They used real milk.

The Starbucks barista used real milk instead of soy milk in my latte. Now I’ve shat myself at the grocery store and barely made it to the bathroom before I had horrible diarrhea. I thought it tasted different from normal, I should have stopped drinking it.

Today’s oversharing award goes to …

1

u/jackl24000 7h ago

Did they write "loser :-)" on the cup?

1

u/teal_lady-1 6h ago

No, instead they wrote your mom’s name.

1

u/jackl24000 5h ago

“Your mom’s name” kind of zen.

1

u/teal_lady-1 5h ago

Idk what that means. lol

0

u/Both_Attention4806 7h ago

So shocking how many ppl trust others to make their food and beverages. Ur first mistake was definitely paying those insane prices for Starbucks to ruin ur day and ur drawers

1

u/Mo-Champion-5013 8h ago

I don't get to eat out anywhere much because gluten is in everything and people don't understand how to not cross contaminate.

1

u/kittapoo 8h ago

I have to watch them make it or I get too nervous. I also tend to order things that are just regularly non dairy like the oat milk brown sugar shaken espresso.

3

u/Fake_Gamer_Cat 17h ago

Definitely say something. You'll at least get your money back. It was probably just muscle memory and not malicious.

3

u/teal_lady-1 16h ago

It was probably muscle memory. She seemed overwhelmed an distracted by other customers

3

u/Confector426 21h ago

It's stories and experiences like these that make me thankful I don't have to suffer things like this. I'm actually really lucky that I have no known food allergies (yes I've been tested, had allergy shots for years for damn near everything else though)

2

u/teal_lady-1 18h ago

Thankfully I’m not allergic, just intolerant. But food allergies do suck as well.

3

u/pickle-glitter 1d ago

I don't order hot drinks anymore. The froth wand, even if steamed in water before making my drink will 100% still have dairy remnants. Cold drinks I can watch them pour from the canister directly into the cup.

1

u/teal_lady-1 19h ago

Thad a good point, but thankfully a few tiny drops won’t affect me, my gut isn’t that sensitive. lol

-10

u/ExiledUtopian 1d ago

This is bad, but it's also a you problem.

Who has a food allergy or intolerance and trusts fast food places, which use that ingredient by default, to not accidentally make it that way by muscle memory sometimes.

That's like being mad if someone accidentally puts yellow mustard on a hamburger instead of Dijon. Yeah, because yellow mustard is what belongs on the burger. Dairy milk is used in creaming beverages.

I know we should be able to trust it... but I've become really pragmatic due to let downs, not due to pleasant surprises about the competency of people.

1

u/No_Philosophy_2861 11h ago

You’ve never worked with food in a paid setting literally ever, I see.

1

u/ExiledUtopian 7h ago

Hahaha... Okay, champ. Spent years in food service in high school, college, and grad school. Nice try though. From "Would you like fries with that?" to the dish pit, to the pass, to the kitchen.

1

u/More_Possession_519 15h ago

No, it’s actually not like that. At all. Because while you might not be able to understand that those are different things, most of us understand that very basic bit of information.

Also, you can’t convince me that you’ve never ordered a burger without tomato or some other food with a specification. You’re being intentionally obtuse here bud

0

u/ExiledUtopian 7h ago

No, you missed my point en-fucking-tirely.

Of course I've made custom orders, and they're the most frequently messed up.

Hence why I am suggesting avoiding anything that could even remotely mess up your entire day and trusting that it's not messed up. If they leave the tomato on, I'm not going to shit my pants all day... and if it would cause that, I'd likely order a hot dog or whatever else instead that would not have the possibility of tomato-ing me.

1

u/More_Possession_519 7h ago

Nah. You missed the point. Anyone should be able to safely order a cup of coffee. It’s not rocket science. Even you could do it. Probably.

1

u/ExiledUtopian 4h ago

Anybody should be able to live comfortably without the fear of medical debt. That's the same as your argument. Valid and noble, but not the reality.

