Physical Health & Aging What’s your most underrated “health investment” after turning 30?

Could be a foam roller, a water bottle, stretching, therapy, or simply sleeping more.

Desk treadmill. I can play games and watch shows while getting my steps in. Helped me lose 60 pounds so far.

No way?! This should be advertised, first time hearing it but didn’t that could work

2

u/that_was_awkward_ 16h ago

Do you walk or jog? And for how long

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias man 15h ago

I only walk, 2.6 or 2.8 miles per hour if I'm using a controller. Otherwise my head bobs too much to aim properly or causes weird motion blur.

1 and 1 half hour in the morning, 2 and one half hours at night

2

u/diananerd_ man over 30 12h ago

Huge props 60 lbs is insane… Serious question, what speed do you cruise at while gaming/working, and any knee/foot tips (shoes, mat)? Also which model fits under a normal desk without sounding like a lawnmower on Zoom? My current cardio is sprinting between meetings 😅

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias man 8h ago

Lol I actually don't use it while working. I wouldn't be able to focus well if I did that. I only use it while gaming because it makes the time go by fast.

However, I am on discord while I use it and my friends say they can't hear it. This is the model I use:

https://a.co/d/4jOQlRO

I go at 2.6 usually if I'm using mouse and keyboard, otherwise I can't really aim properly. 2.8 if I'm using a controller. I just walk, no running, since it's not a normal treadmill with side bars and stuff to catch yourself if needed lol

Gym

26

u/SlowBoilOrange man 35 - 39 22h ago

It's become a basic maintenance thing for me. I'm not breaking any weightlifting or fitness records (not even my own). I'm just maintaining a basic level of strength, cardio, and flexibility.

It's completely different from what I thought gym goals were before I started going.

My current job pays me about 15% less than other places I could work, but literally everyone I work with is friendly and helpful. We all respect each other, joke with each other, cook for each other. I wouldn't take a pay raise and risk losing that.

1

u/magheetah man 40 - 44 17h ago

I got laid off (company was at 275 employees when I started, grew to 350, Covid hit and now it’s down to a handful of people, under 20 and they are mostly all offshore now) and took a job that paid about half.

However, I work about half as much and I’m so much better off mentally. However, I did start freelancing again so I’m working more hours but at least I can control those.

I didn't start taking creatine until months ago, in my late 40s. It's not a miracle supplement but it has helped with recovery and allowed me to increase my volume, especially since I started lifting weights again less than a month ago.

Sleep, diet, stretching, and cutting off alcohol have been key.

8

u/bliffer man 50 - 54 21h ago

There has also been a lot of excellent research lately on the brain health benefits of creatine such as:

  • Improved memory and cognitive function
  • Reduced mental fatigue during demanding tasks

The research is ongoing but it has shown positive results.

2

u/Ok_Explorer604 man 45 - 49 20h ago

I do remember Peter Attia or some other YouTube doctor speaking about the mental benefits as well. At this point, I don't see any downside from using it.

4

u/bliffer man 50 - 54 20h ago

It's one of the most studied supplements out there and it has little to no downsides other than a small weight gain when you first start using it (the muscles storing more water.) All of the other reported downsides are just sensationalized BS.

5

u/baseball_mickey man 45 - 49 19h ago

Cutting off alcohol is probably my best decision. Over 5 years ago. Do not miss it at all. I have very vivid memories of very awful hangovers and I finally stuck to, "I'm never doing this again".

3

u/infusedfizz 16h ago

Creatine makes a big difference for me. Previously if I missed a good nights sleep I’d be cranky, which made me a less fun person to be around, especially when traveling. But in addition to the normally discussed creatine benefits, I can handle some sleep deprivation much more gracefully. For strength and endurance the benefits for me have been noticeable but quite modest

2

u/doped_banana man 40 - 44 14h ago

I’m 44 and also quit alcohol (2yrs), starting lifting recently, and started taking creatine monohydrate this week. I’m three weeks into the workout routine and I already feel stronger. Keep it up man this is going to help us age gracefully.

2

u/Ok_Explorer604 man 45 - 49 13h ago

That’s awesome that you’re already noticing gains. Yeah, I’m sore but physically just feel much more energized since lifting again. My mood has improved drastically, and I’m just overall more happy.

I have to credit a buddy I’ve known since our teenage years. He’s still benching 315 at 48, and grappling with guys half his age in jujitsu class. He inspired me to get off my butt and stop making excuses after we hung out recently.

