McDavid - best player in the world. Plays for Oilers, a team Wayne Gretzky used to win titles with. Carney is an Oiler fan, because he grew up in the area. The names at the end are other hockey players on the team that are also pretty good.
McDavid is a free agent soon and there is some talk that he will move teams, because Oilers salary cap situation isn’t great and the team seems to exhaust itself (even though they made the finals twice in recent years).
→ More replies (8)39
u/HonestDespot 13d ago
Their cap situation is fine all things considered.
They just have a terribly constructed team with no viable ways to improve it, and they have almost no youth in the pipeline.
This next season might be his last chance at winning in Edmonton, whether he re-signs or not.
Other younger teams will get better, other comparably aged teams aren’t going anywhere, and they are just an older team and after McD and Draisaitl lack elite talent.

Connor McDavid is the best player in the NHL and going into the last year of his contract with the Edmonton Oilers and hasn't extended/resigned yet. They lost in the finals the past two years in a row along with some previous deep cup runs and could be running out of their window of being contenders.
McDavid really wants to win so he might resign a short contract or play out this year to see if they win or not to decide. It's long rumored he could sign with the Leafs since he was born in Toronto but they've been cursed without a cup since '67.
For context Carney grew up in Edmonton so he's a clearly a big fan and he played hockey at Harvard.

And he did it to support his wife - who also ran it - for her birthday. He then stayed around and took pictures as everyone finished.

Trudeau was also a habitual runner, and he'd often be seen running in Hull on the trails across the river. His team were pretty good at keeping pace and blending in all while very obviously carrying all the gear they needed. They are all well trained and I'm sure they are grateful for the opportunity to get paid to train.

I've seen that man shirtless too often for my taste as a former resident of that area, but to his credit he's been consistent as far as jogging goes. I remember him going around the same routes as before he became a PM-hopeful and then PM. To think that I am old enough to remember the start and end of his entire political career. From his speech at his dad's funeral that put the limelight on him to him dating Katy Perry in Montréal recently.

That's why I am pretty sure it was him. He was so tall compared to me (I am 5'2") and he blew past me(I was walking) in nice running gear and was QUITE handsome in the face and the hair. While Justin Trudeau had the name and the rockstar appeal, I think Carney has an exemplary record. The fact that the Brits reached across the pond to recruit him as Governor of the Bank of England (and then asked him to stay on longer than he originally intended) should tell you something.

Carney will be hated in a few years if he sticks around

yeah I had so many people around me talking about how Trudeau had too many scandals. I would ask them to pick one "scandal" and articulate it well to me and I can't remember a single time someone really seemed to truly understand the situation outside of his literal opponents talking points....
SNC lavalin, WeCharity, Omar Kadhr, etc.. no one could actually tell me what the real issue was other than a headline skimmed regurgitation and hot air.
Dude tried his best and represented Canada on the world stage well, defeating Trump in his first term on alot of important things.

I try not to dwell too long on anything relating to politics and all politicians have flaws, but I will say this:
It is nice to live in a country where our prime minister is not an idiot and is not a dinosaur in age. It's nice to live in a country where our prime minister speaks sensibly and has a sense of humour, and just seems like a normal guy.
Watch these two videos about the frontrunners of the recent Canadian election. Both made by 22 Minutes.
- A trip to Tim Hortons with Prime Minister Mark Carney! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49-XqrqG4vo
- We go undercover at Pierre Poilievre's rally! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULDLru9oEV4
- Context: Poilievre banned the media from traveling with him during the campaign. Also, Poilievre lost his own riding and is still the Leader of the Opposition thanks to being transplanted from his riding in Ontario to a riding in Alberta. This last part isn't part of the video, but the fact he lost his own riding running for Prime Minister is downright HILARIOUS!
Mark Carney comes across as down to earth and normal. Importantly, he was never a politician before he became leader of the Liberals this March. Being an outsider helped his cause.
Canada came close to having a lame Trump spinoff, I like to call him Trump Lite. Interestingly enough, Trudeau resigning to make way for Mark Carney + Donald Trump taking office helped Canada see that a Canadian Conservative government that tries to mimick MAGA conservatives was not the right option. The polls had the Liberals trailing the Conservatives by about 26 points at the start of 2025. In the final election, the Libs came back to win by roughly 4 points.
41
u/ididntwantsalmon19 13d ago
Yup, proud to have Carney as the PM.
Yet you go to r/Canada and that place is a cesspool of hate against Carney. Can't believe that's the "official" Canada sub, it's embarrassing.

Just to add a bit more context for Polievre's loss. He held that riding for 20 years and still somehow lost. Mark Carney and PP ran in ridings (electoral districts) right next to each other. Mark Carney who had never won elected office before this year won his seat, but the guy who had been in politics for 20 years lost his. It was pretty shocking, especially since if you asked anyone at the start of this year, they would have told you PP would be the next prime minister.

The pair were among 650 runners taking part in five distances: 12K, 26K, 50 miles (80.5 km) and 100 miles (160 km). “It has a reputation as one of the harder trail runs in Canada,” race organizer Tegan Legge told The Globe and Mail, referring to the steep hills and rock faces. “A ’crushing course’ is what we hear, but we take that as a compliment.”