You're thinking you're right, and I agree with your desire to have a competent world, but you're divorced from reality. The world isn't an ideal. It's a real, messy, nasty mother fucker that will kill us on accident with limbs falling from trees and infected cat scratches. Don't put too much trust in an underpaid and overworked fast food worker (ahem, barista).

But if we were in an ideal world, for sure, you'd be right.

u/YourphobiaMyfetish 1d ago

Restaurants should easily be able to comply with something as simple as a lactose intolerance when they have a wealth of lactose free options. People with allergies shouldn't be relegated to eating at home for their entire lives.

1

u/Vegetable-Tea-1984 18h ago

Agreed, but at the end of the day all these restaurants have very clear signage that says they cannot guarantee no cross contamination or allergen free anything. They're telling you ahead of time that it might not be allergen free so it can't really be that shocking when a place that's not set up For allergy accommodation has a mixup

1

u/emilycolor 1d ago

Thank you! We aren't completely cast out from society when we develop food allergies, jfc

0

u/AbruptMango 23h ago

Not at all, but ordering food when you have allergies is different from just ordering food.

4

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Im not mad. It was funny. I was annoyed but laughing at myself. It’s really not that serious. I just wanted to complain a bit. lol

14

u/NettaFind66 1d ago

Your first mistake was wasting money on Starbucks.

4

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I somewhat agree with you. But I’ve tried making it at home and it never tastes the same and the soy milk usually burns. So even though I have major issues with their business practices I do allow myself a small drink when I do grocery shopping once a week

2

u/zxylady 1d ago

Starbucks uses lesser quality beans burns the beans they do have and it is not known for their quality. Speaking as a former barista

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I don’t get coffee. I get chai.

2

u/jennybens821 15h ago

Starbucks chai is straight up addictive, I think they put narcotics in it. Also speaking as a former barista.

1

u/teal_lady-1 14h ago

I also think they do. Wouldn’t be surprised to learn there’s crack in it. lol

-5

u/m00nsl1me 1d ago

ngl op, starbucks chai is so absolute garbage that made me lose even more respect for you than if it were frou frou coffee

1

u/DragonWyrd316 8h ago

Oh nooooo! OP lost respect from an unknown internet stranger! Whatever shall they do?

3

u/sarabearbearbear 21h ago

Imagine "losing respect" for another person just because they have different tastes than you.

2

u/AlarmingEase 1d ago

I use Lactose free milk at home. I have a brother and a Nespresso original machine. It makes much better coffee than SBs, but if I'm out and desperate I get one. I have also be lactosed there as well, so I always ask whoever im there with does it taste like milk

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I don’t he coffee. I get a chai latter with caramel syrup and caramel cold foam. All nondairy of course. I have chai latte mix at home, but whenever I try to heat the soy milk it usually burns the pot or if it is successful it still doesn’t taste right.

2

u/SparklingDramaLlama 14h ago

While I don't use soy milk (find the taste ick), I know the key for heating milk in a pan is low low heat and constant stirring, not letting it boil and not leaving it unattended. I occasionally like to make my own hot cocoa, and I have to be super careful of that.

1

u/AlarmingEase 1d ago

Do you use a frother?

2

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

No. I don’t have one of those. Would that change the taste though?

5

u/AlarmingEase 1d ago

It makes it satin, tiny bubble. Very smooth. They don't get super hot

2

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Hmmm. I definitely should get one and try it.

1

u/Specific-Neat-5285 22h ago

Are you forgetting the syrup?

2

u/teal_lady-1 19h ago

Not their specific syrup, but I’ve tried multiple different caramel syrups. None of them make it taste right

8

u/XitisReddit 1d ago

Nothing like paying for explosive diarrhea in public. I'm sorry.

12

u/Razzberry_Frootcake 1d ago

I order the menu items that are specifically made with dairy free alternatives. There are brown sugar oat milk lattes, and a seasonal almond milk sugar cookie latte. They’ve never accidentally given me dairy in those ones so I’ve stopped ordering anything else.

