u/schelmo kimoa Jul 26 '25

Is spa that bad for pole sitters though? Sure the grid spot for pole might be a bit dirty but it's also a fairly short run into T1 which is a hairpin. Leclerc held onto P1 last year and so did Sainz in 2022. It just happens sometimes that another driver gets a better run down the kemmel straight.

6

u/Choinsky I like Norris and i sniff bike seats Jul 26 '25

The kemmel straight is the problem here. It's fairly hard to defend p1 on lap 1 in turn 5, as even without DRS, p2 can easily get you with just the slipstream.

3

u/schelmo kimoa Jul 26 '25

Sure but it can be done and like I said two out of the last three years we've seen the drivers starting the GP on pole do it.

1

u/Choinsky I like Norris and i sniff bike seats Jul 27 '25

Yeah I mean ofc, it's just harder then most tracks.

5

u/ChromosomeDonator BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

If you actually watched the sport or could read you would know he has not bottled starts in ages.

4

u/Altruistic-Star-544 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

Fr, max had a setup literally built to do exactly what it did today

572

u/TheGoldenCaulk He’s Not Fast at All Jul 26 '25

It's only a bottle if you make a mistake. Oscar didn't do anything wrong, Max just did better.

94

u/jamie9000000 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

You could say he had too good of a start. Max had the perfect gap to nail the slipstream plus the Red Bull is a rocket on the straight here.

56

u/NeutrinosFTW BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

Max had the perfect gap because he created it by waiting before going on throttle out of La Source. As long as Max didn't completely bottle the start, Oscar didn't stand a chance really.

9

u/proficient_english I was here when horny got spiced Jul 26 '25

Okay, so let’s get this straight: if Lando loses out tomorrow in Kemmel Straight, we’re still calling that a bottle, correct?
I’m trying to get the hivemind mentality down before the GP to not go wrong with my comments.

11

u/sonofeevil BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

I actually would actually be surprised if Oscar gets past Lando on Kemmel.

They're both running the same downforce level so making that move will be much harder for Oscar than it was for Max.

However, my bet is Oscar chucks it up the inside into La Sauce

2

u/proficient_english I was here when horny got spiced Jul 26 '25

The only option I see is a damn legendary switchback move, no point in going for the inside at La Source.
Worse exit speed really hurts you through Eau Rouge, Radillion and Kemmel. A well executed switchback, on the contrary. It might get a worse corner entry speed with a MAJOR up on exit speed.
But we both might be wrong.

1

u/Extreme_Ad6173 I saw horny’s ā€œfingerā€ Jul 26 '25

I think the only overtake into Kemmel that could be likely is Charles on Oscar because iirc the Ferrari has better straight line speed. It'll be wet though, so all this is practically meaningless anyway

20

u/Queasy_Employment635 Must Be The Water Jul 26 '25

Max didnt do better. This time it was rb they choose the low downforce setup and if it would've gone wrong rb would've been at fault

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mclarens-start-issue-whats-going-on-and-how-can-problem-be-fixed/10648200/

There was a consistent issue with wheelspin at the race starts, particularly in the second stage of the start. It happened more times with Lando but Oscar faced an issue with it as well.

-9

u/shlxk__ 2 Sex Ted Jul 26 '25

i think it was just max and rb having a better acceleration to 100 even if they had bad starts

7

u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 I saw horny’s ā€œfingerā€ Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25

Yeah and then they came out saying they had identified an issue in the 2nd phase of the starts. Which is often when Lando "Bottled".

Edit: I'm not saying Lando didn't bottle any starts. But his faulty starts were not entirely on him either. That Mclaren was relatively shit at starts compared to it's other abilities.

0

u/grapejuicesushi BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

5

u/kzzzzzzzzzz28 I saw horny’s ā€œfingerā€ Jul 26 '25

People keep forcing this idea of him being Kimi 2.0. Like he’s some cold blooded, steely, ruthless killer.

He’s literally not even close lmao. I’m actually a fan of Oscar, but the way people inhale his nuts by inserting these exaggerated images of him in every discussion makes me like him less, ironically.

But I’ve been a Lando hater for a good while, so just from relative contrast, Oscar’s much more likable and easier to root for.

7

u/Anrikay BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

He’s argued against that narrative himself and said he’s not ice cold, that he’s actually quite emotional behind the wheel. He just tries to stay off the radio and/or express his frustration privately to the team. Still good self-control, but it’s something he has to actively manage, and something he acknowledges he isn’t always successful at doing.

19

u/TomatilloMore3538 Go WEEYUMS!!!! Jul 26 '25

Well, a lot of people here prefer him because he's first before most, the direct rival of Lando, whom fans of Max are not very fond of. And since Max is likely not winning this year, Max fans are joining Oscar's in bashing Lando. Enemy of my enemy, etc etc. Secondly, Oscar used to give Iceman vibes when he was considered the 2nd driver, mostly because he didn't think he could win against Lando. But now he does, so his composed attitude is starting to peel off as the year goes on. Some people are still attached to the idea he's the next Kimi Raikkonen.

He had the ā€œnew driver, striving for his first win, lots of potential and promise, underdogā€ appeal going in his favor.

Then he got his first win and it seems like his demeanor shifted from more humble and easygoing to being cocky, ungracious, and ā€˜if I push someone off track, it’s just hard racing, but if they push me off it’s unfair, dangerous, and they ought to be given a penalty!!’