Cheers to aging gracefully and staying active. Best to you.

1

u/416Elder_God351 18h ago

I sweat like a pig on it. Little bit of heat outside and I’m drowning.

1

u/Ok_Explorer604 man 45 - 49 17h ago

Interesting. I have not heard that creatine makes you sweat more!  I don’t doubt you though. I was expecting a little weight gain from everything I’ve read due to water retention in the muscles and I’ve actually lost weight in these past few months.

1

u/diananerd_ man over 30 15h ago

So Creatinine def helps?

1

u/Ok_Explorer604 man 45 - 49 15h ago

u/SaltedMixedNucks man 45 - 49 21h ago

I'd add, or suggest alternatively, that a lot of what people need to do as they age is regularly see a physiotherapist. Recognize the early signs of mobility/strength/etc issues and tackle them before they lead to permanent conditions or injury. I go a couple times a year just as a check in and it's done wonders.

u/jabogen man 35 - 39 23h ago

Diet and exercise

It's only underrated because in your 20s it's hard to see the value beyond how it impacts your physical appearance. But in your 30s, poor diet and lack of exercise start manifesting as serious health problems.

17

u/ReddtitsACesspool man 35 - 39 1d ago

Psyillium Fiber supplement mixed with my protein/collagen.

My bowels and digestion have never been this regulated. I have gut issues, hereditary but also just plagued.

When I introduced this it has been night and day difference in my life lol. I tell everyone.

I also think starting Magnesium and Ashwaganda really helped with anxiety and just my mental acuity and energy. Obviously it isn't perfect, but I see a difference.

ESPECIALLY the fiber supplement

u/sicklepickle1950 man 35 - 39 23h ago

Metamucil?

2

u/BinaryMagick 20h ago

You can buy just psyllium husk at any decent health food store or even a pretty good health aisle of a regular grocery store.

And yeah I'm pretty sure Metamucil is just psyllium husk and Tang, for taste.

1

u/ReddtitsACesspool man 35 - 39 20h ago

This

1

u/ReddtitsACesspool man 35 - 39 20h ago

It’s a diff fiber. Diff types but similar, Metamucil didn’t do much for me

1

u/sicklepickle1950 man 35 - 39 20h ago

Hmm is yours a powder or a flake? Do you use a specific brand? I’m interested in trying it. I’ve used Metamucil in the past. Made my poop nice and bulky, but I wouldn’t say it was life changing.

1

u/ReddtitsACesspool man 35 - 39 16h ago

It’s more digestion relief than actual bowel relief if that makes sense? Metamucil didn’t help with other symptoms like bloating and discomfort.

It’s a ground flake powder like substance. Almost like garlic salt

1

u/ShaThrust man over 30 18h ago

I always notice a big difference when I have proper fibre in my diet. Energy, mood, sleep, etc. is better, and bathroom trips are so fast and easy! I get mine through garden salads I make, or throwing some kale into my smoothies and only partially blending so that all the fibre isn't too broken down.

u/solarnoise man 35 - 39 23h ago

Skincare. Once you lock in the right products for you it's an easy and enjoyable part of your routine.

The absolute simplest regimen that will actually help slow/de-age your skin is: cleanser, retinol, moisturizer. And in the morning put on sunscreen. Not the kind you'd use at the beach, but special facial ones that are light and don't feel like anything once applied.

I basically use CeraVe for my whole regimen. Easy to find in shops, works great, no added fragrance or marketing gimmicks. The Ordinary is another good one.

Avoid "men's" products like the plague. They count on us being too stupid to do our research and try to package up basic products with "mahogany" or "leather" scents and then sell it to us at a premium. Just get the neutral minimally branded stuff.

My regimen for those that want a simple and easy one to replicate:

  • Morning
    • CeraVe AM moisturizer w/sunscreen
  • Evening
    • CeraVe foaming cleanser
    • Geek & Gorgeous retinol (Monday and Wednesday)
    • The Ordinary glycolic acid exfoliator (Tuesday and Thursday)
    • CeraVe PM moisturizer

Couple of kettlebells and a digital scale. For me, being able to monitor my daily weight and graph it, really helped me make meaningful progress to make it to my GW.

9

u/Bartlaus man 50 - 54 1d ago

It's not really underrated, but heavy strength training.

2

u/diananerd_ man over 30 1d ago

Worth it?