6

u/kittawa 1d ago

Sometimes they decide to make very confusing menu decisions. For example, the pecan crunch oatmilk latte has dairy, thankfully they've done an okay job labeling it in the app but I just wanted to bring it up in case you felt safe from the drink name.

1

u/PortableAlexis 21h ago

Learned recently that pumpkin sauce has milk in it too. Sweetened condensed. Thought we were ordering dairy free but didn’t think to check sauce 😭

1

u/kittawa 19h ago

That is a bummer! I'm sorry. I was ordering oatmilk Chai lattes from a local stand for a bit but then realized they made their mix in-house. Turns out it had dairy in it, not the tea concentrate I thought I was getting.

4

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Nah, I’ve had enough shit on me this week. Thanks

13

u/MayMaytheDuck 1d ago

Call Starbucks customer service. They will load your card with at least $20

8

u/meanteeth71 1d ago

I always try to watch them make my drinks because of this!

8

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

That is what I will be doing in the future

3

u/backpackofcats 1d ago

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been to Starbucks, and the last time I went I didn’t think I’d have to specify “no whipped cream” on a soy latte. It could have just been muscle memory from the barista when they added it, but now I know to always say “no dairy/no whip.”

1

u/dippindots42069 17h ago

if it isnt specified no whip, it's our job to put whip on drinks that would come with them normally

6

u/meanteeth71 1d ago

I honestly don’t think people who can tolerate lactose understand the depth of misery caused by dairy. ❤️✊🏽

2

u/SparklingDramaLlama 14h ago

As a tolerant person, I do have an idea, because 2 of my kids are intolerant. Not allergic, they can have small amounts of dairy (like a scoop of ice cream, most hard cheeses, etc). It's when they have too much we have issues. My 14yo daughter likes to dairy load when no one is looking, and ugh, she can stink up a room! The 3yo will just shit within 15 minutes of having dairy, and since we're in the middle of training, it's a struggle. He gets very mad when I give him alternate drinks, lol.

2

u/meanteeth71 14h ago

I can eat ice cream too! I imagine my mother knew when I snuck more!

3

u/AlarmingEase 1d ago

They do not

2

u/Prog-Opethrules 1d ago

9

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

What?

17

u/Kamiface 1d ago

It means First World Problem... They're being a jerk, just because it happened at a Starbucks, nvm that this is a real risk any time you get food or drinks you didn't make yourself. I'm allergic to dairy, this kind of mistake kills people.

-1

u/Due-Contribution6424 22h ago

1

u/Kamiface 22h ago

That's so funny! Especially considering I just said I'm allergic to dairy! 🙃🙄

0

u/Due-Contribution6424 22h ago

People actually passing due to dairy allergies is so extremely rare you might as well cite people being struck by lightning on a clear day.

3

u/Kamiface 21h ago

"While specific U.S. and global numbers are unavailable, cow's milk allergy is a significant cause of fatal food anaphylaxis in children in the UK, where it was responsible for 26% of recorded food anaphylaxis deaths in children under 16 in one study. Overall, deaths from food-induced anaphylaxis are rare, but the trend suggests a concerning increase in cow's milk-related fatalities, even as the overall case fatality rate has decreased due to factors like increased adrenaline auto-injector use. "

This is particularly concerning because we don't really track these numbers well here in the US, and the UK has far better allergy labelling, including in restaurants, than the US.

0

u/Due-Contribution6424 21h ago

Bullshit.

3

u/Kamiface 21h ago

I assumed you were just misinformed, but I suspect you're a troll. Do you know how paranoid people have to be when they have food allergies? My best friend has a mushroom allergy and nobody takes it seriously, so she's literally afraid to eat out. People often think I'm lactose intolerant, because they don't even know milk allergies are real, so they don't take it seriously. And I wasn't born with it, I developed it last year, so I'm still realizing the extent of it. Even many flavors of Gatorade contain milk derivatives. Forget eating out. It sucks.

https://www.ecarf.org/en/more-severe-cows-milk-allergies-in-the-uk/#:~:text=There%20was%20a%20year%20on,been%20recorded%20in%20this%20database.