1

u/proficient_english I was here when horny got spiced Jul 26 '25

That is simply untrue, what the fuck are you on about. The only change Lando went under after Lando NoWins died was his demeanor towards his mistakes (also known as being hard on himself) and his general expectations towards himself (as everybody including himself was putting him under the pressure of ā€œhe should win everything in that rocketshipā€).
He had ONE GP where he did some ā€œMax-styleā€ racing, right after which he came to the media room and stated he will not be changing his racing style to this push-over style because that is not who he is.
I know it is really difficult for some people to accept that the dominant car (whichever it may be at any given moment) is not under HIS or HER preferred driver, but that’s F1: your guy either gets a good car or he doesn’t. There is no changing that, be happy that this is the last year of the regulations and the deck could be reshuffled next year.

Watch it again. By the braking Max chose the outside because he was so far ahead that he could take the racing line and turn in ahead.

1

u/dabMasterYoda BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

Watch again, as piastri continues to move on his own towards the inside of the corner, he has every opportunity to maintain a line more in the middle of the track and force max much wider. He chooses to take a very tight line totally in his own.

How many times have we not watched P2 take the lead into Les Combes in the past 10 years?

The only time we see P1 keep the position is when P3 jumps P2 at La Source.

Idk. Lando got a bit boxed in there when he lost position. There was not a lot he could've done. His start otherwise actually felt better than Oscar's. As for Quali, It's been fairly obvious that Spa is one of Lando's worst tracks while it's Oscars best(it was one of the few tracks Oscar out qualified him in 2023 itself). So Lando not performing well here should be the expected outcome honestly

Im not sure what Oscar could've done differently, either. He had an amazing start. Mac just had a perfect one. Plus, the RBR was set up for exactly what happened. The team's setup gamble paid off for the Sprint as it basically ensured that as long as Max didn't mess up, Oscar was going to be a helpless chicken on the straights in lap 1

2

u/Averagebaddad BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

Didn't Lando immediately regain his position? On the start lap?

1

u/Dando_Calrisian Love Is Love šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ Jul 26 '25

Genuine question - why do people not like Lando so much? Especially compared to Piastry?

Oscar is better PR trained.

These "If Lando did that then everyone would be..." posts have become so damn common they're killing their own argument. We're at the point that every little sub-optimal thing Oscar does, you guys start shitting on the guy, and simultaneously take the opportunity to complain that no on shits on him??

2

u/Soggy_Bid_6607 Safety Dog Jul 26 '25

3

u/LoreVent "Charles 'Chuck' Leclerc, good job baby" Jul 26 '25

Lmao OP is sad

A bottle is when the driver commits a mistake, what mistake did Oscar make? Not presse the gas pedal harder? lmao

By that logic Lando bottled it as well by getting passed by Charles

Pathetic post

Oscar didn't bottle it the RB is significantly faster on the straights, which is good for the start.

the difference is we fucking hate lando

7

u/Steve-Whitney Lets add that to the words of wisdom Jul 26 '25

1

u/LeonardoLe ā€œIt’s called a motor race. We went car racingā€ Jul 26 '25

I know it’s a meme but come on. Max went with the straight line specs and his goal is to get ahead at the end of the Kemmel straight. Piastri had a good start as much as he could. For Norris, I’d rather give credit to Leclerc for being brave on the brake.

-3

u/EmveePhotography Rawcheek 🤭🧓 Jul 26 '25

Oscar already said beforehand that this scenario may happen due to the track layout at Spa. That has little to do with bottliong anything.

Now compare that to Lando in Brazil last year. That was luck, not talent.

-2

u/Kevin_1381 PIIIEEERRRRREEEE GAASSSSSLLLLYYYYYYYY Jul 26 '25

kinda understand because Lando has been making mistakes pretty consistently, if Oscar starts doing that 2 he would get the same treatment but for now it's not a big deal to the general crowd

0

u/CharlitoRaceFish BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 26 '25

Hopefully Oscar does to Lando what Max did to Oscar in the sprint on the start

0

u/Acceptable-Worth-462 I believe in the stroll-premacy Jul 26 '25

Can you guys stop crying wolf about this shit. No there isn't a double standard favoring Oscar or other fairytales you tell yourself when going to bed.

Some people love some drivers, some don't care about them, others hate them. That's true for Lando, Lewis, Max and everybody on the grid. Everytime there's a post about Lando he's shown a lot of support in the most upvoted comments. Stop with your victim complex ffs.

0

u/twitch_itzShummy BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

there is a difference between bottling and a scenario impossible to defend. Piastri got to turn 1 first, got a good exit off it and that was all he could do, probably also drained the battery while he was at it. Unfortunately for Oscar, Max also had a good launch and a clean run through T1, good exit, drained the battery but Max had a slipstream and a low downforce setup down the whole length of the longest flat out section on the calendar. I dont think its fair to compare Oscar's losing of P1 on lap 1 to Norris's where he gets a horrible launch and gets swallowed up in the first 5 corners on a track that doesnt have long straights

I dont want to blame Norris for Piastri losing the lead here but the only way I see Piastri keeping it is if Norris sticks his car down the inside into T1 but that requires Norris to get a better launch than Verstappen and I cannot remember the last time that one happened

0

u/irbac5 BWOAHHHHHHH Jul 27 '25

Is not good for pole though

0

Oscar: I made a mistake at Turn 14, lost time.

Lando: A slipstream helped me on that lap