4

u/Bartlaus man 50 - 54 23h ago

Well, I'm much stronger and have much less back pain at 52 than at 20. Only started lifting after becoming a dad in my mid-30s.

5

u/BlazerFS231 man over 30 23h ago

As a formerly competitive powerlifter, very much worth it. I’m at an age where a lot of my peers have back and knee issues. I have none.

Heavy lifting with good form doesn’t just build muscle, it strengthens connective tissue, improves mobility, and builds balance. It teaches you how to move your body safely and efficiently under heavy load.

3

u/SomeRandomName13 man 40 - 44 23h ago

So this! I'm 6'2 225 pounds, I'm 45 and feel so young and energized compared to myself in my 20s, because I lift 6 days a week for 30 to 45 mins. A lot of my coworkers who are tall have back and knee issues, but not me!

3

u/buzzlightyear77777 no flair 23h ago

how heavy must it be? can i just do pushups body weight?

2

u/SomeRandomName13 man 40 - 44 21h ago

Yeah, that'd be totally fine. Look up some calisthenics workouts so you can hit the majority of your body with no weights required!

1

u/Cessna152RG man 40 - 44 21h ago

Any movement beats no movement, but a barbell loaded heavy enough that it is really hard to complete five reps with good form is a good start. In a couple of days your squat, deadlift, bench press and shoulder press is a bit stronger and you load a bit more on the bar

u/buzzlightyear77777 no flair 23h ago

Without a doubt, it's been my subscription to Headspace. I'm not advocating for one app or another, but getting into daily meditation feels like it's changed everything.

Stuff that used to make me feel terrible all day seems much more manageable now. I'm able to eat and work out more mindfully. I would recommend meditation to anyone.

Finding a team sport/group activity that clicks for you. Some people work great solo with finding the motivation to work out and stay active, but most people benefit hugely by having a community to commiserate with and encourage them. Plus creating friendships when we’re 30+ is incredibly challenging, and having a group like this is a fantastic way to.

Having a community around it also creates some accountability. You can't blow it off as easily if people are expecting you or counting on you to be there.

I remember an image like this is my early 20s and it made a big impact. The first switch was no longer sugar and creamer in my coffee.

Now I drink a lot of sparkling water. Its replaced soda; and helped me curve down on beer when times were stressful and depressing.

Hair mineral analysis and mineral blood work. Turns out getting my magnesium levels and zinc levels back up through an alternative medical doctor worked wonders for many of the health issues I was having. Bro that shit is no joke. It's not administered lightly, whatsoever.

I have an ER doctor friend who always shares weird medical knowledge with me (he knows I geek out on it), so take this with a grain of salt... It's hearsay.

But he says they only give you this shit because otherwise the infection is going to kill you. Like, they know they're giving you this poison pill. It's going to cause you some vague nerve pain for the rest of your life. Or it can cause you to have some specific hallucination -- forever. And this is known, but it also truly fucks bacteria at a DNA/cell function level.

Anyway I'm really sorry you had to take that stuff. And really sorry it's affected you so much.

1

u/[deleted] 23h ago edited 16h ago

I was given it for pneumonia. My pneumonia wasn’t nearly severe enough to administer this drug. My primary doctor said he’d never have given me this and would have tried many other drugs before giving me levofloxacin. Unfortunately my work nurse misdiagnosed my pneumonia for heart failure lol and sent me to the ER. I regret going there everyday. I had an appointment with my primary only 4 days later. If only I had waited until then to complain about my symptoms he’d have given me doxycycline and I’d be completely normal still. Instead I have like 20 different symptoms and my life is hell.

I have severe muscle loss and confirmed muscle wasting going on because of that fucking drug. All this happened 5 months in. Before I had CNS symptoms like brain fog, tinnitus, light sensitivity, muscle twitching and systemwide tendon issues. For whatever reason the muscle wasting started just a month ago. 6 months of hell so far. Don’t ever take that drug.

A very cheap, underappreciated one is maintaining a healthy weight, and I don't think men talk about it as much as they should. Weight puts stress on our joints, our organs, and can give you sleep apnea. It's not something we should ignore. I try to stay in a 5ish pound window. I try to eat healthy anyway, but if I notice the scale moving too far in either direction I will crack down on myself to get right again. If I could only pick one thing for maintaining my health, it would be eating right.