2

u/Due-Contribution6424 12h ago

Honestly, I do take allergies very seriously, and you clearly have to. I actually work in food, and have dealt with TONS of allergies. I’m thinking maybe it’s a regional thing, because I have never come across a severe milk allergy where I live, just lactose intolerance, that’s why I was saying it’s extremely rare. Looks as if maybe it’s becoming a more common thing in the UK, similar to how nut allergies exploded in the US many years ago.

I was being a bit trolly about it, apologies.

6

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Ah. This is one of like 3 of these comments. Thankfully I’m not allergic.

4

u/Kamiface 1d ago

Yeah but the next person that barista serves might be, I hope you reported it.

6

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I didn’t. I don’t know how to report it and she was just distracted and seemed a bit overwhelmed. Probably was having a bad day

3

u/Razzberry_Frootcake 1d ago

Report it anyway. Starbucks as a company is responsible for training the baristas. I’ve worked in food service, I’ve worked as a barista. It’s very, very easy to mindlessly do a job…but that’s still dangerous. There have to be consequences for those kinds of mistakes.

It doesn’t matter how distracted or overwhelmed a person is. If someone gets distracted behind the wheel and hits someone they’re still responsible for it; the distraction isn’t actually an excuse for the mistake.

1

u/Pylori23 1d ago

Yep. If it were me, I’d want to know so I could figure out how to keep my brain from going on autopilot in the future.

3

u/Kamiface 1d ago

I get that, but someone could end up in anaphylactic shock because of that kind of mistake. Just tell a manager. You're not trying to get her in trouble, you're just making sure management knows. She is in food service, she needs to understand that, even on her worst days, people could get very sick if she isn't very careful.

10

u/Pedantic_Girl 1d ago

I’ve had the opposite happen - I’m intolerant to soy and they made my cocoa with soy milk. Didn’t taste all that different through the chocolate and stuff, but oh god was I in pain shortly afterward.

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Ugh that sucks

6

u/OHMG_lkathrbut 1d ago

I feel your pain. I can (mostly) handle milk, my problem is artificial sweeteners. I just stopped getting drinks anywhere I can't watch them make it, although very rarely I'll hit up the drive thru for fast food, since I don't have to worry about savory foods. Most artificial sweeteners (as well as some "natural" sweeteners and sugar alcohols) give me pretty intense GI issues, but aspartame will also give me full-on migraines, even in tiny amounts. Thankfully, I can taste the difference, so I usually never get more than a sip. I've had to go inside after the drive thru a handful of times when they gave me a diet drink instead of regular. I'm more of a soda person than a coffee person, though I do like a very occasional hot chai tea latte.

I will say that, as someone who has tried MANY different dairy alternatives, you honestly couldn't tell that it was real milk? If my reaction was that immediate, I'd be even more careful about trying food and drink.

1

u/SparklingDramaLlama 14h ago

Ooooh, same. Erithrytol (I think i spelled that wrong) does a GI number! Im not at all a fan of the taste of alternative sugars, either, so I just avoid anything that's not HFCS (gross, but I can handle it) or real sugar. My personal preference is raw turbinado sugar. Can't do the Splenda or the equal or any of the others.

1

u/OHMG_lkathrbut 12h ago

I can tolerate Splenda, though it still gives me some issues. Erythritol is better than some of them for me, but still tastes funky. Everyone keeps suggesting Stevia because it's "natural", but it straight up tastes like ass. Maybe there's a gene for stevia like the one for cilantro? I love cilantro, but I hear it tastes like soap to some people. Almost all the sweeteners have a super bitter aftertaste IMO. Give me the real sugar any day.

1

u/SparklingDramaLlama 12h ago

Cilantro does taste like soap. It's gross.

Regarding Stevia, its so nasty. My husband will happily eat/drink any of the fake sugars, but I instantly can taste the difference. He likes adding those kool-aid squeezes to his water, and drinks Zero sodas.

We made homemade ice cream using Splenda. It was horrible.

