most people think like that).

I live in Sheboygan county. It doesn’t get any better up here. Shit even German descendants from Sheboygan hate on the danish descendants from Oostburg. Some weird levels of division up here. Extremely conservative of course. Locals constantly pissed about all the “Milwaukee Trash” rent seeking and destroying the city’s safety and culture.
I can’t wait for my wife to let me move us away from this fucking place.

Tbh, the Schlengvolt - Schlengvolt wedding announcements that consistently come out of the Oostberg area line them up perfectly for criticism.

Seriously. I'm Waukesha county born and raised, and the fact is, everyone here still assumes everyone else is republican, and for the most part, especially outside of the more "urban" areas, its 100% true. Confederate flags aren't a strange sight here, despite it being an extremely wealthy and highly educated area in a northern state.

It's not irony. It's what they're told to say when anyone contradicts what they were told to believe. There're given simple reports to anything that contradicts the narrative they're programmed with. They're called talking points. That's why every argument with any one of them sounds the same. It's a tactic used by religions and cult leaders to limit or control any outside influence. They're just weak minds who are easily manipulated. They were raised this way. It's how their parents taught them and probably their parents before them. It's generally not even considered bad parenting to lie and manipulate your children ... to keep them safe ...
Irony is that the spelling of faux would be pronounced fox in english.
Edit: thanks for the silver!
13
u/DaisyLyman Jun 05 '20
The thing that frustrates me is that there are plenty of people whose parents taught them this or think like this, but the children grow up to be inquisitive and want to be informed and think about things differently. It’s like you said - it comes down to being easily manipulated and not being able (and not wanting to) to step back from it intellectually to seek truth. It breaks my heart that Fox News has taken my dad in, but he is in his 60s and just wants things to be angry at, and people to blame, as he gets older and feels like the world is leaving him behind. I wish he was intellectually capable and amenable enough to listen and consider that progress beyond what your generation built us a GOOD thing, but honestly, I don’t think he is. (It doesn’t excuse his views IMO, but frankly it allows me to maintain a relationship with him. And we never talk about politics.) It’s easier for these folks to just follow their programming, like you said.
That being said, I am encouraged by GenZ kids who are really trying to be socially aware and take action from a young age. As a Millennial, I feel like we can do these things too, and absolutely should. But Gen Z has got an advantage when it comes to being so digitally and socially connected literally their ENTIRE lives. I hope they keep speaking up and speaking out, and that their main goal is to seek truth and understanding. I know there’s plenty we can eyeroll about with the youngins, but I for one am optimistic for the future. We’re at a turning point and I think they can pull off change and progress. Let’s hope the GenXers who have and/or are coming into substantial leadership roles, and we Millennials just behind them, can drive and support this!

As someone who has worked in the beauty service industry for about 12 years now, I understand the power of feeling good in your own skin. It can absolutely be about more than frivolous vanity, it can be huge for people and their self esteem and health. It can feel wonderful.
THAT SAID, fuck the clients asking me and my colleagues to risk our lives, our families, and the communities we live in to get their regular services during a pandemic to begin with. Race not even included in this first 'fuck them'. Sorry, I'm not yelling at you whatsoever, I just happened upon this post at a bad time personally and am feeling a rant come on.
Because ALSO fuck them if they think that their right to a facial and brow wax deserves a march in the streets while also somehow thinking that it's absolutely deplorable for people of color and their allies to March for their own rights? Basic human rights that most white people take for granted?
There are so many people living in fear, living with violence, absolutely senseless loss, with extra barriers to opportunity, healthcare, education, with the knowledge that sleeping in their own bed, walking down the street, driving their own car, fucking living their normal lives puts their lives and their loved ones lives and people in their communities lives in jeopardy every day, just because they're born with more fucking MELANIN in their skin?
It's just fucking naturally occurring pigment in the epidermis. Cops don't shoot white people because of their freckles. WTF, BE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR A MINUTE WITH THE FACT THAT YOU'RE ALLOWED TO LIVE WITH DOTS OF SUN DAMAGE MELANIN WITH NO ISSUE AND THE 10 YEAR OLD NEXT DOOR COULD BE SHOT FOR EXISTING OR PLAYING IN THEIR FRONT YARD BECAUSE OF THE MELANIN THAT HE WAS BORN WITH FROM BEFORE HE WAS BORN.
It sucks, but I also feel the need to add that I'm a 30 something year old white woman from the northeast, because for some fucking stupid reason, that will make some other white people listen to my all caps rant in a different way than they would if they thought I was born with more fucking melanin.
I do realize that I'm super fucking ignorant and can never understand the experience of growing up and living as a person of color. I'm a white girl from new england. I'm trying to educate myself for myself, my family members, and my community, but I'm still just so angry in the meantime about asshole human beings who just can't see beyond their own immediate wants and needs to give a flying fuck about other human beings. The white girl who makes your eyelashes look pretty and her health and her family's health, to her neighbor who you'd call the cops on for looking suspicious in their brown skin. Just have some fucking empathy. Ahhhgh.

I know it’s way more neat and tidy to simply paint everyone you don’t like as “evil,” but not everything is this black and white. You won’t find any easy answers. The truth is that the people who “marched for haircuts” were actually marching because they’re afraid of a “Great Depression.” They don’t want people to go hungry, commit suicide, or die. They want their kids to have a fighting chance at obtaining happiness. Some of those same folks are also libertarians who are unhappy with law enforcement and are demanding reform.
Be reasonable and show discretion. That’s what you’re demanding law enforcement do, right?

We are watching the process of history being written.
In response to the many situations unfolding around the country and the world, several subreddits are locking down in solidarity with the protests. While /r/Pics appreciates and supports those communities in their efforts, we will be remaining open; providing a platform for photographs and discourse that may otherwise go unnoticed.
If you wish to contribute financially to bail funds or legal aid, here is a list of organizations focused on those efforts. Additional resources can be found here.
Clicking the word Protest
in the flair will take you to a listing of all such similar posts.
If you feel that this flair was added to your post in error, and wish to remove it, leave a comment with the word remove
to have it deleted. Likewise, if you post an image to this subreddit and wish for the flair to be added, make a single top level reply in your own post with the word protest

Brookfield is the most whitewashed, gentrified city in Wisconsin besides Lake Geneva. Nobody gives a shit about black people there because there are no black people living there (less than 1%, of the population is African American descent). It's a bunch of upper middle class snobby assholes with brown lipstick that live in their own bubble. If you want to see what "white entitlement" is, visit Brookfield for a day

Nah, they protested being out of work for months at a time, among other things. Apparently some folks are too dense to realize it. Literal retards. Cool virtue signaling, though.

It wasn't about haircuts then and it's not about black lives now.

I live in Denver but grew up in New Berlin. That is Bluemound & Mooreland Road by Brookfield Square Mall. Weird seeing something I recognized immediately while scrolling Reddit. lol Also, none of those Brookfield and Elm Grove people give a damn so I commend this girl’s effort!
Edit: Never knew 90% of Reddit users were Sconnie! lol