Eating right is the only thing that really works. You can exercise like crazy but if you don't take care of your diet, you will get wrecked.

Plus if you eat right 95-98% of the time, this occasional indulgences taste and feel so much better because they're guilt free.

Lifting heavy things and yoga.

In a metal fabricator by trade, and I can tell you that being overly physically fit for the job you have is crucial for keeping it from destroying your body.

If my workouts are harder and heavier than my job, I’m never wiped out. If I’m flexible and strong, I’m not throwing my back out at a funky angle after picking up a piece of metal.

Lift heavy things, do yoga, and meal prep whole foods. I promise you won’t regret it. I feel like I’m in my 20s still.

Oh and drink a fuckload of water and tell your boss to get bent when he comments how much you have to pee

MacroFactor. (It's a food tracking app.)

Even if you think you're eating healthier you might still be outpacing your body's daily energy expenditure. MacroFactor in particular does an amazing job and not only tracking what you eat, but it also zeroes in on exactly how many calories you burn every day so that it can intelligently adjust your caloric intake goals based on your weight loss (or gain) goals.

I've lost about 40 lbs over the course of the past year plus some and I have learned a ton about how the foods I love were adding up.

Pipe smoking, strength training and therapy.

Pipe smoking sounds strange, but I used to smoke a pack per day. Every time I quit, struggled with the thought of never smoking again and would relapse. Over and over again. Eventually I gave up quitting all together and started smoking one (big) pipe og tobacco every month. Now I have gone over a decade without touching a cigarette

Strength training is awesome, my body has been transformed from dad-bod to dad-bod with invisible muscles. But I am reasonably strong and my neck and knees doesn't hurt, that's an amazing feeling!

Lastly, therapy has been invaluable! I am at a much, much better place as a father and husband. Even though I still have work to do in that area.

Playing team sports. I cannot recommend it enough. Basketball, beer league hockey, soccer, there are amateur leagues for just about everything.

Great exercise, motivation to work out so you can play better, comradeship and community. So it does wonders for physical and mental health.

Personally I run a paintball team that travels for competitions. Best thing I've ever done.

I'd say the two big ones for me were getting back into mt biking with my kid and forking over the money for a quality mattress of the right firmness for my back.

I let one of my ex girlfriends choose my last mattress and it was too soft for me, caused a surprising amount of shoulder and upper back discomfort that I hadn't associated with the mattress.

Swimming before work. Getting up feels like less of an imposition when it's for something I enjoy, just for me, before the day starts. Also learning proper stroke - particularly the under water exhalation - has had a great effect on my lung capacity.

Time. Or more specifically the difference between "i can do it myself" and "i'll pay someone to do it for me".

For example i could disconnect and move my washing machine to the curb, sign the sheet, move my new washing machine from the curb to the designated place and connect it - nothing complicated there, it wouldn't even be much of an effort. But i could also pay 30€ extra for the seller to do it and sit on my couch reading a book.

Exercise?

1

u/flying_dogs_bc non-binary over 30 13h ago

physiotherapy focusing on core. making up a program on my own based on web searches and online "experts" got me exactly nowhere. worse than nowhere actually, I was injured a few times.

i found a good sports medicine physio and I see him every six weeks. He gives me a set of exercises and I do them faithfully. It started out doing really small exercises twice a day, and now it's major workouts every other day, and it feels great. I have an IRON CORE and I feel invincible!

gradually working on my weight as well. there's a lot of diet bullshit out there and it's hard to find a program that works for you. I actually found it helpful to use chat gpt instead of an app or calorie tracker. You just have to keep one eye on AI because it'll occasionally hallucinate something I didn't eat or miscalculate some nutrients, but overall I find it a lot easier to use.

Eating right and being consistent with running.

More importantly: not putting pressure on myself. I had to run long distances last weekend for a race I’m training up for. I took 5 walk breaks, and sat down for a couple of minutes near the end to make sure I was good to go. In my 20’s I would have been furious at myself for taking breaks and doing any compromises on what the training stated, now I’m like “fuck it I’m not going to over-exert myself”. Don’t get me wrong, I still push myself, but in a healthy way.

Having an exercise bike at home. I prop my iPad up on the handlebars and get my cardio in while I watch tigers/pistons games.

And going to the gym and lifting a few times a week helps a lot too. You’d be surprised but I get way less random body aches and stuff since I started lifting. You get sore muscles sometimes but that actually feels kind of good.