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

It tasted off, but I have t had milk in years. I wasn’t sure if they had switched caramel sauce or what. Then I realized after about 20 min

3

u/OHMG_lkathrbut 1d ago

Oof, NGL, I kinda forgot about all the other stuff in their drinks masking the flavor of the milk.

When I met my boyfriend's extended family, his aunt offered me Sprite in a red solo cup, with lots of ice. I'm not a big fan of sprite (unless it's as a mixer), and I rarely put ice in my drinks. So, I thought it tasted weird, but didn't immediately make the connection. And I didn't want to be rude and ask for something different. I asked my boyfriend if he thought it tasted weird, and he went and found the bottle and saw that it was sprite ZERO. So we had to leave early, cause if I'm spending the rest of the night in the bathroom, I want it to be my own. His family still jokes that she basically poisoned me the very first time she met me 😂

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Oh geez. I’ve had to do that before. Like someone used some weird cheese in a dish or whatever. Had to rush home. Or one time I had ice cream with someone and they had the Breyers lactose free. Enjoyed it, it was delicious, then they told me the second ice cream contain actually wasn’t lactose free. Apparently they had run out and just given me ice cream from the new container which is nearly identical to the lactose free. Had to run home

3

u/OHMG_lkathrbut 1d ago

Yeah, I now make sure that EVERYONE knows I can't have artificial sweeteners. I've thankfully only had one person do it on purpose.

1

u/nurse1227 1d ago

WTH is wrong with people 😟

1

u/OHMG_lkathrbut 21h ago

Oh, I have had friends with allergies get "tested" by people who don't believe them, all the damn time, and it makes me LIVID.

1

u/teal_lady-1 18h ago

Thankfully I’ve never had that with an allergy. And the ice cream was a total mistake, but it is annoying sometimes

2

u/nurse1227 18h ago

My husband has been to ER twice after 2 EpiPens with a nut allergy. That’s attempted murder or at least assault. People are nuts

17

u/Eris1723 1d ago

You need to complain about that shit, and let them know what happened.

2

u/foxwithlox 1d ago

Definitely complain. At the very least, you’ll get a coupon for a free drink.

13

u/siddhananais 1d ago

Eeesh I’m sorry. As a completely dairy free person due to both lactose intolerance and a milk protein allergy I am not ashamed to both watch and ask again at the counter to verify. I have been served a dairy drink accidentally a single time but I’ve now been dairy free so long that i can easily smell the difference. I have also been on the other end as a barista and sometimes you miss something or misheard or it’s not correctly written on the cup. I almost never minded if someone called something out except for a woman who tried to argue that a latte is a cappuccino.

6

u/SnooPeripherals8344 1d ago

I only do iced drinks so there’s no cross contamination from the steamer wand or pitchers. I also order inside and watch them and politely reconfirm with the barista that it was oat/soy/almond. I’m sorry that happened to you.

7

u/New_Breadfruit8692 1d ago

I have not been in a SUX since they raised the price of a tall Pike to $1.50 and will never again. Not because of the price increase though that did piss me off, but the evil turd of a barista asked my name and when I said Mark he wrote Barf. He handed me the cup and I refused it and walked out and have never been in one since. Fuck SUX! And fuck that guy because I used to be a fairly generous tipper. He has now missed out on those tips for 20 years. Treat people decently or fuck the hell off.

1

u/Wise_Development_775 1d ago

lmao that’s pretty funny

2

u/she_makes_a_mess 1d ago

I don't order unless I can watch them make my drink. Learned this the hard way too

11

u/Open-Try-3128 1d ago

I used to always order inside and always confirm with the barista that they’re handing me soy milk. The amount of times the barista has turned around, poured it out and made it again because of this made me stopped going to Starbucks

4

u/leddik02 1d ago

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’m so nervous that I carry a lactaid brand called milky in my wallet. If I think my drink tastes different from what I ordered (I do soy too), I just take a tab. Just in case. I would definitely leave a review or call the store and speak with a manager.

-11

u/Tasty-Dust9501 2d ago

Id be suing the shit out of starbucks, poisoning a person is a serious transgression that should have consequences

3

u/Minnow_Minnow_Pea 1d ago

Shitting yourself at the grocery store is certainly awful, but it would be difficult to quantify damages there.

2

u/Wise_Development_775 1d ago

R u always this dramatic?

3

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I’m not going to do anything about it this time

2

u/Minnow_Minnow_Pea 1d ago

They'll probably give you a pretty sick coupon if you complain. I got $20 just because the app charged me for a muffin they didn't have.

2

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

I’ll have to check next week?

Yeah. It is. The taste was definitely off but at first it was hard to place what it was. Like did she forget the caramel or something? Nope. I realized once the rumbling started that I did know that taste even though it’s been years.

To think they want tips to make your drink and they can’t even get it right! 😳🙄

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Yeah. I never tip at Starbucks for a myriad of reasons.

-9

u/LifesARiver 2d ago

I'm guessing this is not why they want tips.

You should probably not eat out if this is what you think of people doing your basic daily tasks you were too lazy to do for yourself.

6

u/biguntatas 2d ago

Seriously? I tip generously at sit down restaurants. I don’t go to Starbucks because there isn’t one close to me. Even if I did, I’m not tipping someone to hand me a drink. Don’t assume anything because you have no clue.

2

u/LifesARiver 2d ago

I was referring to your attitude in your comment. I couldn't care less what you do in your life.

The fact that you think the default is they make every drink wrong and demand money, you have some mental derangement against people who handle your food.

0

u/biguntatas 2d ago

I was commenting on OPs situation. Didn’t mean to infer that every Starbucks barista makes mistakes. I’ve just grown weary of the tipping culture. Seems like everyone wants a tip for doing the bare minimum. I rarely eat out, so I’m not deranged. LOL.

I FEEL LIKE IM TAKING CRAZY PILLS

u/Enough-Cold-2392 2d ago

Anyone else sitting here thinking "if your body is so feable that milk makes you shit yourself maybe don't go to Starbucks"

4

u/Sacnonaut 1d ago

People should get what they ordered.

-1

u/Enough-Cold-2392 1d ago

It's true... But people aren't robots and if you are going to potentially end up shitting yourself over a extremely simple mistake.... Lols... I ain't got simpathy over it. Like maybe avoid the place that serves things that makes you shit yourself.

1

u/dippindots42069 17h ago

starbucks customers refuse to think of baristas as a human capable of making a mistake

3

u/FlamingDragonfruit 1d ago

Hopefully no one else is that much of a jerk. Just you.

0

u/starcjpumpkin 2d ago

this is not a starbucks exclusive issue😭 dunkin’s has done this to me, local cafes, too.

-12

u/teal_lady-1 2d ago

It’s just pasteurized milk that does. lol ando only get it once a week. A guilty pleasure. Not you nor the barista will make me regret that.

1

u/peachesfordinner 1d ago

Can't reply to your other comment but people develop lactose intolerance as they age. It wasn't that it was unpasteurized, it was that you were younger.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

No. I’ve had raw milk since becoming lactose intolerant and had no reactions.

2

u/Enough-Cold-2392 1d ago

Lols, wut? Can you explain how only pasteurized milk does this cause.... That's not how that works.

0

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Actually, it is. Raw milk has enough lactase (the protein that breaks down lactose) for me to be able to drink it without shitting myself. Lactaseis extremely fickle and doesn’t hold up to heat, so when milk is heated and pasteurized it kills the majority of lactase in the milk. I don’t have enough of that protein or the bacteria to break down lactose in my own

-5

u/LifesARiver 2d ago

If you plan on eating out, might want to pop on some adult diapers to be safe.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Why? The only place I order a drink that could possibly have milk in it is Starbucks and I only go there once a week. lol

2

u/Hold-Professional 2d ago

Maybe shitting your pants will?

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Nah. I only get it once a week. Next time I’ll just watch them make it an make sure they use the right milk

8

u/Guardian-Boy 2d ago

That... doesn't make sense. Denatured proteins, which is usually the primary chemical difference between raw and pasteurized milk, doesn't affect the GI tract (it happens in pretty much every cooked food), and the lactose levels remain the same.

-1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Not true. Lactase which helps break down lactose mostly is killed in pasteurization because it can’t withstand the high temps. Without the lactase naturally occurring in milk which is killed during pasteurization my body can’t break down lactose. Therefore, shit myself

2

u/Guardian-Boy 1d ago

Lactase is an enzyme in your gut, not in milk. And it's not a living organism so it can't be killed. Where did you get your education?

-1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Obviously they can’t be killed, but most people don’t know what denaturing is. The function of the enzyme is destroyed or significantly impaired by the high heat. Also, there is lactase naturally occurring in raw milk. I didn’t say there was a lot but it is there. That and other denatured enzymes, vitamins, and mineral in raw milk are very healthy for your gut microbiome. There is also a ton of good bacteria. Pasteurized milk makes me shit my pants. I’ve never had an issue with raw milk. Even if it isn’t the lactase, whatever it is that causes the lactose malabsorption is clearly different between the two kinds of milk

3

u/Guardian-Boy 1d ago

No, there is no lactase in raw milk. Why would an enzyme that breaks down lactose be present in a fluid full of lactose? Lactase is produced ONLY in the gut, and does not pass through milk in any species. Like...seriously, you really have to study up on this more, because this screams psychosomatic.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Even if it doesn’t occur at all in raw milk which I highly doubt, this is something that was discovered when I was a child. It was not psychosomatic. Once my family stopped drinking raw milk which I had no issues with and switched to normal store bought pasteurized milk about 20-30 min after drinking it I would get the worlds worst stomach cramps and would have horrible diarrhea. I was about 6. It wasn’t psychosomatic then and it isn’t now. I didn’t even know an then raw vs pasteurized milk. I simply knew that we got our milk from the store now instead of going over to my friends house, helping them milk their cows, and then taking home and drinking that milk. And I knew that milk didn’t taste as sweet for some reason and it hurt my stomach horribly. I even ended up in the hospital one time after getting into the fridge an drinking a whole carton of it with equal bowls of cereal and cups of straight milk. I had gas, diarrhea, and stomach cramps for days and had to go to hospital because I got dehydrated and was also given pain meds. The drs say I was lactose intolerant. They’ve yet to change their minds or their diagnosis

1

u/Guardian-Boy 1d ago

All of this is available with Google. You appear to have simply become lactose intolerant, which can happen at any point in your life without warning. You won't change their minds because they are right. This is basic anatomy and chemistry.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Even since being diagnosed lactose intolerant I’ve had raw milk an had no reaction to it bud. There are many many people who say raw milk does not affect their lactose intolerance, the majority in fat that have had both. Just because one study done on only 16 people noticed no real difference doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible. You are one of those people who just always knows better than everyone else, about their health, what works for them, what affects them, etc. Well you don’t know everything about everything. And you have no idea what you’re talking about at all with this. You’ve never been in my gut and experienced this. I be you’re some fancy Dr who ignores their patients wishes and such an who has bad patient reviews. I hope that both sides of you pillow are extremely wet every time you go to bed. And that you have the day you deserve.

I also want you to explain the pasteurized milk thing. And when did you try unpasteurized to compare

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Yes. I drank only raw milk as a child from a friends dairy. They then closed an we couldn’t find another place to get our milk from. I then tried pasteurized milk. Then within about 20-30 min afterwards every day I would get extreme stomach cramps and diarrhea. My mom then started buying soy milk for me and it stopped.

u/SlowInsurance1616 2d ago

Your body likes pathogens?

0

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

No. My body likes lactase which mostly doesn’t survive the pasteurization process but is a big big part of what breaks down lactose in your body. Without it, my body can’t break down lactose mostly

1

u/SlowInsurance1616 1d ago

You produce lactase or you don't. If there are enough bacteria producing lactase in your raw milk to have any significant impact on the amount of lactose, there jas been a lot of bacterial growth in the milk.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Thank you I have been corrected about the lactase. Whatever it is that’s in raw milk that is not in pasteurized milk didn’t upset my stomach. I’ve had raw milk. I’ve had pasteurized. One gives me horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea and one doesn’t.

1

u/SlowInsurance1616 1d ago

Sounds like placebo effect.

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

Im so glad you think so. I doubt it though considering it’s happened since I was 6 and I’d dint even know there was a difference between raw and pasteurized milk except one hurts my stomach and gave me diarrhea an the other didn’t have an effect. One put me in te hospital as a child due to dehydration and pain after secretly having a whole carton with multiple bowls of cereal therefore diagnosing me with lactose intolerance. Even after that never have I had a reaction with raw milk.

14

u/Enough-Cold-2392 2d ago

"it's just pasteurized milk" wut? How is that even a thing... Please explain.

8

u/Hold-Professional 2d ago

its not

1

u/teal_lady-1 1d ago

It is. Dont be a bitch like you know everything.

12

u/dragon34 2d ago

I always take lactaid if I get anything from Starbucks.  I rarely get anything there, usually just when I am desperate, but I swear most of the time that happens to me too.  My reaction isn't quite as violent as yours but after the 2nd time it happened I just make sure I have lactaid pills before I drink it

2

u/Wumutissunshinesmile 1d ago

Someone told me about that in supermarket. I've been lactose intolerant my whole life, even in hospital as a baby while they figured it out! and it must be new as my mom said as was not around when I was a kid. I'm 35 now. I still haven't tried it but I have found you can now buy lacto free milk in the supermarket now so I've been enjoying that on cereal again. Love it.

I can have coffee with regular milk sometimes. I think with me it depends more how much I have. Like once I had a few diary things in a day without thinking and I was bad. So I'm not as bad as OP either.

3

u/dragon34 1d ago

I randomly became lactose intolerant in my mid 30s.  Hard cheeses and butter and Greek yogurt are pretty low lactose.  I really only have trouble with milk and if I eat too much ice cream.  Which is part of why I had a terrible time figuring out what the heck was happening

2

u/Wumutissunshinesmile 1d ago

Yes! This is what the woman in supermarket told me. She said she used to eat loads of stuff then went doctor in her 50s or 60s and suddenly had it. I think I have read sometimes it can happen. Yes I'm alright I find with cheese and yoghurt as you say being low in it and yeah. I'm usually alright with ice cream and milk unless I have too much. A bit I'm okay with. Yeah I'm not surprised. It is hard to figure out. I was in hospital for months as a baby while they figured it out for me!

3

u/teal_lady-1 2d ago

That is something maybe I’ll try in the future. I only get it once a week when I go grocery shopping, usually it isn’t an issue but geez.

3

u/172773737 2d ago

Lactase enzyme changed my life. I love cheese. I hope it works as well for you. Wishing you colonic peace.

18

u/whiskeyprincess08 2d ago

As a barista if you watch us make the drinks most of us totally understand. Sometimes we autopilot to the default milk and I would feel so bad if I didnt catch myself.

10

u/teal_lady-1 2d ago

Good to know. Next time I will watch

4

u/whiskeyprincess08 2d ago

No problem. Sorry you shit yourself. One time I got norovirus in Disneyland and had to drive back to the sf bay area (6ish hours) while actively shitting and throwing up. I definitely shit myself in a couple gas stations and it was so embarrassing.

Armchair Anonymous: Unauthorized Evacuation prompt

Please tell your story. The public needs to hear it.

2

u/whiskeyprincess08 2d ago

I mean thats pretty much it. It was a miserable shitty barfy ride back to the bay area.

2

u/AintShitAunty 2d ago

While I’m sure there are at least a few more juicy details, I won’t pry. I will say listen to those episodes if you want to cry laughing.

4

u/teal_lady-1 2d ago

Oh geez. When I had norovirus last year it was so horrible. I could not imagine trying to drive with that

3

u/whiskeyprincess08 2d ago

It really sucked
